I'm with you boys here, Strickland ftw. I think Strickland learned a lot from walking into that left, and getting starched by Poaton. And he learned even more seeing Whittaker walk into that howitzer by Dricus. Sean's become so good at distance management, as evidenced when he took the belt from Izzy. I see Sean keeping the distance early, then starting to close the distance during the 3rd, as Dricus slows down. Then, Strickland moves in with serious pressure and accuracy, and gets the tko in the 4th.
I just hope he’s able to defend those power shots well enough until then. Too many shots to the chin and he’ll go down. We need the peoples champ, not the “real” African so I hope he’s been training to negate the awkward forward punches. Sean’s an amazing counter-striker though so 🤞🏼

Yeah, I don't know if people are just over gazing Strickland dropping Izzy as his "power", but he didn't finish him. Only recent person he finished was a can (Magomedov).
Vs the more stocky builds like Cannonier and Usman, they keep him on the backfoot, or at least, very respectful of their power

Sean was coming forward with constant offense and pressure, while maintaining an excellent defense. So I'm really stoked to see what he can do vs Dricus!
Great analysis - I think if it ends quickly, it'll be from the power of Du Plessis but if it gets into the championship rounds, the odds swing back in favor of Strickland. Strickland wasn't even breathing hard in the fourth & fifth rounds of the title fight with Adesanya. Du Plessis was huffing and puffing in the first round of his fight with Brunson. I'll expect him to be in much better condition but can he keep pace with Strickland? We'll know on Saturday.
Stricklands cardio is amazing, but ill say its not surprising he wasn't tired in the Izzy fight. Izzy doesnt pressure at all, Sean had no worry of a takedown, and Izzy was on his back foot the whole fight. Stricklands style is just the perfect matchup against a fighter like Izzy. DDP's style is a 180 from Izzy's.

WB, after watching the Strickland fight something came to mind: that was a perfect example of when having the ability to switch stances can be an absolute game-changer. During the 3rd round, Sean got cut and the blood from it basically blinded his left eye. Since Sean fights orthodox and uses the Philly shell, about 70% of his field of view comes from his left eye. I wonder if switching to southpaw would've changed the rest of the fight since he'd be able to defend.
Worth noting that Dricus also had his left eye compromised (swollen shut) but was able to switch stances. Coincidentally after Sean got cut, Dricus suddenly landed a lot more and got hit a lot less.

Brain says DDP and even though my heart says Strickland I really don’t know if he’ll be able to take the power shots DDP can put out. If he makes Dricus fight 3+ rounds, it goes more in his favour. I’m prayingggggg for Sean to win. The champ we all need.

I think Sean's striking defense is going to get him the win. I think its going to be very dangerous fight for Sean however. Du Plessis is a monster and can put anyone out at 185 with a clean punch. Its hard to get a clean one in on Sean but anything can happen in MMA. Love you guys keep up the great work!

I'm going with Sean. Rock solid defense laser focused shots and heavy pressure. Excellent takedown defense and grappling. DDP throws a lot of looping reaching hard shots, Sean is one of the few who uses his hands arms and shoulders to block and diffuse shots, I think its easy for him to not get hit by DDP because of that. He learned to not drop that right from the Pierra fight. DDP has a punchers chance if he gets a lucky stray akward shot to land. I think that's what happened with Whitaker , and Sean has much better defense than Whitiker. DDP could possibley win on the ground also but I doubt it. Go Sean!

DDP is the new Keith Jardine. Got that awky style, but it seems like Team Strickland is confident Coach Eric looks confident, D'Sean looks confident. How many other people have knocked down the Izzfreak? That tight 1-2 is going to land...often, and if D'Sean brings some knees and those teeps, DDP won't have the takedowns to bank on either. I like DDP too, but I'm with Strickland. Going to be a great fight on mediocre card.

Sean sees everything coming from a mile away, just look at how he saw Izzy..so DDP will have to either bait him him with his opossum trick to get him with a left hook and then choke him out OR DDP some freak strength and can somehow negate Sean's tools..which if so is likely only going to work in those first few rounds, Sean will zone in and take those later rounds if he's not out in 2
I think people hear DDP speak and they fall for his confidence like they did with Conor. I think we need to go on what Sean says and he says this is a harder fight than Izzy and that DDP is awkward in a tough way and that he takes him into deep water and finishes him. Anyway, look at how long Sean's been in the game, how many fights, how many he's won, his KO's, the level of fighters, the training partners, the sparring..he LIVES to spar. He's sparring up until the day he fights! Yeah DDP can win but Sean could also put on a masterclass.
i was originally leaning toward ddp this week, but everything is pointing me towards sean with an early round win, if not outlasting ddp in 4 or 5. this will be a great opportunity to truly prove izzy was no fluke
I agree with both of your assessments. I also have to go with Captain America. I'm a big Sean Strickland fan. Honestly though, I can't remember ever seeing him ground fighting. Everybody says he's got some ground fighting skills, I've just never seen it.
I am going with Strickland. He has the best takedown defense in the division along with the best striking defense in the division. Dricus is powerful, has a good high guard (leaving his body exposed for those teep kicks) and his off beat unorthodox timing has worked well on some guys who no longer reside in the rankings but I feel this will only get him so far - and like you guys say, Dricus does typically fade and become sluggish despite him miraculously finding a way to get a finish with his opponents so far in the UFC, he's got some serious heart. The guy is good, I just find his style really goofy and it seems like in many of his bouts he kind of ends up winning by accident after getting hurt or tired and lethargic etc rather than brutal dominations or "manhandling" as he and his coach like to call it.
So he didn't dominate Darren Till at all and come on how many lucky knockouts can a person have.... be analytical not biased... it's and unorthodox and ugly looking style yes... but luck??

Fun Fact: No two people on earth pronounce Dricus Du Plessis's name exactly the same. That being said I'm picking Du Plessis. Yes Strickland is constantly walking forward but he doesn't usually do it at a fast pace. Du Plessis has knockout power and likes to start the fight at a frenetic pace. I think he catches Sean coming forward sort of like Pereira did. However I would not be surprised if it went the other way either.
DDP is more Dynamic and has the power advantage. I dont see Strickland Beating whiticker let alone steamroll him like DDP did. You can also see Stricklands got alot of respect for DDP wich means he's gonna be the one going backwards.

I’m a fan of both fighters, so the real winner is me
I am wondering how many are like me out here. I buy 3 -5 PPVs a year, so I am a bit picky. I almost bought this one just because of Strickland Vs Du Plessis. But when I looked at the rest of the card I just can't justify buying this one. To me, the only other 2 fights 2 fights I might care about are the Curtis and the Magny fights. And that's only because I am curious if they can get into the tops of their division. I hear UFC 300 is sounding suspect. I feel like their is a need to add some other formats to MMA so other people can show their skills so fans like myself can know who they are and want to see them in PPV fights.
Anyone else feels this way?
The problem is no matter who they brought to mimick DDP Sean will not care, he will still fight like standing with his shoulders in front and come lazily forward, he would feel I dont listen to change my style, and that is why he will lose, Izzy also is stubborn just want to fight on the feet, feel no need to mix things up.

Dricus is much better than most people imagine. Here in South Africa we understand his class and character. Sean will need to be at his very best to have any chance whatsoever.
