Το Αχίλλειο είναι μία από τις γνωστότερες βασιλικές επαύλεις της Ευρώπης και ίσως το σημαντικότερο αξιοθέατο αρχιτεκτόνημα της Κέρκυρας. Βρίσκεται στον οικισμό Γαστούρι, περίπου 10 χλμ. από την πόλη της Κέρκυρας. Η έπαυλη αυτή σχεδιάστηκε από τους Ιταλούς αρχιτέκτονες Ραφαέλε Καρίττο (Raffaele Caritto) και Αντόνιο Λάνντι (Antonio Landi) με επόπτη τον πρόξενο της Αυστρίας στην Κέρκυρα Αlexander Warssderg στην αρχή, και μετά τον θάνατό του τον βαρώνο Von Bucowitz, σε πομπηιανό ρυθμό και χτίστηκε το 1890 με εξ ολοκλήρου δαπάνη της Αυτοκράτειρας Ελισάβετ της Αυστρίας, η οποία λόγω της ευαίσθητης υγείας της ζήτησε την οικοδόμησή της. Την έπαυλη την αφιέρωσε στον Αχιλλέα, απ’ όπου και το όνομα της, τον περίβολο της οποίας πλούτισε με αγάλματα από την αρχαία ελληνική μυθολογία. Εξ αυτών τα πιο γνωστά έργα είναι οι «Εννέα Μούσες», ορισμένες έργο του Ιταλού γλύπτη Ντομένικο Μοράνι (Domenico Morani και άλλες αγοράστηκαν από την Αυτοκράτειρα από τη Βίλλα Μποργκέζε και ο Αχιλλέας Θνήσκων του Χέρτερ.

Achilleion is a palace built in Corfu for the Empress (German: Kaiserin) Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sisi, after a suggestion by the Austrian consul Alexander von Warsberg. Elisabeth was deeply saddened by the tragic loss of her only son, Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria following the Mayerling incident in 1889, and a year later she had this summer palace built as a refuge. Achilleion is located at Gastouri, a village about ten kilometres south of the city of Corfu, and provides a panoramic view of the city to the north, and the southern part of the island, framed by the Ionian Sea to the east. The architectural style was designed to suggest an ancient palace of mythical Phaeacia. The motif centers on the hero Achilles of Greek mythology, from which the name is derived. Corfu was Elisabeth's favourite vacation destination and she wanted a palace to gratify her admiration for Greece, its language and its culture. The property currently operates as a museum under the management of Hellenic Tourism Development Company, within the Greek National Tourism Organization.
