Oh wow, I never realised that's one of the reasons cycling shoes are that stiff! I figured it all had something to do with power transfer, but I guess that's only part of the story. Kudos for enlightening me! :-)

Thanks for posting this! I have such a hard time finding sz 14W bike shoes that are comfortable... hoping to convert some hikers for bikepacking!
I am still using my Shimano SH-SD65 Bike Sandals, well the 4th pair of them. They are three strap cycling sandals providing much better cycling control/support than two strap cycling sandals can have leather dream about accomplishing. Only problem they are only made for spd mountain bike pedals, and not SPD-SL pedals used on road bicycles. Have any one you know looked at creating open toe stiff sandals that do not interfere with a riders toes, and dry off very rapidly if they happen to get wet. Yes I wear socks with sandals in the winter to keep my feet warm, and shoe covers for wet times...
