Most people that own cars or trucks don't read the factory manual. If you read in your manual under "Towing" or "Carrying Heavy Loads" its states "the use of premium fuel is required for maximum engine output and performance". I have read this not only in the Toyota Manuals over the years, but also the Nissan manuals (my wife has a Frontier Pro4X). If you read further, Toyota and MANY other car and truck manufacturers state in the manual "TOP TIER FUEL RECOMMENDED". This is not a joke, but a standard of fuel quality and detergent package that is usually 5x's that of the basic state and federal requirements. Now another question. How often do you tow? How often are you hauling something heavy in the bed? Fact is folks 90% of people that buy trucks these days are driving them to work and back and to pick up the kids at school. They hardly, if Ever see any real "Truck" use. So if you don't want to use the Premium Fuel for the max towing and hauling capability, then just remember that premium fuel that is Top Tier also has 5x's the cleaning agents on average. The 87 your putting in doesn't have that. So the Prem fuel will keep your engine cleaner. If you don't plan on keeping your vehicle long, and a study done a few years ago by a lender company reflected the average American Family keeps their car 3-4 yrs before getting something else....well, the benefits of the Prem fuel may not show up in that short of time. If you actually plan on being one of those People trying to run your vehicle till the wheels fall off weather that is your Jeep Wrangler Rig, your Taco, or whatever, the use of Prem fuel that is Top Tier will keep your engine clean for the long haul. I use Shell Regular Unleaded 87 octane and add Lucas Oil complete Fuel system Treatment. I also installed a TRD Air Filter.
How is that TRD air filter? Any good?
Knocking is predetonaton, the gas explodes before it's supposed to. Premium gas resists this better than cheap gas, as well as having a better detergent package than the regular gas. It's important in forced air induction cars, but if the engine isn't tuned for it, or says not to use it. I wouldn't run it because the computer will have to adjust the engine timing a lot to make the engine idle properly. You'll just be wasting money. I have a turbo Volvo that the check engine light will come on if you put regular in it. We have a non turbo Volvo that does the opposite.

problem is that many many gas stations fill their premium tanks with regular gas. so much of the time you are paying more for regular gas despite choosing premium.
i actually recommend finding a station that offers 0 ethanol gas and throw in a can of royal purple... only for expensive motorcycles and sports cars.
That’s interesting, but that’s why I don’t search out the cheapest gasoline. We have 0 Ethanol near our home but it cost more.
I run ethanol free in all my stuff. Way better performance.

Filling at half tank with a 38-gallon tank definitely decreases sticker shock at the pump. Regardless of the price of gasoline. LOL
Not sure what state you’re from but premium gas in Southern California is $4.73 a gallon.
East coast. I know California pays a dollar more a gallon than we do but compared to Euro countries and Australia we still have it better. My state is the highest in the Southeast. I just cut out coffees not made at home and saved $150 towards gasoline. I will do anything to keep this Tundra rolling. Thanks for watching.
I don’t use the no name cheap places. I use Shell or Mobil 87 octane.
Interesting topic. I’ve been curious if some places like BJ’s, Sam’s and Costco fuel is price relative to quality. Not necessarily the same topic but a small engine repair mechanic told me always run premium fuel in your mowers too
If you do it all the time it will keep the engine clean and therefore run better and more efficient. Especially if you have been doing it since new. As for Costco or Sam's, I have neither near me so that's a bummer. I do hear their gas is good and a little cheaper.
Always run ethanol petrol in your small engines
