We’re on the same journey, only I grew up Christian and became agnostic/atheist in college. I am continually called to Islam, at all times throughout my life I’ve had moments of clarity from Islam without knowing anything about it but I finally just felt compelled by the resilience, dignity and unshakable faith of the Palestinians in their fight against apartheid to learn about Islam and read the Quran for the first time. I appreciate how respectful you are talking about Quran and Islam. I would love to hear your thoughts throughout your process of reading it. Take your time with it and do not rush reading it. I don't know if this is a good translation or not because I only read Quran in Arabic but I hope it is. A lot of stories you already know will be mentioned in it: the creation, Moses, Jesus and Marry, Noah and more but they are in what we believe the real events that happened without no distortion/ rewriting.

The Abdel Haleem translation is a very balanced translation, a good choice for this sort of project. I recommend using a Quranic exegesis (tafsir) like Ibn Kathir for the parts that are difficult to understand without context and explanation. May Allah bless you immensely.

I have read it twice through in different translations
The first was a very readable version
the second had many many footnotes and was a harder read
(I get distracted by footnotes and end up going down rabbit holes)
The second time I did it in a disciplined way
reading a thirtieth of the Qu'ran per day.
I was told this is what devote Muslims do during Ramadan.
The ordering of the Surahs is from longest to shortest
so the first Surah is the longest.
My feeling about the Qu'ran is that it is not dissimilar to
prophets in the Hebrew Scriptures.

Hey, I appreciate how seriously you're taking this. To answer your question, the Qur'an does mention/acknowledge the Torah (called the Taurat) and the Bible (called the Injil), albeit with some caveats. I have a copy of that same translation, and I must say it's written in quite an accessible manner. Lastly, I would suggest, if you can, to read the exegesis (aka the Tafsir) of the some of the chapters to help you understand the context in which they were revealed.
I believe that whoever is looking for the truth and seeking knowledge to know his creator, The creator will surely lead him to the truth. This verse brings tears to my eyes: [Quran 29:69] As for those who strive for us, We will surely guide them along Our Way. And Allah is certainly with the good-doers.

You dont need to do wudhu if its the translation. Only if it's the arabic you have to do ablution. But appreciate that you respect it.

If your English vocabulary is good, I highly recommend you use Dr. Mustafa Khatab's The Clear Quran; As an Arab who often has to quote the Quran in English for my non-arabic-speaking friends, this translation is nearly impeccable.
Quite a big project your taking on here! Big respect - I'd reccomend reading the English quran in conjunction with no god but God by reza Aslan, Aslan gives a great overview on the context the Quran was revealed in, may help you understand the overall history better! Good luck!

You may also want to check an older text as well which tries to capture the music of the original. The newer ones are a little flat in that regard from my experience.

I've been watching your channel for forever and I didn't realize you were Jewish! I've never read the Quran either so I will be interested to see your progress and thoughts. I would totally be interested in other religious scriptural content too. I was raised Christian and our pastor had a PhD in history so I was always fascinated by his sermons where he would analyze the text (as opposed to most churches whose focus seems to be broad platitudes with no real content, but that's a rant for another day...)
I would recommend you to read the translation of Quran called The Clear Quran by Mustafa Khattab
When reading the Quran, read it with a neutral aspect, not expecting it to be violent or peaceful.
If there is anything I can suggest is to read it , you'll be suprised how precise it can talk to you , it will answer your internal questions at the moment they come when you're reading !
Hello, I’d also recommend you to consult The Study Quran by Seyyed Hossain Nasr, his translation of Quran has concise details that further expand the historical context of Quran of the things discussed in it as well. That is actually a book that contains many Shia sources, I would suggest for him to first follow the Quran as it was delivered to the Prophet (PBUP) and then if he wants to join a sect of Islam he may. One may argue that Shia is not a sect and is the real Islam, then ok 85% of the Muslims (1.6 bullion) are following the non real Islam and the Shias are following the real Islam, but what if the majority of those that are interested in Islam and wants to read only that which the majority follows then that person should be made aware of any content shared with him is being followed by the minority or majority.

"And if you obey (follow) most of who (is) in the earth, they misguide you from God`s way/path , that they follow except the assumption/suspicion , and that they (are) except lying/speculating"

"And most of them follow not except assumption. Indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of what they do."
There are numerous verses in the Quran clearly indicating and stating that the majority of people will not be on the right path. If you use "majority" as an argument, you should be a Christian.
Properly investigate both sunni and shia as if you entered Islam yesterday, and make sure you do so with an open mind. You have to properly educated yourself by reading shia arguments from a shia-perspective, and not misconception and lies from sunnies until you can judge and advise people from their own research.
The truth has been clearly separated from falsehood, never stand in the way of research. If you are so sure about sunni arguments there should be no problem what so ever to read and educate yourself on what shia arguments are.
Why do you think there are NO shia-Muslims that warns against reading sunni sources?

Yes abdulhalims translation is pretty accurate, another one is mustafa khatab’s
I know this is an old video but I think Quran translation by Dr. Mustafa Khattab is a better choice since it contains explanation to verses, giving perspective on how the Prophet taught the Quran to his closest companion. That's the thing you see. Muslim doesn't interpret the Quran through their own understanding. It always goes back to how the Prophet taught the companions and how they understood the Quran.
If you're interested in diving deeper into the actual context, you need to read the "Tafsir", which explanation of the Quran, backed by hadith. A famous one would be [Tafsir ibn Kathir] by [Abu al-Fida’ Imad ad-Din Isma'il ibn Umar ibn Kathir al-Qurashi al-Damishq] or known as... Well, Ibn Kathir.
Tafsir Ibn Kathir is very long. Easily over 10 times the size of the translation that you have on your hand.
I"d also be intereested in hearing your thoughts on the Masnavi by Rumi, it is sort of like to Islam and the Quran what Paradise Lost by John Milton is to Christianity and the Bible

Read (studied) the Koran cover to cover. I found it repetitive and very similar to the Doctrines and Covenants of the LDS faith (problem arises, prophet needs an answer, God delivers answer that primarily coincides with benefit to prophet). There were a lot of sites that explained the more difficult passages but explanations/enforcement for most of those varied somewhat depending on whose site I checked.
I just want to know, did the book you read still have the Arabic in it? because what I know is, you cannot make a book about quran or translation about quran without the original Arabic in it. I recommended you to ask local mosque because maybe I was wrong

Bro I have a suggestion, please watch CZcams videos about Quran (Audio recitation with synced transliteration) it’s all over. For example, “the spider Quran recitation” “ta-ha Quran recitation” to name two. It’s a completely different way of experiencing the Quran. Quran comes from the 3 letter root q-r-a (to read) and it means recitation. You are supposed to hear it, more than you are supposed to read it.

You aint gonna learn much about the prophet muhammad from the quran. His name only mentions 4 times (by name, not by commentary) in the quran anyway.
You would love to read the biography of the prophet muhammad (peace be upon him) first. Getting to know of what kind of person he is.
I would suggest you "Muhammad a Biography of the Prophet" by karen amstrong (she is still non muslim as i remember).
And the one by martin lings "Muhammad his life based on the earliest sources" (he is a muslim).
As i understand, we do have the study of "the interpretation of the quran". But thats in different section/different book.
What you have is the english translation of the quran. There might be some commentary in it tho.
And many english speakers say that the "clear quran" from dr. Mustafa Khattab is the best english translation so far.
Cuz, he is somebody who has experienced both arabic and english languages (Canadian-Egyptian).
I'm curious if you're going to genuinely critique the Quran as a work of literature regardless of its holy status, or out of some kind of respect not say anything harsh. Which I understand, it's just when I started reading it I found things that were nice of course and things that were problematic (especially chapter 4) and repetitive (concerning hell). And as a former Muslim reading the Quran made me feel disconnected from God because of the aggression depicted, and somewhat negligence with the versus about women. But anyways hope you find some enjoyment in reading it.
You would be right in saying that there's a lot of flexibility in interpreting the Qur'an. Instead of explaining why, let me show you an example.
Once, 'Umar ibn Khattab (the second Caliph of Sunni İslam) came to a companion who was known for his ability to judge the meaning of a surah. I think this must be the time after Prophet Muhammad SAW died, but I have no idea whether this was during his time as a Caliph or before it. He asked this companion, "I found this passage from the Qur'an, take a look at this. 'Whosoever hurts a Muslim...', does this apply to me?"
The companion asked 'Umar what could he possibly meant, since 'Umar was after all one of the Companions of Muhammad SAW who were the closest to him, by blood and by association. 'Umar said "I hurt Muslims. Sometimes I hit them, I get angry at them. I worry that this applies to me and I would get the punishment that I deserve."
The companion smiled, and said "O 'Umar! You are but a shepherd to your flock. Sometimes the shepherd must firmly guide the sheep so they don't go the wrong way."
Actually, the New Testament is Jewish Christianity it is the Jewish community Jesus came to and chose the 12 disciples. He spent his time talking about the Kingdom and the things to come for mankind. He said that those who believe would receive the Holy Spirit to give proof of his time here on earth and to teach and guide them.
dIt would have been good to start the Journey on the Bible and then move to the Quran to see what the major differences are and to also read the History of the Quran because Muhammed wanted the Jews to help him form a religion, he really wanted the Jews to do it. He looked to them highly as a people of God So he learned a lot from their religion. He got mad at the Jews, cause they said no.
The Early Muslims respected the Tanakh and Bible and stated it was accurate but it was weird because they made it to go against the Bible and Torah. But all this is out there in the history of Muhammed and in the Quran as well.
Read the hadiths as well, should make a video comparing the hadiths to Quran, sahih Al Bukhari is a good place to start. We're all gonna die, need to study religion carefully, and make sure we haven't missed anything. Before we go 😢😅😅

Be sure to talk to a Shia Muslim expert in Iran about the Shia Islam because I am a Shia myself And I accepted this religion because it has worked much better in defending itself and it's more reasonable and no one from other branches of Islam has been able to reject this religion with a logical reason.
there is also a book called Nights of Peshawar, which is in Farsi, and I don't know if its English translation is available or not.
In this book, which is actually a collection of dialogues between a Shia scholar and Sunni elders, Sultan al-Waazin Shirazi defends Shia with the Quran and Sunni sources of hadith.

yes, the old testament and new testament are seen as holy books by islam but it also claims that they've been edited and corrupte by humans but also that it's not all bad, words of God are still there so learn from the bibel and thorah what you can't find in the Quran or so say many branches of islam, so in a way it's the last testament as it claims to be the final and last message from God to Humanity.

People left islam because, so many people who teach islam is not really understand what they preach.
They just see islam as the things that written in quran and hadist, without the proper interpretion based on the actual circumstances during rasulullah time.
These people trapped in some kind of sect in islam. They think they have the truth, so they separate theirself from other muslims.
So they prohibit music, tahlil.
They also think that burqa (covering face) is an obligation for women, beard is obligation for men, etc etc.
This makes people stressed out. And some leave islam.
Very much appreciate the respectful video! If you want to read the chapters out of order, these are some of my favourites: Surah Yusuf (Chapter 12). Surah Maryam (Chapter 19), Surah ad-Duha (Chapter 93 ... which I'm sure is a lot of Muslims' favourite).

I also want to recommend two other translations of the Quran one is Message of the Quran by Asad. The other is fairly recent The Study Quran by Seyed Hussein Nasr. Both fantastic translations

What I know about the Quran, it affirms Jesus as a sinless person. So everything he said was the truth. Therefore if anything goes against what Jesus said, it is a lie. Keep that in mind when reading the Quran.

the quran never said hit the women ! its actualy the result of a mistranslation of the verse in arabic
(ضربوهنi) in wich the arabic verbe (ضربi) has been used ! it comes from the verbe ( ضرب) wich doesnt mean hit or kick and has nothing to do with violence !
the verb ( ضرب = the create distance , create space , distinguish , separate , create a gap , cut the link ...)
for example the verse saying و اضربوا في الأرض = to create a distance between you and your homeland by wondering the earth or simply say explore earth !
another example ضرب المحارب عنق عدوه = the warrior created space or a gap between the head and the body of his enemy by detatchement from the neck or simply say cutted his neck !
here comes another one ضرب الناس به المثل = the people putted one of them in a league of his own or simply say made him distingtive from the rest by using him as an example or a role model like when you say "be brave like william wallace" or when you say " he takes from the rich to feed the poor like robin hood"
the verbe ( ضربi = to stop doing or stop maintening something )
for example اضرب الناس عن العمل = the people didnt work by making a strike (in french : grève)
so that verse about hiting women is false and wrong !
the true meaning is to make space or distance or take some time out between you and your wife !
do you understand now ? this is why we keep saying the best way to understand quran ( القرآن ) is by learning arabic !
