    Metheny and Mays...there may never be a more magical combination

    • @brianfrost7376
      @brianfrost7376 Před rokem

      Yeah!…they most certainly are and were the epitome of 20th century jazz fusion…a living jazz, not just modern jazz…and certainly not ‘elevator music’… but rather, jazz that retains both a classic form, (in its’ improvisational style, thus avoiding a tendency toward monotonously unenlightened, genre-trapped, repetitive, improv guitar/piano ‘licks’) and its’ traditional blues bound chordal structures and progressions, while adopting/ incorporating non-jazz ‘like’ counter rhythms and extended compositional forms, drawn from other cultures, resulting in a more complex, and satisfying listening experience!
      This… the genius of, such unparalleled, innovative compositional beauty,is provided by, Lyle Mays. A combination of Classical structures, with highly sophisticated chord and tonal progression!
      Thank you Lyle for contributing to the texture of music on this planet…Your vision is inspiring, I listen, and try to incorporate such tonal and rhythmic awareness! Thank you for seeing more than the rest of us!

    I saw this tour in the fall of '78 at a college gym in Grand Rapids, MI. The PMG was the opening act for Leo Kottke. This concert still stands as the greatest jazz show I've ever witnessed. After taking all their equipment off the stage and bringing out a stool and a mic stand, Leo proceeding to clear the place out. He was either drunk or maybe that is part of his act but we stayed for 3 songs and left. An incredible act to follow. Felt sorry for him. Quite the booking disaster . Have been a Pat fan ever since.

    Despite the lack of stereo sound, there is something genuine in how it sounds here. The music of the 1970s, in general, was the best, when the art was not done purely for money and status.
    The whole scene and setup in the video is magical. The song is a work of art.

    The only live show of his I went to was in Manchester UK in 1989. It was probably the most enjoyable 'gig' I've ever attended. Not so much for the playing - Pat's 175 tone was too mellow to cut through properly [and Lyle's piano solos were largely inaudible]. That was my honest impression; I rate him as the greatest guitarist however. Blame the mixer man I suppose... The real quality was in the fantastic rhythmic swing and general feel-good aspect they effortlessly created; not to mention Pat's huge charisma - which swept one along beautifully.
