- Dr. Jordan B. Peterson is a Canadian clinical psychologist and a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto. In 1999, he published his first book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief, which became the basis for many of his subsequent lectures. The book combined information from psychology, mythology, religion, literature, philosophy, and neuroscience to analyze systems of belief and meaning. He began to receive widespread attention in the late 2010s for his views on cultural and political issues. In 2018, he published his second book, 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos. Promoted with a world tour, it became a bestseller in several countries. Peterson is widely regarded as the greatest philosopher of the 21st century. His ideas focus on empowering humanity on an individual level by taking responsibility and pursuing a noble aim.

The most powerful thing I've learned from Dr. Jordan Peterson: Change yourself and you will change the world. Change starts on an individual level. Individual freedom comes with taking individual responsibility. Do not play the victim game. Take your power back.

When you live under a system that is designed to oppress people who don't fit the standards of the elite and don't already belong to it, it is not "victim game" to point this out. What Peterson and many like him forget is they are starting on the course of life with no immediate and externally applied hindrances. Jon Scalzi's gamer theory of privilege and advantage should be studied by anyone and everyone who thinks "victim mentality" is the problem. We are not in a fair and equitable society and cannot be so long as people like him lie to the rest of us about where the fault more often lies. It does take work. In groups. Overthrowing and remaking the power structure cannot be achieved by individuals acting alone.

@@lysanamcmillan7972
That's not his point, though.
Encouraging people, to work on themselves on an individual level first and to make sure, they've actually earned the right, to critize society (never mind, completely overhaul it) and protesting real, tangible injustices are not mutually exclusive goals.
The ability and willingness, to stand up, for what's ethically right and just (even at a high cost), is something, he actually considers as a very much necessary part of character development.
But none of this has anything to do, with 'victim mentality'. 'Victim mentality', is when you're a lazy, useless lout, who blames 'society' for their lack of sucess. When you're not even really trying, before you complain. And you know perfectly well, there are people like that if you have any life experience. Just as their people, who are genuinely and heartbreakingly disadvantaged by circumstances. But even for the latter, it's still the most sensible advice, to work their asses off and see, where that gets them, instead of resigning themselves to their situation.
Peterson is a Psychologist. He tries to help people on an individual level. He's basically just telling people, what they should have been taught by their parents at about 5 years old. And it's actually a particularly important message exactly for disadvantaged people. Because it's the only realistic way for them, to actually improve their lot.
What he says, works for a lot of people...many of them young men, who would otherwise have gone down a very unfortunate and self destructive path in life.
How people can interpret that as him defending social injustices, is totally beyond me. Except of course, that most of them have never actually listened to the man and instead rely on dishonest, sensationalist media coverage for their 'information'.

The right-left brain / yin and yang-face needs to be on a shirt. The artwork is especially wonderful in this one.

The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away. The “purpose of life” is “a life of purpose”, but you need to find that gift first 🖖
I am the cool kid from Germany making videos for the USA and the rest of the world. I will make your day so don't say nay to my videos today, dear old
The problem is that sometimes responsibilities to family, elderly parents....can stop you from pursuing that meaning of life. By the time your responsibility ends you may be too old to pursue it.
@@johnl.7754 You decide by talking with yourself, what & who you need to be responsible for. But I mean that. If you lie to yourself & run from responsibilities, you are the one who will lose the most. So be honest with yourself about what you feel is true & which actions make the most good.
the purpose of being alive is just being alive
and that's the thing... finding that gift
The balance between the noble aim, and paying attention to the present moment is the see-saw we tread as humans!
Been feeling so down, lost and unchallenged. This makes so much sense.
so true, Dr Peterson, it moves me to tears. Well done, After School, you prove that WE LEARN FOR LIFE, NOT FOR SCHOOL
I see new video from After Skool - i go on break to enjoy it, no exceptions
This is so very true. I practiced karate, running and powerlifting all at once for 14 years. But when I got good at karate, quite strong etc.. the fun was gone. I got really deoressed because of that. My life was gone. Now i live a calm life in the forest, practicing woodcarving. I suck at it but it excites me for hours on end. And this time, I'm wise enough to apreciate the journey :-)

Awesome, as always. great illustrations too. Thank you!
being completely honest, I feel like some of this philosophy just doesn't translate for me the way he explains it. I think that most of my life has been letting go of ambition and being happy with who I am today. I am going exactly where I'm going and I'm confident that it will be a good place if i live truly and mindfully. "Planning for the future only applies to those capable of living fully in the present moment" - Alan Watts.
Well Jordan talks about the burden of real life, where you have books to pay, kids to rise, a job to keep. In that real world you have to plan...think ahead, outmaneuver and so on...
I'm with ya. I have to let go of trying to control the outcome. Maybe I won't have that dream house in the countryside, or the motorcycles in that garage, or run a multi million dollar business/dental practice, but guess what? I'm ok with it now. It's not in my control. All i can do is try, take action on what the matters that are important to me, the outcome is not in my control. My only fear is not having the opportunity to pursue my goals/purpose. What is a man supposed to do then?
@@ThePunter209 Don't be too hesitant at bringing your future into being. A noble aim for the individual (your work benefits the individual _and_ group (selfish _and_ good)) is how one surmounts obstacles, such as a lack of starting competency. 'Controlling the outcome' as you put it, _is_ something the new marxists want to do, and it _is_ because of their fascination with utopia, and their desire to hold established corporate power structures to their propagandist nonsense: that if only you do as you're told and consume products, your life will improve/attractive rich people will like you.
Reading your comment, i feel validated about 'my' theory that most utopias are mostly subconscious projections of the family home, 'the king and the castle,' in which all things are designed for the benefit of the children of The Father, seemingly at an individual level (a sufficient definition of the family motif of The Gospel of Matthew, 7:7 (pray, and you certainly will receive)).
What i mean by this ramble is that one, you, shouldn't 'wait for opportunity' like it's a sort of 'permission from God.'
There's a vacuum in the world for men who understand that a hard work ethic, and a generous spirit, naturally generates the trappings of utopia (suburban middleclass family life) around that person.
I think it's common in Jewish theology to regard heaven as a return to the garden of eden, and, i think there is something to that (at least it's more literal than the parody of King David's royal court that is Christian heaven), as an explanation of the afterlife.
What i'm getting at is _role._
The inner child wants to return to the garden of eden, as the child. A man wishing for this finds himself alone- no God will appear to him until he looks closely in the mirror.

Jordan we all miss you be better soon and bring with you your new book :))
🇨🇦Peterson's focus on effectiveness also substantiates individual improvement view as this is what you have the most control over. Ask yourself a question and listen for the answer. This awakens your attention resulting in that which needs to be upgraded revealing itself. Start small and try not to be tyrranical with yourself. Building necessary skills as you go. You will fail so plan for that so that failure is part of the process and not a destination. After Skool: btw talented artistry dude.

This was amazing. Find your noble aim. Deactivated my insta, fb, and snap (the social media apps I used constantly) about a week ago and I’ve felt so much happier. I’m not on my phone as much, I’ve significantly stopped comparing myself to people, I’m living in the moment (no more taking pics every 2 min of things I’m doing like food or places I’m in and sharing them with people I barely even talk to or don’t even talk to on social media, I’m more focused with making connections with people in person and giving them my full attention without going on my phone, I feel more productive, the list goes on... I pray you (whoever reads this) finds their noble aim and true happiness. I’m not perfect but I’m working on it myself too. 🙏🏿

Paradise Matrix "Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world where none suffered, where everyone would be happy? It was a disaster. No one would accept the program."
Nobody buys vr devices anymore
While I personally am not religious myself, I do like to try and get some moral lesson out of these stories. And your comment really does equate to the story of Adam and Eve. They were given ‘a perfect world’ and they didn’t accept it. They broke the one rule of not eating the golden apple. They rejected the programme. Perfection isn’t perfect
Yo I’ve been thinking about the paradise Matrix recently and the ideas behind it.
And I wondered, when we do all die, what happens when humans decides to reject the the paradise God created. I bring this up because everyone’s interpretation of paradise is different, and I wonder how a divine being can satisfy humans. And you would think well, we’ll have our own worlds in the afterlife, where we can make up our own paradise, but wouldn’t that make us the loneliest people in that world?
@@mrcinema9291 I think The Good Place handled this concept of rejecting paradise excellently. I won’t spoil it if you haven’t seen it, but if you are interested in this whole topic, I suggest a watch! As a philosophy graduate, this is all so interesting to discuss
I like the idea of paradise being our own individual realities that we construct. And you would be perfectly correct in saying that there would bound to be some who reject this due to realising it is artificial and not real. I suggest looking up The Experience Machine online. This thought experiment by Robert Nozick is essentially what we are talking about :)
@@Andy-es2lh Thanks! I most certainly look into it.

@Janice Brown Beautifully said, Janice!
This is incredibly powerful to me at this moment. That last few months, I've been trying to better myself and I've been doing a decent job at it I like to think, meditating nearly every day, been in the best shape I've been in, confidence in myself and my abilities. I've been trying to find spirituality within me and the signs are clearly directing me towards God. I've been on a mission at work to move up and I'm finally on the cusp of it.
Yesterday I was hanging out with some co-workers (4 guys, 2 girls) from work at the beach (there's a girl that I was infatuated with that hangs out with this particular group of co-workers, I thought I would join in the hopes they would put in a good word for me). Anyways, we're there playing drinking games, getting high. They start talking about going back to their house, continuing the party and inviting more girls over. Suddenly I get this overwhelming feeling that I shouldn't put myself in that situation. I immediately start drinking water to sober up after realizing the co-worker that was supposed to drive me back home has been drinking this whole time. I can feel the mood start shifting, some of them start to peer pressure me into drinking more and whatnot but I hold fast and tell them I'm good.
As we start to get ready to head out, I hear this seagull calling and I turn around to face it and I see it pecking at a book where these other beach goers were just moments ago. And I'm looking at this book and a thought pops into my head, "how weird to just leave a book laying here at the beach when they packed up all their stuff." I walk over to it and low and behold, it's the Holy Bible. I'm stunned. I pick it up and tell them what I found, I hear one of the girls say "ew." Not sure which one.
Anyways, our group of guys start walking away, I still have the Bible with me and one of them ask me to read a verse from it. At random, I opened up the Book and I land on Proverbs 4:23, Warning Against Adultery 5.
I couldn't be more thankful and blessed to have found this Book and I also wanna thank Jordan Peterson for the talks he's done and shared with all us.
Be well, be blessed.
@Janice Brown Welcome Janice!
