Top 5 Beginner Sewing Patterns

In this week's vlog I'm sharing my top five beginner sewing patterns - easy to sew and easy to wear whilst also teaching you those crucial beginner sewing skills to get you started on your dressmaking journey. I've chosen simple tops and skirts in different styles that can be sewn in a variety of beginner friendly and more advanced dressmaking fabrics to create a range of different looks. The sewing techniques covered include darts, waistbands, zips, hems, straps and more. I've sewn all of the patterns myself and love wearing these garments time and time again so they really are a personal recommendation. Thank you so much Lucy, I really really enjoyed watching you telling us about the different makes, and assuring newbies, how easy they are to make. I really really can’t believe how much patterns cost now. I haven’t brought a pattern for some time, but, the cost is very prohibited. I go to a charity shop, that stocks used patterns, that are fine. Depending upon what you want, there’s not the wide range of patterns, but for newbies it could be a starting point. Ah thanks Jan, it is such a different style to what I normally wear, but I absolutely love wearing it when I do. It feels very feminine and it is fun swishing around in something so girly for a change. We are all ok thanks, hope you are too.

Thanks Jill, yes I always seem to work with a mixture of both it just depends what I have in my head and who has a pattern that best matches it. I think it gives us so much more choice if we dare to try some different brands.

Lucy did you sew the pink top in this first skirt pattern you are showing in this video ? It's pink knit with gathering at the top of sleeves. I like the sleeves & the neckline. If you did what sewing pattern did you use for that top please ? Thank you.

I wouldn't recommend trousers for a beginner, which is why I left them out of this video, but if you are a beginner I would go for something loose fitting if possible because they are easier to fit.
