  • Toni Morrison exists in two worlds: the visible world, bustling around her, and the world of her novels, whose characters tell about an interior reality hidden from the eyes of strangers. In her work, Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison has transported millions of readers into the experience of being black in America and confronting the realities of race. In this program, Morrison discusses the characters in her work, the people in her life, the power of love, and how the invented world of fiction connects to life.

Toni had the ability to make words dance. How she carefully chooses each word in both her work and in conversation is so inspiring to me. Strong, yet delicate. A force of light. She's the reason that I am a writer today.

I don’t how I can miss someone I never met, but here I am. Though I never met her, we knew each other. Everything she wrote was a love letter to me. And each word of hers I read was a thank you to her. I hope you’re having a ball in paradise, Ms. Morrison.

0:55. I love the way she looks at the diploma she receives. She looks satisfied, proud. It’s a moment between herself and the diploma in hand. No one else is around.
    I miss her terribly.
And also the quality of interviewers like Bill Moyers.

To the contrary, she says that is the cry of hopelessness. People are starving for love. "It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." Love can lead to pain, but true love is the most powerful force in the universe. The Bible says, "God is love." My mathematical bent requires me to point out that when the verb "to be" is used like that, it can be thought of as an equal sign!

i think you have to address the guilt, and replace it with openness and acceptance to genuinely walk in the shoes of someone else. i don't want to speak for Toni Morrison, but i am a black woman and a poet as well. In interviews, i care more that the interviewer is genuinely interested in my work, open, a good listener and asks good questions. Essentially, that my perspective does not make the interlocutor uncomfortable; rather, it adds meaning, context and substance to the conversation, as per intended.

Yes it is because anti blackness is epistemic it transcends time. It about a universal thought process. Everyone (by group), everywhere, all around the world, carries is anti-black ideology. People in Korea bleach there skin because being darker in skin meant you were a field worker and of lesser social status. There reasons are detached from the trans-Atlantic slave trade but the the colorism still follows the rule. To be of lighter complexion, means you’re beautiful, wealthy of greater social status. So racism in its essence is older than race based slavery that’s simply derived from that ideology.
