  • Join Tim as he creates beautiful portraits of three generations brought together for some very special images. This big scene was lit simply with one 3'x 4' Main light for directional modeling of the subjects, plus three bounced heads (off of wall and ceiling) for Fill light which were placed 10' apart and 10' high, behind the camera. This episode features people management, composing, posing and soliciting expression. Enjoy!

I’m having PTSD watching pose the child. 🤭 OMG! By the time I get the shot with my grandson I feel like I’ve been wrestling and alligator and octopus! I felt like I was there! 😆

You ended up using the 70-210 to maximize the backdrop width... clearly you knew that was a possibility when you set the backdrop facing that doorway. Excellent.

Great work Tim, was this a 3 light set up, with key, backdrop, spot on backdrop and reflector for fill? I couldn’t see a hair light in the scene. A quick camera pan over lighting would be appreciated on the next video. Love your work, totally inspirational and I can see me applying your principles in a shoot environment in the future.

One main, three bounced (very high) fills, which account for some "hairlighting",and a grid bkgnd light which we didn't end up using. We always expect to open up shadows with a little spot, put we didn't need it, and when we did it cross-lit and enhanced the wrinkles. Of course, the large standing white reflector sends back what it receives from the feathered main light. A reallt simple set up.

How in the world did you get the wrinkles and folds out of the floor drop. Was sooo clean and straight

We use lots of little clamps for the "wall", and either gaffer tape or 5lb weights to hold the floor in place. In this nice home, we used weights.

yes. I forget about eliminating ambient lighting in the room.

Did the client request backdrop? Is that something you would normally do in the home?

They generally preferred studio looks. The location was nice, but chosen just for their convenience. (An hour+ away from the studio).
I designed a new background just for the shoot and had it painted by David Maheu. www.backgroundsbymaheu.com
