To all you DCT knockers out there, I've been riding bikes for 38 years with a clutch, and believe me and I've got one this bike is so much fun off road not worrying about a clutch and not stalling it.....I did the the Honda adventure centre course with the DCT and even the instructors couldn't wait to ride it........
U r old
@@aydingultekin2846 yep, and your point is.......🤷♂️
@@V8pauly888 Interesting to read there is a Honda adventure center course. Will make inquiries with my Dutch dealer to see if that’s also offered here.
@@estrenuo Course.....? instructors.....??? come on guys... get on and ride what is there to learn figure it out... its more fun that way unless you've never ridden a bike before then get a 250
I have had an NC700 DCT for three years, I would love the African Twin in DCT and I can honestly say I will not go back to a manual bike, DCT offers easy control, less to think about and more time to concentrate on the idiot car drivers on mobile phones!
As far as im concerned the Africa twin is the best ADV bike built at this time.
Having ridden the old smaller Twin and the new DCT the DCT is absolutely amazing and it's the way forward for all bikes.. For touring, fire roads, gravel roads and desert tracks it's the best thing I've tried by a mile simply because you're always in the correct gear and you go much much much faster accelerating out of turns especially on loose surfaces... In sand it's just magic because you never lose traction... For real slow trials kinda trails like that small off road thing it really doesn't work well but who rides that anyway and makes an argument based on how a bike rides in an entirely artificial environment.. If you live in a former gravel pit filled with mud and that's all you ride then you're on the wrong bike for one and the DCT is all wrong but for 99.9% of the rest of us it's perfect.
so what good is no stalling if real slow roads are still a problem? what exactly happens there? as for sand, i've heard dct won't switch gears while back wheel is spinning, so it kinda limits your capability to accelerate thru it.
@@ivok9846 So shift it, with your finger?????
Personal opinion does not matter. DCT is something you have to try for yourself and get used to. One ride won't be enough but DCT is definitely something I will open my mind to. No matter how good of a rider you are, in my opinion, for every less thing you have to control there is a new thing you can control.
Being able to change gears with paddles on the bars while standing is a big plus for the DCT. You failed to mention that with the DCT you can't change gears while TC is active, so a side by side test of the Manual and the DCT means the manual will take off and can change gears while you have to back off the DCT to then change up .
IMO there are two awesome advantages to DCT:
1. Not having to shift manually while standing. I always find it a pain in the butt shifting while standing.
2. How cool would it be to put a Left Hand Rear Brake in where the clutch lever would normally go! I know there is a park brake there but there appears to be heaps of room for an LHRB.
One downside I can see is how can you pop the front wheel up to clear logs and things with the DCT? Obviously with a manual it's as simple as popping the clutch. Any thoughts?
DCT...I remember the same bellyaching when ABS was introduced. Some people just want old tech. How about we go back to no suspension for the rear?
Old tech? Nah IDC... but I'm not taking a bike that shortshifts and weighs more.
The first time i took my (manual) bike out, i was climbing a (dirt) hill in 2nd, but it was quite steep and the revs were dropping, so i wanted to shift into 1st, but took too long doing that and the bike redlined, which scared me and resulted in me dumping the clutch, you can imagine what happened after that, so a bike you can't stall and can't redline would be real nice.
+Joe G.P. I'm starting to think that unless you are Chris Birch you will love the DCT in most situations over manual.
You said the FIRST time you took your manual bike out. Geebus, it was the first time !!!!!!! IF you took out the DCT The First time, you might have dumped it. Skills, abilities, little tricks to manipulate the bike you have come with experience. Enjoy the learning and the ride and stop worrying about the equipment being to blame.
I'd like to see one of those beer bellied BMW GS lovers ride their bikes in that slop.
it would be like scene at 1:26 but even more "friendlier" ie they would be on top of each other, literally! lol! these bikes are too heavy for this terrain, and i usually wonder can they go anywhere a car can't...mhm....
Good review, I have the manual at the moment, which I use as my work bike on and off road, I might be tempted by the auto next time, having ridden one recently. It was a bit alien at first but didnt take too long to get the hang of, and still great fun to ride!
No mention of the Manual mode on the DCT!?!?!? Thats the only reason I came to this video. Do-able but just silly to leave it in full auto off road. Like a modern supercar when you hit the track, you use the damn paddle shifters!
DCTs are amazing, best transmission in the world if you ask me.
manuals are still fun sometimes, depends on what you drive/ride and how ^
I want that bike!!!!
I have DCT on NC integra the first few days I needed to get used to it after many years of using a manual transmission, but now I would not never buy engine with manual transmission.
I hope the next will be Africa dct !!!
I have a Honda x-adv 750cc dct.Never go back to manual bike. You have a kickdown too to shiftdown with.Ofcourse You have to get use to it.
His smile says it all.
I would always go to manual. For me is part of the fun. I get the idea of automatic transmission on cars "family cars". That's why you have a sound system on the car, because it's boring as hell to drive the thing!
Bikes are supposed to be challenging and fun ;)
And super bikes use speed shifters with no clutch and super cars use toggle shifting because it is faster.
been riding offroad for 45 years and allways struggled with tall bikes the dct was better for me could use the hand brake as a rear brake on steep downhill sections with both toes down
Sounds good. Part of the fun is having manual. I feel more connected to bike then.
Getting older muscling big bikes through rough terrain takes a lot a clutch work and my hand is good for about five minutes of finite clutch work before it needs a break and I can see where DCT could pay dividends in the long run
If I owned two bikes, I would buy Supersports : Manual and Africa Twin : DCT.
The DCT would be strange to get use to I think, but you got to ask the question. What type of car do most people drive. Would you prefer a manual gear box from an auto in a car.most would say NO.
It is a dual clutch transmission not automatic - automatic transmissions have torque converters.
Does the DCT version also come with a cup holder and autonomous mode so you can read the paper while sipping on some tea?
+ApexIXMR its not a Gold Wing :)
Did you test it?
ApexIXMR ya Tesla is going to launch this summer and even you can cook while riding
DCT is the future I owned the first Crosstourer DCT which was slated but it's a bit like the British bike market in the 1970's I wouldn't ride a bike that didn't have a kick start. It's progress get over it.
EVERYONE Listen! Don't worry which is better, to subjective to answer, do you like to shift? That is the real question, I went for the manual, it's 22lbs lighter, $800 less $, I like to shift, and less to go wrong in the future, however, I think there still both great and was very close to getting the dct, splitting hairs, buy what you want and have fun!
Thanks guys, what tyres are you using on the new bike?
I am lazy enough to go DCT. Possible lack of reliability (namely in the switches and electronics) is holding me back. I did read about several cases of water causing failures..
Im torn up by these two choices. im a weekend trail rider on the scrambler, so im use to shifting gears in muddy terrain. Would the DCT give me more advantage on offroad? Or going manual still the best offroad experience?
Can't stall it? Challenge accepted :)
my DCT stalled once or twice but that only happened because the clutch was gripping harder than the ECU anticipated (cold oil)
+fiah Do you have an Africa Twin or was that on a different Honda? Curious as they say the newer DCT system is considerably revised compared to the older bikes.
+kullsyreholdig01 I have the NC700S with DCT, so yeah the Africa Twin DCT is revised at least twice compared to mine
Cool - I tried the Africa Twin and the VFR1200 back to back, both with DCT, there is noticeable improvement on the Africa Twins setup :) More predictable, easier to get comfortable with the clutch engagement. Think it would be tough/impossible to stall, but then again it was nicely warmed up by the time I got my hands on it!
+kullsyreholdig01 it was only ever an issue when riding in the dead of morning, with a warmed up engine it's always been very smooth!
Automatic gear boxes over the last 5 years have developed enough to be better than most manuals. Its only a matter of time before motorbikes have them too
Or you can put reklusse on the normal one.
Nice riding guys! Taking big bikes like that onto muddy crap ain't easy.
how come? a whole film crew helps lift them after drops...
What is the name of this place? You’re doing, off-road open to public to use?
great review. thanks
That seems like a nice place to play around.
i think bloopers portion of this video would be fun...
Interesting point is that you are used too riding with a clutch therefore you chose it over the DCT. If you spent a year riding the DCT I think you would chose it of the normal bike for the same reasons you have here.
If you want to get the front wheel up to get over an obstacle I wonder how the DCT is to work with.
+Mark Lee
I think you can use the back brake as it is with the husqvarna enduro bikes and their recluse clutch and then twist the throttle to get the front wheel up.
But it will be harder ofc, because u need to be in the right gear and use the right RP/Ms to get the best torque out of the bike.
+Mark Lee you can switch to manual mode then.
+Blackhawk51806 But you can't drop the clutch on DCT to get that lift.
less control would freak me out and it's not like a sequential gearbox is exactly straining to use. also I can't see why that dynamic engine braking system couldn't be applied to the manual version.
+Lizz Le MEME Taka What if you need to put your left foot down but need to change gears at the same time!
Just saying DCT has some advantages. I also prefer the manual but very much like the DCT.
+Daryl Summer good point, spot the road rider 😅
Was that Sibbertoft? I've been offroading there
What tires are they running on those bikes?
would have some fun with my crf 250 there... :)
such an awesome bike, hope it makes it to the states....but like most cool bikes, it won't be sold in the usa
+Julio Collins Or in Brazil... We dont have the new CB500 yet, nor the R6 and tons of cool bikes =\
+Julio Collins Wha? Honda has already committed to bringing both bikes to the USA.
+Julio Collins its already listed as a 2016 model in the US of A. Keep up man. Only thing you miss out on is that White HRC colors. You only get the red one and one more color i cannot remember. Maybe grey or black.
How does it compare with F 800 GS or KTM 1190 R off-road?
+moulin6801 There is Nothing to "compare" about 1190 R.. maybe f800gs..
+moulin6801 The honda is much newer and better than a F800 but the 1190R is a premium bike at a premium price so of course it way better than the honda but the honda is a lot cheaper.
I wonder if the DCT felt heavier at any point than the clutch one??!
Thanks!!
edeq
I wouldn't think so, the difference is very small. Note: I have not ridden any of them.
And you can't go over logs or jump ruts with the dct
Where was that filmed? Your production team really needs to get you some quality mics and also grade the footage in prost production.
You've got some nerve talking about prost production.
@@ronanrogers4127 "prost" means "vulgar" in some languages of this planet
Love the sound of these bikes, and they're quite tempting because they're a genuine off road bike & tourer (ie a real dual purpose). BUT...and it's a big but in my view, they are way overpriced.
I noticed the Oxford control box - am I right to assume that heated grips aren't standard? Here's what I mean about price, in December I bought a brand new, fully equipped KTM 1290 Super Adventure here in Germany for €14,000 ride away (winter price).
Different bikes, I know, but there's no comparison when it comes to kit - the SA kills the Africa Twin, and while I'd rather have the Honda off road, I'd rather have the 1290's massive torque, technology and kit.
There's no way this Honda should cost what it does. For $2-3k less I'd buy one, but not for what they're asking.
dct is better as you can change gears in unpredictable circumstances really fast
come on, why don't you say it - dct sucks off-road and that's it. You can't do any technical stuff with dct.
Off road is where DCT shines. On an adventure bike anyways.
you never been real off-road obviously....
Manual is the way of the past.
i want the white dct. thanks
Hard to unlearn the manual habit..
+Jay B 15 minutes. Maybe less.
I test rode both models - it took 5 minutes to get into the DCT
tie up your left arm and leg....kinda like with autom. car gearbox: was it really that hard?
I wonder how you stall it on a steep hill? Sometimes it is necessary to do so.
+Motolover Hit the kill switch and bike should stay in gear. That is the way DCT works on the NC. It does have to go back into neutral to start again and killing it while in gear can "lock the gears together" so you have to rock it back n forth to get them to free up so it can go into neutral.
On the 4x4 side there are advantages to manual and automatic depending on the situation. Same thing here. People trashed talked automatic 4x4s when they first started really taking hold and yes some different technics had to be discovered but interestingly you see more automatic 4x4s than manuals now days.
the DCT models have a parking brake
+fiah This doesn't help when you want to let the bike go backwards in gear using a clutch while the engine is shut off. Well, I see i need to test ride and try :)
+Motolover I don't understand, why would you want to move the bike in gear while it's off? The only reason I can think of is when doing maintenance and you need to have a cylinder at top dead center, but I bet you can do that with a wrench.
+fiah we do that a lot in dirt bikes when we fail to climb a hill and need to bring the bike back on reverse
I will never accept DCT for an off-road bike and you are limited by DCT in off-road riding.
on steep uphills or steep down hills dct will turn around 180 degrees and go back where you came from way easier - ask me how I know
budget is budget ...king is on in dual world: ktm 990 R best 1190 R . you know that Guy ...
Same course, same bikes and same tyres?
I prefer the D.C.T. Much much easier.
is there a reason they had a subscriber drop, a huge subscriber drop
Sometimes youtube does a sweep of dead unused accounts.
Is that Osama bin laden at 2.32
buy a microphone
Not enough power,1190 eat it for breakfast
Experience has nothing to do with DCT / manual.
For some people it does.
I trust an automatic on a car with a tonne of metal protecting me, but a bike... Never.
manual for skilled rider auto for lazy or intimidated riders ;-)
+therealmrcheese Definitely the DCT for me, then :D
+therealmrcheese Yeah. That's about it. A workable off-road DCT could be a game changer for Honda.
+therealmrcheese
