The “I ain’t forgiving you even if you apologize” takes on a bigger meaning if you’ve followed the entire Dragon Ball series. Too many times kid Goku backed down when the bad guy is all “ok I apologize, I won’t hurt anyone anymore” - this Goku isn’t messing around anymore.
Then at the end he forgives him and he's some of his engery. What happen I won't forgive you. Even though we know he's not superman the man does have a pure heart.

@@jsmithers. Not quite. You're thinking of "san" which is a unisex title added to the end of a name in Japanese (kun for males, chan for females, san for unisex), i.e. Daniel-san in the Karate Kid. Son is actually Goku's surname, taken from his grandpa Son Gohan. You're most likely getting confused by that. They could have said "Goku Son" to make it more English, with the surname being stated before the first name, but that would've been both confusing as well as not flown too well.

The Dragon Ball Z dub's speech doesn't fit Gohan's character at all because it is basically telling the Antagonist *I am a Legendary warrior and you have no hope of beating me* which is against Gohan's character because he doesn't believe himself to be special. This is one of the many major flaws of the speech, it doesn't suit a single character in the entire series.

My favorite version will always be the english Kai version, and I'm amazed at how many people changed their minds from the original Funimation dub to the Kai dub here its crazy man
i also think its really good, i like the performance and i like the sound effects afterwards too! corny as it may sound but its anime, nothing wrong with just a sprikle of corny in my show!
The nostalgia factor is strong, the delivery is fantastic, and it's just the right kind of cheese to make a badass action line. All the other interpretations of the scene are fantastic, and they do fit with Goku's overall personality better, but man if the funimation dub isn't permanently emblazoned in my brain as such a badass one liner. If anything is weak, it's the rest of Goku's "world of cardboard" speech around the final line where the "superman, but japanese" is a little much in retrospect and in knowing the character better than I did when it first aired. But, dor when they show came out, and me barely knowing anime at the time, I think the lines rewrite was actually perfect for western audiences at the time. Maybe it was dumbing down the character a little, but Son Goku was not a name that carried as much heft even within what the Toonami crowd at the time had seen of the character. Again, they're all great, but this is a line where I'm more than happy to acknowledge my nostalgia as a factor in it being my favorite, where as the others are versions I really appreciate now that I've seen dragon ball and know about journey to the west and just in general know Goku better.
“Ally to good, Nightmare to you” holds a special place in my heart. On the other hand him embracing the legendary name of super saiyan is huge respect to vegeta and the saiyan race, he becomes the embodiment of vengeance for a race that was slaughtered.
Which in the original dub made NO SENSE at all. Hell even in this new version. Goku could care less if he were a saiyan or human. He's there to kick ass.
I think in the original series, super saiyan is the embodiment of rage and doesn't stand for justice. At times even quite the opposite. For example, Goku always had to use spirit bomb in his base stage. But I'm aware that that premise might have been modified especially with super now. Also Goku is not an eloquent speaker, so the english dub makes no sense to me, with metaphors like 'your evil deeds is a noose'. But it might be my prejudice since I watched the Japanese dub and read the manga first lol.

During this fight with Freeza he literally accepts his Saiyan background before he uses the Genki Dama on Freeza. He could've only become a Super Saiyan after fully embracing his Saiyan side.
Which makes little sense cause Goku was trained by Roshi who told him to protect any in the universe who need it. The original was closer to dragon ball. Which I think is better than being closer to the manga, which Kai is sure, but it absolutely perverts Gokus ethics and morals, going as far as to pretend he never had any. Well that’s bullshit. Cause Goku fights to protect those who cannot fight for themselves. He does not just fight because he likes to. That is Vegeta.

Funnily enough, my favourite version of this scene is from one of the games: Burst Limit. A huge departure from the original dub before Kai came out. Schemmels delivery really helped too "You can destroy a planet, but it seems you can't even destroy a single man" "What...!? What are you?!" "You already know, don't you? The way he say's it is quite epic, I'd call it more generic 90s/2000s superhero dialogue than cheesy, well, maybe a little by today's standards, but the build up to that point makes it work for me, but obviously the new craze today is everything having to be exactly like the source material, so the heroic Goku thing is getting a lot of backlash in recent years, but I'll always respect that version of Goku since he was far more inspiring and is the Goku that Toei preferred which is why we get the heroic Goku in the original dragonball and in GT, wile I'd say half of Toriyama's selfish Goku is in Z, and then we get the full version of Toriyama's selfish and dumb Goku in DBS.

Just for the fact that Goku in the manga says "Don't you already know?", puts the scene above the rest IMO. It's subtle, but it just adds to the fact that Goku has Frieza beaten both physically AND mentally.

Sean screaming Son Goku in English gives me chills. I genuinely feel like "Son" is a vital part of Gokus character, regardless if it has any plot relevance. The fact he used it specifically for Gokus biggest moment is history is legendary and satisfying for all english viewers who've wanted to hear the name in english.
Idk, I like to think "Son" can also be the very star "Sun" Like the sun, the very hot ball of gas in space. From a distance, it can help shine the darkness, help life forms to develop and grow even good health. However too long, You will be sun burned, blinded, or illness (battle Goku) Now if you're closer everything goes bat sh#t Insane.

The abridged version did it best... mainly due to setting it up with the running gag of Frieza getting increasingly annoyed at Vegeta's super saiyan speeches. And cutting the third one short by finishing off Vegeta. So when he tries to do the same thing to Goku; and doesn't even scratch him; it's a pretty badass moment. Also, the speech itself is hilarious.
The Falconer score is just amazing and iconic. But I love all the versions for different reasons. But the one I grew up with “the ally to good” version with the music? Will always be special in my heart.

As someone who grew up watching the original English dub and love faulconer’s music, I’m not gonna let nostalgia get in the way because honestly, I think Kai did the line so well. Goku is never meant to be a heroic character, sure he’s done some feats, but he never really considers himself as an actual hero. You don’t really see him being concern about the people, he mainly shows concern around those that are close to him, such as his friends and family. The only reason he’s concerned about earth is because that’s where his friends live. In Kai, the speech works because he’s literally instilling fear into frieza after explaining who he is and where he comes from (in terms of where he always lived), sure you could argue otherwise, but Kai is faithful to the original script and the point of goku in that form is to demonstrate his rage after witnessing the death of his friend (and at the time before he would even make it his natural form, he was always in rage), his rage is accurate to the point where he even lashes out at gohan (despite being his youngest son) while trying to control himself to telling him to head back home with piccolo. I’m sure most of you know as to how the “son goku” line happened, but incase theres someone who doesn’t know, long story short, it was Sean’s idea who wanted to say the line so badly to the point where Chris ayres (or Sabat, idk which one) had to ask the higher ups if it’s ok to include it, which is why you’ll sometimes see that specific name appear in games or even in the movie/anime. Overall, faulconer’s music doesn’t flow well with Kai, and the thing is, faulconer probably won’t work with funimation again due to a lawsuit between him and funimation (I’m surprised most people don’t know nor bring this up), which led to the two eventually parting ways (and funimation now uses the actual original music without having to use their own or hiring someone to compose music), meaning the chances of him returning is 0. Overall, watching Kai is probably better since it doesn’t have that much filler and it’s an easier way for you to catch up on the story if you’re new to dragon ball. If you’re still fond of the original dub, it’s fine, but I wanted to give my take as to why I prefer kai in the first place.
Really insightful explanation, hit the nail on the head with everything you said! I'm also surprised a lot of people don't know about the Faulconer legal troubles as well. I said on an earlier comment somewhere that one of the biggest issues lies in the fact that the English adaptations of the series skipped it's first 10 arcs and introduced the series on it's 11th instead lol. (Emperor Pilaf - Piccolo Jr. sagas not adapted in English until 2003.) So most people growing up were introduced to Goku as the hero who did great things already, but we didn't know what exactly he did or what traits made him who he was as a character back in 1996. Plus, we weren't going on the internet as kids to find out what happened before the Saiyan saga to understand the cast like that. They could have changed everyone's characters and it wouldn't have made a difference to us then. So when the english dubbed line debuted in this episode, it sounded great mostly to those in the west. I also remember that during the same time, this show was competing against Superman and Batman animated series as well. To me, the line fit the time and the circumstance. It's very nostalgic and a footnote in the development of what built DBZ into what it later became here in the west.

I personally like Goku's pure fury of the original/Kai version, and Goku screaming his full name makes it feel more personal. And that's exactly what the fight became: personal. It wasn't personal before this, it was another challenge in Goku's mind; it wasn't personal when Vegeta died, while Goku had respect for Vegeta, he was still technically his enemy; but when Freeza unnecessarily killed Krillin, that's when Goku stopped looking at fighting as simply being a test of strength, and instead viewed it as a fight for his fallen best friend. It was finally personal, and Goku became the scariest monster imaginable: a monster with a pure heart.
You have no idea how I needed to get my Dragon Ball Z fix by Watching the Spanish version on Telemundo I think. And this was at the time when the English dub stopped for a bit. So, I watched it for the changes and hoping it would get past what I saw.
And then Trunks was the one who killed Freeza, until Super where he did kill himself. Then time shenanigans happened and Goku finally killed Freeza. :p
@@fanaferrari1 when reading something meant to have impact the feeling can be lost very easily as it all depends on the reader. So the manga is not as reliable as a tv series. Similarly if you can't speak Japanese and don't know how they speak, reading the subtitles in the Japanese dub is has the same issue as the manga. DBZ completely changed the speech, and had sub par voice acting. Kai however had good voice actors, was in English, and stayed faithful to the manga.
I'm in 80s baby so I grew up on dragon Ball z but I only know the 1999 version of that speech I just recently had the same debate about this it's actually surprising to find out that the version that we heard is actually the original and not the version from 1999 but I find this to be very enlightening to know that there is three different versions of that same speech
i like that the original japanese language version is the way it is. schemmel's goku was cast to play a heroic interpretation of the character and thus i think his voice has a beaming quality to it that i think makes the original "ally to good" speech work better than the kai rewrite. ultimately they both work for the performer they were written for
I'm bias to the 1999 version and I still like it. I have never read the manga. But now I like the manga dialogue better. I'll explain why. Here's the quote. Goku: "Don't you already know? I'm a saiyan who came from Earth to defeat you. A warrior of legend awakened by anger but possessing a calm heart. I am a super saiyan, Son Goku." Both Goku and Freeza are flat character arcs. Goku's postive flat arc is about how the world responds to the truth he believes. That truth is Progression Through Struggle. Freeza's negative flat arc is about how the world responds to the lie he believes. That lie is Nobody Can Progress To Match Or Surpass Me. Robert McKee: "A protagonist, and his story, can only be as intellectually fascinating and emotionally compelling as the forces of antagonism make them." The ideologies in conflict are intellectually timeless. Goku champions Nurture and Freeza champions Nature. If nurture > nature then Progression Through Struggle = True. If nurture < nature then Progression Through Struggle = False. Goku champions Meritocracy and Freeza champions Divine Right. If Nobody Can Progress To Surpass Freeza then Divine Right = True. If somebody can then Divine Right = False. Goku champions Mercy and Freeza champions Cruelty. If people can learn from their mistakes (progress through struggle) then Mercy > Cruelty. If people can't learn from their mistakes then Mercy < Cruelty. "A warrior of legend awakened by anger but possessing a calm heart." So to relate all of this to Goku's speech, this line portrays these timeless debates better. Unlike in the 1999 version "Ally to good nightmare to you," Goku isn't expressing certainty in his philosophy. He is just re-iterating his philosophy that violence is a last resort. He is calm by nature and only violent by necessity. Because the truth is that both Goku and Freeza's philosophies are equally resilient. They're different but valid approaches to what is essentially the problem of inequality. You can promote good behavior by showing Mercy or you can promote good behavior by deterring bad behavior through Cruelty. Each person made their choice, and the question of which philosophy won is answered in how the recipients of Goku's mercy develop after their defeat. They tend to become his friends and allies. They progressed... through struggle.

Why is it that hard for people to admit that toriyama did it best and that kai uncensored is the closest thing to his work. That doesn't devalue the funi dub because that its own thing with added plots and motivation. I love kai but i also love when gohan met a dying robot. Both are good.
Because it's subjective? It's closer to his work, but out of the two to me, it sucks. Kai has no weight to it. Honestly, the speech felt pointless, and all people really cared for was that he said son before his name. Hope of the universe is the better speech the only problem is simply that it does not really fit goku character all that that well, but If you play the speeches for 10 random people most are picking hope of the universe if they had no prior knowledge.

Do you prefer the version with original Japanese music or the version with Bruce faulkner? These make huge differences in the impact of each dub. In my humble opinion, the funimation dub is far better with bruce faulkner than without.

The Dragon Ball Z dub's speech doesn't fit Gohan's character at all because it is basically telling the Antagonist *I am a Legendary warrior and you have no hope of beating me* which is against Gohan's character because he doesn't believe himself to be special. This is one of the many major flaws of the speech, it doesn't suit a single character in the entire series.

The nostalgia factor is strong, the delivery is fantastic, and it's just the right kind of cheese to make a badass action line. All the other interpretations of the scene are fantastic, and they do fit with Goku's overall personality better, but man if the funimation dub isn't permanently emblazoned in my brain as such a badass one liner.
If anything is weak, it's the rest of Goku's "world of cardboard" speech around the final line where the "superman, but japanese" is a little much in retrospect and in knowing the character better than I did when it first aired. But, dor when they show came out, and me barely knowing anime at the time, I think the lines rewrite was actually perfect for western audiences at the time. Maybe it was dumbing down the character a little, but Son Goku was not a name that carried as much heft even within what the Toonami crowd at the time had seen of the character.
Again, they're all great, but this is a line where I'm more than happy to acknowledge my nostalgia as a factor in it being my favorite, where as the others are versions I really appreciate now that I've seen dragon ball and know about journey to the west and just in general know Goku better.
“Ally to good, Nightmare to you” holds a special place in my heart. On the other hand him embracing the legendary name of super saiyan is huge respect to vegeta and the saiyan race, he becomes the embodiment of vengeance for a race that was slaughtered.
Which in the original dub made NO SENSE at all. Hell even in this new version. Goku could care less if he were a saiyan or human. He's there to kick ass.
I think in the original series, super saiyan is the embodiment of rage and doesn't stand for justice. At times even quite the opposite. For example, Goku always had to use spirit bomb in his base stage. But I'm aware that that premise might have been modified especially with super now.
Also Goku is not an eloquent speaker, so the english dub makes no sense to me, with metaphors like 'your evil deeds is a noose'. But it might be my prejudice since I watched the Japanese dub and read the manga first lol.

During this fight with Freeza he literally accepts his Saiyan background before he uses the Genki Dama on Freeza. He could've only become a Super Saiyan after fully embracing his Saiyan side.
Which makes little sense cause Goku was trained by Roshi who told him to protect any in the universe who need it. The original was closer to dragon ball. Which I think is better than being closer to the manga, which Kai is sure, but it absolutely perverts Gokus ethics and morals, going as far as to pretend he never had any. Well that’s bullshit. Cause Goku fights to protect those who cannot fight for themselves. He does not just fight because he likes to. That is Vegeta.

The way he say's it is quite epic, I'd call it more generic 90s/2000s superhero dialogue than cheesy, well, maybe a little by today's standards, but the build up to that point makes it work for me, but obviously the new craze today is everything having to be exactly like the source material, so the heroic Goku thing is getting a lot of backlash in recent years, but I'll always respect that version of Goku since he was far more inspiring and is the Goku that Toei preferred which is why we get the heroic Goku in the original dragonball and in GT, wile I'd say half of Toriyama's selfish Goku is in Z, and then we get the full version of Toriyama's selfish and dumb Goku in DBS.

Sean screaming Son Goku in English gives me chills. I genuinely feel like "Son" is a vital part of Gokus character, regardless if it has any plot relevance. The abridged version did it best... mainly due to setting it up with the running gag of Frieza getting increasingly annoyed at Vegeta's super saiyan speeches. And cutting the third one short by finishing off Vegeta. So when he tries to do the same thing to Goku; and doesn't even scratch him; it's a pretty badass moment.
Also, the speech itself is hilarious.
The Falconer score is just amazing and iconic. But I love all the versions for different reasons. But the one I grew up with “the ally to good” version with the music? Will always be special in my heart.

As someone who grew up watching the original English dub and love faulconer’s music, I’m not gonna let nostalgia get in the way because honestly, I think Kai did the line so well.
Goku is never meant to be a heroic character, sure he’s done some feats, but he never really considers himself as an actual hero. You don’t really see him being concern about the people, he mainly shows concern around those that are close to him, such as his friends and family. The only reason he’s concerned about earth is because that’s where his friends live.
In Kai, the speech works because he’s literally instilling fear into frieza after explaining who he is and where he comes from (in terms of where he always lived), sure you could argue otherwise, but Kai is faithful to the original script and the point of goku in that form is to demonstrate his rage after witnessing the death of his friend (and at the time before he would even make it his natural form, he was always in rage), his rage is accurate to the point where he even lashes out at gohan (despite being his youngest son) while trying to control himself to telling him to head back home with piccolo.
I’m sure most of you know as to how the “son goku” line happened, but incase theres someone who doesn’t know, long story short, it was Sean’s idea who wanted to say the line so badly to the point where Chris ayres (or Sabat, idk which one) had to ask the higher ups if it’s ok to include it, which is why you’ll sometimes see that specific name appear in games or even in the movie/anime.
Overall, faulconer’s music doesn’t flow well with Kai, and the thing is, faulconer probably won’t work with funimation again due to a lawsuit between him and funimation (I’m surprised most people don’t know nor bring this up), which led to the two eventually parting ways (and funimation now uses the actual original music without having to use their own or hiring someone to compose music), meaning the chances of him returning is 0.
Overall, watching Kai is probably better since it doesn’t have that much filler and it’s an easier way for you to catch up on the story if you’re new to dragon ball. If you’re still fond of the original dub, it’s fine, but I wanted to give my take as to why I prefer kai in the first place.
Really insightful explanation, hit the nail on the head with everything you said! I'm also surprised a lot of people don't know about the Faulconer legal troubles as well.
I said on an earlier comment somewhere that one of the biggest issues lies in the fact that the English adaptations of the series skipped it's first 10 arcs and introduced the series on it's 11th instead lol. (Emperor Pilaf - Piccolo Jr. sagas not adapted in English until 2003.) So most people growing up were introduced to Goku as the hero who did great things already, but we didn't know what exactly he did or what traits made him who he was as a character back in 1996.
Plus, we weren't going on the internet as kids to find out what happened before the Saiyan saga to understand the cast like that. They could have changed everyone's characters and it wouldn't have made a difference to us then.
So when the english dubbed line debuted in this episode, it sounded great mostly to those in the west.
I also remember that during the same time, this show was competing against Superman and Batman animated series as well. To me, the line fit the time and the circumstance. It's very nostalgic and a footnote in the development of what built DBZ into what it later became here in the west.
I will always forever hold the DBZ Kai speech in my heart. The energy displayed by both Goku AND Freeza will NEVER be topped.

Terror that quacks in the night. It's a reference to an old 90's cartoon, Darkwing Duck.
I personally like Goku's pure fury of the original/Kai version, and Goku screaming his full name makes it feel more personal. And that's exactly what the fight became: personal. It wasn't personal before this, it was another challenge in Goku's mind; it wasn't personal when Vegeta died, while Goku had respect for Vegeta, he was still technically his enemy; but when Freeza unnecessarily killed Krillin, that's when Goku stopped looking at fighting as simply being a test of strength, and instead viewed it as a fight for his fallen best friend. It was finally personal, and Goku became the scariest monster imaginable: a monster with a pure heart.

@@fanaferrari1 when reading something meant to have impact the feeling can be lost very easily as it all depends on the reader. So the manga is not as reliable as a tv series. Similarly if you can't speak Japanese and don't know how they speak, reading the subtitles in the Japanese dub is has the same issue as the manga. DBZ completely changed the speech, and had sub par voice acting. Kai however had good voice actors, was in English, and stayed faithful to the manga.
When I heard Kai version of 'don't bother apologising', it felt so good!

I'm in 80s baby so I grew up on dragon Ball z but I only know the 1999 version of that speech I just recently had the same debate about this it's actually surprising to find out that the version that we heard is actually the original and not the version from 1999 but I find this to be very enlightening to know that there is three different versions of that same speech

i like that the original japanese language version is the way it is. schemmel's goku was cast to play a heroic interpretation of the character and thus i think his voice has a beaming quality to it that i think makes the original "ally to good" speech work better than the kai rewrite. ultimately they both work for the performer they were written for

I'm bias to the 1999 version and I still like it. I have never read the manga. But now I like the manga dialogue better. I'll explain why. Here's the quote.
Goku: "Don't you already know? I'm a saiyan who came from Earth to defeat you. A warrior of legend awakened by anger but possessing a calm heart. I am a super saiyan, Son Goku."
Both Goku and Freeza are flat character arcs. Goku's postive flat arc is about how the world responds to the truth he believes. That truth is Progression Through Struggle. Freeza's negative flat arc is about how the world responds to the lie he believes. That lie is Nobody Can Progress To Match Or Surpass Me.

The ideologies in conflict are intellectually timeless.
Goku champions Nurture and Freeza champions Nature. If nurture > nature then Progression Through Struggle = True. If nurture < nature then Progression Through Struggle = False.
Goku champions Meritocracy and Freeza champions Divine Right. If Nobody Can Progress To Surpass Freeza then Divine Right = True. If somebody can then Divine Right = False.
Goku champions Mercy and Freeza champions Cruelty.
If people can learn from their mistakes (progress through struggle) then Mercy > Cruelty. If people can't learn from their mistakes then Mercy < Cruelty.

So to relate all of this to Goku's speech, this line portrays these timeless debates better. Unlike in the 1999 version "Ally to good nightmare to you," Goku isn't expressing certainty in his philosophy. He is just re-iterating his philosophy that violence is a last resort. He is calm by nature and only violent by necessity.
Because the truth is that both Goku and Freeza's philosophies are equally resilient. They're different but valid approaches to what is essentially the problem of inequality. You can promote good behavior by showing Mercy or you can promote good behavior by deterring bad behavior through Cruelty. Each person made their choice, and the question of which philosophy won is answered in how the recipients of Goku's mercy develop after their defeat. They tend to become his friends and allies. They progressed... through struggle.

Why is it that hard for people to admit that toriyama did it best and that kai uncensored is the closest thing to his work. That doesn't devalue the funi dub because that its own thing with added plots and motivation. I love kai but i also love when gohan met a dying robot. Both are good.
Because it's subjective? It's closer to his work, but out of the two to me, it sucks. Kai has no weight to it. Honestly, the speech felt pointless, and all people really cared for was that he said son before his name. Hope of the universe is the better speech the only problem is simply that it does not really fit goku character all that that well, but If you play the speeches for 10 random people most are picking hope of the universe if they had no prior knowledge.

Iv watched both dubs, The movies, read the original manga hell iv gone out of my way to track down what i can of the "speedy" dub aswell as the infamous "big Green dub". Are you going to defend these, too? It seems as though you've made your camp closest to only liking the funimation version. That's fine, but dont call it subjective because it isn't one is closer to what akira toriyama (rip) intended, and one is a nostalgia trip for you.
Edit: BTW I need to recommend the big green dub of Bardok: father of goku. It's the best version... trust me
Another edit: this also depends on whst version of the funimation version specifically. Do you prefer the version with original Japanese music or the version with Bruce faulkner? These make huge differences in the impact of each dub. In my humble opinion, the funimation dub is far better with bruce faulkner than without.

I liked kai overall better and liked that it was more faithful in the end. Also, I never said it was better because of nostalgia again. I even played it for my nephew just to ask what sounded cooler, and he picked hope of the universe. Now he watched here and there, and I'm not saying others wouldn't pick the other, but that's my point. it's subjective. You are only picking it simply because it's loyal to the source material.
