Repairing a Moen Posi-temp Bath Tub/Shower Valve

After a professional plumber said the leaking tub valve was not repairable and that I should cut out a two by two foot section of tile and sheet rock around the tap so he could come back next week and install a complete new valve, I took up the challenge to find a way to remove the valve cartridge from the housing and install a new one without disturbing the wall around it. This video shows the steps I took to complete the repair. This type of valve has been the subject of many CZcams videos and most focus on problems with breaking the valve cartridge free from it s housing so it can be extracted and replaced. This video describes a home-made tool that I made and used to loosen a very firmly seized valve cartridge.

I like the way you figured this out for yourself and went around what the hapless plumber was trying to get you to do. The plumber knew how to correctly fix it, he was just trying to take advantage of you. Sad the way people take advantage of others. But I have to hand it to you, you are a real trooper. I do this all the time myself.

Hello Carl, it is April 21 2020 (Tuesday) your how to video of all the ones that I have viewed is the one that saved me from expense and frustration and most importantly your method worked for me! I did not have any 1" aluminum stock on hand but rather a 3/4" car jack handle (steel) which after carving out the top worked just right and voila the rest is history. Thank You Carl

Thank you sir ! That is the bevel- slot had been designed for the cartridge's housing .

Congratulations Carl. You saved that $700 and designed a great extraction tool for free. I bought a knock off at Home Depot for $12. MOEN sells one for far more money. Excellent! Thank you.

Carl, I really appreciate video's like this! And I'm certain others will benefit as well - and save a lot time and money - thanks to your effort. CZcams helped me repair our refrigerator and the kitchen faucet.

Thank you so much for your video. Both of your suggestions, to gently twist it back and forth for a while to loosen it and to use those ears against the ramps did the trick. Not having a pipe to make your tool, I was able to use regular slip joint pliers and hand strength to grab it like your tool and gently rock it loose. I watched several other videos before I saw yours, most broke those ears off trying to pull it out. Thanks again.

Your patience removing the value was admirable and I'll remember it next time I get stuck. Being a hardware store owner I seem to remember in one trainings they talked about removing Moen stems from faucets. They suggested releasing the suction on the back side of the value by detaching one of the water supplies. It might work with shower unit.
Also far as the $700. A good new unit to replace what you have might be $200. Plumbers in my area get about $140 an hour plus a $75 trip charge. It adds up fast. Just perspective for my side of the counter

I am a handywoman and just had to change one of these for the first time to a client a couple of weeks ago. I told them I had no experience with Posi-temps but because of my ratings/reviews they wanted to keep me anyway. I told him I would look to see what it takes to change the valve and if I’m comfortable with it I will do it. I got the client to send me some pictures of the trim kit so I can have Moen identify the rough valve and thus the replacement valve. I do this in advance of my visit because the big box stores don’t always carry the exact valve needed. If I go and pull the valve and there is not one available locally the house now has no water until I can get a new valve. Moen gave me the correct valve part number which included the removal tool. That tool as you found out is a complete and utter joke and barely survived the removal process. It actually broke those plastic pieces on the valve body coming out and ripped up the tool. I love the idea of creating a metal removal tool. I don’t know why Moen insists on creating these the way they have. Fortunately I was able to get the valve changed and everything functioned normally. Oh and by the way that plumber that wanted to charge you $700 to change what is normally a replacement kit should lose his license. I hope that you wrote a Yelp review warning everybody what a crook he was. Unbelievable! By the way, one small improvement to your metal tool would be to sand down two opposing sides just a little bit to create flat spots that a crescent wrench will work on. That way you don’t have to keep digging into it with vice grips. You could probably even put the end of it into a vice and compress it a little bit and that will do the same thing. I am definitely going to create one of these and put it in my plumbing box.

K111: Thanks for your kind and useful comments; filing a couple of wrench flats on the tool is a good idea. ///Carl

I have two of those same valves in my house. I believe there were at least 2 valve lengths available for this style, so it was a good idea (as always) to take it with you to the store. Mine weren't lodged in nearly as tight as yours, and came out by a simple turn when replacement was needed. We did the same as you and installed a metal knob. That was the only hang up, trying to find a simple affordable knob in brushed nickel. Everything durable that every store stocks is for chrome. I did eventually find a Moen Method knob in brushed nickel we are happy with. I'm actually glad Moen still makes parts for a 25 year old valve, or we might have been looking at an expensive fix as well. I also found conflicting information on CZcams on which side is installed facing up (one flat has a notch), so that's something to be careful of. Good for you for not giving up on it.

The Plumber should have had a removal tool in his tool box, guess he figured it wasn't worth his time.. They can be found online and some of the Big Box stores should have them. Awesome job making the one you used.

Thanks for taking the time to produce this video, I am sure many will benefit from your talent. It is a shame that a plumber would take the easy way out for himself $$$$$ and not offer a solution that was beneficial for both of you.
It aggravates me to see a so called professional take advantage of unknowing folks.
1 for Carl 0 for the loser. I am about to employ one of your lift mechanisms to the underside of my dust collection drum on my D.C. System that I am building.
Thank you for sharing your talent!

TheFalconJetDriver you are so right! My Dad was a Master tradesman ( Masters license in plumbing, electrical, & A/C). He could have just sat behind a desk, but he loved to do only repair work. He kept that going until he was 67, and he would never even have suggested to just replace a valve before its time. The few times we ever replaced a whole valve was when someone requested it or if it could not be repaired. Some of the valves we repaired, were well over 30 yrs old and worked better than the new ones. Of course those only used a cone/seat washer and we had to grind the brass seat base with a diamond based grinding wheel.
Mr. Holmgren just expertly demonstrated the perfect process with that valve, a true professional should have offered him that service. My Dad never had to advertise and he always offered the same quality service people payed for, and usually above and beyond the paid price. Thank you Mr. Holmgren for sharing you valuable knowledge and your values!

Here is a simple trick to get the valve out.
Take off the shower head and replace with a standard end cap (1/2" black iron cap - less than $2). Take the pin off the cartridge and turn on the main water supply. Wait until the valve is pushed out by water pressure or you can help it out with pliers. (Have someone ready to turn off water supply) Done!

I agree the plumber should have been able to remove this one but you would not believe how many times they wont pull out because the gaskets get lodged in the valve body. 600$ is a good price to open wall and install new faucet and trim. 700$ seems high depending on region
