David...Respectfully ...I think he understood his brilliance, but depression is an evil monster to combat. I fight depression daily. I am on medication, but at times the depression overrides it.
Anthony was a sensitive vulnerable soul who just couldn't face another day of the blanket of despair that he had to live with. What a beautiful man who struggled with his demons.

I marveled, how he intellectualized food. He was an artist, chef and a producer....the Elon Musk of the food world. However killing yourself?? ...that blew me away. Such talent, so gifted and inspiring, and yet he kills himself....in the end he was a waste. He was a dark, empty, sad man....nothing to admire.

Anthony's show breathed oxygen into me. I became newly addicted to his show for 4 months. Then, while walking my dog in Burbank, I sat down at an outside table at Starbucks and there he was, sitting right there alone at the table across from me dressed in blue jeans, a black leather jacket and dark sunglasses. It was as thou I was granted 15 minutes alone with this man I had grown to admire. I mused with him that he looked a lot like Anthony Bourdain. He said :yeah, I get that a lot." He smiled when I said well, you could be his brother or cousin. I told him how much I loved the show and it was so much more than just about food. He was kind, funny, and thoughtful. He stayed talking to me and enjoyed how I thought he was really a look alike! I said I love that show. He doesn't hold anything back. He said "Neither do I ". We said good bye and I walked home on cloud nine wondering how I got so lucky. Another year went by and I saw him again at a local Vons and he smiled and waved from a distance as I was again getting coffee at Starbucks in the store and he was in the checkout line. What an incredibly insightful talent. When I found out he took his own life it devastated me. We had lost the most talented, emotionally sensitive, and intelligent person ever to have a show that gave us real food, oxygen for the soul. I said my prayers, sent my love, and will forever be grateful for Anthony Bourdain.

Love the story because I worked kitchens on Long Island around the same time. I didn't enjoy coke, but I did it as part of the comradery. I graduated HS at 155 pounds of athletic physique, and moved into a dishwashing position left to me by friends as they went away to college and I stayed local. Less than 6 months later after a chef and a cook had a knife fight. The new chef (replacement) was surviving cancer and kept his colostomy bags in the walk-in fridge, and the guy taught me everything. By 19, I weighed 135 pounds from drinking and not eating for days at a time....But I was interviewed by the Newsday food writer one night who had been visiting the restaurant and said to me "so, were you trained in France?" I said, "no, upstairs."

He was sober by the time he started filming any TV shows. Also, if you work in restaurants you know that it's rare for a chef to be obese because 1. they work so much there's hardly any time to eat, and when they do it's not during normal meal hours, 2. they are on their feet for 10 hours a day and 3. most kitchens are pretty small! It would be hard for someone "morbidly obese" to make their way around a cramped kitchen.

He meant I could go outside and get high if that was going to put me in a better mood for the guests I think a lot of us turned to drugs just as a way of dealing with the fact that you have to be at a party everyday and people expect you to act like you're having fun and that every night is just a special to you as it is to the guests but it's just Tuesday night.

Believe it or not speaking about it here on this platform does not really do justice to the feeling that your body is not responding, your mind is perplexed, and the only out you have is a crowd who supports the existence of this. The problem has to do with influence. An influence that is appealing and convoluted is not exactly the best possible choice. I am extremely surprised he made it to 61 but I believe he is a survivor who did what seemed was the only option to avoid the above. He is the embodiment of the sinner saint who was looking for a life raft and found an anchor.
