I realize now that every video I watch from you, I say: This is the bike I need.
He's a salesman, what can you say, a very charismatic one, don't think he lied yet tho
I am the same. I watch a review like this one then look up how much the bike is on bike trader.
he sells bikes for a living lol its habit for him to sell it to you an he is good at it but fair at same time love this guy
Truth
Well he is a salesman
Great bike I have a 2018 DCT and it’s been an absolute blast so far closer to the 70k mark and still going strong haven’t had any issues.. never selling this bike for sure!
Recently bought a used Africa Twin DCT with 1200 miles. Flew to Myrtle Beach picked up bike rode it to tail of the dragon and home to Austin. It’s an amazing bike. I use the downshift button occasionally to pass people with ease. It’s sneaky fast too.
Just bought a new Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT.
I've owned 20+ bikes, and the Africa Twin is BY FAR the sportiest, most capable bike I've ever owned.
This is the bike I'd love to tour Europe on. Comfortable, yet able to handle mountain switchbacks and the more sketchy backroads, plus a little offroad. Time to brush up on my Italian. :)
I saw one in a dealership. Ive never felt shorter.
Haha
Me too big time
Another store experience. At 6’6”, it was a Goldilocks moment.
I'm 6'3 trying find a bike that I don't look/feel too big for. Im intrigued now w this one.
@@nocturnalferalguitarist I just sat on a new one and as I am the same height as you, I'd say height wise its spot on. Please let me know if you get one.
Brilliant bike. I ride in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. This bike does it all.
I never thought about owning an automatic bike until this video. I didn't think that I'd like an automatic 4 wheeler either until I recently bought my wife a Yamaha 450 Kodiak. Now I want one 😂. It's awesome! That engine is amazing. It will climb anything (almost) and crawl down steep hills like nothing I've ever rode. I hardly ever touch a brake. Push button 2/4 wheel and diff lock. Anyway, I love driving on and off the black top. I've spent more time off road lately with my dual sport 250. The Africa Twin is a future goal for sure.
Don't forget the 270 degree firing crank, i have the NC 750X DCT which also has it, interesting sound and feel and efficiency. The twins low COG combined with extra ground clearance makes for leaning easy in corners.
i have a nc700x DCT and love it. Didn't take me but a few rides to get used to not shifting manually.
After watching several of your videos I've come to realize that the only way I'll get to have all those beautiful bikes is to do what you do for a living. Cheers!
Ugh, man, the smooth roar of the Inline Twin. I want that in 1000cc.
Traction control is what sold me on the Super Tenere. I felt myself about to lose it on a grassy slope, then the bike straightened up and went up the slope with no slippage. I like to shift, and yes, I love love love adventure bikes. PS, I like to shift my own gears though; some exercise for my left hand.
The AT has traction control, he had it turned off
I agree with you: remove the clutch, half of the pleasure has gone. I have the Africa Twin CRF 1000 "old style", with manual clutch and shifter, and I'm happily married with her since 2016 (don't tell it to my human wife 😉)
DCT is very good . Try it and forget your prejudice. That’s what I was told. It opened my eyes as to how good the system is.
Obiously you do jot do much off roading on the bike. And when I say off roading I am talking about more than an flat dirt road. This automatic transmission is the reason many don't take the bike seriously. I am think about buying one but obviously without the auto-trans. The new AT 1100 is even better fir what I hear.
@@BikerGirlTraveler that is a bold statement. Obviously you have no idea who I am and what I do . So let’s leave the off roading aside. DCT is a preference and in the 2020 version even better. Try your skills on one and you may be very surprised. Have a good year.
As someone who been on dirtbikes since 9 the idea of no clutch makes my shoulder happy thinking of it.. just like foot problems with a standard car some people's bodies don't agree with that kind of strain over the years.
Glad to see how much you liked this bike. I love my 2019 base/manual. The ONLY PROBLEM I have with it, is picking it up after the inevitable off-road riding. I solve it mainly by just staying away from sketchiness.
I'm not that strong, and if you get the right technique it's actually not horrible to pick up. Great low center of gravity
I like the Africa Twin! I looked at one, but ended up getting a kitted out F800GS for under Six Grand... I Don’t regret buying a BMW, but I’m Glad Honda is fully on the ADV Train!
That is great news that they are making bikes with the auto option. The more riders the better. Thanks again Sean!!!
EPK
I think that if you're physically able to run a manual bike, you absolutely should and would stay away from automatics.
However, there are those that have disabilities and are physically unable to operate a clutch and or shifter. Autos would be good for them.
Thanks for the review. Fun as always! Please bring back the words of wisdom we could all use before riding!
Thanks for the vid! looks a great bike! What jacket it that you are wearing?
Your excitement for just about every bike you get on is infectious (am non rider, soon to be)
Epic transition. Love the videos man
Rode out to the smokies on my AT. 3200 miles round trip. Cherohala Skyway into the tail of the dragon and up and down the Blue Ridge Parkway. I couldn't have riden a better bike for that trip. Comfortable while loaded hauling miles, unload it and go have fun in the mountains!
I just bought a new 2018 AT with the DCT. I agree with everything you said here. I am very short, 5'4" and I was concerned about the height but I find it very easy to handle. It is fast but it is very different than my last bike, a 2009 Road King. I guess that's an understatement. I loved my Harley's but I'm very excited about trying something new.
How the hell do you get your feet on the deck I'm 6ft and moving it around can be challenging
@@boomerhgt I released all of the preload in the rear, but it can still be challenging.
I have a Aprilia 850 Mana GT and do not miss shifting at all. You can manual shift, but I never do. It awesome to just focus on the ride.
i have a non gt. 30,000 miles last year. 100+ miles per day of sf bay area commute. paddle shifting is great.
My second "Bike" is a 650 Bergman. The lack of a clutch is great. It's a great utility/ grocery getter and in general far superior in most respects to my VTX1800 (except for long highway rides). Of course the fact that I lost my lower left leg and shifting is a heel toe operation and a general pain in the ass now. All my cars were manual transmissions but that becomes more difficult to hover a foot over the clutch pedal while in town. Bravo for Hondas DCT! Ive been riding a while everything from 61 Triumph twins to GSXRs and I dont thing I would be missing much with a DCT bike for on road use.
I just adopted one.... Picking it up from dealer on Tuesday, absolutely cannot wait to ride!
I have the 2017 Tricolor (white) awesome machine!
Hows the power on highway?
@@DouEditz you never lack power on the highway with the DCT, it just works and works well at all speeds.
Loves reving high- right in the sweet spot on my MT at 4K going 65 - can cruise 80 and still have plenty of twist left
So it pulls like a 600 sportbike, and can actually do some pretty gnarly shit in the right off road terrain. I’m a motocross guy, but this is a streetbike I could probably live with.
Doesn't pull like a 600 sport bike its 94hp vs 125hp and under 200kg vs 232kg.
Be cool if it had an electronic clutch which could allow you to dump the clutch when you wanted for wheelies and stuff
The newer Africa Twin is the best looking adventure bike atm.
Is this bike good for slower rides like 15mph? As just wondering if this is the right bike for me to take down back roads/country lanes.
i see you're also in Pennsyltucky... they've paved all our roads!!!
slowly but surely saving up for this.
These African Twins and BMW 1200 GS or the new 1250GS dominate the offroads here. Most sold motorcycles in South Africa.
Great bike, excellent camera angle and review. 😄👍
Great video thank you
I never thought much about a auto transmission until I went to Italy and rented and rode a motorscooter for a week. It isn't bad, it doesn't detract from the riding experience at all and you can used your freed up senses to enjoy the scenery a bit more. If it is as reliable as Honda manual transmissions are I would gladly have one. The experience of riding any type of bike is about personal preferences not what any one else thinks about it. I bet this bike is a lot of fun to ride and that's what matters. I'm 65 now and my cruiser weighs 950 lbs and can be a chore to ride (especially at slow speeds) and I've been thinking and looking at lighter bikes.
Sorry for late reply, was it like a moped? If so its a CVT not an automatic that's a whole other story. Dct has gears cvt does not.
I was super impressed with the DCT. 95% sure I am going to get one.
So... Did you get one?
Yeh did you?
Well? The suspense has been killing me.
Wellll…..did ya????
@@americandude3825 Yes, but it had a starting issue. So I returned it. Been without a bike for two years now. Probably would not get another motorcycle again. I have been riding since I was 14, so I think I have done enough riding.
im looking for 1 and so glad too see this video! im gonna buy more then 1 bike, but African is first or 2nd due to this automatic. i Get gout in my left wrist and clutching isnt a option, steering will be rough. but my best friends a Honda and BMW fan and this bike compares to BMW!
Hows the bottom-end torque, compared to something like an MX 450 which is super fast and responsive
Great review, I'd have a guess the Africa is the best all rounder jn the segment. Also though turn the beams off, it's annoying af for passers by 😂
Drove my Honda Rincon, atv, on the crazy West Virginia Hatfield McCoy trail system. If not for automatic tranny, I may have flipped/ gone over mountain edge. Too much crucial millisecond response requirements for dangerous angles/ obstacles. But, did that in my late 50s, made it to 62. Hmm, overdue for a trip up there.
I am currently saving up for the Honda Africa to ride around B.C. and hit up some states in the U.S. I currently ride a 2001 Yamaha FZ1000 (1st Gen.) and low it, but daaaaaang that Honda Africa is so good.
Just bought a new 2017 today and absolutely love it!!!
The DCT is something I thought about for awhile and so glad I pulled the trigger.
Awesome! Enjoy the bike !
Hey srk cycles have you ridden a ktm1290 super adventure r??
I just recently purchased a 2020 KTM 1290 super adventure R stepping up from my 2001 KLr 650 which I had for almost 20 years cam chain just recently broke
I love this ktm it’s super fast with a 1301cc motor it’s super nimble but it’s really heavy I think it’s 531pounds with no luggage.
Love the channel keep up the good work
How do you feather in the clutch and rev the motor for proper low speed stabilization? It's a very legitimate and often needed technique that will be lost with the DCT. I have a Bergamann 650 as one of my bikes and it's easy going but has a very low center of gravity and tiny scooter tires making maneuvering easy at low speeds. The AT is another matter.
You have to ride the rear brake and give it a small amount of throttle to get the same effect. I haven't ridden the dct version yet but everyone I've talked to who has days it doesn't take long for it to feel natural. My only concern is the DCT isn't something I particularly need and it adds cost to the bike and weight
I think one of these is gonna be my future bike tbh. I'm a fan of the sport look but the practically of these are amazing 🤔
whats great even about this bike is that its an automatic which is even more user friendly for begginer riders. I want to pick one of these up in the near future.
I found the DCT brilliant on road but not predictable on the trail an a test ride. Plus sometimes you need that centrifugal mass blip of the throttle for balance
Use the G button it's perfect
Wow give it up for honda...well done i want one's thanks for that video sir.
Looks funny all the controls and with itty bitty handlebar clamps
Looks like the country roads down here in the Shenandoah Valley. Perfect bike for it.
Great bike. So great that i've owned 3 of them, all DCTs.
I agree 100% that is a fantastic bike, Honda did it again
Are these roads in Lancaster ? I live near your old shop and I’m always looking for new roads to check out
I think I've seen a past video with you on a KLR650 before. Compared to the AT: Witch one will you travel around the world in, considering, bad gas, hard to find parts, and simple to repair? Thank you.
The 650 is junk compared to AT. Fact
Good info!
what great road surface you have there. in the UK we need an ADV bike just to go to the shops
I have a 2018 AT. And i love it. You really don't even have to do anything. The bike just sort of automatically does what you want it to.
Im 5`6" - does it come with a ladder?
Me too. I think the seat height is like 37 inches ☹
I'm 5`7" I can just tip toe on Africa Twin
You don’t need one, it has adjustable seat height , adjustable suspension , plus on 5’7 and feels fine to me . You get used to it. If you have a 29 + inseam you should be good .
I am 5'6" , 30" instream, I can put my feet on the ground with the lower seat in the lower position
I’m 5’10” with a 31” inseam and with the seat adjusted it’s still a little too tall as well as it’s a top heavy riding bike and for this year the suspension feels too soft for single track riding. The Ktm 790r is a way better and more adjustable bike and lighter! IMO.
I was looking at one of these bikes because I've had a stroke and limited movement on my left side hand and foot DTC would be ideal thanks for the video
My clutch hand has limited strength the DCT is fabulous
Just ran into a guy on one of these that was maxed out, he said its the best off-road bike hes ever had. Man those things are nice...i gotta get one.
Briefly looked at the manual with no clutch. Honda put a parking brake? Love to see a rear brake where the clutch lever would be for off road.
Great vids, thx
Should add a rear brake lever where the clutch lever would be. Ideal for modulating the rear brake while standing on the pegs going down hill.
Since this is an automatic transmission (DCT), is the maintenance on it more than a standard manual transmission? Thanks.
Todd, it's just the regular oil change, and every 8000 miles changing the DCT filter as well. Not more maintenance than the manual transmission model. I really enjoy this bike. Since it does perfect shifts every time on its own, I'd say there's less wear on the parts than on manual gear box, where shifts can be missed or timed wrong at times.
kutykutyka I appreciate the information. I never thought about it shifting more perfect than we do, but that would be somewhat less wear and tear. I believe Sean said he loved how the bike shifted, as well. Thanks for taking the time to respond!
I've owned 10 motorcycles, some smaller some larger before I purchased my first DCT equipped bike, which was the 2013 Honda NC700x DCT, I really liked it, so I decided to trade in my Yamaha FZ10 for the Africa Twin and now I just enjoy the scenery, never get a cramp in my clutch hand. I do miss the clutch sometimes, but It's an occasional feeling. Maybe one day I'll have both. I've done a test ride on the Zero SR electric bike. Really enjoyed it too but they're very expensive and probably need to improve on the battery, charging, etc. to consider getting one in the next 5 years or so, and you're welcome. If you had any questions, I'd be glad to respond.
kutykutyka You're answering any questions I had by telling me about all your bikes! My current bike is my first bike, so I have some catching up to do. I love to shift; I love the control that the clutch and manual transmission give me, but I could also see myself cruising with an automatic and just "enjoying the scenery." Not sure about the electric bikes, either. I agree on the range, that they'll need to increase miles per charge. I did read about BMW working with gyroscopes (like on the Segways) that will keep the bike balanced at stops; and another project that uses jet thrusters to help push the bike back up if it slips through a turn. There's some very cool technology out there that will make bikes safer and more enjoyable to ride.
So here's a question about the bike how do you think would handle a mixture of fast Highway 80 85 Plus stop traffic lane splitting coming in and out of Boston do you think it's Nimble enough to handle the lane-splitting how's the width of the bike brakes Etc
+gatecitydj yes it would be great for that stuff
be safe man lane splittings illegal in MA
Lane splitting or white lining is ilegal in WA as well
It's surprisingly nimble. No problems filtering with this bike and it will do 110-140 km/h all day long.
I want one. I have no desire to do a wheelie but i like it that its fast and smooth
Me too. Love the idea of an automatic after recently buying my first automatic car (am getting old and can't be bothered with having to change gear).
Christopher Lawes Get the DCT it's awesome super comfy and great fun to ride I don't miss changing gears
Great vid. Gonna get me one
I could tell how smooth it is from here.
@srk Do u have any idea.. If it's possible to have lowered version.. For short ppl..
Yes, there's a lower seat available directly from Honda and also other manufacturers...and there's possibilities to lower the bike itself, as far as I know.
Any vids on the royal Enfield Himalayan? It's not a high speed machine but they say it a good stock attempt at a go anywhere bike
Never knew chrisfix reviewing a bike
Look awesome in control
"I like to get as close to this pole as possible" me, and intellectual: *makes cluck noise with mouth.
Reminds me of my ‘08 Varadero. As we say down here in Brasil, “two joys: one at purchasing, another when you sell it...”
Sold mine last year... man do I miss it. I have five other great bikes, but that A-Twin is one special machine. ...and now they have a new one with all the add-ons; center stand, tank guard, etc. Guess I'll be trading in on one soon. No DTC for me though; clutch and shifter are mandatory. Also, this bike can take regular gas and run just fine.
Hey, Im looking at buying one, how reliable are they?
3.22seconds 0-60mph? That's a lot faster than I would have guessed.
I can guarantee that. I took it for a hour long spin and with a little throttle it took me to 90Mph before I could even say COOL! Very smooth ride. The torque is great, you feel your arms being pulled forward. I had a grin all the way and before I knew it I was singing aloud (sign I'm really enjoying my ride).
I would have thought 4 sec. If your lucky. 93hp and 232kg can go 0-60 in 3.22 other bikes must be a lot faster.
@Phil Myass 5'6" and 159 lbs.
I just bought a 2019 AT 2 weeks ago, standard shifting. First day I rode it 370 miles from the dealership to my house, none of those roads interstate, mostly move twisting roads between Wyoming and Montana. Gorgeous drive and the bike handled like a charm. I opted flour the lower saddle which is 1 inch lower than the standard and quite comfortable. Yes it's a tall bike but experienced riders should have no problems. I DL recommend avoiding sudden stops so not to feel the full weight of the bike, riding it feels extremely light.
@@ridewyoming at only 5'6" how do you ride this bike comfortably? I can't imagine your feet touch the ground in any capacity. I'm 5'11" without riding shoes/boots and I was tip toeing this bike at my Honda dealership.
@@chrisredfield3240 i smoked my buddies 300whp 2015 WRX yesterday to over 100 mph 3 times in a row with my stock 2017 CRF1000L.....ride one but just dont challenge any 1290 KTM's and you will be fine
And you didn't come back for 4 hours. Awesome bike.
it makes sense..its not so bad you will focus and relax
I'm liking the route. Should ride it every so often
Is it standard to ride on the right side of the lane in US? If am not mistaking, that is where the road debris ends up and it is an invitation for a passing car into your lane. Middle in where the oil and fluid patches are.... . Ride on the left side of your lane, own it and ride safe out there.
"i like to get my helmet as close to this pole as possible" ok.
if he even just barely taps it, it could mess hos neck up big time
I don't know who Sean is. I don't know what Srkcycles is. I'm just over here tunneling through Africa Twin videos on CZcams.
But then Sean is leaning into a big looping left hand turn in what he calls an "unknown location". And I'm thinking "around here we call that KH Road". Then he's leaning into another big lefty as he curls around the end of the runway. I'm thinking he's like two turns away from driving past my house.
Then I imagine him doing a wheelie and flippin' the bird when he passes the picture windows at Keller Brothers MS (RIP).
Anyway... cool video. Funny coincidence.
And finally, I want to ride it... you still got it?
I said the same thing about 3 weeks ago... watching his videos and naming roads and saying hey that’s Spooky Nook and 283 and this is Lancaster... 😂 What was the name of the BMW dealer on 501? Before... ???? Keller Brothers bought it... and now it’s all gone... correct?
the airport rout around lititz is awsome, that neighborhood is kind of sketchy with all the deer around it.
Beautiful homes and scenery! I wan’t to move there
You have good taste 😁
I've been looking for this review! Been wanting to ask for the review. Thank-you, greatly appreciated! I'm more of a clutch guy but the idea of DCT has been in my mind.
you will like the DCT, didn't think i would ever get an automatic but so glad i did. I have a nc700x dct.
Beautiful looking bike, I want one!
Sold mine after a month, bought it used. It just feels like this bike doesn't know what it wants to be. It's fun on roads like he's riding (2 lane) but it sucks on the highway and unless you have full off road tires it's way too big and heavy to really crush it in the dirt. Say what you want, I owned one. Bolt upright position and sewing machine exhaust sound don't help.
so instead of covering the clutch your covering that neutral button?
I wish someone made a review of the 2020 model WITHOUT DCT. Almost every single one is for the automatic and I just dont like the idea of not having a clutch for technical offroad sections
Inhale* talks about tank straps *inhales * smacks lips together “you can pop wheelies” *inhales through nose
Jesus I can't stop laughing lmao
"I like to get my helmet as close to this pole as I can"
Did you say no clutch? I don’t know if I wanna get used to riding without a clutch. Also very tall bike. Sat on one at dealership and was on my tip toes, being 6ft tall 🤷♂️
Adjustable everything for people like us :)
Honda isn't new to no clutch because all utility quads from them have no clutch lol but I can see where your coming from.
Honda is missing out. I went to a local Honda dealer here in Los Vegas and loved the Africa Twin. But there is one problem. I am 5'7'' and sitting on a Africa Twin my feet are not even close to the ground. I had this problem with my Triumph Explorer also but the Triumph dealer would work with me and lowered it. I offered to pay the Honda dealer for the lowering Kit they had in their catalog and to pay for installation and removal if it did not lower the bike sufficiently. The General Manager, I was told, said No! All Motorcycle companies are missing out on sales. I have talked to a lot of people in the clubs I ride with, both Street and Adventure riders, and us under tall guy's agree we are being forgotten by the engineers who design motorcycles these days. I am Retired and have been riding street and dirt sense 1962. I can pretty much afford any motorcycle I prefer. I ride all year around. Looks like I will have to stick with my r1200gs the BMW dealer didn't hesitate to put on a lowering kit. So Honda America, Bite me!!
With a low seat and a low chassis those r1200gs bikes are lower than most normal bikes sure its under 800mm seat 765-785mm as a guess even people 5'4" can ride them
2022 and that is a beautiful bike.
0-60mph...3.22 seconds...for an 'Automatic' ( DCT )...that's Fast enough for ME!!...haven't 'Rode' in decades..Getting up there in age..55!...Would you recommend a DCT for 'older-mature' riders? Hope the have a 'lower-Seat' adjustment Too? I'm short..LOL! 5' 7"..( 28 inch inseam ..). cheers!... safe riding!
I'm sadly not a religious man (and even so, I know Jesus was way cool), but I still missed your usual "words of wisdom" bit in this video. Great video anyway though.
Jesus wasn't just cool, he defined good and evil and gave us a way to pay our debt to the universe through his sacrifice. When the physical life ends, your soul will still exist, but where, that is the question.
@@michaelnero4033 I agree he was cool and all but man you are delusional. Even if there was a God out there or an energy I bet it's existence has nothing to do with Christianity in the first place and I'm willing to bet, as laid back as Jesus was he would probably agree lol.
He might end up being a Buddhist.
@@carlosandleon I wouldn't be comfortable betting against souls being eternal, but that choice is yours.
@@michaelnero4033 I wasn't comfortable with knowing Santa didn't exist either but yet here we are. To be honest I think death would feel exactly like the feeling of when before you were born. Do you remember that?
@@carlosandleon Did Santa die to pay for your transgressions, and who will pay the debt you've accumulated in life?
But how does it handle gravel and dirt roads?
I drive a dl1000 with street tires and love it. With sore knees old age and knee pain would consider an automatic bike.
I got an automatic car. If I injured either arm or leg I could still drive home. Maybe even just one hand with cruise control and not stopping suddenly!
Damn. Not only are there multiple advertisement interruptions throughout the video, you actually add to that and put one IN the video.
What good is having a chase cam if he can't keep up with you?
LOVELY!!!
how would you compare this to the Versys 650 (2015+) in terms of street riding/ cornering?
Not a patch on a verseys 650 on street. 17" wheels wider tyres much less fork dive. Probably even for speed. Power too weight is about the same.
Haha. My wife road with me for first time. Our helmets kept banging through the gear shift. She will only ride with an automatic! Looks like the ideal bike 2 up.
