How do you find artists to draw your title cards?
love how confident johnny looks on the new title card & interesting we may get a small saga of johnny getting tails doll for good after that tease.
had lowered expectations for superstars when i was indifferent to origins & was more hyped for wonder(considering it was mario being fun/the year of it having personality again especially giving peach/daisy love.:3) but may consider getting superstars after a huge price drop/patch to shorten the bosses jank as it looks pretty fun with the levels, fang returning(do hope the next game has him form the hooligans as he works better being with them.).
trip(she looks so adorable/wouldn't mind seeing her in modern along with mighty and ray as possible dlc from what tailstube implied.) and actually using the emeralds(with the direction frontiers is going that would be cool seeing the emeralds power used in the 3d games.) that i'm interested from this review like how most of your reviews introduced me to so many series john.(personally after superstars/if mania 2 is revived would really love to see the advance formula come back seeing the other characters like the chaotix, team dark,sticks,cream/gemerl,the babylon rogues, silver or blaze again in action alongside a advance collection/sonic pocket adventure with it.)
* laughs in Bluetooth headphones*
Thanks for the heads up about the boss fight BS, Johnny. 😊
Oh, head up, Johnny. You review Resident Evil 4 remake again, and they are adding the DLC for Separate Ways and have the Red9 in Separate Ways DLC going to cost 26,000 ptsa 14,000 ptsa for gun and ptsa 12,000 stock separately. Oh, you should sense the trailer for Resident Evil remake again this time. They update the camera feature having fix cameras angles or over the shoulder if you don't like the fix cameras angles.
Johnny reviewing a sonic game is like Christmas
Seriously
Personally I liked the boss fights, especially Fang, Metal Amy and Samurai Eggman, but I was also introduced into Sonic by Freedom Planet so I’m much more used to lengthy bosses in speedy platformers.
Or Halloween if it's a bad Sonic game
But it's november
Fr fr. Glad to know this man is still doing this even now and sgb is still my channel jam as well
Nack: “Why can’t I beat you?!”
Sonic: “Because… *_We’re Sonic Superstars.”_*
*Sad and pathetic trombones*
@@Mekboy_ComputerMonster I think the boss battles were made for Co-op, but Co-op In regular levels is questionable?
@@orangeslash1667It doesn’t matter if you’re playing in single or multiplayer, all boss fights take forever! The primary reason is because they have long periods where you *cannot* damage them. Whether it’s their obnoxiously long I-frames, or them flying out of reach (especially when going to the background), most bosses can take well over a minute to beat.
@@JJ_R If thats the case, then maybe the single multiplayer of the Mania is all you need??? Cause Co-op in a Sonic game so far is unnecessary.
@@orangeslash1667 If Main Game multiplayer allowed for split-screen (or proper online gameplay with each player having their own screen), this wouldn’t be an issue.

Every time I see Johnny review a new Sonic game I get hit with a wave of nostalgia. Because I’m pretty sure his Sonic reviews were some of the first videos I ever watched on CZcams growing up. Lol
For me its the super mario 64 one, that intro will always be engraved in my memory.
@@trapythetmanhimself I think the first ever was Sonic 06 for me. I remember back when I used to “role play Sonic characters on Facebook” (cringe asf I know) some guy recommended me that video after an 06 discussion. Back then I was so little and naive. I argued that every Sonic game was good. But Johnny opened my eyes to criticism and also showed me that more awesome franchises other than Sonic existed. Yeah after a 2 years hiatus state from the cvoid 19 incident happened.
Looking forward to the rest of the playthrough, that debit episode was hilarious!
Regarding where the final boss comes from, according to Ian Flynn, there was a ton of lore that was planned out, but never included in the game (which surprised him). I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re saving that for something akin to Mania Adventures.
If there's one thing Sega is good at other than video games sometimes, it's putting a wrench in game development. Sonic especially.......
if it ain't physically in the game, it doesn't count
Yeah I felt bad for the purple dragon. What did he do to deserve being a boss? He seems like a cool guy that doesn't afraid of anything
i think SEGA are a little too obsessed with supplementary content lately
because it worked so well for Final Fantasy XV, everyone liked that (sarcasm), and everyone wants to do homework for the media they like
Sega being Sega, as always
Tails Doll and Slicers in one Sonic game. Truly John's wet dream.
Lot of old school Johnny lore in this one for long time fans. Love to see it
TAILS DOLL RETURNS

I like to think that bit with the Nintendo Direct reveal of Shadow kicking Silver in the head came to Johnny in a dream, and he woke up in a cold sweat at 4am just to bring it to fruition
Your rant on Trip's final boss was the best part of the video for me. That boss without a doubt is the worst boss in the whole franchise.
Unfortunately it's thanks to glitches I think Sega and Sonic team should patch the game for all the glitches they have.
That boss alone made me knock this game down at least 2 points
@@rouge939i think you guys are overreacting. It really wasnt that bad. Considering it is A CLASSIC SONIC GAME which means just 2d, it was a pretty good super sonic final boss fight.
@@Jason-..-nah, fuck all 3 of the final bosses. Eggman's is tedious and boring, Fang's is the biggest horse shit I've played in a Classic Sonic game, and the final final FINAL boss is prayer to RN-Jesus. Love Sonic, fuck these bosses.
@@Jason-..- They were talking about the Trip Final Boss.
Personally though, I didn't feel the bosses were nearly as bad as everyone said. Most of them I thought were fine. I didn't have any real trouble until some of the bosses on Trip's Story or the final few of both. (I honestly had more trouble with the Last Story than anything else in the entire game.)
I hope folks enjoy the new intro tune, short as it is! Johnny paid for this commission by buying me Sonic Superstars on Steam. I wish I was kidding about that, but I'm not. 😅
Damn, was it worth it??
Considering how long Johnny's been making videos on this blue menace, he has every right to be considered a "Sonic Superstar" himself.
The worst part for me John is that I played both Freedom Planet games & Mania before this to get me excited & prepped. All 3 of those games are more fairly priced & consistent. OST for all 3 are fantastic too whereas Superstars jumps all over the place in quality. Most of the levels are fun in Superstars but the bosses pissed me off too much as did Trip's story.
I blame Arzest. Sega being focused on clout nowadays (Explains why Yong was picked for the English voice of Kazuma Kiryu) doesn't help either.
@@Code7Unltd Yong has been voicing in stuff for a while ever since playing Pucci in JoJo Stone Ocean's adaptation. He's also voiced a character in Lost Judgment's DLC. I don't really get the vibe it has to do with clout. Maybe you think he's misscast, but that's a different sort of problem.
@Code7Unltd Regardless of Arzest's track record I think it's nice that Iizuka got them to have a new Sonic game made with involvement from Sonic's original character designer.
@@Code7Unltd I feel like Sega is more to blame than anyone else for constantly destroying every IP they own by rushing shit every single dev cycle.
@@LeopoldLitchensteinpeople cite the Yoshi games to shit on Arzest (they were mainly just art/support on Balan) not realizing that back in their Artoon days they made stuff like Blinx, Last Story, Blue Dragon, etc. so they can be a more than competent dev... but people love to blame everything other than Sega's management for some reason, despite being legendarily terrible.
I was totally surprised to see this game listed for $60. I want to support these types of games but feel like they got to meet in in the middle somewhere 😂
A game like this is worth $60 if it doesn't feel like a budget title. Games like Mario Wonder and DKC Tropical Freeze are 2D games that feel like full budget releases.
@@GameFreak164X I loved shorter and creative games systems like the ds and gameboy games would come out with. Also I feel the 30-40$ price tag were worth the price for those game. I don’t want games like that to go away but I want to pay an appropriate price for them.
It’s not worth 60 dollars due to the Length and Glitches.
@@jonahabenhaim1223 I don’t need every game to be 80+ hours either. The overall quality just has to be in proportion with the price.
@@bbyjohn11 May I recommend a game like Sekiro or the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series then?
4:09 I heavily agree with that statement. Having the camera pan towards whatever direction Sonic is running in like in Sonic CD would seriously help with reacting to oncoming hazards, and I really think that should've be a permanent mainstay for every 2D Sonic game. It would also be great if players had the option to zoom the camera out in real time however they see fit for the sake of having a better view ahead. That way, players could choose how they want the camera to be zoomed out without it being forced onto players who don't like that change.

i totally relate to this.
I hear ya. I first discovered johnny from that 19th anniversary sonic interview he made in 2010 when I was 15 and that lead me to look at his reviews and still follow him to this day and brainscratch.
Hey mate, heard you've been suffering some burnout - just wanna say, take all the time you need. Health comes first. And I super appreciate all the videos you've made (all the ones I've seen, anyway) thus far. Your output rate has actually been super wild lately, to the point where I was wondering how you were accomplishing it - burning the candle at both ends I guess. Definitely take it easy man, recover a bit - I don't think your audience is going anywhere. I know I'm not. Youve well and truly paid your dues to be able to take a break, and have people embrace your return with open arms whenever that may be. Also, saw a comment here that you had let us know through twitter, certainly didn't expect a video on the matter and I dont use twitter, but it's good to know what's going on for you man. Take it easy til whenever you're ready man. All the best. ✨️
Okay I was wondering what was going on.
When johnny changes the thumbnail art i consider it a new era. I still cant belive its been 12 years since he started the VS series. Much love
I 100% agree with your thoughts on the boss fights. It's the only reason that I couldn't bring myself to finish the game. It's such a shame because everything else was really fun. I didn't play co op, so I can't speak for it but single player was really fun until you get to those infernal bosses.
Now imagine how scarred Johnny would be if there was a boss as difficult as Fang's
Only it was a slicer
If there were checkpoints during boss fights and no one hit kills, the boss fights would be amazing.
And much less time between opportunities to damage them
Even the classic series had some bosses with one-hit kills. In my opinion, it is just a matter of learning the game.
16:48 Gotta love how Johnny manages to keep alive bits of his that have been around since the channel’s earliest days
Fun fact: there's a glitch where when you are carrying Trip, if you cross the checkpoint right before picking her up and jump into the portal, Amy will just rotate in the air with Trip since they can't roll into a ball
7 years ago I was getting ready to move away for a new job in a new city, and was stressing tf out. However, at the same time I remember watching Johnny’s Sonic videos as they were dropping around thanksgiving. They provided a very genuine comfort at a very scary and unstable time, which is why I rewatch them every year around this time. Was not disappointed by this. Also glad you brought up how the camera is too close to Sonic in gameplay, something a lot of other reviewers don't bring up.
Same. I feel like the field of view given to you is barely more than the Advance games. Which shouldn't be a thing for an HD game.
@@seacliff217it’s frustrating because the remasters of the classic games & Mania are in widescreen, resolving the issue the mega drive games had of not having enough time to react to some obstacles. Wtf happened here?

LOVE the new thumbnail art, Johnny 🤩
As for Sonic Superstars, I would give the game a 7.5 out of 10. I love the level design, and all the playable characters are absolute fun, but these I've got to be some of the worst boss battles in the series; they take way too long with their attack patterns, and absolutely kill the pacing of the game.
Also, I know we haven't seen Fang the sniper in 30 years but after that final boss battle I hope we don't see him for another 90

I love this! The new thumbnail art that takes the new artwork for each game from the previous thumbnails, the new intro, and the fact that it's a Sonic game is fantastic. This was a great review. It was entertaining, made me laugh, and in general, your Sonic videos are usually your best work. I'm excited for the future videos to come, including another revisit to the blue blur's red plumber rival/friend. Awesome work, John!
7/10 isn't a bad score, let them complain. I hope the team takes the game an improves on it rather than chuck the whole thing in the damn dumpster for the next one.
Seeing the tails doll again and whatever the tease was for after was like my multiverse of madness. It's already been said a lot in the comments but Johnny reviewing Sonic really is nostalgic. Him and Clement were two of the first youtubers I ever followed. Glad you're still going strong. ❤️

As Johnny mentioned in his Sonic Frontiers video in regards to characters mentioning past events, I feel respected when he does moments like that because he is basically acknowledging the fact that some of us have been watching his content for so long.
A new Johnny vs. thumbnail always feels like a brand new season of my favourite show lol

I don't care how pretty it is, I am not paying 60 dollars for a side-scrolling Sonic game. 20? Sure. 30? That's REALLY pushing it.
But 60? I'm expected to pay the same amount that I would for Sonic Frontiers on launch, a game which had massive open zones to run around in, fully voiced cutscenes and kickass music, and a detailed story? No, not gonna happen.

The game isn’t bad… but just buy Mario Wonder. That game definitely earns its price tag.
Sonic Superstars is an alright game (horrible boss fights aside), but the fact that they charged 40 more dollars than Sonic Mania at launch is embarrassing. This is a budget title through and through.

23:45 That chaos control callback was 10/10
This is a game that whenever I go back to, it will be exclusively for the Time Attack mode. The levels in this game are mostly a blast to play through, but the bosses really do kill the experience a bit. Hopefully they address them with a patch eventually but enough time has passed since release that I’m not sure this game is getting touched again. Maybe they have plans for sequels already.
The reason the bosses are designed like that is because of the multiplayer. Also, one cool fact that I heard about the water power that is never mentioned is its ability to save you from getting crushed.

Yep. Hard agree with all this. I feel like the bosses would be better if the invulnerability for the bosses also acted like the classics - half a second long, rather than the nightmare that is this game and you only being able to get one hit in every 30 seconds. Aside from that though, I really genuinely did like this game. $60 is quite steep for it, and I would have thought it would have been like $40 or so. Ah well.

Oh baby, I was waiting for this one! I'm thankful for Johnny and his reviews, happy Thanksgiving y'all! :^)
It’s honestly wild that Sega actually charged $60 for this game when they released Like a Dragon Gaiden a few weeks later, and that game is has a lower price tag ($50), way more content, and is an absolute banger.
Superstars would’ve been an easy recommend at $30 or $40 but for $60? Naw not even close.
I defintely would've picked it up if it was closer to half the price that they were selling it for.

Watching you review a new classic Sonic game makes me feel like a kid again. Literally one of the very first youtubers I consistently followed way back when 😭😭😭
Having my exact thoughts on this game spewed back to me (complete with the Wonder playthrough directly after) is surreal.
Rather that composing with the mindset of "This is a genesis game", compose with the mindset of making a song and then porting it down to the Genesis. I think that mindset would work a lot better and why the other composers succeeded.
Wasn't that the mindset of the vast majority of composers during the 3rd and 4th generation of consoles?
@@esmooth919 Yeah and it worked, which makes the guy's approach confusing compared to the other composers. It's like he resents making music for games of this style.
Trip is good addition to the Sonic roster, but I hope she doesn't suffer the curse of the orange Sonic character, as in being forgotten or sidelined like it happened with Tikal, Cream and Sticks, but if the sudden return of the small rabbit on the upcoming Sonic Dream Team is anything to tell, maybe she'll make more appareances.
Don't forget Marine the Racoon, from Sonic Rush Adventure.
Get this, the true final boss is a super specific reference to the Japanese instruction manual of Sonic 3 and Knuckles where Knux talks about possibly seeing some purple dragon after the game's end.
I’ll be honest. When I first saw the teasers for this game I’m like “SONIC 4 REVAMP?!” But no it’s basically taking the best of Mania, Origins Plus, Sonic 4, and New Super Mario and throwing it all together to make one solid, yet problematic, Sonic game. I can honestly tell they are wanting to recapture the magic of the 2D originals, and sometimes they have little sparks that refine or even expand what was once done in past. But I think Mania hit the nail on the head of what is possible, what needed improvements, and the dedicated fans willing to make it work.
Personally, I feel like if this was something 16-bit added as a new game to Origins Plus (like Lost Levels in Mario Allstars) I think it would work as an expansion to the classics and 8 bit games all in one bubble.
But if they REALLY wanna bring back the classics, or revive some 90s nostalgia, wait till you hear my pitch for Sonic Xtreme version 12795028363802730.2
Bro, I don’t think I’ve ever agreed with one of Johnny’s review more in my decade of watching him. This review is *spot on* with what I think of it. Thanks as always, Johnny!
I haven't gotten super far into the game yet but I feel like even just nerfing the bosses' HP would be a noticeable improvement on that front. It's not the only change that needs to be made, but it feels like they took steps to prevent you from getting more than one hit per opening, but based the HP values on those in Sonic games where you CAN, without really considering how that negatively impacts the length of boss fights.
This review helped me realize I also missed Frozen Base act 1
I'm glad someone else brought up how weird the orbs in Press Garden feel now.
Big agree with everything said here. The game really nails certain parts and provides an amazing classic Sonic experience... but those BOSS FIGHTS, man. They hang out in the background where you can't hit them for WAY too long, not to mention the redundant music. There's also no checkpoints on multi phase fights when there really should be (looking at you Fang/Eggman final bosses on the normal campaigns).
Dramatically lowered my enjoyment of this otherwise interesting new take on 2d Sonic. I know Mania re-used a lot of content, but gameplay wise it just felt a lot better to play, imo.
Agreed
Just got the platinum trophy for this game on PlayStation. Commence the Johnny Goodness!
Okay!
I already love the new intro!!!
Automatically my favorite intro!!!
I see you building that Labrynth deck there! You're gonna love that deck.
On the topic of SuperStars' boss fights, I like the idea of wanting to make them more standout compared to previous Classic games, since most of the bosses in those games are pushovers that are over with faster than they appear. I don't think most of SuperStars' bosses are that bad, but they do definitely nosedive towards the end of the game. Since the bosses were balanced around multiplayer, if the next 2D Sonic game has multiplayer, I think it would be fine if they had dedicated single player and multiplayer modes, and in single player, they speed up the boss fights by 50% or something and make their waiting periods significantly shorter. Just spitballin' some ideas here. They're the one thing keeping Sonic SuperStars from being an excellent game, though I still enjoyed my time with the game.
Personally I liked the Late Game Bosses but I also got into Sonic through Freedom Planet and the Late Game Bosses KICK you ass in those games so I was a lot more prepared for them
The game looks like a mobile game, so no.
@@ramonandrajo6348do you enjoy life?
@@enternamehere3759 Of course I do. :)
19:51 That happened to me as well! I don’t know why the game asks you to select acts in the first place at that point!
You know Johnny is serious when brings a new art into the Review’s thumbnail
Hey buddy watching you since 2017 , i am an indian and when i was depressed your castlevania videos really got me through.
If you read this just know, i always come back to your Ghost and Goblins video time to time, one of my all time favorite😂. Thanks man and keep smiling.
I agree so much with what you said on the boss fights. Just awful.
Even with free hits with the emerald power ups I still think this is the worst line up of bosses in the entire series and I've played almost every single Sonic platformer.
The superstars review I’ve been waiting for.
Yes! Johnny just reviewed Sonic Superstars! Let's go! Also 18:33 I knew you were going to comment on the Slicer in Golden Capital. That robot will forever be the bane of your existence. XD
Did 2024 claim johnny too? I can't tell.
