What is Thomas' favorite reverse tanto knife?
This needs to be answered
I second this question
I wanna know
ZT055 👌
We need to know!
No problems with slipjoints. You just have to be careful with all knives locking or non-locking. My workhorse and edc is Victorinox Spartan.
Thats all I carried while in the military.
I've handled that boker slip joint for awhile, albeit a reverse tanto version, and it is a sturdy feeling knife! Really clicks into place. I recommend it if you need a sturdier slip joint
I gotta give it to you DCA, i think your recommendation for the first question was 100% spot on. Not that you arent usually, but i think you were especially right on that one
Svord Peasant was probably worth a mention as a non-locking knife that is effectively a locking knife when being used.
There's advantages to that boker as a work knife. It can be difficult to unlock many lock types with gloves. But a slip joint can be folded with the back of the blade pressed against your leg, with just one hand. I carried a Buck Prince for years for that same reason.
Push button lock?
@Valiforni Not a good thing in most cases as it can shut on you during use.
@@kylethedalek I could agree with that, they're generally robust and easy to release without significantly changing your grip. But they aren't super common, many are autos, and until recently not many good ones were in the price range you'd want for a work knife. But I'd have to disagree with @Valiforni . Liner and frame locks can be difficult, depending on detent strength and relief in the front side to allow access. I'd have to imagine(not a spiderco fan) that the compression lock can be similar. Many crossbars are much firmer when only sliding with one side, as you might when trying to keep a sure grip on the knife. Crossbars often get dust and debris gumming up their spring mechanism in dirty environs. And lock backs types like my old prince are easily closed one handed, but you have to significantly adjust your grip to a rear pinch or reverse grip and keep your fingers out of the way. There's plenty of others that can be debated, but when dirt and gloves and a sure grip are involved a slip joint works exceptionally well. Like DCA more or less said, if you're using the knife as a knife it's unlikely to close on you.
Thanks, DCA, for this episode. Great answers in that Boker large slip joint as well as the Flytanium scales for that "do all" PM2 required. Great value smed-worker in the Hogue Deka. I'm not sure we could ever see Thomas' reflection in that mirror polish (but it is time to see Thomas 'in action' again in another 'garage/auto/shop project' video). I'd like a tanto cleaver with a wheel of chedda, please.
100%, no offense to DCA or Seth but Thomas absolutely slayed that "shop knives" video. I think he needs to do a "yard knives" or "kitchen knives" vid next, I think sending him home with a camera and a subject really let him show some creativity these bench top vids don't allow. It'd definitely be a good change of pace every now and again.
Love my Real Steel Luna slip joint!
This is an excellent series.
I have a mirror polished edge on a D2 CJRB and it didn't take me too long. I used progressive grits of lapping films on it.
I live in the UK and the boker plus is my edc knife it's an awesome slipjoint highly recommend if that's the kind of thing you're looking for
I have every model of Jack Wolf. I love slipjointa. Mainly modern versions but I love old school ones too. I have a absolutely massive slip joint collection
Sweet, thanks for the answer.
In relation to the finger choil it's worth noting that on most traditional slipjoints the extended ricasso performs the same function. This is also a pet peeve I have about the safety of a lot of modern traditionals.
Thank you again DCA👍👍🤠🤠🎯🎯
I like my Civivi Fracture and Kershaw Culpepper barlow. Great value for 2 non-locking slippies.
I don’t like stone washed blades. Also I don’t like blacked out blades either. But I do love a acid etched stone wash blade. Figures two wrongs can make a right.
Thank you a lot DCA! I'm from Italy and the goccia will cost a bit less for me
Hey Thomas, nice job on the compression lock graphic!
I would suggest the böker caracal 42 (not the normal version). Big knife, one handed opening, and it even has a pin to covert it to a „non folding“ knife, if you need even more ruggedness! 😄👍
I prefer the Kansept Bevy but it is on the smaller side. Better materials though
the comical nature of the end video is great to me.
I have carried a slip joint folder since I was 5 years old. I tend to use my knife at least a little bit everyday. 30 years later, I have never cut myself due to the blade closing up on my fingers.
i havent either. if you misuse a tool, bad things can happen. not tools fault.
Are slipjoints safe? A knife isn't yours until it cuts you.
For the record, I've cut myself far more with modern/fidget knives than I ever have with a slipjoint. Typically never get cut when actually using a knife, mostly when playing with them lol. Though my Meatcrafter got me good a few weeks ago when I was trimming a brisket for a BBQ.
Hello David I love the channel you answer the question of mine a long time ago about a folding fillet knife now do they make a folding fish and bird knife also keep up the great work always looking forward to your next video👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'd personally suggest the mini Begleiter in titanium for a classy metallic handle knife that goes with most outfits. M390 blade, too.
General rules I’ve gone by for slip joints is to
1) never back out of a cut (such as through cardboard) so the backwards facing tension does not go the opposite way and snap shut
2) don’t muscle your way through tough items in one cut, several cuts work just as well
3) be mindful of the direction of force if using the tip for piercing tasks
4) grip the tang or kick at the base of the blade as a choil, or use a pinch grip with fingers clear of the blade’s path
My rules are this:
1.) Slipjoints for EDC for fear of being arrested and going to jail
2.) At home, use a locking knife all day, every day.
@@twatmunro slipjoints require actual skill.
This was a fun episode
I love the old style slip joint pattern knives and most do not lock. They do not see a much use as my locking blades.
The Manly Wasp from Bulgaria is a great slip joint. S90v and a 3/4 stop.
Countries which don't allow locking knives tend to have a 3" limit.
Don't some of them require 2 handed opening as well?
@@arrowheadguys7637 My wasp is certainly two hands only.
I have 2 Boker plus xs with broken back springs. Heads up. The XL is heavy. Having said that they are the heaviest duty slip joint on the market.
Mordi, how are the knives now that their backsprings are broken ? Are they still usable, or would you just not recommend these knives at all ? Cheers !
☺️✌️🖖🇬🇧👋
@@raymondwilliams2609 Hi. The ones with the broken backsprings are unusable. I have bought new ones in the hope that they are better. They both failed while routine opening. In my country (IL)
we have some of the same knife laws, otherwise I would just say, move on.
Hey DCA, I was wondering if there are any knives similar to Sebenza that are as easy to disassemble and reassemble. You know any folder that just comes back to perfection after reassembly without having to fiddle with body screws to fix centering. Thank you and love everything you do for the community!
CRKT Field Strip?
Thomas instead of calling it a reverse tanto, I vote we move to dropping the ‘reverse’ part. Then just refer to it as a totan blade. The reversal is implied. Ya know, tan-to normal, to-tan reversed. Enhhh see what I did there? 😌
Not an otnat?
You need to check out Manly knives. They have some pretty good modern slipjoints.
Hey DCA, I have been carrying the CRKT Raikiri for a while and I love it. Being able to have a knife by a designer that has custom level looks at a budget price is awesome. Do you know of any other knives that brings the unattainable knife designs back down to a price us mortals can attain? Maybe $100 max? Thank you for the videos, keep up the great work.
DCA! Can you give a few suggestions for a folder to carry on workouts? Looking for lightweight and without sharp scale edges (chaffing with repetitive motions is the concern). Mostly for running and biking in warm/hot months and with lightweight shorts. Prefer to clip outside of waistband. Nearly never need to use it, so prefer it to be as unnoticeable as possible, but just feel odd without a knife. Thanks for all you do for us knife nerds!
Reverse Tanto Cheese Knife with nail nick and surgical steel? TwoSun TS66! 14C28N & funky Night Morning-designed sheepsfoot-super drop point-reverse tanto blade. Great knife! Works for venison sausage too... lol
Hi David; what are your thoughts on CTS BD1N steel? I have it on my Para 3 LW but you don’t read much about this steel and I haven’t seen anyone besides Spyderco use it. Why is that?
Hey DCA, could you do a quick comparison of the Esee xancudo and the esee agk...which would be a better fixed edc knife?
I'd like to start EDCing a fixed blade, could you make some recommendations, nothing too big, preferably a 2.5-3.5 inch blade, not needing to buy additional hardware to attach it to my belt gets bonus points! Thanks and keep up the great work.
Hi DCA, I'm constantly looking for small bushcrafty knives with a blade length of somewhere between 2.75 and 3.5 inchesand scandi/scandivex or convex grind. I like the Bark River Ultralight Bushcrafter a lot, but it's just not quite 100 % right for me, so I am looking for something a bit different and less expensive. Something along the lines of the Ultralights' elegance, the simplicity of the old Mora 2/0, the versatility of the Benchmade Puukko, the compactness of the Brisa Bobtail and a Casström Woodsman with a slimmer blade thickness. Do you have any recommendations for this very specific niche, or will I have to design my own knife and become totally rich filling this void? I have been looking into the Tops Scandi Trekker, but just cannot justify the price to myself seeing that it's a small scandi with micarta scales and 1095 steel. What's your opinion on the Tops?
Thanks so much for all your great content, always looking forward to new KnifeAQ's
Re: FachtiSan Check out the Manly Wasp or Lionsteel Gitano. I prefer the Manly Wasp. The Spyderco Slipits and Kizer ZipSlip are not bad.
THANK YOU 👣🌲🌲🌲
I would love to see a knifeAQ that looks at the various tools of bushcraft. If DCA and crew went out for an extended bushcrafting weekend with friends, what would be some options of tools they would take with them for cooking, whittling, and camp craft. Appreciate all you do.
Better yet, film the video of DCA and crew out bushcrafting for the weekend.
Amen brother
could you do a video on what styles of knifes are best for which situations or what blade shapes are best for what
Hello DCA! You mentioned mirror polished edges. I like them on some steels, but something like my K390 Spyderco Stretch 2 doesn't like it. I brought it to a 0.1micron polished edge, but had to strop it to tooth up the apex, making in cut much better. While my Knife Center Exclusive CruWear Para3 loves the polished edge. It's like a large scalpel. What are your thoughts on polished vs. toothy edges.
Emerson Knives, what the community thinks about these knives? And You Mr. Andersen? I'm interested on the opinion of people who really use it. In my country they are expensive, so before to pull the trigger I want to collect informations. And I have time for it because in Europe all the models are out of stock.
Thank you very much Knife Center staff for your great work.
Serious question. Are there any options to apply weight relief to a fixed blade full tang, if the tang is hardened? Wondering if I can skeletonize my D2 fixed blade tang, which I suspect is hardened as it is a production knife.
Just guessing that the two knives (Leatherman Free & ZT 0055) in the B-roll footage concerning finishes showing wear were Thomas’ knives.
David and Thomas, could you maybe some time address the issue of serrations ? I've found that, like many people have, not all serrations are the same; some are too long and only snag on materials while others are much more rounded, like Benchmade or Esse, who do excellent serrations. What do you guys think ?
PS: Thomas, what did you do to your finger ? Yes, I noticed your 'bruised' fingernail ! Were you working on that damned truck again ?!?!?
Love your videos, love you guys, too ! ☺️🤗❤️✌️🖖🇬🇧👋
Hey DCA and team! I work in a machine shop where the needs for a knife are endless. I carry a 20CV wharncliffe Deka as my everyday and there aren't enough good things I can say about it. The speed, ease, and safety of deployment along with its shape and high end steel make it just *chef's kiss* a real treat to carry. HOWEVER. There are many occasions where I find myself reaching for disposable razors or utility blades for more delicate tasks. I have purchased several handles from various big box stores to hold said blades but my issue with those is that they just don't provide me with the same feel or enjoyment I get from any typical premium folder that might be featured on your channel. SO! Can you recommend a few knives, or knife handles, that would provide the same functionality of a utility blade, or either hold one, while also satisfying a knife enthusiast like myself? We'll say the budget is $100 - $999.99 so go nuts. Thanks for all the great content!
I'm pretty sure there's a Chavez blade holder.
@@tidge879 I think he's wanting a folder one, not the slide out.
@@arrowheadguys7637 the Chavez is a flipper that looks just like most of his flippers.
@@tidge879 ah I just saw the slide-out version he has and was thinking of that one
It's a clever style blade
Korvid M is a very clearly a "cleaver", which for folding knives are fundamentally a variant of sheepsfoot (or modified, if you will).
I forgot tactile knife bexar is also ti and 2 models w other metal scales.
Bradford knives offers polished finishes.
If you search “bird knife” on eBay, there are a bunch of old multi-bladed slip joints that were made for the bird hunter, with slim blades, sometimes a wire gut hook, and even, in one case, a shotgun choke wrench. Are there any current knives made with a similar feature set? What folding knives would be good at pulling double duty between bird and trout and EDC/office lunch time uses?
QUESTION FOR KNIFAQ:
what are thomas's top 5 reverse tanto knives exluding 940 osborne
Hi Mr Andersen! What would you recommend as a one and done EDC folding knife that isnt as popular as it should be?
Hey DCA, I appreciate your insights on knives. Like a lot of knife nuts, I watch a lot of knife review channels and I’ve noticed that slip joints are largely excluded from discussion. Why do you think this is the case?
Need a Slip Joint with a single blade less than 3 inches that can handle heavy duty - Look no further than the Victorinox Pioneer Solo
How hard is K490 to sharpen in the field? Asking because I'm looking at buying the Lionsteel T6 as my field/survival knife.
Hey DCA. As someone handles a ton of knives on a daily basis, what is the last knife you bought and/or a knife that you have your eye on? Same question posed to Thomas as well
Mr. DCA, some knives with a Scandi grind like the Mora Garberg and Cold Steel FinnHawk also have a micro bevel to give the edge a bit more durability,. How important is it for me to keep that micro bevel and if it is important how the heck do I figure out the angle of that tiny edge when sharpening?
Nice series DCA, I consider that I´m a fairly good sharpening guy, but s35vn is giving me a hard time. Any tips you would share?
Hey DCA, how many inches are enough? For EDC, for food prep, for backpacking, and any other high yield categories
Hey dca ive been looking to buy another cjrb ria. I love my original one but I want a special one. Its gotta be a knife center exclusive but ive noticed you have a bunch to choose from if you had to pick one which one would you recommend and why? Thanks
When will you get the titanium AD20.5 Demkos in M3 or any other more premium steel?!?
Or will you sell Demko Ti scales with the bigger pivot screw?
IMO, reverse tanto only if the front edge is actually sharp. If not, it's just a cleaver or sheep's foot.
Is the spyderco shaman any good for selfe defense? It doesn't look like the tip is naturally pointing down so...
Hey, DCA, Thomas, maybe Seth 👀 and KnifeCenter crew im looking for alternatives for the Benchmade Crooked River for my sister. She's fond of wooden scales with metal bolsters but found the mini and regular crooked river too large and to heavy. And yes I've also tried the Buck 110/112 as well, not her cup of tea. And suggestions? Besides material choice blade steel and lock doesn't really matter since she loves her PM2. I'd say price range something below $350? A bit over or way under is fine too. Thanks!
They always seem to sell out quickly, so I haven't gotten my hands on one yet, but the Finch Model 1934 with wood onlays might be what you want.
G'day, David. I have a Cold Steel SR-1 and a Benchmade Adamas. Is there a Spyderco that matches above mentioned knives features? If not, do you have any suggestions?
Greetings David.
Smock, Canis and maybe the Shaman are some of the beefier bladed Sypdercos I can think of
traditional slipjoints can be really beautiful but the only knife I cut miself with was a slipjoint.
I didn’t even get notifs or recommendation on this video- CZcams must have kicked it aside
Hey DCA. Just wondering why more blade makers do not use Vanax. It seems like an amazing steel. Thanks
What’s going on DCA & Thomas! Let’s have some fun. I’d like to see what your 3 best picks for “pocket jewelry” under the $300 mark would be from you, Seth & yes, also Thomas. I’m very curious of what those results would look like from 3 very different people.
Hey DCA, I love the content! Do you have any insight as to why folding knives never come with "coke shaped handle scales"? We see plenty of contouring nowdays but none (at least to my knowledge) offer coke shape handles.
Pepsi is the knife makers choice.
Case Swell Center Jack is also referred to as Coke Bottle . You might check it out but it’s a small knife.
Hey dca, Why has no one done a little rascals edition blur?
Are button locks less reliable than more traditional locks (like back locks)?
Sandwich knives ? Best knives for sandwiching?
Hey DCA love the show. Is there a Swiss Army knife out there with both the wood saw and the pliers, without resorting to something as big as the Champ. I currently EDC a Huntsman, which I love, but I miss the pliers.
No as far as I know the only current production models with both wood saw and pliers are the Handyman and Champ, both are big chunks of SAK. Also there are a couple of 85mm Delemont models (formerly Wenger) but they're not slim either.
Think about making slipjoints, trying to gauge interest in my design. Multiple different blade styles and Handle materials with coffin shaped handles on the larger side? Still not 100% on blade steel.
I have a question for you. where I work I see quite a few probation officers and 1 stands out. She's a young lady that came in with a Smith and Wesson knife (which a lot of them carry) and after a conversation she has decided to upgrade her knife. The 2 challenges are she's a woman with small hands and she's left handed so she's interested in an ambidextrous closer. I suggested benchmade mini griptillians and bugouts however I wanted to suggest something under $100 due to possibility of loss during apprehensions. What say you?
Im left handed… check out SOG, Hogue, and consider any of the myriad of chinese button locks as well. Kizer Cormorant is one of my faves.
I’d recommend a Spyderco Dragonfly($73), Delica($88), Endela ($92), Endura($95), Chaparral ($110). All are back lock with the thumb hole, can’t go wrong.
A full size stockman does wonders
How about a friction folder, that would meet the non-locking requirement.
Buck 301 stockman
That is a hard working knife
We need a behind the scenes episode please
Mister anderson.... I'm agent smith and my question is what is the worst material to cut through that would dull a knife edge the quickest? Blade steel aside. And normal usage I mean, not cutting through pop cans and stuff .
hey DCA i live in south africa so i dont have alot of knives avalible could you recomend 3 knives under 90 dollars and has a 3.2 inch blade and up .PS love the show man keep up the great work
I really like this channel called Bushradical he’s built a whole cabin and the knife he uses is a Case slipjoint. And by the looks of it that wasn’t the fist.
I’m 64. The only time I’ve had problems with a slip joint is when I made a mistake. Germany. 4 inch max. Can have a lock or two hands opening. But not a lock and one hand opening. I believe gr Britain says no lock
Can you recommend a fixed blade, full tang knife that has the following: 5-6 inch blade , comfortable handle, scandi grind, field maintainable steel with good corrosion resistance. Imagine the Mora garberg SS, just bigger. Any suggestions? Thanks
Maybe Fallkniven?
Can I buy the knife spp2 or shaman … the scales … the lanyard tube.. the back spacer… and will you put them on it.. and then shipped it??? I am not very handy….
DCA, I have convinced my wife to carry a knife regularly (woo hoo!). However, I still haven't found the perfect one for her. She doesn't like complicated locks and isn't looking for fidget factor. She is concerned with safety. Glass breakers are actually a bonus for her. She also values a finger guard or forward finger groove (not choil). Oddly, her favorite knife so far is the Bailout. She also likes the Elementum. I think something like the Kizer Justice would be great if it wasn't so big. Any suggestions?
Ha as I was reading through this I was thinking the Bailout. Great knife, very thin and easy to carry and the M4 blade holds an edge for a good long time.
@@arrowheadguys7637 it's actually the 3V Grivory one, but she would probably like the M4 aluminum one more. I just got a good deal on the other.
@@Ryan_the_tinz Yeah I think she would, the grivory is fine but I've found the aluminum versions of it and the Bugout feel a little more balanced in hand. The aluminum one has the glassbreker tho where the grivory version does not. Thats why I thought you meant the M4 model.
Do you have any recommendations for a tough EDC fixed blade with a 3ish inch blade for around $80-$90?
Ferrum Forge Lackey, 2.75" D2 for $75
Hey DCA and Thomas, can we get another video filmed in Thomas's truck? But this time with both of you. Maybe the "Reverse Tanto Truck Tray Special"?
Hey DCA, as someone who has just started getting into buying good knives that are not just "stainless steel" mystery items ive come to realize just how many brands are out there. If possible could you name some brands and/or examples that are respected for quality in the $200 and below range (stainless a plus)?
Brands like Civivi, Kizer, Kershaw, and CRKT are all ones that even I know and own some knives from but I was looking for some more variety in my collection.
Right around $200 or below I'd recommend:
TRM(Three River Manufacturing) Atom/Neutron
Lionsteel (some of the SR's, Thrill)
Spyderco has some just under $200
Quiet Carry
There's plenty of other good brands, those are some that I've had good experience with.
I'd recommend the Benchmade 940 Osborne, Spyderco Para 2, and the Demko 20.5 in 3V. All are right around the $200 mark and give you a pretty good selection of features between them, and I believe all three are a staple of knife collecting (even though the Demko is new to the game)
Bonus points if they're not from America or China.
Hey DCA, what happens to steels like S30V which aren't premium materials anymore? Will they replace D2 as a budget material?
Hi DCA. I'm looking for a 5th pocket secondary knife.
My primary is my TRM Atom, and I'm looking for a sub-3" blade to have as a backup. I really like Jesper Voxnaes designs, and I really appreciate a good finger choil for my large hands on a small knife.
The Pilar, Isonzo etc are all nice, but haven't quite been what I'm looking for
I used a Spyderco Native for a 5th pocket carry for years. I have extra large hands, and it fits my hand pretty well.
Baby banter, spyderco dragonfly or chaparral, odium, para 3 lw
Check out the Baby Banter by Civivi. A friend has one and it is quite nice. Good steel too!
What does “sprint run” mean in knives. Second time today I’ve heard it? Is that like a site specific custom like that new Elementum button lock in Ti?
It essentially means a specific configuration of a standard knife that will only be made once. -DCA
Slip joints are as safe as any other knife when used properly.
All knives/tools have their limitations. The key to a good craftsman is knowing the limits and working within those limits.
@@Butch_Deezlsteak every one is entitled to their own opinion, but I would like to know why you believe slip joints are any more “dangerous” than a lock blade knife? Serious replies only please.
@@reconty2133there's obviously more potential to use it incorrectly! They're capable of doing less, safely. It's then down to the user to alter or limit what they're doing. So overall, they are less safe
@@noremorse4379 tell that to Felix Emlier. The stuff he does with an SAK will put just about any bushcrafter to shame. All tools have limits and have best ways to use them. I’ve cut myself with knives that had safety’s as much or more than knives without.
I'm looking for a new edc torn between benchmade crooked river, Berg iron wolf, just kinda a big clip point
Both are pretty good lookers with good materials. Comes down to American made/Axis lock or China made/frame lock. If either of those is more appealing to you go with that. If not, get the one that you like the looks of better, because when it boils down to it, thats what really creates satisfaction in a knife purchase.
Personally I like the Crooked River, its on my "to buy" list.
