Day 2 of researching how to do this and I finally came across someone who not only explains clearly how to configure it but shows the the output. Thank you so much for this content!
I have been researching this for so long and stumbled on this about a month ago and it works. I bought a capture card and everything. I need that Mac HDMI to thunderbolt or USB.
Great tutorial. Just a FYI for anyone on Windows, my A7II was not detected when using the front I/O USB ports on my PC. If you know your cable is good, try connecting your USB directly to the motherboard (on the back of your computer).
I really cant beleieve it was this simple, I had been looking for something this relevant ofr the pas couple of weeks. You have saved me frustration and money my friend. Thank you so much!
@@TedShreds I am also looking for a solution for this please come back and comment if you get a solution and I will do the same if I get a break through.
Not that long ago there was a security feature on Mac around using virtual cameras. The gist of the problem is that unless the virtual cam program was signed with a security certificate that Apple recognizes then it would block it. Nothing in the user interface tells you that this is happening, it just doesn't show up. This was fixed in both newer versions of MacOS and Zoom. I ran into this exact same problem when making a CZcams video on how to use your iPhone or IPad as a wireless camera using NDI. In the video I talk through a workaround for the problem at the time but thankfully it's no longer necessary (details around the security stuff are in the video description). czcams.com/video/mo66FDI5nFA/video.html Cool to see how the Sony program works. I saw the a5100 on the list in a screen you showed, so good to know it's possibly an option for the camera I have. I'm currently using the Elgato CamLink 4k which is great but good to know this is another option if needed. Side note: You do a great job on production and flow of your videos, I'm continually impressed with your content. As a (new) fellow creator I've realized how simple it looks and how hard it is to pull off great videos. You're killing it, so keep it up! :-)
Thanks for the info into as to WHY it works in some areas and others it does not David! And appreciate the the compliment, each video I struggle with what necessary information to keep and what to exclude for timing sake, glad it is hitting that happy medium.
i cannot find sony a6000 in the models from imaging edge webcam. can i directly use my a6000 as webcam or need to by external devices? thanks in advance
I would have titled "As a USB Webcam IN A PINCH". I just don't see your audience using this. Is $99 worth better resolution and audio? I hope you were asking that rhetorically ;) I've had cheap HDMI capture cards, the Elgato Camlink like you have (sold to a friend who is totally happy with it), and I now use the Magewell. There remain huge differences. Yes, you can get any capture card to work, but there can be issues with audio lag or resolution. The Magewell is a rock and seems to take anything I throw at it. It's also $300 and there's a reason people keep buying them. I still believe you need to get a PC to do these types of tech videos for us boring viewers who aren't in the Apple Matrix like you ;)
The quality is so much lower than using the Cam Link. We tried this past weekend to ditch the Elgato and run directly from the camera but Sony, inexplicably, requires a USB cable rather than the HDMI.
Thank you for this clear comparison. It is a disappointment that the USB output yields a low quality .... it must be something complicated for cameras as it is not implemented usually
Hi Javier, can i ask what mac version are you on? I am struggle to find the drop down menu in skype, there is no drop down menu apart from Facetime HD camera
Is there nothing that can be done about the Sony a6400 not working with zoom, QuickTime, and Microsoft teams. I want to use it as a webcam but it just shows the imaging edge logo like in your video. Is that standard across the board and just a software issue that can’t be fixed?
It worked with Sony a6300! I could only see it through the software OBS and not in quicktime or final cut or screenflow. So the driver on Mac is a bit faulty but doable. It was hunting focus all the time until I set it to Manuel focus and manual mode. Size is not big so quality loss will happen - nowhere near 4k but as a webcam its cool. Works with zoom too!
will it work with a Silicon M1 Mac mini ? I use my Logitech video camera to do my CZcams videos but wonder if I should get the Sony camera when I upgrade my tv to 4k at the end of the year.
That's interesting. In my test it worked in Zoom, but not in Skype (on a Mac). With OBS and Quicktime I had the same result as in your video. I tested it with the Sony RX100 VII (you can check out the test in my channel, it is the newest video). Did you do something special to get it working in Skype or did it just appear in the dropdown after installing the Sony software?
Why didn't I find this half a year ago when I was trying to solve this first time :o Though super grateful to find it now. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thanks for this. I was scratching my eyes why it's not working until you mentioned only one software can use it at a time. It's a really ugly limitation, as I can't see my fed in Edge and use it as a webcam at the same time, but it's manageable.
I have 2 Sony cameras (a7C and a73), when I plug it individually they work with imaging edge, but when I plug both of them only one works, it’s there a way around it ?
Hey Javier! 👋 I used your other video to set up my video podcast studio and it works amazing! I have my Sony a7 linked to my zoom h6 and Shure mics through the line out. With the Sony Webcam app would I be able to use this configuration to stream live on CZcams??
Great video! with my Sony A7S2 I somehow was still getting only the Imaging logo and that too like a mirror image of it whenI would select the Sony camera in zoom. I would also get an error which said the camera us being used by a PTP software.. anyway nothing worked ..UNTIL!! I changed the USB LUN setting to Single from Multi. Boom!.. I have a beautiful image in zoom now..Hope this helps
When I open up image edge it sees both my A6400s but it can open only one of my choosing not both. So how can I use two A6400 for livestreaming on OBS?
Have done all this process using a Mac, but after my camera displays on Remote, when I go to OBS and select window capture, Sony camera remote is not showing up as an option to select

thanks so much. it was clear and easy to follow. now I just need to get a longer USB cable and pray it is the right kind anyone know what kind of cable is right ? * I know its a mico USB * there are a few kinds of those
try disabling any back up syncing architecture that tends to run in the back, like "Back up and sync from google". Restart the computer, connect camera to imaging edge, This should do the trick.
