Communication; a Two Way Street - with Gypsy Vanner Mare Jolene

- Meet Jolene - 16hh of loveable Traditional Gypsy Vanner mare! She was already a riding horse for her family, but following in her father's hoof prints, she has now been trained for driving as well.
In her film, Barry talks about hard to read horses, what he's looking for to show the progress of their learning towards the end of training and the different 'levels' a horse can reach in its driving. He also mentions old Roly and how having his own language with his horse made training other horses easier.

Fiona Alsofiona they really are! They’re fab, i had the privilege of having 2; unfortunately only have the one now due to colic taking my precious mare from me. Vanners are so loyal and loving; and so very hard working, they’ll do anything to please, my boy shows me every single day that he loves me and enjoys what I ask of him. Cannot get a better breed in my opinion.

Getting my hairy boy going this year in harness, he’ll do brilliantly I’m sure, he’s so calm and sensible bless him; nothing phases him and he’s 4 (had him from a foal). Cannot wait for the adventures 😁 have followed you Barry for years and always admired your training techniques. Brilliant!

Your story about the shetland pony reminds me of my grandmother saying during the war she put her riding hack in harness. He would pull a gig, but any farm vehicles were beneath his dignity and he would not try at all to pull them! Characters.
Lovely! I enjoy the ride through the countryside. If I didn't know better, you could be trotting along one of our country roads. I think I even see Queen Anne's Lace growing.

I know one thing...in todays traffic,I feel quite concerned driving horses on the road...but if I was beside you up there getting a chance..I know I’d feel in safe hands with your sheer knowledge....such a old school, skilled driver .

That's the plan, Susan. But it's a big ask. Maybe one day. At the moment we only have Georgie in the relatively early stages of training to be a teaching pony. Sadly could do with being about 3hh bigger!

But ive been riding him more in areas that will mimic or be the roads we will be driving on. If i werent half a world away, would send him to you . I learn with every video you post. Very nice

@@barryhook2 Well I was watching him standing on his back legs happily to reach the willow branches. He is happy to trot and seems not to be in pain. However, because of the arthritis I wouldn't want him worked for miles ect. I was thinking more about someone with experience, knowing what to do about his fear of being harnessed and the bolting. I think the psychological damage that was done when someone fractured his back legs (possibly when trying to break him to drive as a youngster?), is the biggest issue. If he could be got to the stage of doing 2 miles, unshod, around the village a couple of times a week, his life and mine would be immeasurable richer.
