  • As a Fletcher fanboi, a lot of folks have been asking my opinion on new Tier IX Premium American destroyer USS Johnston. So here it is: my verdict on the ship.

    I think WG knew there was demand for the ship and people would buy it regardless, so they didn't have as much need to make it good. Kind of like they did, to a much greater degree, with the Kitakami.
    (PS: I'm still waiting for a good version of Sigure with Hara as a special captain. LOL probably not in my lifetime.)

    What I don´t understand is the loooong torp reload. The burst fire mode to me doesn´t justify the long reload on the torps because it´s not exactly OP. If they had a reload similar to the one on the Kidd, I would get the boat. But as is, for the moment it´s a hard pass for me.

    They should have given it the french damage saturation gimmick.

    • @SeaRaptor
      @SeaRaptor  Před 4 dny +5

      I think honestly this would have been the best option. Giving it a heal makes it a bit TOO much like Kidd. Giving it the French damage saturation mechanic makes it truly unique among American DDs.

      @@SeaRaptorAnd thematically consistent with the real boat

    With a full gun build, her reload is 3.8 seconds and her burst is 1.17 seconds between salvos with a reload of 7.5 seconds. If you have fearless brawler, her reload is 3.5 seconds and her burst is 1.05 seconds with a reload of 6.7 seconds. Johnston gets her 4th salvo out without burst at 11.4 seconds; whereas, with her burst gets her 4th salvo out at 9.86 seconds (without accounting for fearless brawler).

    • @SeaRaptor

      Exactly. The burst fire makes sense in MOST situations, all things being equal. But it doesn't change the fundamental flaws the ship has given the playstyle she is incentivized to chase.

      Yeah you got some more demage from burst over time but I think the best value is in timing that burst fire. Cos when you met with other DD you both mostly gonna try turn out and you both are broadside and before he does turn out you will burst fire him with SAP and chunk him for solid demage. You can chunk him for like 8k in one burst salvo. Also these longer range torps are more meta then standard fletcher 10.5 torps. You have lot of 12km radars and with these longer range torps you can still use them against ships than are far away without going into radar range. Also you can use normal Gearing build with torp reload skill and RPF dont need some special build with FB and other stuff. FB is not really great for USA DDs that wanna farm from smoke. Is it better than fletcher? I think it depends on situation. When you wanna stop push with lot of ships without radar so you can use your better torps reload with shorter range, than yeah fletcher is better. If you wanna kill the dd fast than johnston is better. SAP also does great demage to cruisers and BBs and all ships that have armor less than 36mm.

    Johnston should have been given French saturation or a heal and a potential damage funny button that lowered the heal cooldown. And maybe moved to T10 like Wisconsin vs Iowa/Missouri.

  • @Mr_Secondaries
    @Mr_Secondaries Před 4 dny

    Lack of damage mitigation or heal is stopping me from opening my wallet. The burst fire is interesting, but for a ship thats history performamce is ultra aggressive, i feel, gameplay wise, the Kidd and Fletcher reflects this better.

  • @CCM1199
    @CCM1199 Před 3 dny

    The Johnston needs to be played with the funny button only and have a pure gunboat build to be effective thats using Basic firing training, Fearless brawler and reload mod. You dont need the extra range because those rounds are a little floaty. because you have a quick reload of the funny button its best to play with it full time and engage targets that you can strike quick. Much like I do with the sherman, I start fires first then swap to SAP to do more damage on top of the fire damage. to me Johnston is a misunderstood ship but very potent in its own right. Each of the fletcher class destroyers in game have their own little gimmick. I call the Johnston the mini Austin because it acts the same way or in a similar manner when engaging with SAP. I like the Johnston and will play it for sure.

    What you say about being careful is true with every dd. Even with a Smaland or Lushun, you can't just drive into the unknown and start shooting at the first ship you meet without knowing the positions of the ships, where the radar is, etc. Such a Smolensk or DM doesn't care at all that you have some heal on your Kidd.

    • @SeaRaptor
      @SeaRaptor  Před 3 dny

      @@vitezslavlorenc3479You aren't wholly wrong, but my criticism of this ship remains. Kidd is a better gunfighter. Given Johnston's reputation and the design choices made for her, that makes no sense.

    • @vitezslavlorenc3479
      @vitezslavlorenc3479 Před 3 dny

      @@SeaRaptor I am not really sure about that. I just murder Fletcher like it was made from paper. That SAP burst really gives you the edge in those fights. Yeah you have to be more carefull about what ship you are fighting and what other ships are shooting you but that SAP burst is no joke. I think that worse players will be better with Kidd cos you can get into bad situation and heal your demage back and good player will be better in Johnston cos you can avoid that demage and those bad situations and give more demage back with your SAP.

    Great video. I'm still new to the game and having a hard time playing Fletcher. Of all the ships I have so far it is my favorite to play. Radar is murder though

    • @SeaRaptor
      @SeaRaptor  Před 4 dny

      You eventually learn how to play around most radar; the Russian 12km stuff is challenging, but at least it's shorter duration. The American and British radars are nominally worse because of how long they can be made to last.

    What we wanted was the USS Johnson that struck fear into the Japanese Center Force in the Battle off Samar. A ship that fought so hard and bravely Her enemy thought it was a Cruiser. USS Johnson should have come with an increased hit pool and a Heal, as well as Smoke, SAP and Burst. And if I can be picky, not cost half a days wages to get.

    I wish this ship just like Kidd but in Tier 9, Fletcher with a heal is a lot more comfortable to play

  • @Powerhaus88
    @Powerhaus88 Před 3 dny

    Fletcher is best built for torpedoes. No matter how well you build for guns she's just not gonna out-duel some of these power creeped fantasy paper stains. But if you build for torps, woah mama, 81 sec reload, 19k damage/fish, 73 knots. She's a little monster.

    • @SeaRaptor
      @SeaRaptor  Před dnem

      I mean, that's how *I* play the ship, but a gun build is equally valid if you want to go that way. She can't sustain it for long in the open and will likely want to sit in smoke and try to play like a Sherman would, but it's doable (if boring).

  • @waynelawrence5220
    @waynelawrence5220 Před 4 dny

    IMO to keep the spirit of the history of Johnston it really should have been given a heal. That aside what really torks me about the ship is the garbage 170s base torpedo reload. For me It really kills running the ship as a torpedo build. I agree is it a good ship but it really could have been so much better.

    • @SeaRaptor
      @SeaRaptor  Před 3 dny

      I have tried the torpedo build, and it just isn't worth it. Even maxed out the reload is too long.

    • @SeaRaptor

      It would have been a good option; I think giving the hull the same damage saturation mechanics that the French DDs enjoy would have been a better choice.
