    I think one great thing about the good place is how it subverts the "hell is other people" maxim by Sartre. They were placed there by Michael, who was convinced hell would be other people and they would torture each other. But instead, they helped each other, making each other better. They saved each other. Hell can be other people, but just as often, other people can save us from our own hell.

    The best part about the ending is that at the end, evry character became what they were "perceived" in season 1
    Tahani became an actual humanitarian and helped people even in the afterlife
    Jason became an actual monk, in his silence while waiting for Janet to come back to "the door"
    Chidi became an actual accomplished philosopher that "found" his answer
    Finally, Eleanor became the "Fake Eleanor" that helped the world by reaching out to other unfortunate souls and gave them a chance in (after) life

I asked him, "Can I commit suicide in the afterlife?" Because I never wanted to live forever. It made everything feel so meaningless. The 'Door' in season 4 felt like it resonated with that notion my teenage brain was tapping into - infinite amounts of anything makes that thing worthless. That Death makes life worthwhile.

  • @sweesbees
    @sweesbees Před 3 lety +625

    i was watching the good place intermittently when i was dealing with a huge amount of death anxiety. i had that before, but it was always about when i would die. this time around, it was anxiety over the fact that i _will_ die. i kept fearing the idea of non-existence because existing is all my brain can comprehend.
    during that time i was on a road trip with friends and the topic came around to what happened when we die. our friend said nothing happens, and you stop existing. what was interesting is we both had the same idea, but she saw it as a comfort, while i was plagued with fear. it was good to talk about though, as that was the first time i was really able to get it off my chest.
    sometime after that, i reached the final few episodes and it suddenly threw a wrench in my fears. i realised that if i didn’t die, i would exist forever, which would frankly be terrible. so i’m basically now dealing with the biggest catch-22 ever.
    if i had it my way, i would love an afterlife of a hundred or thousand years (or bearimys, as it were) of so until i finally reach that calm and pass on into non-existence with no regrets. but in case that’s not how it goes, i must learn to reach that nirvana and acceptance before my wave returns to the ocean.
    and this show helped. i can say that for certain.

      the way I think about it is that before I came into being, there was nothing, so I skipped straight into being alive. After I die there will either be an afterlife, or it will be nothing, and I will skip straight into doing something else. What if some super civilization comes around in a billion years and finds a way to revive everyone? for me, no time will have passed, other than maybe a few minutes while I'm dying. Or maybe it will be way more than a billion years, maybe this universe will die, and then through some unimaginable means another universe comes about with new rules, and somehow I come into being there? After all, there is LITERALLY INFINITE TIME ahead of my death for something to come out of left field and bring me back, or have me inhabit a new body, or anything else I couldn't imagine.

She has a job that she does well but is never respected for it, She's treated worse because of her gender, she's gaslight, she's blamed and punished for someone else's misdeeds and is just generally bullied. Not to mention being looked down upon for being a millenial something we both had no control over and yet are still judged on. That's me. I dealt with workplace bullying, shitty coworkers in multiple jobs and never feeling respected or valued for work I did. that just hit home for me.

    This one video specifically is the sole reason I decided to watch the good place. I was intrigued and did trust the opinion of Quinton. I never went to watch the spoilers as to not ruin the show for myself. every season that went by I would watch a bit more of this video. After season 3 however, I couldn't watch the next season, for the longest time Netflix didn't have the last season. And I was honestly tempted to just watch the last part of this video and get it over with. But I didn't, I got this far going blind, I might as well finish it blind. And my patience paid off as Netflix recently added the last required season. Leaving me able to finish this show once and for all, and this video as well. I do not regret watching this show, It was far better than I would have initially anticipated, So I just want to say Thank you for making this video, and Introducing me to this Show, Its something I am truly grateful for, truly.

Eleanore and Tahani are acknowledged as selfish, and Jason is dumb, but the show lets Chidi off the hook for not immediately questioning the morality of this setup.
