Patrick is a real person, like you said not perfect. His character got so much hate when this came out but people are so judgemental. The point of this wonderful show is the naturalistic style. I adore it and it only gets better 😊

Desagree we know a bunch a character that are not perfect like but are better than Patrick. The writers screwed Patrick he is the protagonist if the public don't like the protagonist is a high chance to get cancelled that what is happened. Fleabag have a unperfected and very egoists protagonist but she is charismatic enough and very well written that was a huge success

I love this episode. It’s like a Patrick and Richie short film. Just their day together and none of the other characters. I haven’t seen that done often in other shows.
It's in great episodes like this that you realize what a difference it makes to have a real film director like Andrew Haigh at the helm for a TV series. Even though he didn't write and/or direct every episode of Looking, you can definitely feel his positive influence throughout. As in his debut feature Weekend, and the later 45 Years and Lean On Pete, we see how wonderful he is with seemingly casual situations yielding real insight into the characters. Am currently (October 2023) waiting impatiently for his newest film, All Of Us Strangers!

As a straight middle aged woman i am not ashamed to say, that one scene is the sexiest thing ever recorded. Plus: Jonathan Groff having a self admitted real life crush on Raul Castillo sure didn't hurt their on screen chemistry.

I think the fact that you two are polar opposites is what makes your channel so good! I love to watch Josh’s face cringe while Alex is so down for whatever is going on…it’s hilarious. You two make for great content because we get to see both sides of the subject matter.
I always felt like the criticism of this show wasn't justified. People would complain when Patrick would say something ignorant that it was sending a bad message, but what I also love about this show is that whenever Patrick, or any of the characters for that matter, are having one of their "not so perfect" moments, there's often someone else there to educate or call them out on it. It allowed them to be real, complex, people that are in the middle of their journey that are constantly growning and learning, without sacrificing the real message. I think people just got so caught up in the fact that the main characters often do and say things that weren't correct that they took that as the message and considered the show to be problematic. You can have a charater be problematic at times without that being the message the show is trying to convey. In fact, it's often the opposite. For instance, in the beginning, Patrick fetishizes Ritchie for being Latino and stereotypes him (there was a lot of hate over this in particular when the first few episodes aired) but he is called out on it by Ritchie and the people around him, and he grows from the experience. The message there was very much that this type of attitude and behavior is unacceptable, it just wasn't coming from the main character we're meant to relate to, so it was missed by many.
I hope you guys watch the movie as well when you finish the series. It's great!
Nah almost all the character but Murray's were flawed in a significant way and worked on it. They just made Patrick particularly unpleasant and then forced you to spend the most time with him. There are just so many critically and commercially successful shows with flawed protags that I think that attributing the dislike for Patrick as the audience not understanding that he was flawed is a bad take. People absolutely love flawed protags and antiheros, but Patrick was just not a compelling flawed character. As a fun exercise I went through lists of the best TV from the 2010s and found no shortage of beloved characters who are worse than Patrick many, many, many times over.
I'm guessing the writers just thought they'd have more time to work on Patrick and make all the screen time pay off somehow, but obviously that didn't get to happen lol.
Yes been waiting for this! This is my favorite episode of the whole show including the movie. I love when shows only focus on two characters and follows them around for a little day in a life.
I really liked the show and was disappointed when it was canceled. But at least they made the movie afterward.
Cringe? I think not! A hot naked man in bed playing guitar and singing slightly off-key is hot. I may have showered, got dressed brushed my teeth but if I see that happening, I'll be taking my clothes off. Idc if that makes me late for work, it'll be worth it.

I wasnt on team Ritchie @ the beginning of the show, but their day date got me on his corner. Their conversations weren't forced, they were funny, and a little bit of sexy time to seal the deal for me.
This is by far my favorite episode of Looking in the entire series, just a beautiful look into what “normal” gay life is like, what gay dating is like, it was so expertly written. I think it didn’t go well when it originally aired because it’s very critical of a specific type of gay personality on purpose and people felt a little attacked lol but like you said we’ve all been there no shame in that just don’t stay there and grow you know. Also team Richie

And at the time many people thought it was actually promoting a certain type of gay life (Patrick's naive and biased views). Many millennials rejected it because they felt it was a privileged view without seeing the critique of the privileged view.
That’s what I miss about dating the most: all day dates, getting to know eachother…before the anxiety and overthinking kicks in (sighsssss) eye roll

How many show do that? Just allow time and leisure to see not much happen yet so much revealed. When this came out I had friends who said this episode was boring, yet to me it is gorgeous and one of the two best episodes of the series

Another person here for whom this episode is probably my favorite of the series, though I also liked much of season two more than season one. It’s very much an episode about character, and that kind of episode always appeals to me.
The other Day with Richie episode from season 2 may be my favorite. But both are amazing

I think part of the charming entertainment is that the CZcams and patreon experiences are so different. CZcams has to be edited down to meet the limits, but the patreon eps are allowed to be long form and able to breathe. Know what I mean?

Sometimes it's VERY obvious that you two, Alex at least, grew up in a very different generation and seems to expect all the gays to be perfectly educated and forgets that when a show is set in a different time, or came out at a different time, it's reflective of THAT TIME... not modern time. Just because something is bad on a show, doesn't mean it's bad representation... it's just good/accurate representation of that time. Things were very different even just 10 years ago for the gay community, and shows of the time reflect that. You can't compare them to today's standards and knowledge and understanding of things like HIV and gay people being naïve and uneducated. NONE OF US WERE. We never had education, and we also never had the internet!! We grew up with 0 guidance and basically 0 people we could go to for support, at least, not anyone who would be qualified or even educated on how to help gay teens. Being gay was still very "wrong" in society not that long ago. I can only imagine what you'd think if you ever got around to watching Queer As Folk. What different times that was! And that show was super progressive at the time.

At the time people complained that it was a story of a privileged White gay guy. I think folks missed the critique and illumination of that privilege. It questions the naivety of privilege and a lot of folks missed that in their outrage. Interesting thing is that while much of the community rejected it at the time, I know many who have revisited it and changed their opinions
This is one of the best episodes in season 1. Patrick is pretty ignorant and makes stupid decisions sometimes. I think that's why this show didn't really catch on at the time. People disliked the characters, and the show wasn't soapy enough to keep people hooked to see what outrageous thing they did next (think of Brian from the USA Queer as Folk for a successful example of that). Plus, lots of people thought it was weird that it was all male gay characters and no women. As a Sapphic, I missed the queer ladies. Still, Richie is the best. I love him.

The series was well receive critically. Ratings wise it just wasn’t there, got compared to QAF which was such a heightened version of queer life, not untrue just focused on the scene and not life. This tried to be more balanced and was often compared to “Girls” also on HBO.
