The one thing I've noticed about any clips of these two around 1955-56 is that Dean hides whatever he's feeling really well but you can tell something's not the same as it used to be because Jerry barely looks at Dean in so many of these clips. The older CCH from 1950-52, they were always sneaking peeks and each other and pulling faces but now Jerry barely gives Dean a glance. So sad.
Two of the most talented men that ever lived, made 17 movies, played every important nightclub, had a radio show and were regular tv hosts during a TEN YEAR long partnership, and on top of all that they went on to be insanely successful solo artists! Here's to two of the greatest men of all time!
Their relationship was "open warfare", according to Angie Dickinson. The split was acrimonious, and Dean had threatened to leave at least once before. I don't understand why people just look at the surface and believe it all. Dean would not allow Jerry's name to be spoken at home in his presence after the split, and he told journalists that if they brought up Lewis, they'd have to leave.
Gosh! only learning of this all TODAY ... had always seen them doing their solo pieces, but first time seeing them together (and thought it was the odd random...)
1:56 Jerry's voice breaks in a way that breaks my heart. It's the sound someone who's trying not to cry. Through the whole song he tries not to look at Dean, he force himself to smile and his eyes expose him too much. You can tell at this point they were already breaking up.
As a child, my American/Italian mother loved Dean. During the summer we spent weeks vacationing at the beach. Dad would join us after work. My fondest childhood memory is after dinner, as the sun was going down on the beach, Mom, Dad, me and my 2 sisters walking along the beach, singing this song. It's a memory that I treasure and will never forget.
Isn't it nice to know that these two actually smoothed things out later in their lives before one or the other was gone? They came along with their gifts right when the world needed them the most. Lightning in a bottle.
No, they didn't really. It was forced by Sinatra, but there was no friendship afterwards. Dean rolled his eyes when Carson asked about their friendship, and sarcastically said oh yeah we're friends.
yeah, im reading "dean and me" too. its really good. i think the reason dean doesn't look sad here is cuz jerry said dean could hide his feelings so much.
Those teams you quoted may have been before Martin and Lewis but no other all male team had the same level of affection and chemistry. If you've actually watched much of their work together you cant help but see how close they were and how well they worked off eachother. Who else openly displayed male affection? They were ahead of their time in that respect. Hope and Crosby only barely tolerated eachother. No need to compare or take anything away from any of these acts. Just enjoy what u like.
Apart they were both extraordinary entertainers, but together they were absolute perfection. It is such a shame that there is nothing like them around now days. Jerry is the last of the grates and when he is gone there will be such a sorrowful void left where a legend used to be.
after my divorce and struggling to get by, I sang this song and taught my then 2 year old this song. we'd dance and sing to this song. I am ok now but this song always brings back memories... sad huh? :)
Idk about that, but the Beatles have the added luxury of being huge when TV was huge ;-;. We hardly get to see anything Martin & Lewis. Their Colgate Comedy Hour stuff was golden, but they were a minor host at the time. I adore the Beatles, but this duo is so much more entertaining to watch.
@@erikawinston3099 Do some research on the duo. You will surely be surprised. I do think that their success in their Era exceeded that of the Beatles, relatively speaking.
So amazing - they were magic together. It is hard to watch this in retrospect - especially after reading Jerry's Dean & Me: A Love Story. His heart was breaking and it shows. But having gone through divorce myself, sometimes it's sadder to stay together.
What a load of absolute nonsense. Jerry took control of the narrative after Sinatra the busybody forced a reconciliation. He wrote the book without Dean's say-so, and it was not a love story, unless you want to talk about Jerry's obsession with Dean, with his attractiveness, his magnetism, the way that women just adored him. Keep in mind - Orson Welles, Bing Crosby, could not stand Lewis, nor could many others.
I often think of them getting their impromptu start at the 500 Club in Atlantic City in 1946. The story never seems to get old. Thrown together by fate, working out routines between shows, Jerry making notes on the bag from his pastrami sandwich. Flying by the seat of their pants, they lit up the place that night; the next night the line outside the club snaked around the block. It seemed and seems like destiny. Martin and Lewis, as a team, just had what it took. They exploded in NYC almost immediately after that, and... you know the rest. So much water under the bridge by this point, it is impossible to watch them here without feeling the history.
Yes so true. They were as big as Elvis and the Beatles after them. Such a close personal relationship. These two really loved and cared about one another
And their relationship was "open warfare" because of Jerry's bullying of Dean. Dean finally left, got angry enough to tell Lewis "you're nothing to me but a FN dollar sign". Lewis gradually pushed Dean to the sidelines in photos and in movies - he was a real rat.
Regardless of what either one of them said or did or felt about the partnership, we would not be talking about either one of them today if they had not found each other. @@susantunbridge4612
Its soooooooo sad they broke up Jerry really liked Dean he was like a big brother to him they were the best comedy team I think Jerry is so cute when he sings this song its got a good tune and beat words there was nothing Like the 1950's !!!!!!!!"
I learned this song in preschool and it has lingered in and out of my mind for many years. Never heard any recording of it until now. Always has lifted my spirits when it pops up in my mind on gloomy days. The nostalgia is real.
Is it just me or can you hear Jerry's voice crack like he's about to cry during a few different lines? I can't watch this without sobbing. The light was totally gone from Jerry's eyes. And when he says, "Sell it, Dino! Sell it!" Dean tries to laugh but we all know what he meant... they were already breaking up and they only did this song to try and convince people they were fine. :( :( :(
Having the DVD's of the Martin & Lewis Colgate Comedy Hours, I've been able to watch this segment over and over again. I am wondering if anyone agrees with me that it sounds as though Jerry's voice cracks at 1:57, as though he's about to break down in the sadness/irony/realization of it all. He definitely rebounds by 2:13. They were great together. I wish I was alive during that time so I could have seen them perform on stage. I bet you it was great!
You're overthinking it. Jerry bullied Dean and was edging him out, out of photographs like a Life cover in which he cut Dean out altogether and that enraged Dean; to getting writers who were under Jerry's control and not favourable to Dean at all. Dean was one of the nicest guys, if not the nicest guy in show business. Jerry abused his trust and the friendship, and Dean finally left
This song is so bittersweet. On one hand, they are so adorable and perform it so well together-- plus it's such a catchy tune! But on the other hand, it always makes me cry because it's so closely associated with the end of their partnership. I think it's tragic that you can see in Jerry's eyes that even he isn't really "into it" at this point, while Dean actually seems to be enjoying himself. I just want to give Jerry a big hug! Anyway, great video, even if I am sobbing my eyes out now. ;)
At one point it seems that Jerry was going to cry, I have the impression that his voice breaks several times. Dean always has the usual amused smile, never an emotion on that face. I feel sick every time I think about how much Jerry has suffered :-(
oh for godsake - Jerry made life miserable for Dean, he was a notorious bully, and not really funny. By the time Dean left, he told Jerry "You're nothing to me but a FN dollar sign!". Dean always looked like he was enjoying himself when singing! They're not "adorable". "Adorable" is for kittens. Jerry was a horrible bully, and turned out to be a rapist, read the interviews in Vanity Fair. But Dean fought back against the unfair way that he was treated. Lewis was just a horrible person.
Yes. I too love watching the reunion and beleive wholeheartedly that the emotion displayed there is genuine. I just know that it wasn't the first. I have watched everything I can on YT and search regularly for new clips. As for comedy teams, I agree there were good teams prior to them but they're my favorite. I guess it just comes down to personal taste and what appeals to the individual. Maybe some of their appeal has to do with their physical appearance as well. Sex appeal goes a long way!
The irony of this song is so present. The boys were just about to break up, they don't look each other in the eye, and they're clearly not having as much fun as they used to. The saddest part of their breakup for me is that Dean had apparently been willing to keep the act together. Dean just wanted to get back to their roots, Jerry kept pushing them into things Dino didn't want to do. If only they were able to talk things out, who knows how long they could've been together? Rest in peace, Dino.
Veggieman87 The thing is I don't think they could have continued for many more years with the same act. Jerry was a very physical comedian, throwing himself all over the stage and obviously he couldn't have kept that up forever. He was almost 30 at this point, and Dean was approaching 40 so clearly they would have had to change their style of comedy as they got older. The question is whether the public would have accepted that, or whether they would have faded into obscurity as a double act.
