- Today's video is going to be a breakdown of the Arm Triangle Submission in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & MMA and how I would make these 7 adjustments to improve your finishing rate with this submission.
The Arm Triangle is one of my favorite submissions in BJJ, but like most submissions it can be really tough to finish on a competent opponent when even 1 of these 7 details is slightly off.
These 7 adjustments made my Arm Triangle game way better, and I hope they do the same for you!
A lot of these adjustments have come from experience and time. On top of being a coach for a while, there are a few common problem areas where I see my students often struggle.
Many of these details come as answers to those specific common struggles.
If you were having trouble finishing the Arm Triangle, then I hope these tips were helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Great video, thanks for all the details. Such a deceptively simple choke, but lots of details to mess up, haha.
Exactly dude, I catch people in it all the time and barely every get to finish.
Yes one of my favorite submissions. Thx for the step by step in depth choke
Brilliant. My fav judo choke. Kids learn to do this as a holddown in judo, so when they become adults, they often never learn the choke part well enough. Beautiful.
Wow, best details I’ve ever seen on the topic
Who’s here after Ortega arm triangle win 😂🤣
Great video and detailed explanation with sharing the steps for executing the triangle.
I watched this the night before the chewjitsu open and got 2 arm triangles subs the next day. Thx for the tips!
Good work bro! Nice belt!
Your CZcams videos and podcasts are brilliant! Excellent informative content!
Love the editing and the details. Great stuff.
I thought this technique in my kids class today and then I was able to really chase the sub in open mat. Thanks for these details. It was definitely the key to making it work well for me
Great video as always Chewy
Absolute Gold
Great breakdown 🫡
Easily the best arm triangle video I’ve seen, extremely helpful
Thanks for this. Answers a lot of my questions about this choke.
Thank you. This is one of my favorite chokes.
Appreciate the details Chewey! This is definitely one of the submissions that I have had trouble finishing on some tough rolling partners
Great info. Honestly, at 10:00 in the video, your statement about asking your teammate questions about the position/submission was golden. I don't think I've heard that simple advice before. I'm only 5ish months in so I could use some feedback on my technique and hopefully finish a submission for once.
Great breakdown sir! thanks!
Thanks, Coach!
Always learning from you.
Be well.

Good teaching...thanks!
Good stuff!
fire editing and deets
Awesome video! I was at Fort Knox for training and had a chance to train at Derby City MMA in Louisville. Got to roll with Brandon and pummel with Chewy. First class gym they have there. I’m going to try these details tomorrow in comp class.
Just the vid I needed today after an unsuccessful arm triangle that left me scratching my head
Do these details work in the gi?
Yes, I get this all the time. It's my "go to" submission from mount. These details are even more important in the Gi. It's a slow choke though so don't rush it. They may take a few seconds to tap because they may think they're fine but the lack of blood flow will catch up to them.
If the choke is properly set, you shouldn't have to squeeze your bicep much. The pressure is coming from the head and should crushing down on the arm and neck. Your bicep needs to be tight, but it's not the main part of your body imposing the choke.
im actually 1st to something 😭😭 love you chewy
00:32 Dive the shoulder under the chin - go under the chin
01:23 Get a deeper chocking arm - adjust shoulder if needed
02:19 Use palm down on choking arm - to remove space
03:34 Push with your head to remove space
04:49 Dismount at an angle - Forehead to the ground, lift leg and hook, slide off, push with the whole body
07:27 Start your squeeze at 70% - ramp up to 100% - don't gas yourself out
09:34 Get feedback from training partners
That's really helpful! The bicep grab seems to work great for me but my coach also advises against it, i saw even Ryan Hall and Jordan suggest practicing it without a second arm. With the bicep i can often finish from mount so i usually try it first not to risk being caught in half guard, it also gives me a rest because it's quite stable, and free discomfort for the oponent. If it doesn't work i switch to gable grip and dismount. Does this strategy make sense ?
And even this one 10 years ago 😁. Back then you suggested to drop the weight and keep low rather than drive into the oponent: czcams.com/video/VVo66hr8MTI/video.htmlsi=jFvC2vibZrt8orXD
I like to finish this move with knee on belly. I do this so they can’t roll over their shoulder to escape. It’s how I like to escape this move. I wait till they hope off then I roll backwards over my shoulder.
Step 1: Tax return
Step 2: Up production value
Step 3:????
Step 4: Profit
Can you do a video on new students with high functioning autism?
Is there a specific sturggle you have?
@@Chewjitsu I’m sorry. I don’t have a good answer for you. Thank you for taking the time to respond. Appreciate it.
Another great video my friend! Thank you!
