History in Pi Minutes is a series where I look at some popular topics in Disney or Theme Park History and cover them in a bite size format.
Disney does not actually own Tokyo Disneyland.
The Oriental Land Company is a business dedicated to improving the leisure and entertainment options available in Japan. In 1980, The OLC reached out to Disney to build a resort leading to the opening of Tokyo Disneyland in 1983.
Disney as a company is in charge of a LOT of stuff. Their focus and finances are by necessity split. But the OLC is able to put mostly all of their attention fully towards Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySEA. As a result, this resort goes all out.
Even among the high standards set by Disney, the Tokyo theme Parks are known for being two of the most advanced and grandest scale in the world!
They don’t do anything small or simple here.
    Not even Pizza Parlors.
In 1989, Star Tours opened in Tomorrowland in Tokyo Disneyland. The OLC wanted a new quick service restaurant to open alongside it.
So, Imagineers set to work on the obvious first steps of creating a restaurant. Designing characters and building puppets!
This was going to be more than just a place to grab a slice of pizza. There was a whole show for guests to enjoy while they eat featuring a colorful cast of cartoons, puppets, and animatronics.
The Pan Galactic Pizza Port services the whole universe with the Tomorrowland location being the FIRST to be built on earth.
The PZ - 5000 is this fantastical machine that makes the pizzas and Tony Solaroni from the Spumoni galaxy runs the joints. Making sure everything runs smoothly and the deliveries make it to their destinations in 30 minutes or less no matter how many lightyears away they are! All while dealing with his grumpy boss Mr. Foosano.
The show is super cheesy and fun. Full of creative characters.
Above and Beyond what most people would expect from a simple restaurant.
    There was one problem though.
This was meant to compliment Star Tours. But these cartoony, Muppet -esque character designs used in the Pan Galactic Pizza Port clashed with the more grounded, serious, not at all muppet -like aesthetic of Star Wars.
Alright, so maybe Star Wars isn’t the most visually grounded, serious, and non-Muppet -like. But still, the visuals of Tony Solaroni from the Spumoni galaxy was a step too far to fit into the Star Wars Universe which does strive for a sense of realism even in its fantastical designs.
So, Disney wanted a bridge between Star Tours and the Pizza Port. Something that could create a smoother transition between the two aesthetics.
This lead to the creation of Officer Zzzzyxxx.
That is Zzzzyxxx spelled with four Z’s, one y, and three X’s. Obviously.
He works security for Star Tours and monitors the weather conditions on different planets the tours visit. Guests pass by his station while exiting Tokyo’s Star Tours and can then head right to the Pan galactic Pizza Port.
Visually, Zyx’s character serves as a perfect middle ground between Star Wars and Pizza Port. But that isn’t the only noteworthy thing about his appearance.
For Walt Disney World fans, he probably looks familiar.
His figure design was reused in Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe for the one and only Sonny Eclipse! The greatest lounge singer and Astro Organist this side of the horsehead nebula!
In universe, their similar appearance is explained by being cousins. Presumably growing up near each other in New York.
    Not that New York.
The New York on Planet Zork.
All this story and work put into connecting several universes and locations in multiple parks around the world to create something not just entertaining, but logically and visually consistent all for the sake of a simple Pizza Place.

Even though I have literally never stepped foot outside of the US, I would absolutely love to go to these parks, and I’ve always loved the look of old Tomorrowland and such, I’d love to eat there!

Based fully just on photos, I think the aesthetics of Tokyo's Tomorrowland is my favorite! I'd love to visit it someday too!

Don't tempt me, this place was fun to talk about lol. If I can find enough information to talk about for a full length video I just might! In the meantime, the Dan Alexander Dismentia Blog did a great really in depth write up on the history!

Sonny Eclipse is from Yew Nork on Zork, not New York.

You are totally right! I wrote the script and thought to myself "I have been watching Sonny's shows for year, I don't need to double check this, I remember it!" and apparently I was wrong. Guess I need to grab a Caxi Tab and head down to the Yew Nork Lublic Pibrary to do more research next time
