The earthly cord was cut
And we are orphans in the universe
Thunder is no longer the voice of God
Lightning is no longer a moralizing missle
Knowledge is no longer shaped like a snake
What's left of the alphabet is deep underground
In places without faces
Everything we want, will require unfathomable violence
But contradictions are nothing new
The only newness is the youness
I LOVE ITTT, the alphabet is alive and breathing tho 💔
What does this mean?😓
!!!!!!!
"The earthly cord was cut" comes from a creation myth in Taoism in which two deities fought until they destroyed the pillars uniting the earth and the heavens, which left the world broken and made it profane.
"Thunder is no longer the voice of God
// Lightning is no longer a moralizing missile // Knowledge is no longer shaped like a snake" an allusion to works by Carl Jung, where he describes how modern humans have essentially lost a primordial connection to natural events. Obviously it's also a theme seen in Christianity, where Eve is "tempted" with knowledge by the Devil in the form of a snake, by offering her the forbidden fruit, which some theorize were actually grapes.
"What's left of the alphabet is deep underground // In places without faces", I take it as meaning all the knowledge from past civilizations
"Everything we want will require unfathomable violence" is a reference to a (fake) quote attributed to US presidential candidate Marianne Williamson. [Caroline said: “I started thinking about how to re-harmonize myself, and my music, with the reality that there is a destructive side to everything, with the recognition that you are mortal, that you cannot save the world, that there are greater forces that you submit to.”]
this sounds like it couldve come straight out of an Engels text. amazing
she's serving greco-roman references again in this era. bunny is a rider showed us the labyrinth and the minotaur. this one seems like she's working for dionysus/bacchus, the god of vegetation and fruitfulness. not to mention the cornucopia too which is a symbol of abundance.
Absolutely. Feels like a poem to Dionysus about Dionysus himself. Its a god greatly reduced to hedonism even if he was the axis mundii of the universe itself according to the orphics. This song shows that Caroline truly understands what the god is about, not the pop culture impression that we can attribute to it's historical roots in the moral degeneracy of the Roman Empire
thanks for this!! :)
Wait, isn't Dionysus the Satan? The Horned God?
Beautiful notice!!!!
@@cahidijoyoraharjo7833 actually he's closer to Jesus. He was along with Apollo the maintainer of healthy civilization by keeping the spirit clean of ego and unhealthy attachment. The Jesus you're familiar with is actually modified. He was originally very feminine (very Dionysus) and or pudgy but Constantine while trying to enforce the superiority of Christianity decided to make jesus more appealing to the masses by making him appear more like Zeus/Jupiter. It's funny that the spread of such faith actually was done by a man who believed so little in it. That is also why the angels that are depicted in christian art are more like Greek gods like Eros rather than their original weird and scary imagery.
I love how organic this sounds, despite also being a tapestry of electronic sounds.
That is one of the special characteristics of Caroline and especially of her songs produced with Danny L Harle

She’s giving me elements of both Bjork and Cocteau Twins and I’m absolutely here for it
with a dash of Kate Bush.
the bath sequence is sooo possibly maybe
Yeah the twitchy drum programming really does remind you of Hunter by Björk
@@aikighost and just a dash of Imogen Heap
I’m obsessed with her. She’s beautiful and bizarre, and her music is so fascinating to me. At best I’d compare her to Kate Bush, but she’s very much her own unique thing.
Fancy seein' you here! I love to see this, a queen supporting a queen! 😍👑👑

There's always that one damn line that gets stuck in my head for every single Caroline song, and for this one, it's "sa-sa-sa-say somethingtomeh"
Absolutely. That and "Bihilleeeyawnns" get stuck in my head for the whole day

She lives in a dimension where future and past intersect and coexist in perfect harmony. This is a true artist.
Perfect comment.
shes pyscho and priceless , working the angels to death, digging our souls out of debt
that’s called the present , airhead.

This era is going to be lit
Definitely a new era. Changed everything up quite a,bit. I almost didn't recognize her

it kinda reads to me as bringing some chairlift inspirations, idk why, can't put my finger on it but something like this - and I like it.

It's funny, cause I did not dig at all this song live, but the studio version is fantastic. Maybe I'll like the live version more now.
@@enigmatic9118 same. I first heard this live and wasn't feeling it. But the studio version is a whole VIBE.
Something about this particular song is different than everything currently done. The video enhances the weirdness. It’s like a bubble from a parallel universe where the ancient greeks are still alive, reading glitchy poems to each other and singing in neon

Wow. In love with your writing
She has one of the most interesting voices in modern pop and there are actually a lot of complexities and subtle intricacies surrounding it. So beautiful.
Yeah after listening a million times I just noticed that subtle upturn at the end of “priceless” both times she sings it, and I have no idea how she does that
@@scifisyko I had to replay it when you said, and man that was so smooth! Amazing autotune or a very breathy yodel, anyways its a pleasure to hear it.
@@rycroftphilostratem3536 I don’t believe she uses autotune much at all, I remember reading that she practiced very hard to get her voice to sound like autotune when she wanted to
@@rycroftphilostratem3536 its not autotune she uses a lot of techniques like glottal placement, warped intonation, deliberate breathiness, etc. to make her voice sound the way it does. If you listen to her live or acoustic singing she sounds basically the same. She practiced and studied singing really hard to get that piercing, metallic quality to her voice. It often sounds like autotune or vocal processing.

I really like Bunny Is a Rider but I don't know if it's actually stronger than anything from Pang. Very curious what the next project will sound like.

The chords in this are seriously unlike anything else I’ve ever heard, this sounds LIKE something Kate Bush or Imogen Heap might do but I can’t think of another song that sounds anything like this! It’s SO unique!
also a bit like bjork's vespertine with the choir and beat
THE SENSUAL WORLD VIBES
I somehow get the familiarity from MJ's Strangers in Moscow. Nonetheless, this song is epic.
It kind of reminds me of Bat For Lashes- The Haunted Man
The beat sounds like Bjork, her voice reminds me of a mix of Imogen Heap / Enya & she looks like Moira from Overwatch lol
The 🐐
Hi Dorian! :)
I would love a Dorian x Caroline music collab
Where the billionaire feat of the century, Dorian?
I believe that her picking the grapes is a symbol of abundance. She then makes wine of it and serves this knowledge to the kids, new generation of people that can change our future. They are the ones that can make something good of all the progress (and also regress) that the wine symbolizes.
it's so cool. love how she just seems to be following her muse in every way, love the fashions and weird medieval/future aesthetic she keeps working, feels like a time traveler or some shit. I also like how this track and bunny is a rider the producer was like "alright I'm just gonna not have almost anything in the mid-high frequencies so your ridiculously perfect voice can be fully appreciated"
idk what this song is about but i like it
Worth noting she produces her tracks with co-producer Danny Harle. So it's her making those choices! Truly a legend
she's the producer
Perfektoo. Such Kate Bush-Sensual World vibes, musically-visually... loving it.
I can feel it too
I had that in mind too!
2:46 is the Kate-Bush-est imagery I’ve ever seen that wasn’t actually Kate Bush.
@@scifisyko also that look that she gives at 3:08 is so kb
@@marcr2661 I feel like she’s directly referenced Kate before - she was walking in a purple dress with two dogs in the video for Door and every KB fan screamed HOUNDS OF LOVE at the same time lol
I can't quite put my finger on WHY I like Caroline, but I remember reading a comment when I first discovered her years ago about how she sounds like a pop star from 2030 and while that's right around the corner, I can agree with the sentimentality that she sounds like she's from an era that has never existed and never will. This song so reminds me of 'Door', but its so wholly unique its not even a fair comparison. It just taps into something, for lack of a better word, primal. You want to exist in the world she's painting, but it feels like Gaiman's Mirrormask. There's something off about all of it yet it's incredibly enticing. Entrancing.
This makes total sense
Björk, David Sylvian, Kate Bush, Caroline Polachek, Tujiko Noriko, Peter Gabriel, Charli XCX, Robert Wyatt, Imogen Heap, Fiona Apple, Brian Wilson, Scott Walker, Gil Scott Heron, Nick Cave, Pj Harvey, David Bowie, Nick Drake, Eliott Smith, Robb Crow, Mark Linkous, I don't know just wanted to do a list of some of the greats singers/songwriters
Joanna Newsom
When she performed this live she mime picked grapes out of the air and then started to throw them into the crowd. It was very exciting and even more so to now know they were grapes! I assumed apples. I was so wrong!
Tfw you will never get to eat Caroline's spirit grapes 😭
This is probably one of the best songs I've heard in my life. There are so many unexpected turns but everything still flows so well together, its like a finely detailed layered painting. The chorus and bridge are so unique and the ending is so etherial. Through the complexity of this song everything still feels so blissful and floaty... Just beautiful
When I hear the song without the video, I can hear an invisible dialogue in my head.
This song really is just a mini album of it’s own.. what a ride. The strings at the end are so celestial ❤️🔥
This is a genius song
Agreed. The first listen for me is unreal.
I never was a big fan of her music until I heard this last night, I don't know why but all of sudden Caroline's music just clicked with me, like I'm listening to Pang again and I'm really loving it this time. There's so many intricate details in the songs that I didn't appreciate when I first heard it.
literally the exact same situation for me omg
Same. I didn’t dislike her but it didn’t grab me. But I kept listening because I felt like it would click and yes! I love how there is a common thread that seems to weave throughout all of pang. Similar chords or sounds or phrases repeated.
@@claireelizboncek yes! there are a few melodies that do repeat during several PANG's songs... she's really creative ! have you checked the extended version of The Gate? There are many melodies from other songs there too! (The humming at the beginning and ending was taken from So Hot You're Hurting my Feelings, for example).
It's easier to pick up on things you missed the first time around on the second or third listen.
Honestly Pang was an instant favorite pop album for me so can't relate lol
I’m getting “Teardrop” vibes from Massive Attack. Obsessed!
Big Massive Attack vibes! Having heard her other songs - including the one with Dido & Grimes - I have a feeling Caroline is a UK trip hop fan.
you have a good ear! the drum sounds in this song are sampled from teardrop
she brought out members of the National Children's Chorus for the outro when I saw her in September at The Greek Theatre in LA. it was transcendent.
You lucky duck, you. That sounds like magic
she recorded the same kids for the outro!
that really does sound incredible
It was a very intimate concert, redux vibes before COVID Delta variant hit Cali that summer.
Can't wait to play this a billion times
mom: how many times have you listened to that song already
me:
This song approaches Peter Gabriel / Brian Eno territory for me. It's a testament of how far Polachek has come as a songwriter and producer since graduating from University 16 years ago. That metallic guitar solo at 3:12 is a stroke of brilliance, as is the use of the Trinity School choir to close out the song and this great album. We know awards don't matter, but surely DIWTTIY deserves a Grammy nomination.
Brian Eno might be good choice as a producer for her.
Thank you! I’ve been wondering what the metallic guitar noise was!
Ha! Second comment in a two video span that links her style with either Peter Gabriel or Genesis. So I'm not alone in this crushin'.
My favourite crazy-lady singer
This sound is so fresh and crispy!
I haven't remembered such grounded pieces of production like this since the likes of Imogen Heap, Cocteau Twins, Kate Bush, ethereal and multicultural influenced vibes too. So gorgeous. Caroline really is one a kind, digging herself into the grooves of a genre all her own.
reminds me of the music in the 90s
Björk ? But yeah it's been a while ^^ and to be fair pre-date Imogen Heap. If you get the chance listen to Tujiko Noriko, a click'n'cut glitch pop originator in her own right
IMOGEEENNNNNNNNNNN 4 EVER
I would also suggest BANKS and FKA twigs, if you're interested in Caroline. I actually just discovered Caroline (I know, I'm mad it took me this long), but have been fans of the latter for a while, and pick up on a lot of the truly awe inspiring energy here as I do with them.

Billions Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Psycho, priceless
Good in a crisis
Working the angles
Oh whoa, Billions!

Under the tables
Tangled in cables
Oh whoa, Billions!

Ah, ah
Say, say, say, say something to me (Ahh)
Ah, ah
Say, say, say, say something to me (Ahh)

Body upgraded
But it's dead on arrival
Oh whoa oh, Billions
Twisted, manic
Cornucopeiac, yeah
My cup overfloweth
Oh whoa, Billions!

I never felt so close to you
I never felt so...
I never felt so close to you

Cupcakke after completing her literature degree:
I’m completely biased and blinded for her, but it’s very uncommon for an artist to check so many boxes after a debut album for me. Caroline was in the industry much much longer, but I think this is what she always wanted and. it. shows. First of all, the music is so captivating, for me PANG is a complete masterpiece, the songs are all on the same level. What is interesting, I usually don’t listen to minimalistic music, tend to like oversaturation of sounds, even if it’s PC Music. Secondly, the visuals are just on point - and they don’t require a big artist’s budget, still. Even though she’s always avant-garde, she’s serving many sides of it and the best thing is - you could easily promote PANG with BIAR or Billions (as a MV). Thirdly, back to her music, there’s no Caroline Polachek’s music without her voice. Many songs from plenty of artist I was able to listen to purely for the instrumentals (let’s say Beg for you by Charli gives me this right now). The way Caroline shapes her vocals influences her songs completely. The best example is the ending of Sunset (live version) and the pure chills that it gives me and it’s all because of the vocals. Then, the photoshoots - for me they are just a great afterthought to the music. Always artsy, always glossy and simulated, but it really satisfies the eye and they are not overdone, you can always tell Caroline knows what aesthetic she’s about. Finally, her public personality, which only proves how much she knows about the industry and work she has put to become fluent in sound. You could find an interview where she mentions her inspirations and musical interests, not to mention her Spotify playlist that changes every now and then. I remember one IG story where she said that mastering many softwares on a level that can help communicate with other producers/artist is helpful. I am so done with artists being „just be who you are” or „believe in yourself”, we already know it’s aloof - and I appreciate a practical advice. Overall I really think Caroline Polachek is exceptional in the today’s musical environment. I’m aware there are many people behind all of her work, but somehow she’s distinct enough about her vision those people are able to create something coherent and beyond. You can tell I admire Caroline pretty much 🤠
😭 this is beautiful, I agree with this 100% thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Her Ramona Lisa album is great if you haven't heard it. Her high crow clips the laptop microphone in a couple parts on there. (It was all recorded onto a laptop remotely) It's a happy accident. That high crow simular to the last chorus in I Belong In Your In Your Arms on Chairlift's Moth record. She uses a few of her trademark colors on the song and introduces a matured, longing falsetto I haven't heard before from her.
PC music?

This new project is gonna be another masterpiece.
The text at the end is a paraphrasing of a section of Carl Jung's 'Man and His Symbols'.
He talks about the loss of religious modes and its effects on our psyches. "Man feels himself isolated in the cosmos... Thunder is no longer the voice of an angry god, nor is lightening his avenging missile.."
Not sure if the second part is from something else.

“Here’s a PEARL OF THE OYSTER” has to be a Sophie reference to her album The Oil of Every Pearl’s Uninsides. They kinda ran in the same circles with Charlie XCX and other artists. I’m curious if it is a reference and they knew each other.
possible! considering that i believe, one of the songs on her lates album, is dedicated for sophie
It's actually "He's a pearl, I'm the oyster" so I don't think it's a reference to Sophie but like someone else said "I Believe" is actually dedicated to her
@@arcadia14 I actually looked it up again because usually if I reference lyrics, I look them up to make sure I got them correct.
Three different sites have it listed three different ways:
“He's a pearl, I'm the oyster
Oh, billions”
“Here’s a pearl, I'm the oyster
Oh, billions”
“Here’s a pearl of the oyster
Oh, billions”
So I’m not really sure which it is now I do think any lyric, just mentioning pearls and oysters is enough to guess that she’s referencing Sophie. They seemed to run in the same circles.
I have to look up “I Believe” lyrics. Thanks for pointing out.
