  • Everybody wants to jump straight to the fun plants, but you must build a microclimate for them, which takes several years. Start with full sun and canopy trees. Then you need medium sized trees and shrubs. Then you can add the fun stuff. But first you need humidity!

We can see your bowling balls Jay. Your trees are thriving without mulch. Bravo!!!

Thanks! Are you concerned about water evaporating when irrigating during the heat of the day?
I wish that 5 years ago, I had known to plant the hardiest trees on the western side of my yard. Now I recommend to other people to do that and not make the same mistakes I made.
But I have found ways to shade my westernmost facing vulnerable tree.
Fig trees do great in full sun. Mine should have been planted on the west side of the yard rather than the east.

    Hi Jay
Everything in your yard looks fabulous! I’ve seen a previous video or yours recommending to water in the afternoon. I live in Las Vegas and we have a “no watering” restriction during the time that you recommended to water the plants. Any suggestions or other recommendations for watering where states have these type of restrictions

I don't think I "choose" to water in the evening or in the morning. A. there's less evaporation if I'm not watering at high noon, and B. I work during the day away from home. Plus, being in the desert where fresh water is getting scarcer, how can that kind of watering be justified?
