The numbers 9 and 10 are historically the most desired numbers in football (8 is popular as well for midfielders), 9 is the goal scorer and 10 is the creator. Young CR7 made 7 one of those iconic numbers. Growing up, all of the really skilful and creative players that I played with wanted the number 7 because of Ronaldo. Before if you were the chief creator, you’d want to wear the number 10, now it’s either or. That’s how influential Ronaldo is. Everyone copied Ronaldo, we bought his boots, copied his skills, copied his free kick stance and run up, everything.

I agree with the sentiment, but the number 7 was already iconic from David Beckham in United alone, it was seen as a big deal at the time when Ferguson gave Ronaldo that shirt immediately. He obviously knew a baller when he saw one.

Not gonna lie, Ronaldo was a far more lethal goal scorer at Madrid, but his dribbling at United was something else, one of the scariest counter attack players ever at that age. FTR I am actually a Liverpool fan, and ....lets just say our club and their club , don't get on very well hahaha (we are each others main rivals) but even I have to admit Ronaldo was absolutely terrifying at Man U. I think in a way more terrifying than what he became at Real Madird (although at Real he become a central goal Machine) the last 2 years at United and the first 2 or 3 at Real he was just the most lethal Wing Forward the world had seen, Messi being the other major contender
Its probably between those 2 specifically for Wing Forwards Mo Salah is close but not quite, Luis Ronaldo was a central Striker, Ronaldinho was a no10/Attacking midfielder, same with Maradona, Henry was more like what CR7 became, etc etc,
This is also why the GOAT debate is kind of silly Romario gets forgotten and he might be the most lethal finisher the world has ever seen, but both Messi and CR7 are better all round players, Baggio too, unreal ability, gets forgotten, best I have seen at taking it around the keeper, between him and Romario
For me the GOAT is the first player I would pick in my all time 11, and that depends for each person on the formation they would chose, but for me the first name I would pick would actually not be CR7 or Messi, it would be Diego Maradona. Better captain than both, better passer than both, more of a team player than both, better tackler than both, almost as illusive as Messi, same long distance shooting as CR7, and more ability to control the middle of the field than any other player I have seen, and in an all time 11 I would have a Messi or CR7 as wing forwards, but my main playmaker would be Diego

This CR7 only wanted to play and had the street ball mentality where he wants to do fanciful moves, score goals and humiliate players. But he got caught out with teams double and triple teaming him. Only when he picked up the fact that he can still make an impact by drawing out opposing team players with his direct play and involving his team mates did he improve significantly. In fact, it was well known, the senior players at Man Utd rip him in training week in week out for showboating too much with little output on goals, assist or key passes. Check any of Rio's vids and he'll say they kicked young CR7 in training just to wind him up and make him learn about the physicality of the league as well as learning when to make key passes especially when he drew 2-3 players in.
Of course, his talent, hunger and desire was what made him world class. But at the same time, he also begin to understand the tactical aspect of his game and the impact his direct play can do. 2007-2008 CR7 was when he truly elevated himself to global level. Total goals 42 in 49 games in all comps, top scorer in the league with 31 goals enroute to winning the league and won PFA player of the year. Add the Champions League final opening goal and winning the final as well. All of this at age 22-23. Ever since 2008, no United player has ever come close to him. The fact that he still can score 20+ more goals at his current age truly makes him a GOAT.

Cristiano is the best product coming from Sporting CP, which has one of the best academies in the world. I recommend seeing another great coming from the same club and one of the best Portuguese players, Luís Figo. He was part of galácticos at Real Madrid. Figo played for Barcelona and Inter as well

10,9 and 7 always had been the biggest in football, for a while 14 as well, in the 90’s winger would use 11…
Defenders would take the 5 usually for the top defender, defensive midfielders would take the 6…it’s all relative but I would agree that 10 and 9 are iconic but 7 also it’s iconic already before Ronaldo but maybe Ronaldo had put it on top the same way Pele had done it with the 10
