From the fierce Gaelic warriors of medieval Scotland to the proud traditions of Canada’s Highland regiments today, trace the history and culture of an enduring military icon.
In this video I talk about swords and other things I've encountered over the years that have failed to impress. Not all of these were inherently bad. Sometimes it was bad lack with an unusually negative personal experience (a lemon, perhaps?), sometimes it was something that simply didn't live up to my expectations for one reason or another. Either way I hope you find this entertaining. :)

SKall: I have a genuinely really cool sponsor.
Me: Yeah, right.
Skall: It's the Canadian war museum.
Me: Oh shit, forget what I said.
Carlos Haneen skall in another universe
Skall: Raid Shadow Legends
99% of the times I hear someone on youtube say "hey guys I've got a cool new sponsor!" it turns out to be Gaijin, Wargaming, Raid: Shadow Legends, or some similar crappy FTP game.
It looks like it was a decent exhibit from the pictures.
Yeah, it’s better than raid dollar square skills VPN legends
@@shockedgame5558 that universe is now also this one
You're sponsored by a *museum?* What? And a fairly major one. That's amazing.
Skallagrim is basicly a legend at this date
it's the only good museum we have in Ottawa, I walk infront of it everyday to get to work. Good job getting sponsored by the Canadian government.
Video liked for the sponsor before we even got into the content (which is also worth a like!). Wow!
@Skallagrim Massive gz
Skall: we have a sponsor

Skall: no ... ITS A FUCKING MUSEUM ...
A FUCKING MUSEUM!!!!!
Jack Churchill will forever be one of the most hilarious, and well-deserved of receiving praise soldiers I've ever come across. The man had courage very few men are able to match. I mean, storming entrenched MG42s with a basket-hilt broadsword, a longbow and bagpipes? And actually being effective? He's honestly legendary.
Must be one hell of a basket hilt
Never take tall tales like that from war times too seriously.
You have to consider that everybody in the information chain had a interest in making stuff sound better than it was.
The soldiers wanted to be heroes.
The commanding officers and the politicians wanted to boost morale.
The press wanted to sell newspapers.
And anyone passing on the story after the war wanted to be respectful of their heroes or was raised believing the stories.
There are tons of widely accepted war stories that make absolutely no sense when you apply any scrutiny to them and this is one of them.
What about 10 weapons that surprised you with how good they were, especially for the price?
The butter knife is 1st place
I'd like to see that.

Congrats on the new sponsor. That's cool AF, Skall.
Rotgut Wine well said 😊
Indeed, a very fitting but also surprising sponsor.
Good to see you getting recognition from a museum of all places.
I often skip sponsor content, but not this time! Well done sir, well done. I will have to visit that exhibit now.
Rotgut Wine nah
Sorry folks, apparently my editing software has imploded... Vegas crashed so many times during the editing process and I had to re-render something like 6 times because I kept catching missing parts that were somehow chopped off despite being there in the edited file. And now I find that the final version has yet ANOTHER missing section (at 08:04). >_<
I give up, this video is officially cursed. It is what it is now. -_-
Does anyone have recommendations for better editing software? Might look into Premiere Pro, although depending on how time-consuming it is, having to relearn everything may be a problem.
I was gonna say, that segway between 6 and 5 was kind of abrubt, albeit barely noticeable.
It’s cool Skallagrim, still enjoyed the video! 👍
Eh, it's not a big deal, I can imagine what you were gonna say (something about not reviweing it even though it was sent to you). Thanks for the heads up!
I've used both Vegas and Premiere Pro, and the switch between them wasn't a big deal. They're pretty similar, all things considered. Also, I hope to see you around Halifax when you move here!
I guess it depends what features you need from the editing software really- for video-in-video + text/image overlay type editing you really don't need anything too powerful ( or expensive ). Might be worth looking at some of the free options that are very popular and have a good feature-set: www.oberlo.com/blog/best-free-video-editing-software
12:40 I'm convinced Skall is secretly a paladin wielding magically glowing swords quivering in the wake of its divine damage! Super awesome shot there!
Amazing sponsor, mate! That’s really impressive- what an honor! I remember that Fëanor sword- it was heartbreaking to hear how bad it actually was. For what it represented, and what it was meant to be, it was just so disappointing- it made me sad. And I have to say- I appreciate you being honest about your relationship with Glock. While most people are afraid to speak their true opinions when everyone else is in opposition to it, it’s important to be honest, and it shows courage and character when you do. Especially in such a public arena. I never liked Glocks, and had a lot of disdain and abuse thrown my way when I said so. I am a diehard Sig Sauer shooter, and will always sing their well-deserved praises. Glocks feel cheap and plastic-ky to me- I never became comfortable with the trigger safety, grip shape, or slide solidity- it always felt as if it were about to be shaken apart. Thanks for giving your honest opinions.
How rare would you like your steak?
Make it an actually interesting sponsor.
Wow that is rare. GJ Skall if I were in Canada I'd visit that.
he's gonna get salmonella from how rare that is
Woah dude eating animals while their still alive is really immoral
Congratulations on the sponsorship. It should be an interesting exhibit.

Great video as usual. This is only really relevant to the very beginning, but I'm a Jack Churchill nerd, so I thought I'd clear up a couple of things.
1). He was not Scottish. He was English, though born in Ceylon. He was, however, undoubtedly a Scotophile.
2). He only joined the Seaforth Highlanders after WWII in 1946. All his previous military service was in the Manchester Regiment (technically the commandos, but as they were a temporary wartime unit, the men remained with their original regiments on paper).
3). The picture you used when you mentioned bagpipes is not Churchill. That's a screenshot from the film The Longest Day, and features Pipe Major Leslie de Laspee playing the role of Bill Millin, who skirled his way up the beaches at the Normandy landings as the piper of Lord Lovat. Churchill himself wasn't a dedicated piper, he merely brought his pipes with him for the hell of it.
4). The Fleming in his name is debatable. All his military papers (Sandhust documents, army lists, etc.) omit Fleming, as does at least one of the books written by his brother (I can't remember the others). There are, however, various reliable sources that do have Fleming in his name. This is less a correction, more an interesting point.
If he was half as awesome as they say he was, the Fleming in his name is certainly authentic.
It is fascinating that it is not the fact that he wore a sabre in combat or killed a German Feldwebel with a longbow that are discussed here, but such menial technicalities such as the exact regiment he was in or why he played bagpipes. Amazing. Still, thanks for the info.
You are certainly welcome.
I like to consider pedantry an art form.
Speaking of, there are a few things to mention in regards to your comment, and my original comment - there is always more to learn.
Firstly, he wore a basket-hilted broadsword in combat in the second world war. During his prior military service, there is a picture of him wearing a sabre, but it is unknown whether or not he carried this during service in the Burma rebellion.
Secondly, it has come to my attention that at present, the weight of evidence is against him killing anyone with his longbow. The only primary account is his own, in which he denies it. The war diary for the 4th Infantry Brigade does emphatically refer to some bow-related incident in the Saar, but gives no specifics, and it doesn't actually seem that Churchill was in the Saar during the war. It was certainly widely believed contemporaneously that the event happened, evidenced by the amount of people who have mentioned that it happened, but there are no accounts I am aware of from anyone who was actually present. The primary account of the event comes form Donald Featherstone's 'Bowmen of England', which does not deign to cite a source.
Thirdly, the answer to the Fleming debate. Fleming was not in his name by birth, but it was adopted by him at some time during his adult life, before the second world war. It is unknown if he ever had it officially changed.

That is likely the most on-brand, badass sponsor you could've ever gotten. Nice work, Skall.
Is there a chance you will review the Kaer Morhen forge? They sell Witcher sword reproductions and are approved by CD Projekt Red but ya know. I and, I'm sure tons of other people, would prefer if someone competent like you would review their work.

Where to find dem nekkers & drowners to test that silver?
I'm guessing they're display swords?
From what I've heard they're balanced more like training swords and some people have complained about a part of the guard on one of the silver swords scratches their fingers. Awesome sponsor! I'm loving that the museum is modern and savvy enough to find such a great place to advertise such a cool exhibit. If I lived nearby I'd definitely go and see it.
Awesome video Skall! Around 8:00 I think some recorded footage got lost. Thank you for your hard work!
your survival hatchet just needs a good sheath for the knife part.
Lacks a pommel, but you could always add that to the sheath... wait things aren't supposed to be like that
sheath that locks shut over the part where the knife handle and axe-head meet could work i suppose.
multiple use tools often have parts that can be augmented with add-ons, its not just a gaming term :P
@@metalk1tt3n Bingo, and once again I say the sheath can have a pommel that can be unscrewed and used to hammer stuff if needed
The survival hatchet still has potential; perhaps make the knive bit slightly longer, with a diffent profile, and grind ...
Likewise the axe bit could again would, with a slight tweak to the grind. Another tweak is what metal it was made up off; perhaps the reason why it failed was (perhaps ... maybe ...) poor edge retention, such as it it was made of D2, or similar, it coulda been better. Likewise -- and this I am pulling outta my own butt -- forge-welding 1080, 1094, and 15N20, but skipping the acid etch stage, would produce a 'clean-looking' blade, but with the associated toughness and edge-retention that -- I think -- blades made that way have.
Also, and again, this maybe out if my butt again, but prototypes often have to go through mutiple iterations before was can be considered 'successful' ...
I am sure there are knife makers out there whom will take one look at the design, see the potentials, and the flaws, and would be willing/able, to iron out (pun intended ...) the problems you had to reach the tool you imagined ...
Likewise, there is a sword I have in mind, that has the blade, and edge, geometry of a side-sword, but has the length, guard, grip, and pommel, of a small-sword, purely because, at 5'2", I would imagine carrying a long-ish sword would be rather awkward, especially as my hips have gotten bad in old age ... trouble is, I know it will take a decent swordsmith to pull it off, as designing something is one thing; building the bloody thing is very much another ...
If the knife part had a sheath it would allow you to hold it lower down which should make it easier to use as a hatchet. The sheath itself might be suitable for storing a flint stick or something akin to the mechanism of a flint lighter at the end so it could help with starting a fire and maybe wrapped with cord that could be unraveled if needed.
And of course it would also be helpful as it would give you something to attach a loop to so you could hang the thing from a belt or put it around your wrist.
Congratulations on such a cool sponsorship, you've definitely earned it after all these years of making history content. Wish I could go see the exhibit!
Congrats on the sponsor, that is very cool. It shows on your face how excited and happy you are. Really enjoyed this list. As others have mentioned, seems to be an editing mishap around 8:00.

Videos like this are definitely important, sometimes exposing the flaws of certain things is much better than "sweetening" the truth, not everything's perfect, there's real inferior and poorly-made products out there and telling what it's all really like saves a lot of folks time, money, pain and disappointment.
I would never have thumbs-upped this, but props to you for having a go at your own project. I can respect that. You're a good man.
Finally got the notification! And for a list I've been looking forward to at that.
40 S&W do have some mixed results on feeding in my experience. I have an M&P that is quite fussy about the ammo it likes to feed. And I agree on the glock grips, not natural for my hands.
Does sound like you got an extra fussy lemon of a Glock though.
With current bullet technology there's barely any reason to have .40S&W over a 9mm.
@@weege5.45 barely but there is still a reason if you want a heavier bullet 40sw may have fell out of the tacticool limelight but it not a bad round.
@@secondswell
I won't disagree that the bullet doesn't perform, but from a self-defense standpoint it's the platform that comes up short: shorter barrels and smaller frames. These limit velocity and capacity to where it's a toss up and in SD more capacity is generally better than penetration and the 9 wins. In a carbine with identical capacities? A .40 wins. A 10mm wins more. :D
Glocks can be fussy about their ammo they like to feed. I have a G19 and it fucking hates alluminum casings. one in every five or so shots will fail to load the round if I am using alluminum. Anything else it will feed with litterally no issue. Shot about 600 rounds through it and the only time it failed to feed was with the cheap ammo
@@sebastianriz4703 That's not the Glock. That's the actual casing causing the problem and it will do so in other firearms. Brass is the preference because it expands better than aluminum and steel and creates a seal so you aren't losing gas and therefore pressure+velocity. Basically you are losing back pressure with the aluminum casing which is causing the slide to not function the way it should.
Greetings once again from nova Scotia, thanks for the great video, I respect your honesty and fairness you bring to the table. I have had the pleasure of visiting the National War Museum several times, I may suggest have you been to the Halifax Citadel, it's a fantastic place, my grandfather's kilt and rifle from ww1 was donated by my dad many years ago, is part of the vimmy ridge display, that's enough of that, be safe, be strong and as always best regards,Arthur
Wow. I LOVE the creativity in your own design here, Skall. Even if it did make it on this particular list, lol! I can honestly say that I've never seen anything quite like it. Cool video :)
Congrats on the sponsor Skal! Amazing. The Royal Alberta Museum is running a viking exhibit here (even a special event today with the Ravens reenacting group). So, when do you start your tenure at the museum? ;-)
I went there about 4 days ago. Was shocked at size of some of the Viking swords specifically the pommels.
Sweet. We’re going in the next couple of weeks. Apparently they’re selling horn steins in the gift shop...lol. It should be cool.
They are selling the Horn Steins in the gift shop. My wife went in there by herself while I looked after our daughter and I have a feeling she may have picked one up for me as a gift. But I guess all I can do is wait and see :)
Your first problem was buying a Glock in .40 S&W. Glocks are fine in 9mm, but they've had a lot of problems with their rechamberings over the years particularly when their .40 S&W Glocks had a habit of exploding.
They make useful grenades.
@@DIEGhostfish you ever heard of a self-defence grenade? no? that's cuz they are the ultimate pacifiers, everyone goes happily home and there's nothing to write about in the paper.
Are 10mm glocks converted to .40 good? The early .40s were 9mm scaled up, but scaling down seems better.
@@0Asterite0 just ignore .40s&w, it is expensive, you get no advantage over 9mm, it isnt a good round
@@jordanhicks5131 it's not expensive and saying it's a bad round is nothing but your opinion not a fact.

Way to go, Skall!
Skall has thick, manly, sword-wielding and pommel-throwing hands! They are ill-suited for tiny baby Glocks!
Note how none of the swords mentioned had a scewable pommel.

There's a weird jump cut between 6 and 5, I imagine that's a mistake?
He probably had to cut that part out because he took the first vid down
Definitely a mistake, Skall would NEVER jump cut, it's worse than spinning cuts ☺
Editing software kept failing.
What is weapon 5 anyways?
This was a fun list. What you said about the firearm was spot on. I feel the same way and we're not alone in wondering if they were made for human hands. Luckily, there are lots of other brands out there.
Here's a weapon that won't disappoint - the sharpened stick-spear! Just find a straight sapling, or branch, that's 1 to 2 inches thick, and anywheres from five to ten feet long, cut it down/off, figure out how long you want it, shorten it, and then sharpen it. Nothing fancy, and while I doubt it will do any good against someone wearing armor or an exceptionally angry bear/boar, you still have something that's got a point that can poke someone's eyes out!
Hey Skall, the text for the comment on the extra bendy rapier being an impressive sickle blade shows up for a split second at 14:06. This video really is cursed. xD

Glock 35s ain’t great, but 17s and 19s are great
That’s a really cool sponsorship! Well done, man!
Awesome sponsor and I can attest - the Canadian War Museum is one of the finest in the world.
My first suspicion regarding the Glock would be the caliber of the ammo.
The Glock was originally designed for 9x19 mm Parabellum rounds. And when you have a weapon development history like that, having the model chambered in a different caliber is almost always invariably an afterthought, which might create a decreased function.
Seven Proxies I was gonna say I feel like Glocks should stay 9mm lol.
Bricks work no matter the calibre.
(They jam, and are hardly perfect firearms, but do better then 3-4 malfunctions a magazine)
Honest opinion, Glocks are excellent pistols, it’s just all the other companies have gotten so much better that Glock’s flaws are more noticeable than say the 90s
Tadicuslegion78 glocks are like cheap whores. They get the job done but they ain’t pretty
I will stick to my H&K USP
I’ve heard some horror stories about Glocks which is why I’m getting a Smith and Wesson for my first pistol.
@@alansmith19890 Glock are great . The 40cal round sucks .
@@CMG78 to be honest, I never fired an other pistol than an usp (P8) but as far as my experience with the P8 goes (that's the military variant of the USP used by the German military) it's pretty reliable. I can't remember that I saw one jam on a fellow recruit during my basic training and with so many first time shooters around minor "errors" like limpwristing or not holding it perfectly straight are to be expected. Also the weapons used in basic training units are probably heavily used, not exactly treated gently, parts might end up on the ground next to the mat used for disassembly drills rather that on the mat at times and during the very first drills without ammo or with dummy rounds magazines are dropped constantly. None of the superiors ever complained about the weapon and its easy to disable and reasamble. I also like it's look and the safety and decocking lever system on it (if you look it up on Wikipedia it's the variant 1 or 2).
11:10 that is a clever logo
Congratulations on getting sponsored by a war museum. This is great news!
Glocks in general are extremely reliable. However the .40 s&w Glocks are kind of known for having problems.
I have a Glock 22 (.40 S&W) which has been very reliable.
Glocks are over priced and hyped too much, he should've bought a Beretta 96 would have worked out fine
@@briandamage5677 they're fairly hit or miss. Especially when they were originally brought to market.
