About this video: In this video I cover Japan mask history. I talk about what Japanese mask are called, what do Japanese masks represent, and Japanese mask culture. I also thoroughly go over the meaning of the Japanese Kitsune mask, the Japanese Hannya mask, the Hyottoko mask, the Okame mask (The Japanese mask used in No time to die). I also talk about why Japanese Noh masks are popular and how they are used today. From Japanese mask tattoos to the masks themselves, they all hold a lot of meaning, and I hope this video will help you see the cultural background in each and every one of them.

Hey Everyone, Thank you for checking out the video! I've been super busy lately, but I still plan to keep making videos! :) Having said that, which masks are your favorite? And more importantly, do you think okame is creepy? I sure do :) Anyway I hope you found this video informative and helpful!
My favorite is ah oni mask
@@youngjo5618 those are super cool XD I need to get one for my small collection myself :) Thanks for checking out my video btw :)
Favourite is definitely the Kitsune mask. I like the aesthetic of the fox.
I really like it too XD but if I could afford one, I'd like to get the last one I mentioned in the video XD they look pretty cool in person.
Frr!! Also that one you said was scary, yes that are spooky dooky
Same
i don't know why but i love the Hyottoko mask! It's fun and represents how the Japanese culture is soo diverse and can be really specific haha
Thank you for teaching us the meanings of these masks!! Yours was the first video on the topic i watched, after having a random dream last night about Japanese masks. I feel like I understand why I had the dream more now after learning about them.
The tsuki in kitsunetsuki is conjugated from tsuku (憑く), "to haunt or possess"... so... _literally_ fox-possession. Moon is tsuki, but it uses this kanji 月, and is not interchangeable, though you may hear them used together in puns because of the pronunciation.
That's an awesome fun fact! Thank you so much for sharing it :)
Hannya is just so cool
I agree :) still haven't been able to get one for my own collection, but plan to!
@@DYCEQUIRKthey called oni
That's true, Oni is like the Big category and Hannya is a more specific sub category for this specific mask :)
@@DYCEQUIRK it look so much like one mask(:
My favorite is the Tengu mask plus I made one in my own style I also hanya mask I still need to make one
Hey man, just wanted to say that I loved this video! You presented the information in a fun and engaging way, and I'd love to see more videos from you. Hope everything is going well!
Thank you so much 🥹 I really appreciate your comment. Right now, I'm transitioning to a new position at work and my wife and I are moving to a new apartment in another city. So I haven't been able to make new videos for a few months. I do plan to make more though :) don't worry There will be more probably late August after we've moved and my new job starts :)
I was looking for the meaning of Hanya before getting a tattoo, because I think it's beautiful and interesting. Thank you for the informations!
Of course, glad the information was helpful :)
Hyokotto is a fun mask so No1
Then Kitsune, Hanna and Okame. Would love to see the video of the Tengu mask and maybe Oni masks
Yeah, I'd really like to make one on the tengu and Oni as well :) we'll see what the future holds!
My favorite one was the one you couldnt stop calling creepy!! 😂 My least favorite was the terrifying one you loved so much 😂 The Woman one represents the best things one could hope for. Good fortune, happy couple, protection from bad spirits, and she defends the vulnerable women. ❤ The mask also looked beautiful to me. The fox was is great too, with its help in manifesting dreams and also fertility.
Thank you so much for checking out the video!! Lol also I'm glad you like the Okame mask XD I have it hanging up in my living room and it still creeps me out XD
@@DYCEQUIRK 🤣🤣 I can understand.
I will actually be searching for these masks to hang on my wall as well, and I know they will all probably creep me out a bit, but they do carry good reminders. Your favorite mask reminds to keep emotions in check or else! Lol
I love the kitsune mask
It is really nice looking!
1:44 - So like the Super Bowl advertisements? Lmao.
Lol basically XD the New American way of doing the same thing XD
At 11:06 I thought you were holding a massive bamboo bong 😂
Lol no, I was just using a piece of bamboo as a walking stick XD didn't have a costume for Halloween and our neighbor invited us over for a Halloween party with their kids XD so I put that together real quick.
Thank you for explaining the NOH masks 🥰
Anytime :) I hope in the future I can cover some more. ( Just been busy XD ) thank you for watching the video :) hope it was informative and enjoyable.
Rather informative. Thanks mate 👍
No problem! Thank you for checking out the video! :)
Hannya masks have always been my favorite
seeing this vid reminded me i've been meaning to make one, guess ill go start on that now lol
How is your progress on the mask going :)
thank you for explaining the NOH masks!! i had a school project and this helped a LOT 🙂
I'm so happy this was helpful! Let me know how your project goes! I'd love to hear about it! Is it for elementary school, junior high, high school, college?
I'm literally watching the One Piece scene now, and it makes it so much better now that you explained the meaning behind the mask, Thank you for the lesson. I was originally looking for info for a story I'm writing but the more you know the more you can enjoy I guess
Thank you so much for the comment, and it is definitely so true. The more you understand, some of the background references made by Oda and other authors, the more you can enjoy their creations. Learning more about these masks gave me a new perspective and appreciation for different things in anime. Hopefully I'll be able to make more videos like this one soon. I'd really like to, but you know how life is, so busy XD
Great video, man!
Thanks man :) I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the information Hopefully i can visit Japan one day soon 🤞
Of course! Thank you for checking out the video! And hopefully you can! Now that Covid has been downgraded to a level 5 disease (like the common cold) many matsuri(festivals) have been starting back up, and the Yen is pretty weak at the moment. So depending where you come from, you may be able to get an EXTREMELY good excahnge rate. In my book I mention that the most expensive part of visiting Japan is really the flight ticket, after that your money really goes a long way here with the low cost of living.
This is very interesting, Nice video
Thanks man! I really appreciate the compliment and am glad you liked the video :)
My Kamidana is dedicated to Ame no Uzume so I want to get an Okame mask. But the postage (rip wallet).
Great video and really informative, thanks! :D
How about the Oni and Tengu mask? My fave is Kyuubi Kitsune
When I was originally making this video I really wanted to include them both, but they each had a lot of background and history, I couldn't find a good mask for each yet, and I wanted to get the video out for Halloween 😂 I definitely should try to make a part two and include those.
Cool masks! Happy Thanksgiving to you and Edythe! Miss you and love you! Uncle Al and Aunt Angel
Happy Thanksgiving Uncle Al and and Angel! I hope you guys are doing some fun stuff and thank you so much for watching the video! :)
the mask of Anbu Ninja of naruto
And now you know more about it's origins and meaning :)
6:57 Hata no Kokoro's mask from Touhou Project. One of Kokoro's masks
Thanks for pointing that out :) I haven't played the game, so I had no idea.
When he was talking about the Hannya mask and the screen went black I thought my phone died
Lol I can see that happening. XD I hope it added to the dramatic effect XD btw which was your favorite?
I like the fox mask because of the Anime Demon Slayer
But if im correct 🤔? There are more mask then those 4
A ogre mask ???
Yes, there are a lot of different Japanese masks. I had a few more I wanted to cover, but I wanted to get this video done by Halloween 😁 maybe in the future I'll make a part 2
My personal favorite is the Karura mask
Very interesting favorite. Sorry I didn't include it when I made this video :)
@@DYCEQUIRK it's all good. It's a great, informative video, regardless. I'm a sucker for Japanese masks, and folklore so, this scratched that itch pretty nicely 😂😂
@@joshiditesservellonacles7819 thank you so much, I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. :) Hopefully I'll put out some more videos you may like in the future ;D
There is a Japanese Samuri banner on the Ki-Ni here.
Inari is also generally considered female, a goddess, rather than a god, male.
That's true, although Inari has been represented as both male and female (like one or the other not both at the same time). You are right though that she is primarily female and then when Buddhism lead to a redaction of female deities in Japan. Nowadays I think most people still see her as female, but there are depictions of both.
I really like the hyottoko mask but i dont know where tp buy it, its kinda hard to find stores with japanese masks in my country.
That's completely understandable. XD it can be somewhat difficult to find them in Japan let alone in other parts of the world. If I find one online I'll let you know and add a link to the description on this video :)
hey! i would check ebay, they do have some there if you have that available to you. also, technically, the demon slayer rendition could be a cheap alternative to get something to resemble the mask :)
I love the fox the oni and cat mask because those are the only type I will use to hide my identity 😅
Couldn't you also hide your identity with the other two as well? ❔
🤘🏽
I actually really like the hyottoko mask just because of how silly it looks and is portrayed!
The Hyottoko mask is my wife's favorite for the same reasons XD Not going to lie it's grown on me over time with it hanging on our wall.
I couldn’t help but think of the sword-crafting guy with the wind chimes from “Demon Slayer.” He’s always screaming, chasing, and trying to kill Tanjiro for breaking/losing his swords. He’s a really crazy lunatic with a very short temper, but he knows how to craft beautiful swords.
@@IsaPodrasky He's part of the reason why the hyottoko mask is my wife's favorite :)

what is the big yellow thing called????
The big yellow thing? 🤔 Can you give me a little more detail?
@@DYCEQUIRK the little sumo round guy they are sometimes in red and yellow
What is it thoughm
??
@@Moodster93
Ohhh the Daruma :) they are little statues for setting goals basically :) my little red one is for 2000 subs and the big yellow one is for 10,000.
Basically you fill in one eye make the goal and fill the other eye when you complete the goal. But I also made this short 1 minute video that goes over everything about them :)
czcams.com/video/kfi5mKpdHNs/video.html
The okame one is terrifying
Thank you for agreeing with me XD I don't know why more people don't think so as well XD
First time seeing the Hyottoko Mask in Kimetsu No Yaiba
I love that they used it in the anime :) after researching it and making this video I started noticing it a lot more here in Japan.
Who's your favorite Kimetsu no Yaiba character? :)
@@DYCEQUIRK Inosuke because he's gap moe
so Tails from Sonic is a kitsuné.. 2 tails, can fly
Don't know if he's supposed to be or not XD I don't know much about Sonic Lore, but I think he's more tech savvy than magic savvy 😁
For me, on my point, the ranking is:
1. Ko-omote
2. Kitsune
3. (Neko)
4. Ōkane
5. Hyottoko
6. Hannya
But I based my vue on what they are and what their truly sombolising, and not only about the way they look.
And, black teaths, are juste good looking cosmetics considerations, for women, back on this japanesse histirical area of time. Nothing more, nothing less than cosmetics, for good aparence 😅👌🙄
And it only look a bit wierd exactly from the same problematic of seeing vue angels with eyes and light as the Hannya's one. It's exactly the same concept of decomposition and difraction of the emitional shape pallet, with the differant angel from which you'll see it.
And quite all the Noh masks will works the same on the same principe!👌☺️😊
Awesome ranking! Surprised not to see Hannya higher XD
Also, I plan to eventually make a video about Ohaguro ( お歯黒), the blacked teeth, with it's history and meaning :) I've just been too busy and sick lately XD Thank you for all your insight though. This is a great comment :) hope you're doing well!
😂😂hyottoko mask
Because I remember the sword smith in demons slayer 😂😂 and I think he is a bald man 😂😂😂
I have my Kitsune mask beside me while watching this
That's awesome, where'd you get it from? :)
@@DYCEQUIRK there is a Japanese store in my city and they sell a lot of Japanese things from anime figures to yukata to masks.
@@massivemafuyukinnie That's awesome! Glad you have a place to pick up cool items near you :)
Can someone please tell me how to respectfully wear a kitsune mask? I don’t wanna offend the culture or anything like that
You won't be disrespectful for wearing one, but you may seem a bit unusual if you're wearing it out of the correct setting. Most of the time it's worn in Noh theatre, at Matsuri (festivals), and events where costumes with masks are encouraged. Having said that, wearing one while walking the streets in Tokyo isn't necessarily disrespectful it's just a little strange. (Although many people will wear many slightly strange things as well so... Take that how you will XD )
I hope this provides a little bit of help with your question 😅
@@DYCEQUIRK yes it does! Thank you so much
@@DYCEQUIRK so I actually have another question (two actually-)
Can only women wear kistune masks? I haven’t seen any men wearing them
And can you also wear those kitsune masks that cover only half your face? The ones that cover the upper half of your face but not the bottom of it
Oh and is there any difference between those two masks? (Sorry for so many questions lol)
@@xarvist0 Men can wear them no problem :) and the half mask you're talking about is actually a neko mask (cat mask) many people mix them up with kitsune masks. all of the Noh masks can be worn by men or women with no exclusivity. the masks in the plays just portray specific characters and the traits or back story of those characters, so when wearing them out at matsuri, or different events it's all good. Fun fact, traditionally all the actors in Noh theatre were actually men anyway XD Today, both men and women are actors in the plays. Hope all this helps :)
The first 2 masks guess the anime
1 - hotarubi no mori e
2 - demon slayer (sword making guy)
anbu mask in naruto
Indeed! Many of the Anbu masks resemble Noh theatre masks :) which is your favorite?
One piece???
🥺
Do you watch it? :)
@@DYCEQUIRK YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!
@@DYCEQUIRK who is your favorite character?

God bless bro. great video.
Thanks man :) God Bless!
Many People told me that (as an example) tattooing a Hannya mask is a bad omen, regardless of what Colour. Is it true? Because now that i know the meanings of it, it doesn’t make sense at all.
That is an excellent question! Well as you remember in my video, masks in Noh theater can convey different emotions depending on how the mask is tilted. The Hannya mask if it still did slightly downward can represent sadness if it's tilted more upward or it's looking directly at you it can convey anger. At the same time hannya also can mean wisdom, and many people also like how the mask is a symbol of betrayal or immense pain. Also, today the mask is used as a way to ward off evil and is seen as a symbol of good luck by some. I've even heard it described as a sign of resilience after experiencing a terrible fate. As you can see, the mask is associated with a load of different meetings 😅 so ultimately the meaning can be quite nebulous. It could literally change depending on the person and what they were trying to express. Some websites might say that it means one thing a person that got the tattoo may say another thing. Naturally the best way to find out what meaning they were trying to convey is by asking whoever has the tattoo. Because of the enormous amount of background tied to the mask there could be a huge variety of meanings.
Sorry I couldn't give a more direct answer, but when it comes to the meaning of tattoos it starts becoming more related to the opinion of the person wearing the tattoo I think. Having said that you can use some of the clues like the positioning of the mask and maybe a person's background to try to interpret the tattoo before you ask. :) Oh that helps! Are you thinking about getting a Hannya tattoo?
As far as a bad omen, I don't know much about that, but it is a tattoo of essentially a demon. So I could see how it would be associated with a bad omen XD not to mention in Japan, tattoos are still heavily associated with the Yakuza. ( It's slowly changing and becoming ever so slightly more acceptable, but still very scary to some people )
@@DYCEQUIRK Thank you very much for your reply. You are clearly right, it depends on the Person wearing it. Anyways im not thinking of getting a Hannya Tattoo, i just recently talked with a Friend about a bunch of Japanese Tattoos, and i told him that i really like the Hannya tattoos i see on Socialmedia. He told me that it was really bad to get a Tattoo of a Hannya Mask and it brings bad luck😂. To be honest i never thought of it again till i saw your Video and learned the meaning of the Masks, or least a part of it thanks to you. I definitely have to invest some time and educate my self about these things, since your Video was really fun to watch, and learn a bunch of new Stuff. Thank you and keep the nice Videos coming!!
