DIY Tesla Tire Rotation

  • I try never to pay for something I can safely and effectively do myself. As long as I have the factory tires on my Model 3 I intend to rotate them at home for free. Here are some ideas how you might accomplish this yourself with one jack, one jack pad, and a used donut spare tire. No fancy or expensive jack/stand combos or multiple jacks. This method has been used previously for ICE car tire rotation where only one jack was available.
    This method swaps front to back and side to side. There are several methods of tire rotation, and the default "Tesla way" does not switch sides. I subscribe to the idea that differential lateral loading and direction of drive rotation causes uneven wear to the lugs and siping of the tires. Rotating the tires so that each one will experience right and left side loading, and both directions of drive thrust, will result in the most even wear possible throughout the life span of the tires, possibly prolong the life slightly, and result in a better traction, however small improvement it may be.
    It's just not that hard to rotate tires in this way and get the best result. Have a watch, see what you think.
    If you plan on buying or leasing a Tesla I would be honored if you used my referral code: EDWARD93928

    Good to see you again, Ed! I enjoyed the classes you taught years ago at FliteFest. I have a fleet of 4 vehicles and rotate tires Front-Back. I bought 2 small 1.5 ton Harbor Freight floor jacks so I can safely jack the whole side of the car at once. I had cut some round pucks with a slot from a 2x4. I always griped that they don't supply or at least sell something like that with the jack. That jack point system for Tesla looks smart. So after watching your video, I looked and found that they do sell round slotted pads on Amazon for that use. I just ordered some. Thanks for the tip. HF should sell them.

    Great video and very helpful! Just got a new MY with 19" Gemini wheels. Spare tire prices have gone up..... even at junk yards but I found one on eBay from a Hyundai Genesis that meets the proper measurement specs. For approx $325 I got the donut spare, floor jack, 21mm socket, 1/2" adapter for my cordless drill and torque wrench. I also bought some hockey pucks and screw-in door stoppers to make my own jack pucks. So much cheaper and simpler to rotate the tires than the expensive jacks.

      I was coming here to ask the same question. The junkyards around here don’t let you roam the property, and as I ask around a bunch there is some uncertainty that any 5x114.3 donut will work due to a) the bolt on the brake assembly and b) the Tesla 14mm lug studs. If anyone knows what car is equipped with a donut suitable for this exercise, please advise. Thanks!!

    @GrandadIsAnOldMan Před 4 lety +1

    Great video Ted. I have never done this ever in over 40 years of driving. Probably had too many flat tyres replaced to ever justify trying to even out the wear. I have also had tyres that have a specific direction of rotation so I can't see how you could swap a rear left with a front right as that will change the direction of rotation. Obviously that was one of your stated purposes of doing the swap but that would not be right for that type of tyre. I have no doubt somebody will comment "that is just a marketing ploy by the tyre manufacturers" and I am certainly no expert. Not sure if you mentioned it during the video but obviously you need to adjust the tyre pressure too, certainly all my cars have had different pressures front to back. Sorry if you did say it, I may have missed but I did watch twice to check.

    • @glennstone1357
      @glennstone1357 Před 4 lety

      FYI..... Radial tires do NOT like to have the direction of rotation reversed. They take a "set" (a twist) in the cords in the first couple thousand miles and this should not be changed over the life of the tire. MOST tires are over-built, so, it won't be a concern, BUT, as you near the tire's limits>>> KABOOM..... usually on the front.
      One Old Man to another...:)

    • @2testtest2
      @2testtest2 Před 4 lety

      Where I'm from we need to switch to winter tires for a few months every year, so the rotating the tires comes at no extra cost. With front engine, front wheel drive cars, there is a real significant difference in the wear on the tires front to back, front getting the brunt of the wear obviously. It's simple enough to measure the thread depth, and stick the shallowest on the back, when you are at it. Never even occurred to me that one might have to rotate the tires like this in a non snowy area.

    • @ExperimentalAirlines
      @ExperimentalAirlines  Před 4 lety

      That makes some intuitive sense, but why does Michelin and every other tire manufacturer recommend cross-rotating as I demonstrated?

    • @ExperimentalAirlines
      @ExperimentalAirlines  Před 4 lety

      Good point about the pressure. It's one of many aspects of tire care that I had to choose to leave out in order to focus on the rotation. In this car, all tires are 45 PSI, and there is a digital (vs. "low pressure dummy light") TPMS, so it's mostly an no brainer. These factory Michelins are not directional, and are all interchangeable. The electric drivetrain has massive torque, and I a lead foot, so the drive tire wear is definitely an issue. Conversely, decelerating with regenerative braking is very gentle and constant, as opposed to regular braking, therefore the counter-rotative compensating wear is not available.
      You'd probably get by never rotating tires. You'd be pretty good just rotating front to back. But I like to do things the best possible way, and for guys who share that approach, and have an EV with a big, expensive battery underneath, here is one way to do it.

    You should really go around the "star" twice any time you're tightening a "flange" as the first one you tightened will be looser than it was previously after reaching the end of the "star".
