- 5 important lessons HBO’s new animated series can learn from the wonderful Puss in Boots: The Last Wish movie.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish: (also known as Puss in Boots 2) is a 2022 American computer-animated adventure film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. The sequel to the spin-off film Puss in Boots (2011) and the sixth installment in the Shrek franchise, it was directed by Joel Crawford and co-directed by Januel Mercado, with a screenplay by Paul Fisher and Tommy Swerdlow, and a story by Swerdlow and Tom Wheeler (the writer of the previous film), based on the character from Shrek 2 (2004) and inspired from the fairy tale by Giovanni Francesco Straparola. The voice cast includes Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek Pinault reprising their respective roles as the titular character and Kitty Softpaws, and are joined by Harvey Guillén, Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo, John Mulaney, Wagner Moura, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and Anthony Mendez who voice new characters introduced in the film. Set after Shrek Forever After (2010), the film follows Puss in Boots (Banderas) as he goes on a journey to find the mystical Last Wish for the Wishing Star by teaming up with his friends Kitty Softpaws (Hayek) and Perrito (Guillén) to restore the first eight of his nine lives that he lost, against two groups consisting of Goldilocks and The Three Bears Crime Family (Pugh, Winstone, Colman, and Kayo) and "Big" Jack Horner (Mulaney), who try to reach the star before him, and a mysterious hooded wolf (Moura), who plans to hunt him down for his last life. Puss in Boots The Last Wish Movie review and comparison.
Velma is an American animated mystery horror comedy series based on the character Velma Dinkley from the Scooby-Doo franchise. Developed and created by Charlie Grandy for HBO Max, it stars executive producer Mindy Kaling as the voice of the titular character, with Sam Richardson, Constance Wu and Glenn Howerton in supporting roles. Grandy also serves as the showrunner of the series. It revolves around Velma Dinkley and the other human members of Mystery Inc. before their official formation. It is the first television series in the franchise to not feature the Scooby-Doo character.
The series premiered on January 12, 2023 to mixed reviews from critics. Velma show review and comparison.

This begs the question... does Caillou in fact deserve the smoke?
I mean he looks like he dies
Mindy Kaling as Caillou in an adult remake would be ... not quite as jarring as she is in Velma.
The character? No. Caillou is a kid and doesn't know any better.
The show? Yes. Caillou is a show about an annoying brat crying and whining his way to victory while his parents do nothing to teach him anything.

-kids will think the action is cool
-older kids will be impressed by the story and characters
-Adults (at least my mom ha) will appreciate the message

One thing I appreciate immensely about Puss N Boots TLW is that is has generated so many positive reviews and commentary. After Rings of Power, She Hulk, Blood Origin and Velma, it's nice to hear about a story and characters that people enjoy.
Couldn’t agree more. Refreshing to have the majority love a film like this
She hulk could have been good but it just ended up bad like yeah she's powerful but the thunder clapping scene was bull hulks clap should of sent her flying like a goddamn ragdoll in Gmod that has a thruster tied to it
@@theenderdestruction2362 ya the worst part about she hulk was that they ruined her character for a joke (and yes the show was confirmed to be a troll)
@@ezialb1387 I don't read a lot of comics, but from what I've heard, she was an incredibly sympathetic character who genuinely cared for Bruce. The show made her... not that. So disappointing.
@@kurosan0079 exactly, idk if you’ve seen hulk and the agents of smash but the she hulk in that show was actually a really good and enjoyable character unlike what she was in her own show
They somehow made a mature show less mature than a kids movie
Yeah
Unfortunately, that's how most adult cartoons are nowadays
I have to agree
I think it's because their idea of mature is cursing left and right, dirty jokes thrown around everywhere and many more which is so stupid
They even managed to make it a worse comedy than a film that doesn't have comedy as it's main genre. I mean... what 💀
Puss in Boots is like "Maybe the real treasure was the friends we made along the way" done right.
In fact, it could be, ""the real last wish is the friends we made along the way"".
It closely follows the want vs need arc, not just for Puss but for Kitty and Goldilocks.

@@REKRAP17 and death said it was intoxicated
Here's a large part of why Velma's constant rudeness is insufferable: she keeps spouting things she can't possibly know to one-up random characters, so it feels like the show is coddling her in particular, and she should've gotten punched in the face for a lot of the stuff she spews but nobody ever reacts like they register what she just said.
What's the point of an annoying jerk if we never get to see them face any consequences?

I would of loved it if she and the gang got stabbed and then we watch their stabber run around and do thier job and like the guy (who we have no idea thier race is so there's that all we know is he white and he speaks English) litterly solves a lot more mysteries then the gang because whilst he stabbed them he at the very minimal is trying to help his community and through him we can get some actual good writing and If they did do this and they did it right I would love it if he never gets caught like at all and he's still running around but let's be real here that ain't gonna happen in a million god forsaken eons
@@theenderdestruction2362 amen 🙏
@@REKRAP17 I wouldn't call Death a villain, per say; more of an "Antagonist". An Antagonist is someone who opposes what the protagonist goes for, a Villain is someone who takes pleasure in the crimes he commit and cares not for that. Yes, Death kills off people, but that's because it's his job. He just so happens to have a hatred over the idea of cats having nine lives, because they tend to squander that notion. I'm actually happy that Death is not a straight-up villain, and I do enjoy how he contributes to the journey that Puss has to go through. Sure, his methods can be unethical at times, but he loves his job, and seeing that he lets go of Puss because he learned to value what's important, it just gives me a big smile.
Oh yeah, and BTW, what you said about the Scooby-Gang being some kind of family, I don't get that in "Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated". Someone at WB is like "People must've liked Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated, because we made them unlikable. Let's do this again and take it to the max!" Yeah, this is why I favor "Be Cool, Scooby Doo" over "Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated".
$10 says that in any other scenario you believe that punching someone in the face isn't a justifiable response to speech, no matter how rude.
I love that Puss in Boots never treated its audience like a bunch of dummies. I mean even kids are mature enough to understand that you could get a panic attack when you're extremely terrified. I'm just in awe of Puss' character growth. He immediately talked to Kitty after mentioning the santa coloma past with Perrito
a family movie and a kids movie aren't the same thing. This wasn't aimed specifically at kids, this was aimed at all audiences.
Kitty? wasn't she in one of the previous Puss in Boots movies?
@@Elliottblancher yep
Exactly
To add to your comment, it also becomes relatable to the kids since the wolf itself is terrifying to them. Seeing the main hero justify that fear and then seeing his journey to confront his fear makes the kids cheer for Puss In Boots
I loved how Puss in Boots portraited Death and Puss's reactions to it. The panic attack scene wasn't watching Puss panic, I FELT it too.
When you see his fur standing on end, you know exactly where he's getting the chills, down to the direction they travel.
What I think they did was what they do in horror movies, they put these subtle sounds, beyond human hearing (idk the exact name for it, something with sound waves) that subconsciously give you that eery feeling

One of the more important things I noticed: Puss in boots doesn't seem to hate it's target audience like the Velma show does.
Hating your audience appears to be an issue in a lot of media nowadays.
Puss in Boots loves audience
It's part of what caused the sequel trilogy for star wars to crash and burn. They thought of star wars fans as misogynistic icel types, so they destroyed the original trilogy characters to "teach them a lesson" and prioritized preaching and worshipping some female characters despite the lack of good writing and plot

@@petergriffin-tu6ug yes. It's one thing to have a fresh take on a classic idea, but don't belittle the fans of the original. You can poke fun at some of the originals flaws, sure! But it's got to come from passion for the story and respect to the fans

I liked that Death was the form of a wolf instead of something typical like a skeleton or faceless figure because most times a wolf is the antagonist and doom of most classic fairy tale characters (Little Red, 3 Pigs, Boy Who Cried Wolf) and fits the mold of the Shrek universe. It’s a nice subtle touch. It also doesn’t call itself out as a stereotype of wolves being the bad guys and leans full tilt into the role. Straight up death. Like you said it feels great to enjoy a villain again.
Well said!
Because he death straight up
@@code066funkinbird3 wolves control far far away.
There’s also some other symbolism, like how wolves are known to be able to chase prey for days without getting tired. Fitting for a being who has no problem chasing down his “prey” for however long it takes.

"Make the characters likeable" or at least relatable. Puss is relatable for adults watching because he's experiencing growing up and getting old. At some level Puss isn't entirely likeable (at least at first), rather he's a celeb in his universe. But it works because he loses the star power and become a genuinely likeable (and relatable) character.
Well said
Since nothing last forever or not everything is forever young
A lesson from a comparison like this is that media consumers should occasionally expect a high bar from the media they consume.
Not every product needs to be a masterpiece, but for a kids’ movie to be THAT good, and for a non-kids’ show to be less-than-stellar… it should be a wake up call to creators and producers to up their game significantly.

I know Puss in Boots TLW would have been scary as hell for me as a kid. I had a big fear of wolves, so Death would have given me nightmares. I'm in my twenties now, and wolves have since become my favourite animals, but Death still made me feel fear through the big screen. He's downright terrifying, and I love him!
It definitely could be as scary as hell for sure! Couldn't agree more, he was terrifying and amazing!

I mean the original Velma though...
I found the whole gang hot
Yes even the dog scooby doo
The panic atack scene in poss in boots is so good that you are not watching a well potrayed panic atack, you are watching poss having a panic atack becuase death is upon him and perrito calming him down, giving a payoff for when he said he wanted to be a therapy dog. Meanwhile velma's is so bad that you are not watching velma having a panic atack and been calmed down by shaggy over the phone, but a writter forcing her main character have a panic atack and the only way she knew how to writter herself out the situation she put herself in is make another tool character open her heart to her and then having velma, the main character who is suposed to be the writter herself laught her ass to her best friend feeling and then calming down
I love how you brought this up. A lot of characters that are aimed at kids are often loud and annoying, trying to make everything into a joke. Seeing Perrito just be there for Puss showed how sweet and actually empathetic he is, as opposed to other characters.
Velma needs a therapy like 💀💀💀
What´s even better is what Perrito did is EXACTLY what therapy dogs do when you have panic attack - they do not try to get your attention, "snap you out of it", but lay their head on your chest (feeling the rythm of dogs calm breath helps to slow your breathing down as well), waiting until you calm down enough so you can react. So yes, even more added layer to this scene.
@@veronikamajerova4564 he literally calm him by being a bed
My favourite thing about Puss in Boots was how it completely gripped my 3 year old when I took him and my older kids to the cinema.
I'm used to having to keep him quiet during showings because 90 minutes is a long time to keep still, but he was completely focused on the film.
When Death lurched out of the shadows in the cave and said "FEAR!", he fell backwards in his seat in shock, but didn't cry.
Small thing sure, but it sticks in my memory :-)
I’m happy this movie is getting the attention it deserves I remember having low expectations when I first heard about the movie but I gave it a chance and it blew me away felt like the old dreamworks
Guess boss baby just left a bad taste in my mouth which is why I had low expectations I’m happy with the direction they’re going now

Here is what made Puss in Boots: The Last Wish so great:
DreamWorks didn't attack fans
They didn't change the OG characters. While Puss' design was slightly changed from how he looked in the Shrek movies and PiB, he was still a ginger cat and Kitty's design was the same
It had a great side character in Perrito
It had great baddies like Death and Jack
It had a great story
It wasn't woke
Indeed
The Harley Quinn show did the same “take a character trait or quirk and dial it up to eleven” approach that Velma is alleged to have done, but managed to do so in a way that really allows them to explore the nuances that were always hidden within the character to begin with… making them feel like an exaggerated alternative to previous depictions.
The best example would be in how Clayface’s performing arts background often takes a backseat to the trauma he suffers in being a monster, but in HQ, he really just relishes in the opportunities that his abilities provide him as far as self expression is concerned… he seems more liberated by his abilities than feeling cursed. If anyone has ever watched a role player in character creation for a new game, you probably found watching Clayface taking on a new form and imagining the back story for it to be a very familiar experience… if you are that role player… you probably found him relatable.
Harley Quinn’s background in psychology actually becomes a core storytelling device within the show, used to explore both herself and other characters in a way that more serious projects have only recently tinkered around with, and not nearly to the same degree that the Harley Quinn show has. Harley Quinn’s traditional relationships with Joker, Batman and Poison Ivy all also get put under the microscope within the show kn a way that really feels in character for each of them within the context of their interactions for most of their story. The only one that really breaks from their character is when we get Suburban Step Dad Joker not going on a murderous rampage to get Batman’s attention… but then they use this to explore what a more law abiding Joker who turns his chaotic energy towards trying to improve his community… and does so purely out of spite over an entitled Karen.
It is mature satire over a long beloved franchise, and it does carry political signaling in places, but anything is a potential target, and the jokes are actually clever enough to land, and everything is done out of a clear love for the source material.
Couldn’t agree more. Well said
I've been streaming that recently and I whole-heartedly agree. I mean hell even Joker became a somewhat different character by the end. It had you rooting more for the Rogues Gallery than the Justice League.
@@ivantheterrible2594 What I’m really hoping for in the next season of Harley Quinn is that Mayor Joker appoints Jason Todd as his new police commissioner, just to see the Rogue’s reaction to it.
Key ingredient: talent
velma actively hates its own target audience, theres a "joke" where shaggy asks velma if she knows what 420 is, and she responds with "its code for adults who still watch cartoons".
That 420 statement really infuriated me!
What that even means
what is a 420 by the way?
The best joke in this movie has to be
"We've been in worse pickles" "Who told you that name?!"
Along with Puss In Boots 2, Rise of the TMNT is another good example that was different and still respected the source material. And like Puss In Boots, their animated movies were fantastic and had incredible animation and storytelling with amazing character development.
A better comparison is Netflix's _WEDNESDAY_ Respects the source material, likable characters, engaging murder mystery. You know the things _VELMA_ doesn't have.
Any movie can compete with Velma, And the movie puss in boots the last wish is a better comparison like I mean WEDNESDAY has very cringe moments too and some unlikeable characters although don't get me wrong I love the show but it's not better then puss in boots

I have insider knowledge of Puss in boots.
It’s got a ton more adults than, say, Encanto. My friend works at a theater, and he noticed this difference. I can tell a lot of different movie lovers were very pleased by how the movie turned out too based on how many reviews and analysis videos there are.
I think for now this is my favorite movie
i found this so accurate and insightful!! puss in boots did so many things right writing-wise and i think you summed it up wonderfully :)
Thank you so much for the kind words!
just saying, Perrito has the backstory kaling would use for a "cool" edgy character (id it was dnd it would be drow rogue darckblade shadowblood the deadly) yet they made him so wholesome he is the best dreamworks character since Toothless
If there was a crossover, Perrito would likely get gravely hurt, Death looks at him, turns to a Velma charaand go "you're taking his place" before killing them and Perrito getting better.

So so good
I think one thing was that it also blew my expectations out of the water.
I wasn't expecting to even care. I thought they were just milking a franchise like every other animation company.
But knowing how Kung Fu Panda 3 wasn't that bad... I gave it a chance
And boy was I blown away.
I also love how as a studio they took the risk of doing a different art style than normal.
It shows that there's real artistic talent that is making the creative decisions.
Not just CEOs. Looking to find the next biggest profit.
Couldn’t agree more! I wasn’t even planning on watching it…
so many of these shows try so hard to write "strong female characters" while puss in boots just had great female characters. Goldilocks stole the show a lot of the times, mama bear was the emotional core of the family, kitty softpaws was a fantastic character with her own goals, motivations and flaws. The Shrek franchise in general has always had awesome female characters that aren't just love interests or overcompensating mary sues who can't ever make mistakes and I love it for that.
Agreed
Dude i stan Kitty.
The last Wish is a 10/10 film, Velma is in the negatives and even a 0/10 feels generous
One is a beautiful construction on mature topics, complete with gorgeous animation, music and voice acting.
The other is VELMA.
Factual
Lol
Perfect breakdown of both.
If you want to see a proper origin story deconstruction of the Scooby Doo cast- especially Velma, Watch Mystery Incorporated. In that show they actually veer into dangerous territory making her insufferable too, but then they USE it to tell a story about how that is bad and she comes to realize (like Puss for example), she was wrong.
Like you, I actually had been thinking about how amazing it is that this so called "kids movie" does adult entertainment with something to actually say, better than supposed "adult" shows like Velma. It's really just pathetic and ironically more lazy than a kids movie.. because they aren't at all trying. They just do self inserts and crass jokes and lots of racism apparently, and thats adult somehow.
Another legit 2d animated adult show that took it's job seriously was Invincible. It's got all the usual possible tropes, especially with being crass.. But characters have consequences for those attitudes, and the consequences are so extreme.
The creators of Velma clearly hate animation, Scooby Doo, and just used it as a vehicle for their own BS. Really sad.
Ive gotta watch Mystery Inc! Appreciate the kind words so much!
Great choice of comparisons. It's an old take, but I'd say that Mystery Incorporated Velma's personality tends to be closer to Daria: intelligent, socially awkward, and constantly dropping snarky one-liners. Also, despite the early 2010's animation industry not allowing them to be open about queer content, the series does a better job of showing a queer awakening than the new series in my opinion. Most importantly though, it's actually funny
I’ve generally found things made for all age groups are the best, because they aren’t lazy bc “just kids” and they can’t shock you because there are kids there, so they actually have to make a good story
Step 1: Make sure your goal is NOT to destroy a beloved and well known franchise.
Velma failed this step.
LOL
What could Velma learn from Puss in Boots
1). Everything
I specifically liked your point about how Puss was arrogant, full of himself, overconfident, yet still likable. Its rare for me to dislike characters. Like i only ever tend to dislike a character if they are narcissistic. Puss is like that, but I strangely never found myself annoyed or irritated by him, like I would be with other arrogant characters. Is the movie's writing just *that* good? That a character with a personality trope I always end up hating, is actually one of my favorite characters in the film?
One thing I take away with Puss in Boots 2 is
I will never stop fighting for this life
The thing about Velma is that even the animation can be bad at times, even with just the clips I’ve seen it’s still rigid and the characters don’t move in interesting ways. But puss has so much detail and quality to its animation that you could watch a scene 10 times and you still wouldn’t get all the details
the panic attack scene, the first death encounter(not including the one that he's just standing wathing puss fighting giant) and the goldi old memory's is what stuck in my mind while watching Puss in Boots, and i'm glad i didn't have to watch Velma because everyone warned me to not do that, heck even youtube is giving me daily dose of what is wrong with Velma show.
i miss Shaggy, Scooby, and the Chad Fred
i read a comment somewhere that (and correct me if im wrong, or if the comment was wrong) says something along the lines of "the way Velma deals with panic attacks is wrong and kissing someone under panic could most likely increase the severity of their panic attack, meanwhile puss in boots handles it in a realistic and proper manner"
The problem is that studios just don't go their own direction anymore. They all copy each other until 1 studio takes a risk and goes their own direction, and when that risk hits and everyone loves it, every other studio then rush to copy it to try to pull the same success.
Rick and morty did something different and got popular so now everyone's trying to copy the same meta, comedy shows.
Spiderverse tried a new art style and everyone loved it, so now everyone's trying to copy this 2.5D animating style.
And now that puss in boots has been a terrific hit because Dreamworks tried something new, you can bet your @$$ you're gunna see movies popping up later that tries to replicate what puss in boots did and likely fail to the point of annoying the audience.
*the last wish* is straight up fire, period
facts
i think perrito kinda represents the joy in life
Yeah definitely! Good point
I have a thought for a au where perrito is life it's self and at the end of the movie he shows himself to a be a giant brown colored wolf that then walk away
The last wish was by far one of the best shows I have ever watched, I absolutely loved the variety of characters and overall it was a really great storyline
Fun fact, a massive inspirational part of The Last Wish is from influence of Into the Spiderverse! And I think it was the only saving grace for Puss considering the movies that were being churned out were so degrading for fans that, on the second I saw the title card for the first trailer, I skipped it because I assumed it would just be another cash grab. But, come to find out, it isn't! It's phenomenal, and I haven't even seen the full thing!
Velma and Wednesday though? I'm never giving Velma a chance, already hate the person behind it because she took her tiny ounce of fame way too far to her head and this is why you need to check yourself before the money gets orgasmically insane in your mind. Wednesday? I couldn't watch it. It wasn't her at all. NOBODY in that show is an Addams member. It just.... It's been getting worse since that one less recent animated movie in 2019.
""Both targeting different audiences..."
Velma show isn't even targetting an audience. They're attacking the audience. XD
Velma disguises major flaws in characters as qualities and personalities to more accurately reflect the people who made the show, while Puss in Boots reveals character quirks that people thought were qualities because most people have at least a bit of these deflect themselves as flaws and makes the character go through character development to fix them, also teaching the audience those lessons as well.
You know it's bad when a movie about a walking cat one-ups you by a mile
In fairness
That movie about a walking cat is a bit of a future classic
There are plenty cats movies that are better than Velma
Except Cats
One thing I like about the movie is that it has a style where everything looks painted, like it would in a story book, usually an artstyle like that would make my eyes hurt but in this case I think it adds to the overall movie
Yeah I think it adds so much to the fairytale vibe they were going for!
To me Puss In Boots feels like animation telling me “I know It’s been bad but hey. On the bright side take a look at how good animated movies are getting.” While Velma just seems to be pointing out everything wrong with modern animation.
Velma is a clear example that no one understands why it’s always sunny works with its mean spirited humor that’s tempered by a morality that always puts them down
I love how mean spirited the cast of It's Always Sunny are, mostly because they are always trying to hold some moral high-ground over each other. It's hilarious to watch self-centred characters have their plans fall apart for their hubris. And when they do achieve slight victories, it's always against equally selfish characters, or incredibly petty (like poisoning an opposing team or beating up children).
Who knew a kids movie is better then most movies I can think of
I didn't watch this vid, but I can tell you that Velma can learn from anything to be better
If people cheer when your main character gets ran over, you have done something wrong.
Lmao so true
This was really well made and entertaining! I totally agree with this video, and I love the way you showed what Velma should have done right that Puss in Boots did!!
Thank you so much! Means a lot!
Fun fact:
In Rotten Tomatoes, Puss In Boots 2's audience score and critic score are way higher than Avatar 2
At one point the Last Wish maxed out the tomatometer
the moment velma said "I'm not dissing her, she really has no brain!" in the trailer I knew this would become memorable in the wrong ways
A full minute talking about the qualities of The Last Wish and I completely forgot this video was about Velma.
For bad guy thing. You aren't the only one. I didn't like a hybrisotopliac but I always believed a good villian could make a good story. They are suppose to be the catalysis of change in routine. So it's more how they do and why that really intrigues me.
Jack Horner is a psychopathic monster who knows he's a psychopathic monster
Velma is a psychopathic monster convinced she's not a psychopathic monster
Caillou is proud to no longer be the most hated character now.
4:57 the sad thing is that's probably one of the "better" joke's in Velma
Lmao
No for me it's the Mexican joke
Also Velma is a self insert.
I am 100% sure that the person in charge of this did not watch Scooby Doo, was just given the job to make a show about Velma and used it as an opportunity to make it about her own self.
Velma has no soul and is the result of corporate hell and soulless writing. Puss in Boots The Last Wish is a passion project filled with soul, love, and heart.
The "kids" movie somehow much more mature and reflective than the "adult" show is whats wrong with western cinema imo. Since animated media adaptations found more success in recent years seems Mindy underestimating the media fan's intelligence with low quality character work, story telling, and comedy. Never underestimate your audiences.. Especially nowadays
Exactly. I much prefer animated shows like those from the DCAU. Now those are good shows.
Only critique I have is that death is death, not the big bad wolf. You see if you've been watching this great franchise from the beginning you'd know that "the big bad wolf" made his 1st debut in "shrek" and proceeded to have multiple cameos in each new installation and even holiday specials.
I think that death is actually the generic aspect of it, since a lot of fairy tales depict wolfes as big scary monsters that are evil, so i say that's why they gave him the appearence of a wolf
I don't think death was meant to be THE big bad wolf, just so happens to also be a wolf. I either heard or read somewhere that many fairy tales would use wolves to drive cautionary tales, which is why they made death a wolf.
I also think Death was initially referred to as “The Big Bad Wolf” in the promo material so that the real twist; he’s actually death itself (straight up), hits three times as hard.
Yeah back before I knew he was Death I was confused cuz like, "isn't there already a Big Bad Wolf? Unless they're planning to retcon him like they did Stiltskin..."
I think the reason why he is a wolf is that since he wasn’t revealed to be death in promotional material, they didn’t want to make it to obvious
Nah but legit the dog was such a well made character. At first I legit thought that he was just going to be that annoying character in every show but by the end I was surprised by how different he was
About cheering for villains, there is this ancient saying " we follow the heroes, but we love the villains"
I've always wanted their to be an adult version of Scooby-Doo. And there's nothing wrong with trying to do something different. But it still has to be done right. And from what I've seen...I'm just completely disappointed.
I wanted an adult version too! I was so looking forward to this series…

The difference between Kaling Velma and Big Jack couldn't be anymore blatant. One is a horrible, irredeemable monster who takes pride in bullying others and feeling superior for the fun of it, and the other is Big Jack Horner.
Shots fired!
The panic attack boots has is so fucking relatable it made me cry and I hate/love it
So true
Nobody can get shaggy right; we can only hope to gain 1% of his excellence.
the writers of Velma did the exact opposite.
Velma is Mindy Kaling venting her spleen, dressed up as a franchise so the money people would invest in it.
Before Puss in Boots TLW I had pretty much given up on western animation. I can’t pinpoint exactly when it was, but, suddenly, the companies who use to set the bar could no longer scratch it. (Let’s face it, Disney is only surviving through its parks right now. Encanto was the creators’ success, NOT Disney.)
Then I saw this. As I left the theater, I thought, “Finally. The Dreamworks who gave me ‘The Prince of Egypt’, ‘The Road to El Dorado’, ‘Chicken Run’, ‘Shrek 1 & 2’, ‘Kung Fu Panda’, etc. has returned.” I finally feel like the films of my childhood aren’t gone, & that they might even come back.
In the extremely unlikely event that anyone from Dreamworks reads this post, please don’t stop. Look at the positive response from Puss in Boot TLW & recognize what your audience wants.
A criminally underrated western animated movie was Wolfwalkers, it's not made by any of the big studios but it has so much heart put into it and it makes such an spectacular use of 2D animation that it deserves more recognition than it gets, specially considering how 2D animation is practically dying in the west.
@@stargazer162 I LOVED ‘Wolfwalkers’! It brought me back to the classics of animation. I can’t stop watching it. PnB TLW is a ray of hope for the big companies.
Disney better watch out!
Add rise of the guardian in your DreamWorks list too
Puss in Boots handled panic attacks way better than Velma
I mean the animation was Incredible the hand is sliding through her skin this whole imagination thing is kinda scary
Just recently streamed Puss in Boots, I think this is a great step into demonstrating the potential of the animation medium as well as how to make a well rounded and entertaining story. Not going to bother with Velma but I can say that the meta characters trope was cool done as a rare exception. Like Deadpool was coo because he was lesser seen and hadn't really been done before. Clearly the industry is seeing this and saying "More of this=More money" but it's not the case when it lacks scarcity, and becomes the entire product.
even underrated series like Nexo Knights are way better than Velma , everyone who see this tell me would you rather watch Velma or Nexo Knights ( also tell me why )
The old Fred I loved. He was nerdy with traps but was likeable.
The message of valuing your life works cause it’s not In The audience’s face.
When a kids movie is more mature than an adult animated tv show, you know you'd done goofed.
This is one of the few videos that actually acknowledges that meta humor can be good. Most of the videos on velma I've seen simply say that meta humor is just straight up bad. Meta isn't bad itself, the way velma and many other shows do it is awful.
For a good example, take a look at the duck tales reboot.
I think meta humour is kind of dangerous territory for writers who don't know what they're doing (which I'd guess would be most cheap comedy writers working for netflix). A lot of the time, it can just seem like sitting through hours of some writer telling us why they think certain tropes are stupid.
I'm not sure if it's a perfect example, but the episode of It's Always Sunny called "The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award" comes to mind. It's obvious that the episode is a meta-commentary on the actual show not winning awards while parodying other shows. But instead of just telling us tropes are stupid, the humour comes from the characters trying and failing to emulate those tropes, because of their abrasive personalities.
It also doesn't exactly help that in Velma, the messages they try to push don't match what they actually show. For example, they try to claim that handsome white guys have it so easy, but look at how Fred is actually treated throughout the show. There is child abuse (that comment about his dad putting cigars out on him), he's arrested without evidence, shot by the police, body shamed repeatedly, put on trial still without evidence, put in jail without evidence, tasered, he's bullied, his mother apparently planned to murder him (or stick his brain in a jar, which is not exactly better) because he isn't interested in running the business at 15 (or 13, if you consider that she's been working on this plan for a while) instead of just raising him better... Yes, they wrote him to be an unlikeable person (just like every other character on the show), but that doesn't change the fact that what they show undermines the "white guys have it so easy" message.
forgot this was a comparison already, because I was so entranced in puss in boots and then the Velma jumpscare came
What a great video my freind :) I'm glad Shrek universe still alive as ever.
Great presentation and review! Best I’ve seen yet. Well done!
See, clone high had a decent amount of meta jokes, and had an unlikable protagonist.
But it was 1. Actually funny 2. Had some likable characters (jfk is a dick but a likable one) 3. Had enough variety in characters to not be too boring
And 4. Great art and music
One thing about Velma, for a new Scooby-Doo show/movie, how are you gonna forget the most important aspect; Scooby?
Because she said that talking animals are childish...
While movies like Puss in boots 2 and the lion king taught us about some deep messages that are more for grown ups while Velma taught us how to be a dick
The fact that the thumbnail seems entirelay possible

I do want to ask off topic, are you worried about Shrek 5's animation style? Will it go by the 2.5D style or the realistic style but a lot more updated? What are your thoughts since for me I'm wanting to stick to traditional style, I wonder how perrito will look tho!
If the film is going to be a direct continuation to Shrek Forever After I would assume it would use the same traditional style as that film. Maybe this 2.5D is saved more for spin off fairytales? Hard to say though, I’ll be interested either way they go!
I don't really care what animation they used, as long has a good story and well-written characters if Shrek 5 really happen
@@divadiva1968 good jokes are also important to shrek films

After watching The Last Wish...IDK, I think it'll be difficult for me to go back to the old style after seeing that new cartoonish style. Comparing the way Puss in Boots looked in the Shrek movies to now, I can't help but feel that the old version looked ugly.
Always good content. And the new intro is great, keep up the great work.
Appreciate you man!
Love your take on this! Beautyful.

Marvelous examination! Also, the only way the thumbnail could be any better would be if Velma in it was depicted wearing a dunce cap!
Superb vid. Thorough insight. Remarkable juxtaposition! This is neither flamboyant or divisive! Well done
^Idk wha this really means but good video! Felt like sounding smart today on the Tube
Hahaha appreciate it so much!!
Velma seems like the even worser version of Teen Titans go. I still cant believe that Puss in Boots portraited literally everything including anxiety and panic attacks perfectly. (not exactly perfect because nothing is perfect but still very good)
very fitting opener "Ooo lights even, what do you guys think? Woo!" sounds just like Perrito XD
Puss in Boots 2 did such a great job explaining anxiety. When I saw Puss having a panic attack, I felt sad for him because I know how it feels. Your heart’s racing, you’re running out of breath, you can’t feel your body, and everything is just so painful! But then of course help is on the way.
I know it may sound crazy…but there’s also another film that depicts anxiety very well in PAW Patrol: The Movie. Chase had a fair share of his anxiety of Adventure City. So, when they had to go there to stop Mayor Humdinger’s madness, when there was a Humdinger Hyperloop train coaster made and the passengers were trapped on there, Chase tried to save them, but realizing it was way too high, that’s when they depicted a panic attack VERY well! I’m not gonna lie, I love the movie and I felt very bad for Chase when he had that panic attack. Normally you’d think it would be a dog basically cowering in fear, but when you get reality distortion, sounds fading and a heartbeat speeding up frantically, that’s when Chase has that panic attack.
There’s also another to name in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3. In one of Rocket’s flashbacks, when he frees Lylla, the High Evolutionary blasts her dead with a blaster, Rocket is wailing over this, and Floor begins having a panic attack while yelling “ROCKET, TEEFS, FLOOR, GO NOW!!!” over and over again. That broke my heart.
Velma on the other hand sucked at explaining it. I do not wish to explain why.
I love how Velma isn't even clever in the clips I've seen
Damn, for the whole video I was thinking that I was watching some video from a multi million subscriber channel and then I see that it hasn’t even broken 1000 views! That is criminal! This is really good and you deserve a whole lot more engagement. Liked and subscribed.
