The Fascinating World of Cnidarians

  • The phylum Cnidaria contains such creatures as jellyfish, anemones, siphonophores and corals. Together, they consist of around 13,000 living species - surprisingly simple, yet beautiful organisms. The importance of these cnidarians cannot be understated. Coral reefs are formed of many millions of cnidarians and are home to staggering biodiversity. Jellyfish are important predators in the open ocean food web, but they serve as food for many other species as well. Sea anemones fulfil a similar role but in the shallows, also serving as hiding places for clownfish. Thus, this unique and abundant group of creatures is integral to the function of many marine communities, from the open ocean to coasts and the benthic zone of the deep sea.

I am studying to become a Marine Biologist, and I exclusively study Cnidarians (primarily Corals and Anemones). Thank you so much for creating this magnificent and breathtaking masterpiece! You have created one of the most outstanding and informational channels on this whole platform. There’s almost nowhere you could see this amount of biodiversity in one video about Cnidarians ANYWHERE on the internet. Good job and please continue doing what you do! Human beings need to learn and appreciate these little known organisms as much as we possibly can, they are one of (if not the most) important phylums in the whole entire Ocean. And have been for over 500 million years.

I begin my own Marine Bio studies this September and can’t wait to start, how are your studies going? Cnidarians are some of the most biologically bewildering organisms on Earth, it must feel like you’re studying alien life half the time considering how their anatomies, behaviours and physiologies are unlike those of any other organisms!

@@poopfart3904 Since nobody replied to you yet… yes. In general knowledge in chemistry and biology is always helpful for your start studying biology or marine biology later. Also enjoying traveling and to get to know new places and cultures is an advantage. However you dont need to have the best grades in high school to become a marine biologist. Its more about passion and about spending a lot of time becoming an expert in one specific topic and to collect the scientific data. In my opinion the best possible start in high school would be a gap year in another country and solid interest in natural sciences

So a correction, it's not an immunity the clownfish has. It actually builds up an amount of the toxins and such the anemones emit, into the natural slime coat that all fish have, and the anemone no longer recognizes it as a fish and things it's just part of itself. They can't just go around to any old anemone

I find the life cycle of them so amazing. Like insect metamorphosis, they completely change their appearance and for jellyfish, one polyp turns into multiple medusas. Really makes you question where one animal ends and the next one stands. The same with syphonophores. By the way, have you heard of the jellyfish lake on Palau? It's a lake that is so isolated from other bodies of water that the jellyfish living there have lost their toxicity, so it's harmless for humans to touch them. But reaching the lake is difficult.

The Facinating World of Cnidarians documentary is a great movie to watch for marine and nature lovers. In this production they paid a particular deep atention to the facinating details of the life of these normally unknown beings. The way that the producers conducted the video makes the learning enjoyable. The subaquatics images with all the Cnidarian's beauty was really breathtaking. I dicovered a world much more interesting than I already knew! If you love to be surprised this documentary is an absolutely way to reach this point.

This is awesome! Different kinds of jellyfish take up a large portion of my "favorite animals" list. They're so gorgeous! It's awesome to know that they're also integral to the ocean's communities. The haunting Stygiomedusa, smacks of lil' moon jellies, and stunning Pacific Sea Nettles are just some of my absolute favorites.
    Thanks for posting this!
