    I attended the first Fuels School there when it was moved from Amarillo to Chanute. April 1968.

    I have a brick from White Hall. MSgt Daniel Lawrence, RIP, was able to pick one up for me when he was talking to the crew demolishing it. It's in my den along with other military items from my time at Chanute. I spent over 12 1/2 years there. 6 months as a student, the rest as permanente party. I signed back in to teach in 1981 as an E-3, left in 1993 as an E-7 with 3 degrees, AAS from Community College of the AF, BA in math from Eastern Illinois, and a MSEd from Eastern Illinois University. I did my Master's student work at Parkland Community College.
    I did teach sometimes in White Hall in basic electronics when they had a sudden need. Did it a couple of times and enjoyed it Chanute set the rest of my life for the rest of my career and in educational jobs after retiring. MSgt David R. Smyth, USAF, Ret.

    Sad to see, I attended tech school there for almost 6 months in 1971 in White Hall. My classrooms were in the front of the building adjacent to the radome tower. Spent a lot of time in the base theater on Sundays. I remember the static displays of the B36 and B58 bombers.

      I spent Nov 87 through Mar 88 at Chanute. Did my turbofan jet engine schooling there. I remember bits and pieces of the base, having squadron meetings at the base theater with major Jones mostly. Spent a lot of time playing pool at the airmans club. I don't remember the base however. Does anyone remember the name of the airmans club?

    I attended fuels tech school at Chanute in 1970 wow what a shame, back then we lived in ww2 wooden barracks I don't remember any of the large brick buildings except the headquarters type structures.

      Did you live in the 3354th Student Squadron, right across the street from a Branch Exchange? I was there for Fuels as well, but in '75, and we lived in WW2 wooden barracks as well. The upper floors were off limits in our building because the linoleum was so thin someone on dorm guard put his leg through the floor.

      Dear Sir... The RB-36 was dismantled and moved out to California, I believe in the 1990s by a father and son team. It was then reassembled at Castle AFB and has been on static display ever since. If you Google and toot around on CZcams there should still be some videos of the project. I loved that plane and often marveled at it when I was stationed at Chanute in the 1980s... Was so glad to hear that they saved her, although she is in need of some more TLC out in California.

      @kennixox262 Před 4 měsíci

      @@JungleYT Not sure if they washed them but if the building was abandoned without maintenance and water gets behind the brickwork, that is what can happen. The water dissolves the lime in the mortar and causes the efflorescence and from the video that is what appears to have happened, failed sealant around window openings, the roof and other areas to where water can intrude. The building appeared to be a concrete structure with a brick vaneer.

    • @JungleYT
      @JungleYT Před 4 měsíci

      @@kennixox262 Right... Plus, I bet being occupied with heaters and humans inside also raised the internal temperature of the bricks keeping out moisture? Moisture intrusion from the roof and windows like you said also did not help... I bet if Chanute were not so remote and closer to civilization they possibly could have found a new use for White? At least most of it... I heard the place was haunted? I would not have wanted to have been there at night once it was abandoned 💀
