The Conference - Official Trailer

  • On the morning of January 20, 1942, in a villa on the picturesque Lake Wannsee in Berlin leading members of the Nazi regime came together. SS, Reich Chancellery, ministries, police, administration. Reinhard Heydrich had invited them to a "meeting followed by breakfast". This meeting would go down in history as the "Wannsee Conference". The sole topic on the agenda that morning was what the Nazis called the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question": the organisation of the systematic mass murder of millions of Jews throughout Europe.
    The Conference follows the minutes of this meeting as recorded by Adolf Eichmann, of which only one copy remains, and which is a key document pertaining to the Holocaust.
    In the tradition of Downfall and Son of Saul, The Conference is a gripping examination of the cynical nature of humankind’s violence unto itself and is a startling reminder that these very horrors perpetrated could happen again.

    Any movie that updates this drama for a new generation has my support. Having said that, the 2002 Branagh movie does an excellent job of bringing this historical fact to a wider, global audience owing to the fact that it is in English, and most of the people here can watch it without having to read the subtitles.
    One of the advantages I find that the 1984 German version has, aside from an excellent cast of notable German actors working at the time, is the fact that anybody who understands German can't help but be struck by the euphemistic and technocratic language used in that meeting.
    It serves the purpose of hiding mass slaughter behind the language of implementing bureaucracy on a level that puts this version above the later one.

      My 40-year-old Straßedeutsch was simply not up to it, but I did try to see the German version and you make a fair point.
      Even in a room of fanatic anti-Semites, the conference attendees just couldn't or wouldn't use the words 'murder' or 'exterminate'. I think that 2001's 'Conspiracy' did a good job conveying that bit of parsing the language even in English.

    • @davidlasdon457
      @davidlasdon457 Před 5 měsíci +7

      As good as that movie was there's something sanitizing watching a movie with British and American actors creating the characters. Presenting the evil of Reinhard Heydrich in the language he spoke provides an intense reality.

      @carlhicksjr8401 Před 5 měsíci +3

      @@davidlasdon457 You make a valid point, and one that I agree with.
      But on the other hand subtitles don't convey the sheer workaday banality of the Conference for English speakers. I really think that the attempt to plan something this monstrous as if it was a normal high level business meeting is the vital point that needs to be gotten across to all audiences. This was not a 'plot' or 'conspiracy', it was a program. The Holocaust was a matter of national policy and every single ministry of German government was complicit in it.

    'Humanity' had already lost by the time this conference began.
    At this point, humanity had pretty much broken down. Lest we forget, in 1941 the Germans were focusing on killing undesirables with pistols and sledgehammers and starvation. The Soviets were utilizing terror and summary executions to motivate a will to resist...the Americans were using concentration camps on Americans of Japanese descent, the Japanese were utilizing biological and chemical warfare on the civilian population in China...
    What is horrifying is that the Conference depicted here is an attempt to bring some ordnung to the ongoing chaos...because in the chaos there were signs that the ordinary German was becoming unwilling to do what was necessary to enact the 'Final' solution. German soldiers were finding that they could not actually continue with the killings in the same way.
    So...the killing was industrialized. Bureaucracy was created to ease the passage of evil.
    Truly, humanity is terrifying.

      Humanity lost the war before it even started. The moment the regime was able to reduce a person's worth or standing below that of other people allowed the regime to proceed down this course. With each step, starting with the Enabling Act, then the Civil Service Law, and then on to the Nuremburg Laws, humanity was further reduced and the barbarism of the regime became justified in its eyes.

      Have you been here, history wise?
      The North American Indian Holocaust - Kahentinetha Horn
      *The "final solution" of the North American Indian problem was the model for the subsequent Jewish holocaust and South African apartheid.*
      *The term "Final Solution" was not coined by the Nazis. It was Indian Affairs Superintendent, Duncan Campbell Scott, Canada's Adolph Eichmann, who in April 1910 plotted out the planned murder to take care of the "Indian problem",*
      Hitler was surprised the Americans were upset with what they were doing to the Jews. Keep in mind they killed gypsies, pagans and atheists for their non belief in Jesus.
      Hitler admired the US on how they treated the "lesser" races of Black - Brown and the Jews.
      Why is the biggest holocaust in all humanity being hidden from history? Is it because it lasted so long that it has become a habit? It's been well documented that the killing of Indigenous people in the Western Hemisphere since the beginning of colonization has been estimated at 120 million. Yet nobody wants to speak about it.
      Today historians, anthropologists and archaeologists are revealing that information on this holocaust is being deliberately eliminated from the knowledge base and consciousness of North Americans and the world. A completely false picture is being painted of our people as suffering from social ills of our own making.
      It could be argued that the loss of 120 million from 1500 to 1800 isn't the same as the loss of 6 million people during World War II. Can 6 million in 1945 be compared to 1 million in 1500?
      School children are still being taught that large areas of North America are uninhabited as if this land belongs to no one and never did. The role of our ancestors as caretakers is constantly and habitually overlooked by colonial society.

    The actor playing Heydrich , dosen't resemble him one bit! First and foremost Heydrich was blond, and his looks here does not give him credit. Remember years ago, there was a series called 'Auschwitz . The nazis and the final solution ' A bbc documentary on the development of Auschwitz cocentration camp. And interesting documentary. In one of the episodes they showed an reenactment of the wannsee conference, a very short one. With very few dialogue, it was just to make point of the conference. The actor there that played Heydrich was very convincing. He resembled Reinhard Heydrich more then any movie i have seen. Another thing is the ss uniform Heydrich wearing here. The symbol above the left chest pocket ,i have never seen the real Heydrich's uniform . He is also lacking most of the medals on the same (left) pocket. Also he is also without the SD cufflinks symbol on the left arm. Strange, since he was the highest chief of all security apparatuses in the Reich security main office, after Himmler! And of course the SD, which he took over/ created back in 1931.

      To be fair, most actors ever cast for Heydrich in film (except one, Detlef Bothe, who I believe you referred to, he played Heydrich in 3 films) haven't at all resembled him in any way. Heydrich had a very distinct, almost weirdly Asiatic look that's hard to match with available actors. Very tall, long-limbed too, large hands, etc. Very distinct appearance indeed. Brunette hair aside, I always thought Adam Driver would've been a closer match and fitting candidate for the English-spoken film "The Man With The Iron Heart".

Interesting that you mention 'Asian ' , i remember when i was younger ,i saw a picture of Heinrich Himmler , almost like a portrait of him,and next to him was a similar picture of Hitler. You have probably seen that picture i think of. I think it is from 1936, he is dressed up in his black SS uniform ,in brown shirt and his SS coat displaying his Reichsführer collarpatch. I didn't know back then who Himmler was, but i did know that nazi Germany was allied to Japan, and Himmler did appear to look very Asian, japanesee infact. I thougt it was a japaneese leader. Talking about resemblance, i do remember an antoher SS officer, that resembled Reinhard Heydrich. I don't know his name, but if you have seen the footage of the 1936 Berlin olympic, when Hitler is walking at the olympic field , and you see a little girl give Hitler a bunch of flowers, you see an SS officer in SS black runs to the front, to be to some kind of asistence. Don't know who he is , probably some kind of ' aide de camp' to Hitler.

      There seems to be some obsession with finding actors that look like Heydrich as if physical resemblance is the key to an actor's portrayal/performance, although I'd agree that getting uniform details right should be standard practice. Productions, scripts and actors all make choices that some will disagree with. In this case, it's also somewhat of an issue whether the approach is that of a documentary or a drama.

      "conspiracy" is a caricature of the actual events with the typical 'good-guys-vs-bad-guys'-BS. it's aimed at a 'less informed audience', that cannot tell apart a gauleiter from a sturmbannführer and doesn't care too much about historical accuracy.
      the two worst parts are that it a) completely misses heydrich's point of being in control, _but at the same time_ making the others responsible for the decisions as well. and b) it depicts eichmann as a tyrannical superior, instead of the 'banal clerk' he was.

      I disagree. Branagh (to my opinion) played the Heydrich character all wrong. IRL he was more felicitous, especially with SS comrades. Oh, it was insincere, but it was there. Branagh made him into a caricature. Again, and this is my opinion only, the portrayal of Heydrich in Conspiracy belied much of the true evil, or as Hannah Arendt characterized it, "The Banality of Evil" that was so well personified in the actual Heydrich even more so than in Arendt's subject, Eichmann.
      As an interesting aside, Heydrich's father (Bruno) was a popular and well known, if not in some circles renowned, Opera singer and composer. In his Opera "AMEN", there is a song called "Reinhards Verbrechen" (Reinhard's Crime)! Talk about foreshadowing of things to come.

      'Conspiracy' was made for Anglo/American consumption. It's in English, it has well known award winning celebrities starring in it (who are not German), and although its source material are transcripts from the event, it is still from the Anglo-American perspective. These things provide a 'comfort level' that may have influenced your opinion?
      While not a documentary, the subject matter is based on historical events. It is not a remake of 'The Little Mermaid'. At the end of the day, does it give any insight into the German perception of that part of their history? Does it tell the same story as the other film? Other than it's artistic presentation, how did it make you feel about the participants? Which one had the greater emotional impact?

    Dear editor, I think you've made a fundamental mistake, by choosing to cut the trailer in this fashion.
    The Wannsee Conference and thus the Final Solution wasn't a supervillain, action film like turn of events. It was a cold-hearted, clinical operation on an industrial level that led to the killing of millions of people. It is exactly that that makes it so horrific. It wasn't an act of emotion. It was planned, precise and effective. Because of that, I think that you've missed the character of the events by choosing this style of cut. To whoever is reading this: The film is brilliant nonetheless, it depicts the potential of evil of men very well.

    • @generalposter4792
      @generalposter4792 Před rokem +11

      Correct. I get it. But the only reference to these movies are some minutes found from Martin Luther. However, there is nothing else to determine "how" things were discussed. The 1984 version had all the characters as smugly joking around during most of the conference while they talked about killing everyone. The HBO one had more glum seriousness and less of the joking and left off the female secretary also at the table. That's why I thought the 1984 version was best because these guys were discussing the destruction of 11 million Jews as if they were planning an office party. And it just made it more evil to me at the relaxed nature of how they all discussed it. This new 2022 version (Die Wannseekonferenz) in German that is being released with English subtitles and renamed 'The Conference", looks more like the HBO version but as I noted, the characters actions are written to display different demeanor and personalities in each.
      So bluntly don't mind the remakes because neither is like the other. The scripts are based on those captured minutes. But the writers each take different liberties as to how they interpreted what might have been said and how the characters "might" act. Each portrayed different in each movie. So again, don't mind seeing the remakes.

    I saw the German original (1984) after I saw the English (newer) version of 2001. They are both great. I think what helps the English version is: Kenneth Branagh who is always out of this world superb, and the other actors, Tucci and Firth both well known. The German version, seems, of course more authentic.
    But is ok if they do multiple versions of the same subject. New generation need to know this, and if they can deal with multiple Willi wonkas, they certainly can and should see this one.
    Finally, I agree with others that the name “conspiracy” is not an accurate description of the event. The event was an actual conference.
    Conspiracy refers to concatenation of disparate pieces of info that are put together to make up a story or the reason for a particular event: JFK assatination, Moon Landing, etc. most conspiracies remain conspiracies and few are proven right. This wasn’t the case of the holocaust and the men in the room were not conspiring, they were setting up the procedures needed to be in place in order to carry out the orders of Hitler.

    To watch this confrence in German is quite shilling since you get the language of those actually involved. In the hbo movie you could at least pretend it was fiction
