There was a guy who made these with a 3. 5 Briggs Stratton motor and sold them back in the 80's, cheap TV generator.

That would be a good idea, a spring loaded tensioner to keep belt from bouncing up n down.
Can you explain the two wires coming off the alternator more. I get the wire to the starter. But I wanted more info on the other wired and what to wire them to

Almost 400 USD for a small alternator, a few chunks of machined aluminum and a few brackets.
I wonder how much they’re profiting on this, it has to be more than 50%. I feel grateful that I have a lathe and a mill. I can build my own.
If I'd seen your excellent Predator Engine Build video, might have taken a different route; built a Briggs using Performance V-Twin parts from Al Hodge, flew it for 120 hours but cast cam broke so reinforced the cam, sold it and moved on to a bigger liquid cooled ATV motor. What's impressive is the way you speed up the boring bits to keep it sharp and interesting, shows good video use for presenting tech matters. Couple of thoughts:- it is possible to mill out the weights from the flywheel leaving the ignition and generation magnets and a balance weight opposite, and sticking with the stock regulator, and is that just as light and simpler than going alloy flywheel and adding an alternator? Also I found the change to billet rods did change the engine crank balance, is it worth re-balancing the Predator afterwards? If your build gives 32hp it has big potential, as watching your work it's plain you use good techniques and skill, and there's a market for such a unit in the UK.
That's the way I do battery cables too!
Hopefully 40 amps will be enough for the lights and the electric power steering. Hopefully this whole thing will be done by the new year.

I’ve got the same basic set up but I’m using a harbor freight 212cc and an 84 Chevy alternator with a deep cycle battery and 1200w inverter all mounted to a little cart I built so I rarely have to pick it up. It’s been my handy little generator for about 3-4 years. I mostly use it to run power tools but the power went out a few times and I ran my fridge off of it. It could use a better inverter but it does the job.
How did you get the alternator to charge correctly? I have a 420cc predator on a hammerhead twister and I put a 1 wire alternator on it from a 9 inch pulley on motor shaft and 2.5 inch pulley on alternator and can't get but a couple volts to come off the alternator even at high rpms.
Can this be installed on other 600-900cc engines such as Honda GX's, Briggs and Stratton or whatever?
Just an idea, will this have enough power to hold an 12 inch sub with 650 amp? Including radio and speakers?

not really. you can put a better charge coil on them, but you're still going to be barely putting out any juice. they are really only meant to top off a small lawn tractor battery.
It may be possible to come up with something from the shaft side
You'd have to strip the stator from Kholer engine, can't quite remember which one. You'll need the flywheel and stator coils, plus a rectifier/regulator to convert from AC to DC and regulate it to 12-14 volts.
Nice install but but 4ga wire is a bit overkill if you already have it around cool but 8ga would be more than enough it has a continuous ratings 55A which for a 40A alternator is plenty

So how much of the weight you saved with a billet flywheel goes back on when you install this?.

I’m not sure.. but I think the pulley ratio should be 3:1 That bigger pulley looks to small.

The alternator will regulate to whatever you need from it....and your battery/wiring can take....

So I understand the 4 gauge wire and the red small gauge wire to a switched hot. But did he say the yellow one goes to an alternator fault lock? What even is that and is it mandatory or optional?

Why not just get higher output charging coil for a honda gx660 and bolt it on , thats what i did you can get a 17 amp or 27 amp
Can you install this kit on a Honda GX340 and GX390 electric start gas motor... I'm installing a GX390 on a UTV to run LED lights , USB port , cigarette lighter , wench , windshield wipers and a radio while charging my battery... It would give me plenty of charging power to run everything , only if I can install on my gx390...

I have searched, is there any company making a similar kit or plans for a DIY alternator kit for a 420.
I am running a mud motor on my jon boat with a Predator 420. With electric start, lights, live well pump, as well as a second battery for my trolling motor, I would really like a way to keep my batteries charged. I may end up fabricating my own DIY kit but if someone else has already done the brain work that make things easier.

Ive honestly been thinking about using a SBC water pump pulley bolted on the flywheel with the main nut and then just cut the fan housing
@@Entertainment_Enterprise I am in my mind working through setting everything up to use a multi rib belt (I have reasons). I have talked with a machinist friend about an adapter that would attach to the flywheel/fan and then allow a pulley to be mounted to it.
The mount for the alternator would be fairly simple. A reinforce, double shear mount at the pivot bolt and then a slotted arm for the tension adjustment bolt.
I don't thing a SBC alternator would be the best choice. A smaller more efficient and lighter weight alternator would be better but I will need to dive into some part number listings to figure out that. I would pick a common part number.

This sucks! I wanted an alternator for my 22hp predator but I have a shaft that hooks on the back to power the hydro transmission. Is there any other options?
What is the size of the pully? How can the crankshaft be held without you tool?

No.
The anchor for the alternator adjustment curved bracket is anchored to the bolts holding the electric start on the motor....so it's still there...key start still works...

Soon as you rip off the stock flywheel and charging coils from the 670 to install a billet flywheel, you lose all ability to run lights, charge the battery and any other electronic accessories. This makes it so there no compromises.

Will this setup work on 708 vertical shaft ? I replaced the kawasaki with a predator and the low output from the stator won't charge the battery.
You'll want to avoid solder on any kind of mobile installation. The joint is too ridged and will eventually fail due to vibration. A crimp and heat shrink is actually a better connection for that application.

According to Performance 670, it's a Kubota alternator, not a GM.
It may be cheaper going with Kabota but it’s a denso alternator for sure. I spent 2 days looking for that same thing for a customer. Small body alternator.
@@Ratkill9000 kubota does not make alternators. most japanese alternators are made by nippondenso and that is where kubota gets their alternators from.

Hey Red Beard - Anything regarding the new DM 23HPE. the engines are similar, but not 100 exact (of course). I am considering this engine. Any preference between the predator and DM?
What alternator is it based on, like could you put a high output alt on? 40 amps is a bit low for some applications, like if you wanted a legit sound system on your 670 swap 40 amp wouldn't cut it lol. Guess it dont matter cuz with my job aint buying that anytime soon :/

I clicked the link for the alt kit, but it appears to be either out of stock or no longer available. But I have a questiom regarding alternators. I'm fully aware you modify your engines. I'm doing a repowering of a Gehl 2600 skid loader. Wouldn't the alternator rob horsepower? I have the room for a kit. But if it robs even 5 horsepower, it isn't feasible. Just a question.

It might. This alternator is a Kubota off like a V2203 di or idi. They might have a similar case size. But I'd call up Performance 670 and ask. Kind of surprised they did this and not a more common GM Delco 10si or 12si.

Redbeard the alternator the link sends you to is a 1 wire alternator it only needs the big battery wire connected not the small two ones the description looks like they have put a self exciting regulator in it......
Wondering if this would fit on a duromax 18hp or if they make a separate kit
