and yet everyone forgets that Ryan died to Toadman, FUCKING TOADMAN. Storm Eagle can be challenging without leg upgrade, Toadman just jumps left and right and if you time your shots right, he just stands there and do a wiggle the entire battle...
Omega Coolster that was one of the things that always bugged me, whenever Ryan would try to use storm eagle against Johnny. Regardless of how much health Ryan had, he still died to the easiest boss in all of megaman. He has no right to criticize anyone with how bad they play in a game
The original X game was also my introduction to the entire Mega Man franchise, and the MMX series as a whole is one of my all-time favorites by far. Can't wait to see Johnny tackle it all

For me it was Megaman 8 but I liked the 32 bit so much that it dragged me to the X series and the first I played was 4 and holy shit was it amazing, and that damn music is the reason I always started a new game with X and just chilled in Sky Lagoon

In fact as a kid I didn't know at first that X was a "sequel series" to a franchise that started on the NES (the SNES was my first system growing up, and while I played my cousin's NES a lot back then he oddly never had any of the Mega Man games), so when I saw Mega Man 7 at my local rental store for the first time my reaction was "wow I didn't know Mega Man X had seven games!" and when I played it I was like "Wait why does Mega Man look like that? And where's Zero?" It was after I started going through that same cousin's collection of Nintendo Power magazines that I realized Mega Man has a whole had been around longer than I knew, and X was technically a different series.
Lil Boulder Same here! It was the first game that introduced to me the concept of being able to choose the order of stages and bosses instead of a linear playthrough like every other game I had played during my earlier years. It was such an alien concept to me that it blew my mind away.

Oh, one more thing about X3 that may be interesting to add in the review. There is a ROM hack X3 made by this guy named Justin3009 called the Zero Project that lets you play as Zero for the entire game. Not just letting Zero overcome his phobia of doors, but make him a fully playable character with his own upgrades, his own dialogue, everything. It's essentially to X3 what Sonic 3 Complete was to Sonic. It apparently also changes other things, like making X's buster upgrade actually useful! Might be worth spreading the word; I think this could help make an otherwise mediocre entry in the series something worthwhile.

9:00 I would like to see someone who never have played Mega Man before tackle Armored Amadillo, Lanch Octopus, Spark Mandrill or Sting Chamelion first.
Also, being a main abillity of X, why is the dash locked behind a Light Capsule? X can dash at default in every other X-game.
That was because they didn't want to implement too much new mechanics right off the bat and made X more similar to classic Mega Man so instead of having it naturally like a wall climb, they made it a mandatory power-up, so that people will get used to controls by the time they get it.
I can answer that for you. I couldn't beat Armored Armadillo or Sting Chameleon, and I couldn't even get to Launch Octopus or Spark Mandrill. Then I tried Storm Eagle and I managed to beat him.
I think I tried all of them, got pissed, checked a guide and went to chill penguin

He changed it after he found out that Capcom developed X6 behind his back (At which point, he couldn't pull the plug on it without it putting a hole in Capcom's wallets)

I mean, the ending of X6 ties in well enough to Zero that Inafune wouldn't HAVE to change much.
Here's a little info about Mega Man X3 for your eventually review that I think will shed light on why it's not your favorite X game. X3 wasn't actually developed by Capcom, believe it or not. At the time, they were busy porting their development systems from 16-bit to 32-bit, and so they didn't have much time to develop a third Mega Man X for the SNES. Although that didn't stop them from making Mega Man & Bass for the SNES, but I digress. Instead, X3 was outsourced to Minakuchi Engineering. If the name sounds familiar to you, they're the folks who developed the Game Boy Mega Man titles. The only things Capcom handled themselves were the character designs and, get this, the story. Everything else, from the music, to the level design, to the boss AIs, to the weapons and upgrades, to Zero being a worthless addition, were all Minakuchi, and it shows. Fittingly, X3 would be the very last Mega Man game they would ever develop.
Here's a little bit of trivia about X1. Did you know the Dash upgrade was actually supposed to be an ability you had from the start? However, to keep things simple and familiar, they decided to make it an upgrade, and the first one you're supposed to acquire, to better ease players in the mechanic. That's why from X2 onward, X has the dash from the beginning.
And now for a story about myself and X1. I was first introduced to X1, among many other games, through the emulation scene. One day, a friend of mine from over 10 years ago tried burning an emulator and a couple of games on a CD-Rom. But the end result was so buggy that it didn't save progress, so I had to finish games like Super Mario RPG and Yoshi's Island in one sitting. Which I did. One of those games was X1, and it was the buggiest one by far. Armor upgrades wouldn't save, which made sections like Sigma's fortress... interesting to say the least. I also would be booted back to the intro stage after beating a boss more often than not, keeping all the weapons I acquired so far with me. Needless to say, it made for a pretty unique experience. Looking back, it was rather entertaining at the time to blow through the intro stage with weapons you weren't supposed to have yet, but I'd honestly take a stable version of the game over it any day.

Wow, I knew Capcom had some outsourcing for X3, but I didn't know they virtually had no control over the gameplay! A lot of things in X3 felt off to me when comparing it to its prequels, and now it actually makes sense. The level design isn't the greatest, most bosses are laughably limited in animation and movesets, and the music is just overall average for both versions (along with an argument that comes up WAY to often). Although with the "Which Soundtrack is better" argument, I myself have quite the bombshell of an opinion to throw into ring.

Mega Man X is one of my favorite video game series of all time. Much like you, Mega Man X was my very first Mega Man game period, so I've felt very spoiled when playing classic Mega Man after X since X had the superior mobility and combat capabilities. This is going to be quite the marathon indeed. Looking forward to the rest of the marathon, Johnny. I have a feeling I'll be re-watching this entire marathon multiple times in the future. XD
Zero Knight Mega Man X, when I was a kid really defined what a video game was. Up to that point I think Mario and Aladdin, and Yoshi Island were the only games we had for the SNES. I remember when I got this for my birthday, it was a challenge, but a FUN one! It seemed like Mega Man had everything you could ask for as a kid. What a special entry into the MM series. 🤖

I completely forgot that flame mammoth's stage had actual lava and fire. Doing chill Penguin first is so engraved into my memory that now i just can't do any stage first. Forget maverick weaknesses, going aroung without the dash???? Not since the first time i played the game fifteen years ago

I guess you could always go get the dash and then die to play Flame Mammoth with the lava and fire.
Or play the PSP version, where they moved the dash to Flame Mammoth's stage. Boy did that screw with me when I played that for the first time and Chill Penguin's stage had no dash.

I remember going through Armored Armadillo, Launch Octopus & Flame Mammoth first before going through Chill Penguin and I manage to beat them all without the dash and I got all the upgrades and capsules; with the exception of Flame Mammoth's stage where after beating Chill Penguin, I cool down the lava and it was the only time I've backtrack to get all the items & capsules in that one stage ( not counting the Hadoken one in Armored Armadillo stage ). It was difficult without the dash. But not entirely impossible if u know what to do and one of the most satisfying moments I've ever done.

I am not the only one who noticed original MegaMan to grow more and more on himself during the series also having some sort of free will, just like a 10 years old boy.
As for Auto though, he is still alive and lives in an underwater apartment of sorts that can be seen in the PS1/Saturn/PC Version of X3.
MegaMan X itself is possibly one of the best games in the entire series, I still play it every once in a while because it is just so good!

Uh... In what world do you live in, Johnny? Sigma alone probably took me longer than that my first time through.
Josh Teixeira it took me almost 15 years to beat Megaman X this first time. I mean there were several year gaps, but you get it. I could not beat it. Getting back into it, after dying so many times, and understanding the patterns, I think an hour and a half is a reasonable time.
For me, I’ve played through it dozens of time and I have muscle memory now

I wouldn’t say that’s too much of a stretch. Each stage is at most 5 minutes long (without dying mind you) and the Sigma stages take about a half an hour (45 minutes at most) it really depends on how easy you find it.
Collin Drey The rest of the game is fine, but some of the later stages can be tough. Sigma on the other hand, is just brutal.
Bottom line is if it's somebody's first time through the game, it will take way longer than an hour and a half.
I love hearing Johnny gushing about the soundtrack. I feel the exact same way, it is so damn good. The intro stage theme always gets me pumped.
So excited you're finally doing the X series. Your marathon of the classic series is what made me subscribe to you so I'm excited to see what your thoughts on this series are, controversial or otherwise.

3:40 If you play the PSX port of Mega Man X3 & are paying attention to the Electro Namazuros (Volt Catfish) Stage Start Cutscene, you'd see there was a brief cameo of Auto as Electro Namazuros swims by in a current.

One of my all time favs, it took me a while to finally find everything and complete the game but it was worth it.
Don't forget that Maverick Hunter X also re-arranges where the Armor Capsules are (no more free Dash Legs), re-arranges the Sigma Fortress stages to the point that Vile is fought in the third stage instead of the first like the original (though the new Vile Ride Armor fights suck with how you have to beat him and then he grabs you anyway), and actually made Zero's Buster Parts when he dies unique from the normal Capsule Buster Parts so that it encourages you to go through almost the whole goddamn fortress without charging special weapons or a third buster charge (and coincidentally makes it impossible to get the Hadouken until just before the final boss if you do so).

Edit: Make sure you play the mod of Megaman X3 for Zero as well.

6:10 is just glorious. This always got me feeling dread but hyped at the same time. The OST and sound design in this game is next level , especially compared to the sequels.

I can't for the life of me beat any of them without using restore points (and even then my successes are few and far between), but still, I like 'em.

12:00 actually you have to lose to vile AGAIN and can only beat him after Zero saves your ass AGAIN to destroy the ride armor. That's my biggest problem with the game as Rohan Mythril put it "You didn't win because X got stronger, you won because Vile got weaker"

That's a main complaint I had about Vile in X1. You fight him in the intro with it being a forced loss (with Maverick Hunter X turning it into a proper boss), setting up that X eventually becomes strong enough to kick Vile's ass, even with the Ride Armor. But nope. Even with EVERY UPGRADE IN THE GAME, his ride armor still kicks your ass and Zero has to bail him out again, sacrificing himself just so that Vile can't use that cheap ass armor anymore (Which leaves less of an impact of you replay X1 after playing any of the later X games, like Leomon's death in Digimon).

I actually played X2-X8 for my backlog clearing this year, and so I'm super excited to see your opinions on these games.
I went back through X1 as well, just to see how it stood up after playing through the others and I think it's really good!
Good graphics, good music, nice level design and some memorable mavericks. I noticed this game was way faster paced then pretty much every other game, which made it very fun to go back to. I like X4 slightly more, but this is still my second-favorite X game. I'll probably drop my opinion on each game with each review, and again, looking forward to the rest of the marathon!
