The cartel scares me so much. The reason why I'll never ever step foot in Mexico is because i have an irrational fear about them.
Mexico is a big country, cartels are mostly in border cities, and in about 3 states, the rest is pretty safe. Yucatan is one of the safest places on earth.

I'm not sure about texas, but I've crossed the San Ysidro border many times (San Diego - Tijuana border). There isn't anyone checking you when you cross via car from the US to Mexico. They only check you when you come back to the US
