  • Variance equals the standard deviation squared and it is used to measure the degree of spread in your dataset. It is expressed using this formula where, S = standard deviation, xi is a particular point of the dataset, mew is the mean of the dataset and n is the total amount of points in the dataset.
How to calculate it can be visually represented by considering a family of three children ages 1, 5, and 12 as well as their two parents aged 34 and 36. Let’s plot these ages out in Google Sheets. Then we’ll calculate the mean or average age of this family by summing their ages together and dividing by the total amount of family members which in this case is 5. Since we’re in excel we can do so even simpler by just using the average formula which gets us the answer 17.6. We can then add the mean age as comparison points to our plot.
Now we simply calculate the difference in age between each family member and this average family age. So the youngest child of 1 is 16.6 years younger than the average age of the family while the mother of 36 is 18.4 years older than the average age of the family. We then square that result for each member and add them all together. Finally we divide the result by the amount of family members minus 1, which in this case means 5 family members minus 1 is 4.
In Excel or Google Sheets we can also simply use the “Var”-function and select the data points of interest.
