Manual for this amp is scanned and located here: is.gd/sonyxm3040fmanual
Can you change the THD to .08%, the factory rating?
this amp has a unique amplifier design not so common in car audio from the time, it uses a driver ic instead of discrete transistor stages , those 4 chip amp looking ic's on the heatsinks are nec pc1270h , they are driving the output transistors , in more modern sony class ab you would see a more traditional class ab made up of transistors and that makes them more reliable. but back in the day this was the way to go to reduce cost and size! this also has a nec pc1237ha speaker protection ic that does the overload detect and dc ofset detect , those relays are the part of speaker protection ic. this ic will turn on the speakers few seconds after the amp is turned on to prevent that turn on thump and it will turn off the relay before the main capacitors are discharged to prevent the turn off thump , this sort of ic is not found in modern amps because the protection now just turns off the main powersupply instead of disconnecting speakers.
the output transistors are only rated at 8amps so this is definitely not made for low ohm operation. the rails are +-28v and 2ohm at that volt is already pushing those transistors to their limits! would not recommend anything lower than 2ohm if you want the amp to live long!
It may be surprising to you that quite a few car audio amps at that time were using the uPC1270 in the output stage including a/d/s.
This is great info! Are you an engineer or in electronic repair.....or both? lol
@@envisionelectronics i see them more often in home stereo amplifiers.
@@justinmurphy2227 repairs mostly. Although i did make some of my own class ab amps for home use but they are nothing remarkable or special just clones of known good designs ..
Thanks for the info, I'd like to see you comment on more videos.
When Walkmans were popular and head units pulled out of the dash.
From a time when tape decks weren't necessarily standard options on the factory decks....the pullout head units were "magical" theft deterrents for that aftermarket tape deck....my buddy had his stolen and the comment to the cop was, "the dumbasses can't even use it without the wiring harness. I guess that's why they chose crime over education"
Actually no, pull outs were available before this… by this time it was detachable faceplates. Pioneer came out with the first detachable faceplate in 1989.
@@VisionSoundPDX Pullout decks were still popular around this time and into the mid-late 90s. Detachable face decks gained popularity in the mid-late 90's in my area. My comment was more of a lighthearted anecdote....i was gonna make a pull out game joke, but it's a family friendly channel....
I had the original Sony Walkman.
Also had a pull out head unit. I don't remember if it was my Sony or my Pioneer. I only worked with three different brands when it came with car head units. The other was Alpine.
Love seeing these old school amps still running!
I had the 55 x 4 version of this amp with two 30 amp fuses. That was a decent amount of power back then!
Back in the day speakers were more efficient, It took less power to move the drivers.
Speakers were less durable. The trade off is more durable speakers that take more power to move them..
I like all the content you make Big D, but the old school stuff is always my favorite. 👏 👏 👏
I will do one per week for the Summer! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Today, Sony has the XM-GS4. These are absolutely for SQ. A low cost gem.
Ohhh ❤.. I picked one up at a pawn shop in Mississippi around 1995 don't remember how much but I remember loving the amp!
I still have a XM6020...works just fine 🙂 92 or 93 model I used to bump RF s1 12's 🎉
These were the amps that started a 30year love affair with sony! Pair them with good oldschool mids (bostons, Altecs, infinitys) and you just cant beat it. Specially for the money.
As long as you didn't pair them with Sony speakers they sounded great
Sweet amp! Would love to see how this compares to an ADS PQ10 as it is spec'd very similar minus the internal X-over.
I have one of those, thought I'd tested already, maybe I haven't....
@@wal the more ADS the better this world will be!
Love the Japan amps old Sony and eclipse alpine boards are nice.
I had that amp in 91. Ran an old Rockford Fosgate punch 45 with it that didn't even have screw clamps for the speaker wires, just wires coming out that you spliced together.
Sound is amazing 👍👍👍
Right up my alley all I had was Sony back in the day. Never seen the black ones only that champagne color. Awesome review.
Great amps all through the 90s. Sound quality was always fantastic.
7:45 YES!!! But of course. Lololol 🤣 I would pull up to people and ask them if they had any Grey Poupon while driving my hooptie back in the day.
Really beautiful on the inside!
I have two xm-5520 amps from back in the day. 55wx2 they were some of the good stuff.
When you had a walkman for your cassette tapes, and used star-69 on your landline for caller ID.
Those were the days
I had the XM-2020 and works great as a tweeter amp.
Great video ❤
I had one of these running a pair of 15's in an isobarik ported box.
Nice test on a classic amp. I wonder how the new 1s do. 😎👍👍
i love bonus content 👍👍
Walk us through your garage system power setup
I had this amp running mids and highs and I think a JL running subs in 1992 blasting zeppelin and AC/DC with the wind blowing through my mullet!!!
I don't think I've ever seen this model before!
A couple of these would be amazing for the front stage mids and highs. One bridge for midbass would probably have very nice output for the SPL lovers.
I have a few (10) various models of the goldish tan series. What years did these come out? Mid 90's?
You're more than welcome to them for videos any time sir!
I'm a fan of old Sony amps. Dig the white glove treatment.
I seen CA&E had my first amp listed, a Sherwood XA-2104, it ran 2 Rockford Fosgate series 1 12's.
Remind me of a alpine 3553 4 channel no matter this would have been nice addition to a overall stock sound system in the car
I'd like to see one of those tested. Even though I'm guessing it would have similar results. Heck even like to see the early V12 series.
@@chadcurrent1645 if I recall he tested it's little brother 3550 it also a 4 channel bit older
I like the alpine V12 lines as well
The 5 channel one are cool
@@kevinb158 I'll have to look for it. I've only seen 3545 and a newer big v12
Sony ES line currently being sold on Crutchfield.
Must sound incredible
I’ve always liked them old Sony amps.
scanning the manual is a godsend.
Just posted in pinned comment and also video description: is.gd/sonyxm3040fmanual
I still use Sony amps still this day 👌🏽 insane reliability.
These old Sony amps didn’t do a lot of power, but boy were they reliable and nice sounding.
I had a few of the XM amps paired with the XEC1000 crossover. Great system.
Xec1000 everybody wanted that crossover
Old Sony amps are great. My first "good" amp was a Sony XM-4040 that I bought new in like 90 or 91...I've since had about 6. I also had an XM-10020 that matched it and my last car had some Mobile ES amps from 1996 (2x XM2100G and a 450G) that still worked great. If you're working on a budget, old Sony amps are a great choice because when people hear Sony they think of the Xplod stuff so the prices stay down.
The Old MTX had the split bottom too. I wondered why back in the day as well
It was supposed to be for noise isolation
@@danielknepper6884 Yup, that was the stated reason
I had one of these amps years ago and a sony cassette deck that was a pull out unit. Damn im old 😢😢😢
IIRC the reason for the 2 panels is because they could be used on single panel and dual panel amps without having to have separate panels stamped.
This was a work horse for Sony. It was amazing for the price when new.
Those were the days when SONY made creative, high-quality audio. 🤟 Thanks for the video.
The XM3040F was one of my first amp i had....also the active crossover XEC 505....bandpass subwoofer Emphaser EBP 210...
later in 1995 i worked in a car audio shop and started my upgrade to Rockford Foagate punch series🫠😬😬
And a lot of bass cd's, wich i still have🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@AZ-rv8wp oh yeah.... it was a good gear.... i can confirm it...👍👍👍
Wish 🤞 you could do the hifonics series 8 atlas if you ever get your hands on it
Yo hooked that amp up to old school cassette deck
Any chance you can get sony to send you their new 5 channel amps to test?
What no click clack from the elacs?
Wish you would dyno the original Sony XM-120 from the 80s. This was from the first generation of Sony's original car audio line.
Im shocked it still works id figure the caps would be leaking
3:22. BIG D. IT DOES SAY WHAT THE VOLTAGE IS AT RATED POWER. THAT STICKER ON THE BOTTOM SAYS THE RATED VOLTAGE 12V.
At least when it came to MTX amplifiers they used the two panels for the bottom due to noise isolation. At least that's what they claimed.
when i first saw the specs, i thought it might compare to the PQ20, but nope. only thing it has over that is the built in crossovers
At least it did rated although efficiency is a bit yuck.
If it can move 15’s all day without blowing up, it’s a winner. Some amplifiers claim certain wattage and after 5 minutes they blow up.
The audio world is a huge clusterbuck.
love seeing these old school amps being tested
😂 The gloves...
Be cool to test the new mobile es mono amplifier
The audiobahn Michael Jackson glove making an appearance
The gloves were a good call. The end plate clearly says it has "SONY STD."
🤣
Good amplifiers usually have a x-over of 18-24 db per octave...
Looks like my A/D/S from back in the day
I love the old A/D/S wish I could find some one to fix a few that I have.
I have this amp I believe or a model very close to it I think mine is a silver aluminum color
I always abused the heck out of class ab amplifiers running them 2 ohm bridged all the time no matter the brand . They ran quite hot but I was pushing the most power I could alot younger and less informed then.
Test alpine v12 and jensen old school amplifiers
Still my everyday amp mine is 4 x 55
Esos amplis eran buenos
I was an installer at a small shop in 91 and 92. I wish I had a dollar for every one of these I installed. Hated them.
Alpine amps were similar in internal design
Yes recap these amps definitely the small caps do go bad and leak due to being close to heat generating devices. And can cause it to go into protect when they get bad enough. Great video Dereck.
Sony ,Kenwood,Pioneer and Alpine
Alll used maximum power ratings on all their speakers and their amplifiers
It’s the USA brand that didn’t
Like RF ,PG,PPI ,Orion ,and Zed Ausio
I love these old school amps being tested and seeing that they still work. I like your budget amp videos, too. Have you thought about testing a Profile Clarus 600m? They came with a white glove. Lol
Sony is solid. Even the xPlod's bad rap was pretty undeserved imo!
This one was likely intended for hi-fi style rigs.... Low THD, modest watts.
I’ve had these before, I’m betting there’s not much dynamic power on the dyno. Great amp though.
Already eating my own words, lol. 20%+ better at 4 ohms…
Same year my car was made
I have never see you Dyno a Eclipse amplifier why ...
Cause you missed it - czcams.com/video/FdTWTuQRWsk/video.html
@@wal2 GOTTEM meme activate!
Sony was so good
When I first started carrying refurbished products in my shop. I needed a 4 channel amp to drive the mid-range speakers in my car. It just so happened to be this exact amplifier. Not the same model. It was either 40 w x 4 or 50 W X 4. I don't recall. Definitely was not the 30 × 4.
Being recondition by Sony I saved a good deal of money. Not only that I was able to get it wholesale. I don't recall the price however I believe it was definitely under $150 now that I think about it. It did the job just fine. Nothing to scream about just good clean dependable sound.
Back in the 90's Sony was very generous with their vendor accommodation program. IIRC 60% off MSRP for speakers/subs and 40-50% everything else.
That's not bad numbers for low power applications
why an old school cool amp, on an old school youtube channel is on the second channel??
Those guts are impressive
My first real amp lol.
For that i had a supertech and us-blaster junk.
Still the new sony car radio 4x45watt with dbb selection.
Had more good sound so i sell that amp .
Go to pioneer with yes 2x70watt
What a junk amp is that .
So i go over the Philips amps and a new world is born.
Even the sony explode serie after my philips amp is out of car by sombody really need it for him self.
Never had that bass pump on my subs .
If you were buying these amps in 91. It wouldn't be for a 2.1 setup. Its likely it was run as a 2 channel. At 0.08%. That 75 watts ish would have been plenty.
I used one like this back in the day as a test and I was kinda blown away with how well it worked
@@wal2 Sony was kinda like JL back then. Always charged extra, but made the leap worth it. You really just had to want it. Enough trips to Circuit City was all it took sometimes.
I think I had one of these in my 87 Cutlas 442...I am sure it was a Sony, not sure of the model. It sounded good compared to stock Delco, but it had 3" speakers in the dash, and 4 x 10s in the rear deck...no sub. I had a JVC tape deck with "auto reverse and Dolby noise reduction. This was my first system with an external amp, however , I had some systems wit "EQ Power boosters", hooked up to fuse box via fuse taps...since then I have owned dozens of amps and installed 100s of systems...If I knew then what I know now...great show Big D, your the man
Love seeing these old chaps tested. From back in the day when speakers took about 30 watts.
Had one back in the day, around 1993, playing some Alpine 4x6's( the top of the line models with a single 3/4 silk dome tweeter) in the dash, and old made in Germany MB Quarts 5 1/4 components in the doors. Just the mid-high part of the system of course, but SQ was great.
I had an Alpine CD head unit, actually powered my rear fill speakers, and 300 watts of Precision power amp for bass to 2 JL Audio 8W6 dvc subs.
I know there are some great systems now, great products out there. But it is more the exception than the rule. A lot of emphasis on features and crazy power.
Class D is just a cheap way to make efficient low loss amplification. Hard to argue with it for bass.
As for SQ it has taken a lot to get them close. Don't get me wrong, I have several, and I use them not only for bass amps.
But I also listen to some of these systems and i guess they sound good, and they are loud. That's great , if you don't know any better.✌
Amps rated from 20hz to 20khz pump out way more at 1khz which is a cheat
Have you tested any of the Sony ES lineup? Just curious if you think the build quality and sound is worth the extra cost.
Dang Wilson I ordered that same amp from the crutchfield catalog back in 1991. It was a clean amp used to run my mids and highs off my Sony pullout cassette stereo, good times!
Some holy grail parts in there, genuine SanKen transistors! Definitely nice sounding for sure. A recap and repaste will be a very good idea if it will go back to full service, don't wanna hurt unobtanium bits!
In the 1960's, Sony, the one and only, was an engineering company.
in the 1970's the bean counters took over.
By the middle 1980's Sony wasn't high end. Middle of the road shtuff.
Rubycon caps FTW! I have photography equipment (Xenon flash guns) from the 1970s that are still working today with these caps!
Wow that's a throwback. I bought one of those for my girlfriend at the time. That exact model. She had a 1989 Volkswagen Golf. I also had put in a pair of Cerwin Vega 12s and alphasonik amplifier, along with a sony xec 700 crossover... I don't remember what model Alpine tape deck though.
Back when Sony actually made quality amps. None of this cheaply made Chinese quality crap we have now. I remember when sony decks, home audio receivers and TV’s were very popular and high quality. I had Trinitron TV’s and the 90’s era Pioneer Elite equipment. Now I don’t touch any of it. I’ll continue to run Denon and Macintosh.
In 1991 the DiskMan was popular.
I miss pull-out head units and a detachable faces.
NOW, this amplifier really looks good inside, on the SQ side. Not like actual after 2010 sony\s amps
I have a 1991 Pioneer equivalent it’s funny how the chassis looks so similar sign of the Times ha ha ha ha
