  • We get our first taste of the new Kreator album, and this is absolute top shelf Trash Metal right here! Pretty sure I slipped a disc in my neck on this one, and had to censor out more swear words in this video than anything else I've ever done because I was so excited. In this video we discuss the difference between the "Big Four" in the US and Germany, talk about how the band started, and I do my best to break down the band's gear between headbanging...

      I fully second this suggestion! I also wonder what bands those who say that they are not typically into Thrash, but did like this song might have listened to so far. There are IMO also a lot of hidden gems from the eighties which even many old school Thrash Metal fans might not be familiar with, e.g. albums like "A Tribute to Insanity" by Hexenhaus, "Suffering Hour" by Anacrusis, "Recognize No Authority" by Détente, "Act of God" by Znowhite, "Behind the Realms of Madness" and "Within the Prophecy" by Sacrilege (the female-fronted band from the UK) or "Control and Resistance" by Watchtower (probably the most technical Thrash Metal band).

    • @myfaceismyshield5963
      @myfaceismyshield5963 Před rokem +1

      The funny thing is if you make Thrash too melodic, it literally just turns into Power Metal. So honestly there are certain songs from Kreator that could be called Power Metal, if Kreator weren't known as a Thrash band. Hail To The Hordes for example is literally a Power Metal song but because it's a Kreator song, a lot of people just call it Thrash.
      Blind Guardian's first album, Battalions of Fear for another example was pretty much just Thrash with some unusually melodic parts in a couple songs before they took a more melodic approach on later records. Nobody calls it Thrash anymore because people now know Blind Guardian as a power metal group, but if you forget about their newer music and close your eyes, it kinda sounds like early Heathen or Flotsam & Jetsam.
      Edit: (and yes, Blind Guardian also has some newer songs like Blood Of The Elves that are pretty much modern Thrash with a couple melodic bits, just like the first record)

    Kreator is my all-time favourite band, so it was nice to see this reaction. Thank you for that.
    At he 80-90's Kreator made some absolutely milestone albums of thrash metal. But after Coma Of Souls (1990) they started to experimenting very different kind of stuff which i didn't like. But the Violent Revolution (2000) was again more traditional thrash metal. After that they have allways been developing themselves. New album has allways sounded little bit like the previous one, but every time they have added some nice new twists. That is the one thing i love in Kreator. Every album has allways sounded fresh, not just repeating same ideas and cliches time after time. If there is someone who doesn't know Kreator, but loves that good old violent headbanging, then this is the band for you :-D

During the show at Berlin I got so carried away by the band's energy that I was banging my fist at the barrier that was separating the first row from the stage until I broke my hand. It’s a weird thrash/hardcore album that went over many people’s head. They were trying on some new sounds, and I love how totally, and utterly raw it is! That era was hard on lost thrash bands, but I have to admit, there is no bad Kreator album. Endorama, and Outcast are weird albums for them, but they still kick a lot of ass.

    This was so cool to hear on release. Kreator and, I think, Destruction were the two German thrash bands that really caught on with my and my friends back in the late 80s. This was a really nice reminder that thrash is indeed "the stuff", at least as far as I'm concerned. I love a lot of other kinds of metal but, probably because of those ties to hardcore punk, thrash has a special place in my heart.

  • @Eluarelon
    @Eluarelon Před 2 lety +19

    tbh, the "big 4", for me, have ever only been the big 4 in terms of name recognition and success. Love them all, but in terms of musical quality and consistency, I take bands like Testament or Exodus over them any time of the day. And yes, I might be biased, but to me, Kreator is the greatest Thrash Metal band to ever grace this earth. Add Sodom and Destruction, and you have my "big 5" ^^. As a little aside, for us Germans, that phrase "über alles" has a pretty special, and negative, connotation because it's part of one of the verses of our national anthem (the part that is strictly forbidden to sing because the Nazis used to sing it all the time). So I am pretty sure that Kreator had that connotation in mind when they wrote this track.

    • @mightymet7062

      It’s not forbidden to sing. That’s wrong.

    • @Eluarelon
      @Eluarelon Před 2 lety +1

      @@mightymet7062 Yeah, you're right, I've got that wrong, so thanks for correcting me on that. It's not legally outlawed, but it's also officially not part of our national anthem which only consists of the third verse. Still, there's a very strong taboo about it, and if you sing it, you automatically identify yourself as a Nazi. Which, unluckily there's still a few around these days.

    Been a fan of Kreator since their first release back in 1985. That's right around the same time I first got into Slayer, so I found all these awesome bands at around the same time. Sodom is still one of my all time favorite bands, and Destruction was incredible for the time. I have listened to a lot of Tankard in my time, but I must honestly say I never considered them to be in the same league as the other bands mentioned. They were a lot of fun to listen to, but were much more light hearted overall (imo anyway) then the others.
    I've heard this song on Liquid Metal a number of times now and I was very happy to hear how good they still sound after all these years.
    (Fun side note: Tankard's 'Total Addiction' song was played at one of my friends NA, Narcotics Anonymous, meetings back in the late 80's to show the dangers of heavy metal related to addiction. Remember when metal was the source of everything bad?)

    What is interesting for me, that older bands like Kreator do experiment a lot, and the young thrash bands here in Europe are too similar to each other, trying to be truer than the truest of them all. Well, there are a few exceptions, but in those cases, they almost switched genres, like Lost Society or Dust Bolt. But in the end, the last two Kreator albums were too melodic and less thrashy for many of the fans- but for me (a huge melodeath fan) both were quite amazing. Phantom Antichrist is a genial record, even after almost 10 years, it did not get rusty at all.
    Back to the main idea, for me it seems that in the US, younger bands like Vektor, Havok etc. are really trying to be unique in a really good way, and less, basic tica-tica sounding, new thrash bands get the media attention.

    When Kreator announced Gods of Violence and released the first single, I expected them to have slowed down a bit. A bit more melodic, maybe a bit more focus on big chorus, that kind of stuff. And they didn't really. Hate über alles though... absolutely epic chorus, I cannot WAIT to be there when they're touring again, and it's just all-in old school thrash, fuck yeah. Always nice to hear a bit background on the gear and production, myself being more of a "that sounds great... I have NO clue why, but it does" guy.
    And yes, I don't think Mille will be singing a lot of the chorus live 😅🤘

    Kreator, since violent Revolution and since Sami have been in the band, melody has been their second secret weapon. Ventor is their 1st! An amazing band that like Overkill, Sodom, Exodus, and Testament are still killing it with their modern releases!

    I love Kreator! And it's not even German bias, these dudes are quality and they formed more than 10 years before my birth ('94), so as you said about their age it's awesome how they still shred along and are so active!
    As a suggestion: have you ever seen Starkill - Fires of Life? The Music will fit you even though this song is pretty old and they ofc did new stuff, got a female singer and such, but this song is already a classic in my heart and I'm always happy, when my playlists bring it up

    Slayer/Kreator is almost almost the same. And this is from a guy that had his own stool at the recordstore when they got there record delivered at Wednesdays. I always had a pile of newly delivered metal albums to work through. Some of them I took home, and some of them went out in the store. Those were the days. 🤘❤️🤘

    But am I the only one who gets distracted by the rhythm changes, f.e. between the Chorus and the Verses? :O

    Seeing the flames while listening to Kreator brings me back to 2017. I've seen them live on a really small festival near my home town in Germany. I stood in the 2nd row and felt those flames. At some point Mille picked up a CO2 cannon and shot it at the crowd. I will never forget this mix of hot & cold plus the awesome music!
