My wifeâs first job she got partially due to her honesty and bluntness.
The interviewer was acting like experience would be an issue & she piped back, âHow am I supposed to get experience when nobody will hire me?â (She had been turned down from a few places prior)
They liked her attitude, though TBH it was a gamble. The i terviewer could just as easily been offended, butâŠit paid off.
I had a business owner tell me that theory is not important. So I said if so, would you want a doctor who didn't study and learned only on the job from their mistakes killing and harming people. Unfortunately this only left him embarrassed and strengthened his position probably because thats how he learned.
I'm screwed
I am with you
I ruin my whole life man. I couldnât have children in my 20s because I couldnât afford. I graduate with a masters and I canât find a job or afford to have children. This sucks
Let's start a homeless outreach service!...for ourselves!
@@merciful.noahide. College. Big scam.
Same dude. I just graduated and he's saying all of these things. I did some of them... but definitely not all of them đ now I'm graduated with what he would call a "less marketable degree" and without any job lined up...
Graduated with a Marketing degree... still unemployed. Graduating into covid has been fucking awful.
Iâm in the same boatâŠnetworking is just far more important these days compared to a just getting degree. Wish I networked more in college but it was especially more difficult with covid.
whatâs your employment situation now that its been 8 months? hoping to hear some good news!
i also just got a marketing degree last month!
Any updates on landing a job, Cody? Recent marketing Grad here also struggling to find a job 2 months after graduation. Over 20 applications sent it and i have 3 years of experience
@@joshzotea2309 yeah I got one last December. Look at companies that sponsor your schoolâs business college. Youâre more likely than not to at least get an interview
Me too. any update?
I love how you said "if you want to work in a plant try an internship in a plant to see if you like it" like you can just get any internship if you fancy one. I applied to every single civil engineering internship at every single career fair during my undergrad and interviewed for many of them but I never once got an internship offer. Now I'm out of college and screwed for getting a job.
Welcome to my world
You know, as insightful as this video is, itâs made me realize that the naivety and idealism of high school students are so taken advantage of that when they become college graduates who try to enter the workforce, the world crushes them. Nobody is properly advising them in the manner that you do so in this video. Gosh, how naive have I been!
Thatâs why I donât like the current education system - âYou can suck on every single thing and rest assured, youâre fine, youâre still a cute little human beingâ. What a nonsense.
Im a psychology student about to graduate. One summer, I was supposed to do a research project and had a medical emergency and had to go home three states away for summer. The next year I was studying abroad. After that, covid barred me from being able to do research. Now all internships are asking for people with specific research histories. It's terrifying.
Can you reach out to one of the professors in your department to see if you can arrange an independent study/research project? Maybe there is a graduate student who would let you work on a project? Did you write a senior thesis on a specific topic? Talk to your professors and see how you might fill this gap. Good luck and don't give up!
@@caligirl4evr1 So I'm doing an independent study, but those are basically meta-analysis style research. Nothing published or with you're name on it. And our program only does senior thesis for undergrads if you're in a research project or in the honors program. I was supposed to qualify for it but had to take a semester off so they wouldn't let me. Im also moving states next month so I can't do research here. So my best bet is internships or assistantships after I move. I'm just not sure how to go about nailing one without previous experience. Any advice on that part? I'll be in a big city, so there should be lots of opportunity. The big question is how to get in the door, you know?
Iâm in the same boat but in the humanities division. Covid really put us behind. I had an internship lined up for last summer and it cancelled because of the pandemic and now I need that experience. Overqualified for jobs in my local market (Kentucky) that ask for HS diploma and underqualified for pretty much everything else. Really sucks. Best I can say is keep trying. I know you donât know me, but I believe in you.
Some universities are doing virtual research. Just ask them.
For any of you watching this video now or videos like it, please donât beat yourself up guys. In THIS day and age even internships require five years experience. No matter what you do, job markets are hopeless for the majority.
Not all, I am currently applying for one that caters to High-school grads even though I am a recent college grad.
the title is getting a job right out of college the advice is for current students or in college.
1. âmake sure you have a marketable degreeâ - I supposedly graduated and have the degree I have
2. âcareer fairâ - hello this is for right after college
LMAO right.
This was a great video! I'm graduating in May with my Business Management degree and I really like what you said about trying to get some experience as early as you can. I work in fast food but worked up to the assistant manager role to juice up my resume a little bit. Not great, but it's something haha
Are you finding it's harder than you expected getting your first job? What are your biggest concerns as an entry level candidate? Leave a comment and let us know!
Dealing with unrealistic requirement.
Luis nice said actually
Finding something Iâm not over or under qualified for, and trying to catch up after losing a year of internship time to the pandemic, and trying to pay loans back on the most common pay rate in my local economy (around $12/hour), and the fact that I still have too wide an interest for what I want to do. Plus I know I have a massive issue with imposter syndrome so I feel undeserving and unqualified for most everything, even restaurants (and Iâve worked restaurants since I turned 16). Really I have a lot of concerns.
I had to work full-time out of high school to help out. Went online for my Degree at 24 and finished by 2011 with a B.S in Psychology. Tried to transition to something in H.R. but my years in customer service seemed to impact me. Went into the Military at 30 to get different experience and pay off student loans and went for my Master's in I/O and Evaluation, Research, and Measurement in Psychology but couldn't get internships after I was 40 credits in and then COVID happened when I graduated in June of 2020. I work as a Career Advisor and am trying to transition to Training and Development or Social Science closer to my field but it's a struggle
My problem has been trying to find my way. I know what I want to do, design supersonic transports (aircraft), but have been struggling to get there. After learning from your stuff, getting to a better school, learning from past failure, and getting with my career services, I feel that I am finally getting closer to achieving my goals.
Your content is so helpful. Thank you so much. I'm glad to know I've been doing all the right things
Your videos have helped me so much. Keep up the great work!
i needed that its been so competitive to just land an interview for the job
Yeah, so having gone through this on a level in tech school, it's pretty accurate. I actually went to employers before school. Networking is almost more powerful than experience itself (I rarely had people care for my education). Got dibs on a very good job that unfortunately was very toxic in a niche market, but that's unrelated. Many technical schools have cheap, short programs for management or general value skills some with like Microsoft certifications and it's a shame how under the radar they are.
I graduated in December 2019 and applied to hundreds and hundreds of jobs, got a few interviews. Finally got an offer but was low balled severely, then found out I canât move into a analyst role in the bank due to gpa requirements. So I left that position rather quickly, unfortunately with nothing lined up. The department was a mess and I just couldnât handle it.
I ready needed that. Iâm a Computer Science major pursuing a 2yr degree and I really do think it fits me
I wish I watched this video when I graduated college in 2019. I majored in business. I had trouble finding jobs and joined the post office. I made regular at the post office in July 2021. I learned that I only want to work in a government job that has a union. I like the seniority system.
Very good, I wish I had seen this many years ago!
Same. If I could go back in time and give myself the same advice :)
@@ALifeAfterLayoff i hope its not too late for me since I just graduated from school but I have employment history tgat has little to no relationwith my career path.
Not a new college grad but been having problems. Sending endless applications and haven't even gotten interviews for anything remotely legit.
Too many employers aren't willing to even look. I'm exhausted and overwhelmed. So many tears and I hurt my hand in a rare fit.
It shouldn't be this hard. This is why I have a complex about things. Nothing seems to help anymore.
I totally can relate with you and it sucks even more when people tell you that you are worthless for not having a job even if you are trying hard.
My recommendation to you is to get with your career services at your school. They will help you to get your resume and paperwork into shape. Don't give up. Try for internships rather than full-fledged positions. Many internships even cater to High-school grads, i.e. people with NO experience. Trust me, you will feel like your school was worth it if you are actually working in some level of your field, rather than something completely unrelated.
I go to my career services at my school since I graduated and they help alumni. My career advisor recommended me to go to their career fairs and meet people at companies. I have no experience and spent my time only focusing on my studies. My career advisor told me to add projects I did during college that are related to the job you want to apply and tailor it to the job description. I do that and get interviews. Start practicing and preparing for your interviews now.
To all those trying to find internships, don't give up.
I stopped looking for engineering-based internships because I thought that they only catered to people with experience (NOT ALL INTERNSHIPS DO). There are plenty of internships that cater to high-school students, i.e. people with NO work experience period. If you are lacking in experience for the advanced internships, go smaller. A lower-level internship with a good company is still an internship and it looks better on your resume than tons of work at retail or fast food, or anything similar that is unrelated to your field.
I have a job. But itâs a meh job. Iâm trying to leave academia and get into industry ASAPâŠbut itâs 1. Hard and 2. Those who want to hire you, they want to pay you 19/hr. Insanely hard.
Thanks for this video. Can you do a video on how to get a position after a long leave due to on the job accident (workers compensation)? Also, could you do another one for those who have been self employed but want to get into the company world? Thank you đœâ„ïžâ„ïžâ„ïž
Recent college graduate and looking for the job. Getting all the responses saying no as all the jobs need the experienced one. My degree is Computer Science.
I understand the frustration. The key is getting some relevant experience to draw from. I'd suggest checking with your school's career services department for entry level roles, even consider applying for internships. Likewise, look for project based/contracting roles to help build your resume to start with. Work on your own project and create a simple website to show it off - the point is you don't want to sit idle waiting for a role. Be proactive. Good luck and keep me posted on your progress.
Bro I am stuck same way as well. I got MS in Information Systems.
Would you recommend getting an internship if youâre a college graduate and switching careers? I just got my degree and have some job experience, but not in my new chosen field.
Nobody wants to hire an economics major. I'm considering going back and studying I.T. very depressing.
You donât need another degree, start applying for IT jobs.
@@simplylethia Ok thank you
itâs soo hard and i want to give up đ
Don't. You'll eventually get into a job. Trust me
still no IT job and iâve applied to over 500+ jobs in the past 6 months.
Unfortunately, we don't have many options other than to keep endlessly trying. It took years out of college before I could get decent work (as in, above minimum wage and actually having a potential future) - then covid hit less than a year in and set me basically back to where I started.
we need to have gov end H1B if they want me to be able to repay my student loans
@@alexcipriani6003 nah, sound like you just need to write better résumés
I've been applying to many jobs and getting interviews but no job offer at all. I thought did well during my interviews and get good feedback that my interview went well. I even tried having a mock interview at my colleges career advisory and they tell me I'm good with my interviews keep practicing. The career advisors at my school tell me just keep trying and applying
My dream job is 9-5 and no getting disturb in the middle of the night
This is so true
I'm getting a BA in psych, I want to HR or people operations, idk what positions I can even get đđ
When I graduated I was already 4 months pregnant. Try to sell a person with a marketable degree but no job history, not much of industry experience and a kid đ now I really want to work but the opportunities are more limitedâŠ
I dont even know why I went to college without first looking at every job opening in that feild. There are maybe 10 in my city of 500k and maybe a couple hundred that are indirectly related
There are many problems with this video. 1. Itâs easy to target big name employers it another story to actually get hired by them. 2. Itâs very hard to locate considering most entry level jobs donât even pay a livable wage. 3. âJust get an internshipâ much easier said than done. In some cases itâs harder to land an internship than actual job.
What if Iâve applied to 50 internships and none of them have hired me? What then?
2:42 3:14 3:28 3:45 4:54 11:49 13:10 Thats good advice!
Hi! I returned to university after working for 5 years, would that help instead of a internship or would that said bad? I didnât get to be selective as a kid
I got a job through my lecturer referal
About to graduate in the summer of 2021 with a supply chain major, can't seem to make it past the second round of interviews or even get a reply until a month after i apply.
Focus on getting some real experience via internships if you can. Those will really help set you apart from the crowd!
Even internships are crazy there days and expect you to have tons of experience there too. Create your own opprtunities and use them to show proof of growth! Even if you have to do volunteer work, you should!
Were you able to find a SC job?
How do businesses look at people in their 40's, that just got their degree?
Pretty much the same as a 22 year old more or less
Nope, they want younger. Donât let on to your age, if possible â€
I graduated with a linguistics BA degree and only that, what should I do? I keep looking for secondary degrees to make my degree more marketable, but really I barely have money to pay rent and if I have 3 part time jobs I have no time or money to get a secondary degree and Iâm in this cycle that leads to a dead end
More education isn't generally a winning strategy...focus instead on getting experience in your field. For example, I interviewed someone with a history degree recently for a software engineering role. He's currently making 200k+. Get the experience instead of worrying about another degree - unless it's absolutely required for your career path.
A lot of careers just simply need any degree, consider writing for a bank.
