Not a great day today... one of the things Andy was most looking forward to for our London trip was going back to The O2 and filming the digital displays again like he did back in February. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to, and being told by security that he couldn't use his camera caused one of the worst meltdowns we've ever experienced, with him taking off all of his clothes in the halfway down a flight of stairs in the middle of The O2 and throwing his camera off a ledge, smashing it up beyond repair...

    ABOUT KEVIN CHAPMAN
I'm a 37 year old CZcamsr from the UK. I've got a cracking beard and I'm currently going through the autism diagnosis process. I started this channel back in 2017 and by the time I left my full-time job as a Computer Science teacher in July of that year, my partner Anna was trapped in our house by our son Andy, who is autistic and had refused to go to school for 18 months. Our daughters Lucy and Amy and our dog Dave hardly saw me because I was always working to try and solve all our problems! Today I'm a full-time content creator and always at home when the kids get home from school (all our kids!) and Anna has been able to return to university. This channel is the story of my ongoing journey! Previously known as lollujo Vlogs and The Chapman Family.

As someone with autism who used to struggle a lot as a child with meltdowns, I love that you understand the difference and that it's not his fault. Even at the age of 19 it still happens to me, its like the whole world has gone upside down and theres no way to stop it. I also love that you see that punishing andy isnt the right thing to do, if you were to take more away from him it would make things 100x worse because the concept of consequences can be skewed when you're still very 'out of sync' as ive always referred to it.

you never really “grow out of it” as you have it for life but In some situations it can get easier with age like I have asd and when I younger, pre diagnosis and a short while after my diagnosis I used to have daily meltdowns and as I got older the meltdowns became less and now I have one every few months

Yeah, the poor lad can’t help it. Tantrums are what spoilt kids throw when they don’t get their way.

As a parent of a son with Autism, truly my heart just feels for you. Sending you positivity and the kindest thoughts. I know these situations are heartbreaking and absolutely complicated. The recap was perfectly explained and you need to first give yourselves as parents the credit for always doing your upmost despite the difficulties. Please be kind to yourselves... tomorrow is another day. I know upon reflecting the what’s the why and the how’s you will be thinking of everything possible to support Andy and you all to be able to enjoy outings again another day. Frankly a meltdown based on transitions, rule changing, lack of understanding why and being sensory completely overwhelmed is not always is extremely difficult to say the absolute least, nor are the even able to always be predicted, nor the outcome and how to overcome them but time, love and care to the best as a parent we can. You all did absolutely the best under the circumstances... so please keep your heads high and just know there are many of us who get it and think you are both wonderful parents. 🌟

To be fair it’s ridiculous and pedantic ruling. A camera phone is ok... but a camera not. It’s merely the cannot possibly police phone recording so easily. If whatever device can record... then simply device can record. If that is what the want to stop us the recording it’s actually literally impossible. I personally think these rules may be their for some sense, but seriously not allowing a kid to film digital display boards is just completely nonsensical. No Thanks to security guard number one, for
misinformed advice! Do the security guards just individually make up these rules and follow them as they at their will? Surely not if they are indeed actually implementing and adhering to the NO filming in the O2 protocol. It’s sad that they could not realise the challenges Andy overcomes every, give him strict rules and let the kid film even with their distanced supervision. Guessing that’s way too novel of an idea and caring.
An inexpensive camera phone maybe a way forward for situations such as these. Of course then you have associated costs and that’s so far from ideal. Given costs associated with living with a disability already exist.
May it be fun and long live Andy Go Pro.

Im dreading when he gets bigger. And its deffo not a bad thing that you gave him a camera replacement. Its what he needs to cope then by all means give him what he needs to cope. It was deffo a meltdown and not a tantrum (bad behaviour) because he broke/hurt something that meant a lot to him. So he wasnt trying to gain anything from it as it was his things that broke. His behaviour most of the time is really good in my opinion and a real credit to you both. Andy is such a good boy. You are right Kevin, he should not be punished for something he cannot control. I am sure over the years you and Anna and whoever else have tried helping Andy learn new coping skills. All you can do is show Andy that support while he is melting down. Maybe as his communication skills continue to improve, he will express his frustration differently.

It's so frustrating when things get changed last minute and there isn't any thought to whom this may impact.
I understand your predicament with the "rewarding negative behaviour" but like you said it was a meltdown.
You didn't just give him a new camera, you sympathised with him and understood why he was in crisis but you highlighted the behaviour displayed and told him the consequence if he he displayed similar behaviour again 'he would have no camera'
if you knew about the camera situation and had prepared him and he still displayed behaviour, how you would have dealt with it would be different but this was an unexpected change.
Fingers crossed you week improves x

Disgusted with the O2. Incredible that these pencil pushing idiots can see and intervene about him filming a digital display but can’t intervene and help when he’s in full meltdown and you guys are clearly and understandably struggling!! I want to complain for you!! I’m so angry for you.
My heart broke for Anna when she walked in after you detailed what happened. She looked so broken. Can’t imagine how it feels for her. Really hope things improve 💛

I dont think its pencil pushing idiots that are entirely to blame. I think the majority of the blame has to lie with these security guards in places like O2. Give some of them a uniform then they think they're invincible. I'm also disabled though mine is physical and I've had that kind of treatment from security guards in supermarkets and similar establishments all my life. I've even had it by the police. There needs to be much better disability awareness training given to people like this.

      @HollyBisson Pƙed 3 lety +1

Pencil pushers and those on a power trip in their polyester uniform. I’m sorry you have to deal with this disgraceful treatment and disrespect too. It doesn’t take much to be a little understanding to those that have any sort of issue, does it.
I agree there should be training - but surely basic human decency should indicate that some people need a bit more help and/or understanding

It might be worth getting an aluminium heavy duty case for the gopro if you're worried about it being broken again, they really do become quite indestructible that way but they also turn into a lethal projectile. Good job dealing with the situation though and let's hope it doesn't happen again too often.

I would totally send the portion of this video where you talk about what happened in the 02 TO the 02 management ASAP, along with any footage you have of Andy's meltdown and footage of Anna so unhappy and knackered several hours later if you and she can feel comfortable with that, to hopefully help them understand autism and develop their training accordingly. There should not be such a massive incongruence around the rules in such a big and popular venue, and I honestly find it very suspicious that security caught up to Andy filming so quickly, but took half an hour to notice his massive meltdown.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened, looking at the pictures on Instagram you did go to legoland and If any of the O2 security guards are watching this they should be ashamed of themselves for causing you son Andy with learning difficulties have a meltdown.
P.S I have cearable palsy and behavioural problems I know how Andy feels.
    Sending love from Norfolk.

I’m so sorry that Andy’s trip has not gone according to plan. I hope that you can still enjoy yourselves.
The O2 has cancelled the use of cameras due to it being an event area which is annoying. I know because my partner had his camera confiscated while filming a day out for his birthday. However that was in the event area itself but I suppose with live events being cancelled, they have to extend the strictness due to privacy. I hope you do enjoy Legoland and enjoy London.

One city of recommendation for you guys especially andy is Amsterdam because it is confirmed that they are building a euro star to it and cheap flights also not to far for Andy and lots of trains, trams, canals and boat rides and every time you go to Lego land he loves the Holland windmills that they have just outside of Amsterdam.

I can’t believe they allow you to film on a phone which you could be live streaming to the whole world but you can’t film on a little camera. Makes no sense to me poor Andy it was one knock too many after so many changes he has over come. You are both fantastic parents and such a great loving family. You can get through anything as a team.
