Stunning example of a great model year for MFG and Johnson! I've always just loved that color interior combination. I'm sure I still have the original catalog for both. Also fun to see it fitted with the high torque 85HP V4 vs the 50/65HP...It really lights off and Goes!
Excellent.......no other words. My Dad had a 1976 MG Caprice 17 Bowrider. Surf Green with a Forest Green stripe! With an 85hp Johnson. Loved it as a kid, MFG had those very cool/odd colors in the 70's...thanks for sharing.
That's a nice restoration you've done there. I have a 1971 85 electric shift on a 17.5 ft boat. Still runs great, but didn't come with power tilt. I have to tilt with my back and change the pin manually. I love the simplicity and those 85s an they could move a boat through the water! I used to slalom ski behind it. Was about a 10 second ordeal of physical endurance to get up, but we had lots of fun. Now it takes my brother and I out to anchor and become beer otters.
Reminds me of my teen years on the St Lawrence River.. Had a 17' MFG with 60 Evinrude. Had two speeds, off and wide open. Those V4's would run all day at wide open, just feed it gobs of gasoline.
Gotta love that 70's styling. I have a 73 Baja V1500 with a Johnson 115 running a 23 pitch Johnson Raker prop. It runs 55mph before it gets to squirly to control. Still have throttle left though...
My stepdad had a 73 25hp, it had the same graphics as this 85hp! I remember a 85hp was huge on a bass boat back then! He only had the 25hp, I dreamed one day I would have what I wanted! I have a 20ft Bullet with 225XS H.P. 85mph gps!
We had a 1971 MFG Caprice 18' w/ Evinrude v4 125 hp in the Long Island Sound in New York. The boat got up on plane very quick. We changed propellers to a smaller size to allow the engine to go full RPM. 40 mph for days! Your color scheme was a few years after mine. Ours had a white hull with blue deck. Some fiberglass repairs later on, but it was still running in 1990. Different engine by then; I want to say Evinrude v6 140 hp. Great boat, handled salt water well.
awesome boat bud excellent condition love the 85 johnson had a 1979 i believe 100 seahorse from 1985-1999 scrapped the boat when the transom rotted out sold the motor to a buddy who still has it and running good on a homemade pontoon boat
Growing up in South Florida in the late 60s my neighbor had a very similar looking boat (Critchfield) also red with a 85 horsepower Johnson outboard motor his last name was Walton also. Funny!!

Nice boat ! Mine is similar I have the same motor. Where do you have the trim pin location which hole ? Mine doesn't have power tilt & trim either great motor !
What a beautiful rig! What time capsule has it been hiding in? Those old V4s are some of the best outboards ever made. Reliable, simple, rugged, and easy to repair/service
What a great looking little boat!!! It is in like new shape, plus those old Johnson and Evinrude V-4s were good motors... This thing should hit 40mph fairly easily I'd say. Was watching this again and didnt notice if there is power trim on this motor, i say that as when he hit it the motor was still in its base/ tucked position and would get at least 1 or 2 mph more at WOT.
@@UltimateManTV hey bro, not exactly sure but the system to avoid is the old style cable setup. Hydraulic would be best but check out all options and choose what's best for you. Have fun and be safe out there as boating is truly the ultimate escape from all that ails you, hit the throttle and try to not smile as spray and wind hits you in your face...
