Irma Leaves U.S. Virgin Islands Residents With Close To Nothing (HBO)

  • Seven days after Hurricane Irma devastated two of the three major U.S. Virgin Islands, access to communication lines and critical supplies remain spotty and residents across the islands’ do not know how long recovery will take or what it will cost.
    The U.S. Virgin Islands are typically thought of as lush tourist getaways in the Caribbean. But the hills have turned brown. Many of the islands’ approximately 100,000 residents, who are American citizens on American soil, insist that the Category 5 storm was unlike anything they’ve weathered before. Irma is responsible for at least 38 confirmed deaths across the Caribbean, four of them in the US territories. The storm’s 185 mile-per-hour winds and water stripped away the entirety of St. John and St. Thomas of plant life and, according to USVI Governor Kenneth Mapp, left well over fifty percent of properties destroyed.
    Vice News’ Antonia Hylton spent time with residents who have almost nothing left.

      Thank you, for being so kind. I was a victim of Irma, it was terrifying. I cried and thought I was going to die. I contacted my friends and told them. Bookworm51485 trust me, the Virgin Islands recovered very well from the hurricane. Some of these people were very scarred but I just took some time. I was wondering why this lady was saying no help came. We ( national guard) was activated a couple days after to help fema with recovery. My and my fellow soldiers homes were affected a couple of weeks later on St. Croix by hurricane maria. We were hit about as hard as St. Thomas was by Maria. Power was restored to almost the entire island in a few months. Some areas are still being restored. But the VI actually benefited in some ways from these storms in the form of federal assistance.

    MOST homes are made with steel reinforced concrete and concrete block walls. The roofs are usually made of wood. Most of the homes that were damaged or destroyed SURVIVED 140 mph Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and 115 mph Hurricane Marilyn in 1995. Homes built after that mostly remained intact; they were built to the new building codes that required homes to withstand winds of 145 mph. Homes built after Irma will have to withstand winds of 165 mph.

      liquidminds It is common sense that Penises that go in Vaginas make babies . Education is necessary but if someone doesn't know how to tie a shoe, should there be a semester class on how to tie a shoe. These people are adults, although some are young.
      i never said they shouldn't reproduce but i do believe it is a form of child abuse if you cannot afford a childs needs.

    • @liquidminds
      @liquidminds Před 6 lety +8

      Daniel Solano It's also common sense, that "making babies" is not the only important issue about sexuality. If it was, we'd go into centers that test our DNA to find the perfect mate for us to have the optimal amount of babies with.
      We are humans. Sex is also fun. Love is about emotions and trust. It should be common sense that emotional love, the desire to have sex for fun, the desire to have children with and the desire to form a living community, do not necessarily have to be only one person all together, as much as it should be common sense that picking the ability to have or not have children, out of all the properties we could value in humans, should not be the only one we think that matters.
      If the ability to make babies was all that mattered, we'd have a 3rd gender that includes infertile men and women ...
      But I'm sure mommy and daddy told you that's how it is. Changing your world-view into considering that they might have told you the same BS that they got told as a kid, is too much to ask I guess...

Buildings that I have known since childhood were either completely destroyed or rendered unsafe to live in. All trees on the island were barren afterward, and we didn't get power until late November. St.John itself was almost completely isolated because there were sunken boats in the harbor, and we only had one actual helipad on the island. I know many whose homes are still unfit to be lived in but are because they have nowhere else to really go. All the things they said were 100% true, even if time has passed its not cool to make jokes about it.
