This song spent 3 weeks at number one on Billboards hot 100 and outperformed the Beatle's "Let it Be". I grew up watching this show and knew that Shirley Jones did a lot of Musicals most notably "The Music Man" as Marion the Librarian. David Cassidy was Shirley's stepson from her marriage to Jack Cassidy, another well known actor. He went on to have a successful solo career. It's a silly little show but some great music came out of it.

It was a made for television family singing group patterned after the Cowsills. It may have been a fictitious band, but there are two major singers in the group, Shirley Jones, who was a famous singer/actress that appeared in many famous musical movies, and David Cassidy, her stepson, the teenage heartthrob at the time who had many hits on his own. The Partridge Family was a TV series which ran from 1970-1974. The series was about a singing family consisting of five siblings and their mother. Few people know that the idea was based on a real life singing family named The Cowsills. The Cowsills consisted of six siblings and their mother who sang and unlike the Partridge Family, actually played their own instruments. They were quite popular then and appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and many other variety shows of the late 1960's. The Cowsills turned down the offer to appear as the TV family which became The Partridge Family series because the producers wanted to replace the mother's part with a known actress/singer Shirley Jones. Shirley Jones played the mother while her real life stepson David Cassidy played her eldest son who sang lead vocals. As far as The Cowsills, they had a few big hits in the 1960's. " The Rain, the Park & Other Things" (1967) is probably my favorite. Close second for me would be "Hair" (1969) which was used in the rock musical "Hair" a story of a tribe of long haired hippies living a Bohemian lifestyle fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. If you ever get a chance, check out the Cowsills life story. Very sad and tragic. There's a great clip of The Cowsills on The Ed Sullivan Show singing a medley of songs to introduce the family members.

It's that contrast of a latent happy sounding instrument, played darkly that makes it creepy. Like anything. The reasons why children in horror films or clowns tend to really creep people out.

Love this! The Partridge Family was, indeed, a TV show. It was about a widowed mother of five kids who all become a successful singing group. When the show premiered in 1970, the plan was to have the songs performed by studio musicians with some vocals by Shirley Jones, who played the mother and was a successful musical star. But then it was discovered that David Cassidy, who played the oldest son, Keith, could sing. So David joined the studio musicians (and sometimes Shirley) and recorded the songs as The Partridge Family. So when you're listening to Partridge Family songs, it's really David Cassidy and the studio group. For the series, the other actors pretended to play instruments and mouthed the songs as if they were singing. The show was very successful and David Cassidy went on to become the biggest teen heartthrob in history. And the show produced a lot of very successful songs. "I Think I Love You" was probably their biggest hit. And the instrument you were wondering about is a harpsichord.

I agree with the other commenters on their song suggestions. They had many great songs, in fact I can't think of one that I didn't like. But I haven't seen my favorite song of theirs mentioned which is "One Night Stand". It was written by Wes Ferrell and Paul Anka who was a great singer from the sixties. I also recommend songs from David's solo album Cherish such as "Being Together", "We Could Never Be Friends ('Cause We've Been Lovers Too Long)", "Where Is The Morning" and my favorite "I Am A Clown".

OMG! David Cassidy was the awesomesauce back in the day! We were all in love with him! The Partridge Family was a tv family based upon an actual mom and kids group called the Cowsills who had several sizable hits, Indian Lake, The Rain, the Park and Other Things, and they did a great version of Hair, the title song from the musical. Good songs to give a listen to.
I think that David Cassidy and Shirley Jones were the main two singers from the show on the Partridge Family albums, all the rest were studio musicians and session singers.
Actress and singer Shirley Jones was actually David Cassidy’s real life stepmom from the time he was around 6 years old. They really became close when they did the show together. Shirley Jones is a brilliantly talented singer and actress, Broadway star, who was married to David’s father, the actor Jack Cassidy, wonderful actor. They had three sons together, Shaun, Patrick and Ryan. All three are actors, Shaun being the one with probably the most successful singing career. He was also quite the heartthrob in his day, too.
You can still catch this show on Antenna TV, I think. It’s a fun show. The music is truly good, even though David Cassidy would much rather have done harder, darker music and became so at odds with his squeaky clean, boy-next-door character of Keith Partridge.
He was always a rocker at heart. He was vastly underrated and under appreciated.

As people have already said, the Partridge Family (and particularly the lead singer/actor and teen heartthrob David Cassidy) were HUGE in the early 70s! The Partridge Family is loosely based on a 60s family singing group called The Cowsills (their last name). The TV show was about a single mom and her 5 kids who traveled around in a colorful converted school bus and sang gigs. It was wholesome, kinda hokey family-friendly entertainment. I watched it a lot when I was a kid, and my aunt, like so many other young girls at that time, was absolutely smitten by David Cassidy. Actually, though, I must admit that I still like their music today, it's a guilty pleasure. lol! While I kinda like this song (and I think it's their biggest hit), it's not my personal favorite. I prefer other songs like "Echo Valley 2-6809", "I'll Meet You Halfway," "Only a Moment Ago," and "Morning Rider on the Road."
The twangy sound you heard is from an instrument called a harpsichord. It looks like a small piano but uses a plectrum to vibrate the strings by plucking them when you press a key versus using a hammer to vibrate the strings like in a piano. That creates the characteristic twangy sound. They're a very old instrument (Mozart even played one) but not a sound you hear much in music these days other than in old horror music, like the Addams Family that Amber mentioned.
    Cool pick, guys!

It wasn't a real group. All the music was studio created. They lipsynched all their songs on the TV show. There was no band to go on tour with.

@@KetoKassy No, as I mentioned it was a TV show about a fictional musical family. Although most of the TV cast didn't participate in the real music (and it's comical to watch some of them pretend to play), David Cassidy and Shirley Jones did sing actual vocals. (And Cassidy had a great voice.) But the real musicians were "behind the scenes" shall we say. David Cassidy did solo tours singing hits from the show, though.

"I Woke Up in Love This Morning", "Doesn't Somebody Want to be Wanted", "I Can Feel Your Heartbeat", "I'll Meet You Halfway", and "Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque" are some of their hits. You should also react to musical showstoppers and hear Shirley Jones - although she won a best supporting actress award for a dramatic non-singing role, it's musicals where she made her name.

My day is brightened cuz I know I can hear a lot of my favorite tunes at your channel while also seeing you sharing joy. It is highly interesting that your keen hearing of the harpsichord in this one brings recognition of the same from Addams family! I also adore the Addams and I would not have made that connection on my own. It is so true that its not heard often in popular music then or now.

In junior high I often dreamed of moving to Southern California, living in a beautiful house like the Partridges, hanging out at the Taco Hut on Friday nights with Keith and Laurie, and then in real life David Cassidy would realize I was the one he "thought he loved." David had such a beautiful voice, and found first fame at an early and vulnerable age. RIP.

The instrument was a modern harpsichord which is a mid 18th century keyboard instrument. The song features David Cassidy and Shirley Jones, who played his mom on the hit show from the early to mid 1970s. 'I think I Love You,' released Aug. 22 1970. Love you guys keep on truckin'!

You two need to do a few reactions to the Partridge Family TV show. They put out music that got radio play and they sold albums, but it was all encapsulated into a TV sitcom. Each episode would feature some family crisis or love affair with Keith or some road trip troubles about being a family band. Kind of similar to the Monkees Show. Some of the songs were actually pretty great. In fact, this song you are featuring beat out the Beattles for biggest song of 1970. My favorite is "I woke up in love this morning"

This song hit number one before the show even aired. The songs were written and recorded by studio musicians and they would add David Cassidy (Keith Partridge) and Shirley Jones (the mother Shirley) voices on the tracks since they were both really talented singers. Fun fact: David and Shirley were really related. Stepmother and stepson. Shirley Jones was in the Broadway musical Oklahoma and reprised the role for the movie. She was amazing

They didn’t “add” David Cassidy; he recorded the song live along with the other studio musicians. He was right there during the whole process. Shirley’s vocals were dropped in later and more or less buried.

When I was in the 3rd and 4th grades, I was in love with David Cassidy. He actually had a wonderful voice. And this is my favorite song by him. "The Partridge Family" was a TV show and made-for TV group, but David Cassidy and Shirley Jones were definitely the real deal. Shirley Jones (the mother in the show) used to sing in a lot of musicals and movies.

Awesome guys! Such a classic tv show. Their other hits are "I Woke Up In Love This Morning" "Come On Get Happy" "I Can Feel Your Heartbeat" "I'll Meet You Halfway" "Summer Days" and more. Osmond Brothers song suggestions: One Bad Apple, Down By The Lazy River, Crazy Horses, He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, Rocky Top, Love Me For A Reason. They have done some Christmas songs as well. My parents are very familiar with The Osmonds; after the brothers decided to do their own thing, Donnie and Marie (brother and sister) became a duo and did many great hits, then they went solo for a while and then Donnie appeared on the show The Masked Singer as the Peacock.

Part of the genre I always called "Bubblegum". Bubblegum pop was a subgenre of pop music and rock 'n' roll that rose to prominence in the late '60s and early '70s. Bubblegum pop songs hinged on upbeat melodies, simple lyrics with sing-along choruses, and danceable rhythms. The Archies, The Ohio Express, and 1910 Fruit Gum Company were popular bands.

DavidcCassidy was the lead singer, Shirley Jones who played the mother on the show was David Cassidy's step mother at the time, she is an Oscar Winner and was the female lead in musicals such as Oklahoma & The Musi Man. My take on the Partridge Family. It was a TV show that started in 1970. Stars David Cassidy, Shirley Jones, Susan Dey. As a 10 y/o kid then, I couldn't wait for the show to come. Every episode would include a new song. I would hang my microphone from my cassette recorder so I could save the song. The family put together a band and perform in different places, all the while trying to live a family life, (no father in the picture). They did a few albums. Very popular in the early 70s. They even had bubblegum trading card, lunch boxes and the like. The very first musical group in was a fan of. Please play more. No bad songs by them ☺️
