Weathering Armour - Modelling Demonstration - ScaleACT23 - enhanced video from original live stream

- I was lucky enough to have been asked to do a demonstration on weathering armour models at the Scaleact23 model show. The show is held by the friendly team at ACTSMS and is an annual event. The show is one of my favourite events on the modelling calendar here in Australia. While most of my techniques are designed to be used with armour models, most of them would be applicable to most other model genres. Sci-fi in particular (depending on the subject of course) is a great place to try some of these oil paint and pigment effects.
This demonstration was originally live streamed through the ACTSMS site. I felt I could enhance it with alternative video inlays as well as helping you better understand some of the questions that were being asked on the day.
The quality of the webcam was a little underwhelming however I feel that watching the techniques in real-time and hearing me explain what I am doing and why may be a helpful learning tool.
Thank you to the team at ScaleACT for your hospitality and enthusiasm for the hobby. It is infectious. Can't wait for next year.

A great demo Clayton! I finally got to watch the whole thing after a few interruptions, and you did not disappoint. I have a love - hate relationship with weathering myself, and sometimes I will have a great result when the model is finished, and it will find its place in the display case, and at other times the model ends up in the cupboard of shame until I have the courage to have another go at it. Sometimes it is sadly too late, and it remains in the dark forever with a few other members of the ‘forever in the dark’ tribe. I am gradually getting better at weathering because of watching experienced guys like yourself do it the right way, and I thank you for taking the time to pass your knowledge on. Keep the content coming mate, and cheers for now!
Thanks Gary. Try and be brave with your weathering. Dig one of those models out of the dark and try a few things on it? What have you got to lose?
Always appreciate you joining in the conversation 🙏🍻🍀
Top class Clayton. Great to meet you at scale ACT. Appreciate the time you gave to myself and my mates, all of us novice modellers, to give great feedback and talk about our models. Congratulations on the award for the Hetzer, also loved your Panzer II. We went back to our air b&b and binged workbench hobbies that night. Many thanks- Dan.
Hey Dan. So grateful to get a message like this, and so pleased to have meet so many awesome people. It’s feedback like this that keeps my enthusiasm high to produce this content. Thanks to you mate 🙏🍻🇦🇺❤️
Dear Sir,wanted to let you know I thoroughly enjoyed the tutorial n picked up valuable tips along the video.
I also enjoyed the Hetzer video, truly inspiring.
Tks!
Thanks so much for your kind words. I’m so pleased you are enjoying the content 🙏🍺
Awesome content! As I don’t get to the hobby as often as I would like, the proper order of painting and weathering can make me hesitate to getting beyond the painting stage. A video on the topic of ordering the weathering processes along with the assembly and painting in sub parts, decaling , etc., would be awesome. Different obviously for armour and soft skinned vehicles. Also to mention the chemical implications: sealing in painting to protect paint work, including the decals and pre-gloss under decals, etc. would be a great reference for infrequent modellers to remind and facilitate progress. Cheers and thanks!
Hi Dan. I’d recommend watching some of my full build videos. I try to talk you through the process and highlight why I’m doing what I’m doing. Feel free to ask questions in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them 💪🍺
Great class, thank you….
Glad you enjoyed it!
awesome 👏
Thanks ✌️
Great seeing a good quality version of the stream!Great techniques and tips! Thanks a lot Clayton!
My pleasure! thanks to you 💪🇦🇺
I've left my 1/35 Panzer IV outside on the back porch for over a month, and it still looks crap.
Leave it for another month and see how she looks 😉
