    You know, many years ago in the early 2000s on some forum was a section that contained quote of great men and women. There were a lot from Hemingway. And I remember guys posting on the forum about him, saying how he was bullshit in that he didn’t walk his talk. How he was insecure, a hypocrite..blah blah. And I read about him and sort of found myself agreeing with what was said about him at the time. Now I’m here listening to some of the quotes from Ernest again and I’m thinking so what? So what if he didn’t walk his talk completely, who the hell does??? No one I know. What matters now is most of the stuff he’s saying here is 100% spot on right, and has so much more meaning to me now. And definitely a lot more relatable.

    "Be afraid of a friend who often says flattery to you. TO flatter means to tell a person exactly what he thinks about himself." Can anyone elaborate on what they think it means?

    • @angrysilence1234....
      @angrysilence1234.... Před 2 lety +7

      I think it, basically means, that people often flatter others on things they want in their own lives. It could already be there, it's just that they're not aware of it. That of course, only applies to "true" flatteries. Flatteries given, that are a lie, are about wanting to "control" the person you flatter and, perhaps, to change that person into a person more like, or who thinks they are more like, the essence of those flatteries. Flatteries, that are true, are about making the flattered person more aware of who they are as a person through complimenting them for such. And, possibly causing them to flourish, as a human being. Flatteries, that are lies, are about making the flattered person less aware of who they really are and about causing them to behave more, as they were flattered and less like who they really are. Thus, turning them into more of a fool. ANYONE WHO CAN BE SWAYED BY SHEER FLATTERY, CAN BE SWAYED BY ALMOST ANYTHING. AND, is not at all aware of WHO THEY REALLY ARE, INSIDE. This, of course, is MY OWN OPINION. For what it's worth. True flattery is about love, helping others realize a truth they may not otherwise. False flattery is about the lie, about gaining something from the lied to, whether it be something physical or something emotional. That's my own, personal take on it.

    This is so true, I've closed off every selfish out for themselves person's in my life..being too soft and caring about others doesn't work...it only was effective when I was with groups of like minded people all like self, whom understood that giving is also receiving.. and that the purpose in life was to better it...and help others along the way..that has been impossible living where I live because I understand others but i don't fit in...something to do with something I wrote years ago landing in the hands of the wrong people, whom never forget and are hiving of it still. And all because back then I belonged to an Indian group in a local town and enjoyed the company of being with stimulating, intellectual people. Didn't go down well with close family, and those with a cultured racist mind set...and because I wrote about a famous relative whom I had only spoken to family about, because the story got out, the people not liking me and making assumptions about me, thought that passing it all around town meant I must also have money..and how could they make my life hell. All drug addicts and dealers, now I wanna get something straight...its not the drugs that bother me, or their life style as I've mixed and mingled and given healing to these types before in the past...its their anti social behaviour that worries me and how they point the accusing finger at the innocents and not themselves..because in their minds they have already forgotten about it! My life here has been made abject misery..no point reporting to either police or housing nothing ever gets done...What usually happens is the victim moves! And this is a culture moving right across the UK and one our Conservative government needs to look into, because prejudices are rife, and if ya don't fit in or are seen as different by keeping yourself to yourself you are ridiculed and picked on..this is not an isolated incident for me, previous address was due to an ADHD child. Here it's because I did a test run in writing and therapy it got out by people I trusted and instead of keeping it safe until I collected it, it was being passed all over the world from the UK. Its not much to expect to be left alone and to lead a quiet and peaceful solitary life of my choosing...thank you

I was a shepherd, now I’m a king. I’m respected; I have a lasting dynasty.” He said, “It could only be one thing: the Sovereign God.” Five times in the next few versus, he referred to God as sovereign. In verse 28 he said, “Oh Sovereign Lord, You have promised good things to me.” The Sovereign Lord has good things for you. It’s not based on how well you perform, who likes you, what family you come from, what the economy does. These are blessings, favor, breakthroughs that God has already written in your script.

    The one about flattery, perhaps that is what distinguishes it from 'complimentary.' To flatter is, perhaps, to compliment with the intention of getting something out of it or achieving an end goal. To compliment, at least when I do it, is to share a sincere element of good that I perceive. I believe that if you feel inclined to compliment someone about something, to do it, just do it. Their hat, their dress, the way they do something impressively, whatever it is. If you notice something about someone and you like that thing that you notice, provided it's not indecent like 'nice ass' or 'nice tits' or something, then say it. Or, take that indecent compliment and make it more broad, "You look outstanding."
    Regardless, though, if a compliment or a bit of flattery is not GENUINE then it is MANIPULATION. So whatever it is, be genuine about it. Do not LOOK for compliments to give or flattery to deliver. If you notice something you like or are impressed by, seems to me that in all my experimentation with the concept, it does no harm to say so. If the person you compliment takes issue with your words, that's their problem. If the person you compliment is with someone (maybe a partner or spouse) who takes issue with it, then it seems to me to likely be a sign of lacking in terms of either self-confidence or trust.
    I can still remember, taking a photograph of a duck that was probably eating grass or something. I gave a quack like a duck as I did so, deadpan, just one singular "Quack" as I handled my DSLR camera. I then realized that a young woman was coming near on the sidewalk behind me, passing by. She may well have heard me quack, she already had a bit of a smile on her face. I looked back to her, paused as I held my camera, looked her up and down, and quite genuinely said "You look LOVELY today." Something like that. She seemed ever so slightly flustered, grinned more broadly, maybe touched her hair or something and replied quite happily "Thank you." Honestly I felt as though I had a genuine impact on her day, and that perhaps she may have even fancied me a bit. I imagine if I spun about and decided to walk along with her in a spontaneous conversation that she'd have been very happy to chat with me, may have even giggled pleasantly if I turned the camera to her as she walked by, growing shyly self-conscious and flustered yet complimented at someone turning a seemingly expensive camera in her direction. Depending on how things may have went, perhaps I'd have ended up marrying her instead of my current wife. Who knows?
    Nice tits on that one, though, as I recall. Probably a nice ass, too. And if I said so, perhaps in her case if I talked her up well enough, she'd have been VERY pleased to hear it. But careful in your own experimentation in social interaction. It's a skill like any other, a skill I discovered I was extremely lacking in when I was in my mid-20s or so. Knew I had to fix that, and well, I like to think that I did. I'm also a full-time writer, something I've managed to accomplish at a younger age than Charles Bukowski, though perhaps not quite so in terms of Ernest Hemmingway. Also by 'full-time,' I mean it manages to pay the bills and rent and what not. For Hemmingway, he wrote 'A Fairwell to Arms' at 30 years old it seems or maybe his late 20s. I imagine that did quite a bit more than 'pay the bills' lol Though in my defense, I had not experienced a world war to get wounded in and write about. Nah I just grew up poor with shitty parents, been homeless before, and became an alcoholic. Might be a bit cookie-cutter for many authors who 'make it,' though have I truly 'made it?' I rely on those who commission from me. Without them, I'd be unemployed and a drain on my wife unless I manage to get a job. I hate jobs... much like Bukowski did I suppose.
