@@dgl3089 It was based on an amalgam of young Sean Connery and the description in the book. Which is funny that it ended up resembling Roger Moore (you aren't the only one who said it!)
It's kind of funny you don't kill the enemies, you're just inexplicably putting them to sleep. But then it's all taking place in Bond's head anyway and they never really existed in the first place. So why in James Bond's imagination are they just sleeping? Does that imply he also thinks they're just sleeping when he shoots people for real?
Psychological it could tie into how he hates killing in the book and then "just sleeping" is a justification as a way to not think about all the people he killed
The whole guns only putting enemies to sleep gives me flashbacks to playing Arkham Knight. Who knew that been fired at by a giant turret, getting ran over at high speed and driving over the enemies only results in you being lightly concussed😅
You can certainly tell the creators of this game are very much Bonds fans them selves and must have had a lot of fun creating it :) Hearing you say that you love the stealth elements just screams to me Calvin that you HAVE to get Metal Gear Solid 1,2 and 3 now. You certainly put a lot of people to sleep in MGS 2, i'm not joking ;)
Splinter Cell would also be great, especially since the first game was briefly pitched as a James Bond game before getting folded into the Tom Clancy brand. And a lot of concepts in that game actually look like holdovers from Bond, to the point where the Splinter Cell games (pre-Conviction that is) feel like if James Bond was written by Tom Clancy rather than Ian Fleming. Yeah I know Clancy himself didn’t create Splinter Cell, but he did have some oversight and endorsed it, so the games are very much written in his style.
I never knew you could connect Playstation controllers to, in my case, a macbook. You've just made my playthrough of this game far more accessible and enjoyable so thanks!
I'm so glad we have such a unique story to go along with this game. It could've just been a simple cash-grab style of game, but instead they actually got creative with how to explain all this. I love it! I'm always a fan of when the Bond series gets a little more comic book level of crazy like this. Loving what you're doing Calvin. Keep it up👍
I'd still love a Bond game that's just exploring the Bond world. You can create your own story teaming up with anyone from Trevelyan to J.W. Pepper with a number of locations and gadgets. With 25 films worth of characters and location I'm sure any Bond fan would have a blast playing around with these famous heroes and villains.
I've been playing through James Bond 007 on Game Boy, and it's super funny to see that you make enemies "sleep" in this game when you can hack enemies apart with a machete on Game Boy. Hope you get around to that game soon! This one looks pretty darn fun though and good fanservice, I hope they're able to fully complete it!
Played James Bond 007 for the Gameboy quite a bit back in the day. I last played it in 2007 and it is still just as much fun to play now as it was then. Really enjoy spotting all of the references to the various movies released up to 1998. Also, the game was referenced in the recent Dynamite comics James Bond story Himeros. Really enjoyed seeing featured as an Easter Egg in another form of media.
I can imagine a Bond fan computer geek getting asked to develop this! “I’m invincible”! If you know, then you know! (Just watch out for the pen clicks)!
Honestly, the stealth is pretty cool. As a huge Metal Gear fan I’m always looking for more stealth games. Will be checking this one out for sure, but I hope we get a proper console game soon
Excellent Calvin! I haven't played a Bond game since TWINE on N64, but your enthusiasm makes me enjoy your commentary on the games. Look forward to your future reviews!
This video has really sold me on the game, I was expecting it to be far more cynical when I heard about it, and I definitely didn't think it'd have such an in-depth story. It sounds like playing it would be a good way to get my Bond fix for a bit.
All jokes aside (my last comment) I've come to really enjoy your Bond game reviews, and especially the little Bond snippets you put into your videos (TMWTGG, FYEO clips). I'm completely won over to your channel at this point. Now I need to look into the Fleming novels. I've never read them yet
Hopefully they'll release it on something "not Apple" when all the content will be out. I'll happily buy it (hopefully on Switch but wouldn't mind getting it on PC or PlayStation if that were the only choices).
Hope this game should win the awards for the best app game in The Game Awards this year. We will expect more levels including vehicle levels for Cypher 007 to stop Blofeld like The Spy Who Loved Me and in the vehicle section that you can pilot a boat and car.
I'm very intrigued by all this - I hope it sets up a return to some more stealthy approaches (as opposed to blunt instrument) in the next movie Bonds! Really want to play this.

It reminds of of the first part of Die Hard Trilogy on the PS1 a bit. I used to adore that first part of that game. This feels like any Black Ops game rebadged when they realised the game was a bit formula. Still great to have a new game at least.

What a joy to see your review of this game. I felt very sorry for you going through the Gardner books. This game is much more your thing. It looks Quality much better than I had imagined. Maybe not the full guns blazing Bond game but it's more intelligent than most by the looks. The story and the stealth elements are refreshing to see and the graphics look very cool too and yes that does look a bit like dear Roger. I will definitely check this out and see if I'm compatible with it. I'm hopeless at games I always seem to die on the first level. Top Review as always Calvin.
Originally I wasn't going to play this because it looked like another low effort mobile game and likely had microtransactions like most Free-to-Play games. Now I'm not going to play it because I don't have any Apple products. I'm honestly pleasantly surprised at how much heart was put into it and a bit disappointed that it's exclusive to Apple Arcade. They are doing themselves a disservice if this stays an exclusive a year from now.
I’m really enjoying it. Infinitely better than World of Espionage. I don’t know what more you could do with a mobile game. It’s so nice to have a pick up and play on the go Bond game
Calvin, speaking on the Roger Moore likeness, have you recently revisted the film CANNONBALL RUN with Roger’s James Bond/Aston Martin scenes? I watched it yesterday and what a trip down memory lane! Still holds up! What an ensemble cast! The bloopers during the end credits are fantastic! Take care!
This is fascinating. I've thought for years that Bond could really use a reinvention in the same vein as _Batman: The Animated Series._ A blending of all the best bits from the books, films and other media to create its own identity as an all-purpose James Bond. Wish this was more prominent, because I think more people could get behind this. 😁
I’ve just come back specifically to watch this video after playing the game. It took me about 3 hrs per chapter. I really liked it, and played it all on an iPad and surprisingly didn’t have any issues with the controls. The left ‘thumb stick’ automatically moves to where your hand naturally is positioned, which made it a lot more comfortable. I loved the cartoon-ish art style, yet it still had a grown up vibe about it, which looks brilliant, especially in some levels with the way the shadows are cast. I loved that they went with Roger Moore. I too, really liked the detail in the levels. Particular stand outs for me were the tube station level which looked so realistic, and I loved the outside levels such as the coastal village. Trying to get *into* the MI6 building in chapter 1 was a really cool concept. For me I’d like to see more story elements and interactions with other characters, and see more levels introduced which add different styles of game play to mix things up, as well as more puzzles and ‘things to do’ rather than just defeating the baddies. Which to be fair it felt like they were trying to do with the second chapter. Maybe it was also just me not being very good, but I wasn’t able to find *any* of the blueprint collectables, which meant that I couldn’t upgrade any of my weapons, which then made collecting everything else seem a little redundant. Also holding down the button for 5 secs to collect the intel collectables about 50 times per level got a little tiresome. I think I would like to wait until the whole of the rest of the story gets released before I considered renewing the subscription. But I would definitely recommend playing the first 2 chapters with the free trial for sure! I am excited to see what concepts they come up with next, with user feedback I am sure the next stages will be even more fun and creative.
Great game! I've not completed many levels yet because a) I'm not great at gaming, and b) as you said its great to pick up for 10-20 mins, so I've only had a few plays so far. Graphics are great, locations are awesome, love the MI6 environment from Skyfall. Good mix of reality and cartoon, they really have struck the right balance for a game you can play on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
It reminds me of an ARPG mixed with metal gear solid and I love it, kind of wishing this wasn’t locked behind a monthly subscription, if it was released as a standalone for sale, I’d buy it for sure.
I've only gotten up to Alec's arrival but I'm loving it more than I thought I would. I like how it's merging all of the franchise together in such a loving, fannish way and the recreation of the interiors is gorgeous. I do take slight issue with Bond's look and I say this as someone who loves Kev Walker's depiction of Young Bond but an adult Bond should have his hair swept off his forehead (and ideally jet black). The Dynamite artists have been killing it with Bond's look in the comics recently so I can't complain too much and tbf at the time where there's no Bond actor it's nice that there are multiple representations of Bond.
Very interesting I just had to drop a comment that recently myself I've really been enjoying the Bond books I finished Casino Royale and Live and Let Die and then I thought they would be really old timey and boring and hard to understand but I actually find they are really well-written and I find as a bond fan it's fun to kind of pick the bond of your choice that you could imagine in the role I mean for Live and Let Die of course I was thinking of more and for Casino Royale you know I was thinking of Brosnan so I definitely want to continue the series it's very quite interesting again thank you for your passion and around that franchise
Great video, Calvin! Honestly, this looks way better than I thought it would. If you like the concept of Bond being brainwashed being revisited, you should definetely read With A Mind to Kill by Anthony Horowitz. It serves as more or less a direct sequel to Fleming's The Man With the Golden Gun.
I have a question for you Calvin. What time period would you like to have IO Interactive James Bond video game set in? Me I'm hoping the game would be set in 50's or 60's like the original Ian Flimming's novels.
I've not seen anyone mention Invisible Inc, however to me it does remind of that game in several ways - plus that is available to play on pc from GOG. Great fun to play.
I'm loving all these rumours about Bond 26, some ridiculous, some fun. While we always get this speculation in the media, I do find it fun to consider the rumours of what could be. On that note, one I've read in a few places is that the bone of contention of Nolan writing and directing is not merely that he wants full creative control, but that he wants to do at least two films (EON prob happy with that) however set in the 1950's! EON's apparent fight back is that they want it to be set in the present day so as to keep the series relevant to today's world and to casual viewers, and more than likely because they get a lot of the budget through product placement, and you can't showcase the latest designer wares with a 50's setting. I loved The Man From UNCLE movie keeping to it's 1960's origins, and all the style with it, but sadly it underperformed, although got great reviews and a cult following. Not sure if the period setting can be blamed, as Warner Bros are going back to that decade for the new Ocean's movie. It certainly was an interesting presentation to most spy films. So I do think it is an intriguing proposal for Nolan to keep it faithful to Fleming and start the series with Bond in the 1950's.
Wait a minute, a mobile james bond game suddenly comes out and is good...either I'm hallucinating bond youtube videos based on previous james bond youtube videos I have seen or we're living in a very weird but good timeline.
Huh, guess this turned out better than I thought it would...I'm actually interested in playing it now. Gonna wait and hope they'll port it to Switch or Steam or whatever once all the content is released though.
And now you should play Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty and try to find all the James Bond references; one of the obivous one is of course that one the main quest is called You Know My Name.
Nice to see you getting to review something Bond related and brand new [the first since 'The Sound of 007' last year]. I'd love to see a 'full review' of the game when it's fully available as your video game reviews are great [your epic Nightfire video earlier this year was excellent]. Maybe a video on '007's Road to a Million' will be the next 'new' review even if the format might make it difficult to cover [There clearly confident of it being a success as Variety [hence more reliable that most Bond rumors/reports] has reported series 2 is already in the planning before series 1 has dropped]. 8:17 I think this is really a handwave for any continuity issues, lack of likeness to film actors and allows for re-visiting old missions+ bring back dead enemies [certainly better than what 007 Legends did]. I'd re-watched your '007 The Duel' review recently and the use of old villains reminded me of this a bit.
@@DafyddBrooks Sorry, should have been clearer- it's not out yet [reports say maybe November this year on Amazon Prime]. Interested to see what it's like or if it has that much to do with Bond given it's a 'reality' show hosted by Brian Cox. Eon have approved it [along with Amazon+ MGM] but a production company called '72 Films' describe themselves as the 'makers' on the audition website.
oh right i get it now haaha. ofcourse its not out as Calvin would have reveiwed the show already, silly me. just thought i'd say that i finally saw AGENT CODY BANKS for the first time yesterday. not bad actually, i recomed, especially for all the bond influence in it @@jamesatkinsonja
With comparison to the last mobile "game" that shall not be named, there's more effort into its style here, far from a cash grab. Especially the unlockable outfits (does the clown outfit make an appearance?) and story premise. Can't play it at the moment, they better reconsider an Android version someday....
As for new Top 10 ideas. You've already skipped my ideas of top 10 firearms, top 10 disguises, top 10 repeated images on posters. Knowing you, you'll probably do the Top 10 Bond Animals, with the Pigeon at #1. I think the double take animals are memorable, but the Spider ranks above the Snake, the Tiger and the Angry White Cat for me. Although the sharks are up there.
Apple arcade has quite a few gems now and for the super low price it has actually become pretty nice to have! I just love the cloud saves so I can play on my phone when i’m out, play on my ipad at home and sometimes play on my tv (via my imac) with a controller too!
@@k.b.7718 you can also play on an appletv device on your tv. If you can get one used it’s not very pricey but I’m not sure it’s as worth it if you plan to only use it for apple arcade and not the rest of the features. If you also have Netflix you could combine netflix games to apple arcade and turn the appletv into a little console.
I think the sleeping thing is just so kids can play it as well. I mean it may seem funny (It is), but that's probably the reason. Other than that, I need to get an Apple Arcade account once my finances are in order.
It's a great game. Reminds me of old style Metal Gear. Just wish it was playable on consoles or with a controller. Takes me awhile to get used to touchpad controls.
Yeah I totally agree with you Calvin on this part, because Bond in this here new 007 video-app-game, looks similar to Roger Moore and but has my brown eyes instead of Roger’s blue eyes, and but still has his red-hair…… I guess yours are brown eyes too!?:)
I played through the first level on my iPhone and had fun.. admittedly tho, I think I’d prefer playing it with a traditional controller, as my fingers and the controls on this game don’t jive too well 😂 but it’s nice to see a Bond game given proper TLC and not just a cheap cash in, or COD beta
Some gameplay elements give me Metal gear solid vibes. That being said, it makes me want to wait for the whole game before I play it. You didn’t mention it so I suppose there is no voice over but just text to read ?

I love the style and levels in this, very creative
Good work Calvin. Love the full game breakdown
I hope this game gets a full release with actual guns on PC/ Consoles. I'd gladly pay for it
I second the previous comment. I would be interested to hear what you think of the premise of a Bond themed reality show.
That DualSense controller might still be the greatest innovation in an otherwise incremental console generation.
Great game and review. It makes you wonder what a First Person Shooter version would be like, Cypher 007 FPS? Keep everything the same, etc. Thanks.
I've not seen anyone mention Invisible Inc, however to me it does remind of that game in several ways - plus that is available to play on pc from GOG. Great fun to play.
A lot of the stealth here is similar to the Metal Gear Solid games, which I hope you'll cover one day.
So I do think it is an intriguing proposal for Nolan to keep it faithful to Fleming and start the series with Bond in the 1950's.
love this game, i would like just more levels.
I'd re-watched your '007 The Duel' review recently and the use of old villains reminded me of this a bit.
still need to get around watching that show. is it any good??
@@DafyddBrooks Update-trailer [lasting a whole minute!] has now dropped saying it's out in November.
@@jamesatkinsonja Just got it hahaha, cheeers mate
I wasn't expecting it, but it does look like it's a lot of fun! Maybe I'll try it thanks yo the free trial.
Calvin my guy the ultimate 007 chadtuber xx
The Bond somehow gives me the vibes of the AUF Bond in terms of design.
Looks like the upcoming Stargate timekeepers game
How was the music? Did Cypher get the license to the Bond theme or does it have generic "spy" music?
Apple arcade has quite a few gems now and for the super low price it has actually become pretty nice to have! I just love the cloud saves so I can play on my phone when i’m out, play on my ipad at home and sometimes play on my tv (via my imac) with a controller too!
I can only play this with an apple device tho, right? Sadly that would be outside my budget these days.
If they wanted it to be accessible to as many people as possible (assuming they still needed funding), it'd be on Netflix, not Apple Arcade.
Is skyfall still your favourite?
Dang it has been a while since a new James Bond game came out ... least someone's still thinking about it. :3
Google how to hook a traditional controller up to your device, the game plays great on controller.
Looks good. Let's hope they release it for PC.
Will you ever do a playthrough or stream it?
Hopefully we'll get a playthrough or full review once the game is fully released.
If it gets ported to console I’ll give it a shot, but I’m not really into phone games.
What was ur favourite chapter?
Some gameplay elements give me Metal gear solid vibes. That being said, it makes me want to wait for the whole game before I play it.
You didn’t mention it so I suppose there is no voice over but just text to read ?
Would you keep updating on the chapters like maybe reviewing them once they come out ?
If i had an iPhone I would not mind playing this but as I am on android it's kind of a. Shame that we are left in the cold but that's alright I guess
Suggestion: How about a video that analyzes and discusses the similarities and differences between Ethan Hunt and James Bond?
