FEW Twin Cam Harley Engines Make it This Big, It's RARE

  • Twin Cam Harley engines very rarely make it to a 117 cubic inch monster, now 117 cubic inches is pretty common on the Milwaukee 8 but not for the Twin Cam engines. There's a couple of reasons for this and one is that any bolt on kit would of been made for the CVO or S models with the Screamin Eagle 110 engine. These were all basically limited production bikes and engines in their own respect. The second reason is that YES a Twin Cam 103 can be a 117, it has the same stroke as the Twin Cam 110 but there is an extra step required on the 103. You have to bore the cases, that right there kept a lot of 103's limited to being converted to 110's. But for those engines that did achieve being a 117 cubic in beast the power was Milwaukee 8 level!

Just did the 117 top end kit from Suburban, Harley 4 1/8 cylinders and Mahle dome pistons, My engine began life as a mild 103. Then got cases bored and we went to 4.060 bore and 113. The 117 just made 131 lb/ft and 139 hp with a 630 DM cam and ported and milled 110 heads. It's at about 11.5 static.

Here my thoughts. I'm not sure about the M8's. The twins are good motors. I've got 88 and it's stock with touring cams. Good enough for me. I'm planning on getting a 14 to 16 bike next year when my budget allows it. I've been on a 103 and that has enough power for me. I'll won't mind doing some up grades like cams and pipes and air cleaner. If I get one with lots of miles then I'll consider doing major upgrades and keep it reliable without compression releases and mild compression for pump gas and a good tune. I care about how loud it is and having a good cam sound and it gets up and go. Don't care about have a very fast bike. Boring cases isn't want I care to do. I enjoy your videos and thanks for making them.

The 117 screaming eagle bolt on kit for the 110 engines are JUNK. I did it and had nothing but problems with them; leaking all the time. I talked to Harley corporate about my problems and just wanted my money back for the kit and they refused! They don’t honor their products . I talked to several shops and they all said the same thing; they are junk and will have leaking problems unless you do crank case work done to make it a true 117! I decided to go back down to the 110 and made changes to the internal parts and tuning. Now I have no problems and runs better then when I had the bolt on 117 kit on. Just a side note, don’t bring your bike to a Harley dealership to get your work done. They are terrible. Go to an independent shop to get better work done and at a cheaper price!

You must’ve had a bad mechanic at the Harley dealership. I had my 117 kit done at a local dealer knowing beforehand who was going to be working on the bike. I had the heads ported and SE cam plate and oil pump. Everything else was from the 117 kit. I let them use the Harley street tuner for the one year warranty and the bike came off the Dyno at 118/124 according to the Dyno sheet. That was two years ago and 30k miles ago. I recently bought a Fuel Moto programmed Power Vision and did three auto tunes . The bike pulls waaay better than with the street tuner. I wont put it on the rollers again as I’m not too keen on them. My seat dyno feels like about 122/128 and for a 83k mile twin cam it’s respectable and good enough for me. 2015 CVO road glide ultra. The takeaway is dumping all dealerships into the same “they suck” category doesn’t really hold true across the board and shouldn’t be posted since there’s a lot of people out there that consider internet posts as gospel. On that note Ive tried three Indy’s near me, actually four and they were all hacks so there’s that. Stripped bolts and drain plugs, burned up BCM and ECM just as a sample. Sure the labor price is better than Harley but the old adage “you get what you pay for “ seems to apply sometimes. At least for me. So now I went back to what I used to do 50 years ago and stop being lazy and doing most of my own work, in my garage, on the floor, according to spec and with all the correct torque values and I feel much better about what condition my bike is in. Sorry you had a bad experience with that kit and the dealership but it doesn’t hold true in every case.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
      Love your videos Gix!

I supposedly had a “master mechanic” working on my bike at Harley! My problems started only 500 miles after the build when I was getting my bike tuned ; leaking. That’s when my nightmare started. I was in the same Harley dealership for all of the repairs after since they did the build. I gave them the benefit of the doubt ! I was in the Harley dealership on an average of 2 times a year with leaking problems. This took place over 5 yrs. I got the feeling they got tired of me and eventually they did not take good care of my bike; scratching things, breaking things, parts put on wrong, etc. I got fed up them,so that is why I went directly to Harley corporate ! That’s when I changed my perception of Harley; not caring about their customer or honoring their products. You should know I have a 2014 CVO and take very good care of my bike and is very proud of it. After this nightmare, that is why I went to independent shops to get my work done and have been much happier with their care and work on my bike. When I do agree with you that you cannot say all dealerships are the same, where I live there are 3 dealerships by me and they all are not good, so I don’t have an option to go to a Harley dealership. When I went back down to the 110( because I already spent thousands of dollars for the build and would have costed me more to go to a true 117)it was cheaper to go down to the 110. I ported my heads, valve job, woods cams, KB forged pistons and other internal part changes, with power vision tuner ( had it dyno tuned). Now finally, it is not leaking and running great for the past 3 years. It is running the best it’s ever had. This is why I will only go to independent shops from now on. I do know there are good Harley dealership around the country, they’re just not around me. Also, how Harley corporate treated me, left a bad taste in my mouth with Harley . I wrote this to let people know there are options to get work done on your bike other than Harley dealerships. I also wanted to let people know, who are thinking about these bolt on kits, they don’t work unless you get crank case work done. This is my truth. Thank you for the replies

I took my 2002 FXDX 88" out to 117". Used an S&S crank, S&S barrels which needed turning down to match std barrel length, Mahle flat tops, S&S 625 easy starts in a later model camplate and oil pump, HQ ported heads, Mikuni 45, S&S IST ignition, Primo Rivera clutch, std exhaust headers with decored std mufflers, I just prefer the look of the original exhaust and it souunds great without being obnoxious. Only SE parts are the adjustable pushrods. I've never had it on a dyno but I would be surprised if it made less than 120hp, no noticeable heat from the engine and I've never bothered to change the jetting that came with the carb and no $1000 tuner to get it to run right.

To build a 88/103 Twincam to 117 would cost more then a new 124/127 motor you can buy from Ultima/S&S/Revzilla/ etc. This of course would only matter if you wanted to keep your original engine.

Agree 1000% Even if you bought a motor to bore out the cases, making the power with that 117 requires a whole lot of specific parts that must be nice to, and play well with one another. Even if that happens, there's no guarantee how long it will last.

The first owner of my CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide Anniversary installed the SE117 kit at 60k miles. When I bought it from the dealer that installed the kit it actually has a blown head gasket that I didn’t catch until I was out of the 1000 mile warranty. I changed the Cometic gasket myself. I also tuned it properly and swapped the mufflers out. It already had the V&H power dual header. I also did an external breather. Swapped the plugs for NGK iridium’s and she’s running great. When the time comes I will probably have Skunkworx build me a 124. Still might upgrade the cam chest and go with a different cam. I’m happy and have almost 81k miles and 21k miles on the kit. Also there are 2 different part numbers. One regular and one race kit. I have the latter. Cheers.

I need a good sit down with a good engine builder, for sure. I'm not seeking maximum power, rather the most reliable power. I called H-D and they informed that long block program production 110 engine (16200108 Twin Cam 110™ - Black*)
they have for 07-17 soft tail models does not include the 07-09 Night Train. They stated that is will not fit in a 07-09 Night Train.
